It takes planning to fund the cost of an education considering that between 2006-07 and 2016-17, published in-state tuition and fees at public four-year institutions increased at an average rate of 3.5% per year beyond inflation1. While tuition will be the largest expense, don't forget about these additional costs that may be incurred: Pre-College Costs • Standardized test fees • Test prep courses and materials • Campus visits • Moving costs Additional College Costs • Room & Board • Books & Supplies 1 College Board (Trends in Higher Education) 2017 • Transportation

Flags of July The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla I grabbed the flag from the closet and placed it on a pole on the deck. There was hardly any breeze. The flag hugged the pole most of this July day. The fireflies hovering about the yard in the late evening seemed like distant fireworks nudging the flag to flutter. That night, the stars and the moon goaded the wind and the red white and blue happily fluttered. An hour further a gaggle of stars sprinkled the sky, as if trying to outnumber the stars on the flag. It’s midnight now and the flag seems to have won the numbers contest with the stars as the night moves, the twinklers are fewer on this side of the night, on my patch of the sky, as the earth continually spins on her axis. There’s always a little extra buzz in the month of July, fully laden with summer heat, evoking patriotism, locking itself on the calendar as the pivot month taking the year into its second half. It’s the birth month of the country, reminding all our democracy’s fragility. The continuing work that’s needed to keep the Republic united and strong. Most folks get a bit patriotic during this month, me included. After the extra drizzle of patriotism in early July, I set the rest of the month on cruise, bones continually warmed by the lovely heat, letting the days pass by in rotating ticks and tocks of summertime bliss. It’s a welcome patch of smoothness, no matter how short, in the daily roughness of life.

Saathee.com

The flag’s patience with citizens is limitless. Especially with the hollow patriotism of word droppers, “freedom” being the main symbolic word these droppers drop. The word is so vast and can mean so many different things to different people. The real feel of freedom is like a ladder for different socio-economic classes. Economic security always means more freedom. The word is used and abused so often by politicians and partisans that it rings hollow in their infirm mouths. The true meaning of freedom is a hand stretched out to neighbors and fellow citizens unlike yourself to lock in unity, not brashness cocked into the triggers of guns or uniforms of selfrighteous seditionists. Of course, we must defend true liberty, attacks on our solidarity and country, whether they are physical, psychological, or technological. This means weapons must occasionally be brought into play. Sometimes an eye for an eye is the only solution. Editor’s Desk continued on page 80

Strong Female Characters Why Has This Become so Hard to Define?

Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen

The “Strong Female Character” has become a big catchphrase in terms of entertainment over the past few years. While I think these creators have their hearts in the right place, these characters often come across as overpowered, underdeveloped, and for lack of a better word… boring. Perhaps I should explain difference between a “Strong Female Character” versus a “Strong Character who is Female”. The overarching definition in both cases is a girl or woman in a story who is presented as anything other than a typical damsel-in-distress or supporting love interest. She’s often a supporting character who is simply better than the lead or in some more recent cases, the lead character herself. Characteristics generally include being able to take care of themselves be it with physical strength, intelligence, strong will or some combination of the three. While the increased representation of fully developed female characters in all forms of media is commendable and should enthusiastically be expanded upon, the way some are written as of late is something we need to reconsider. Some of these characters are portrayed with a noticeable lack of flaws. They are morally sacrosanct and never seem to make bad choices. They are also never really challenged, while traversing through the story and accomplishing their goal without any real cost. Finally, they are usually inheritably better than most of the male characters they interact with… through birthright or some sort of supernatural/scientific means that’s never fully explained. This level of “perfection” makes you wonder why we should even care about such a character, right? What many of these contemporary creations seem to lack is a journey where said character must rise to meet the challenges of their environment. These stories should be about survival within a harsh world, galaxy Miror Mirror continued on page 94

Dieting Enjoy What You Eat Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod Every few days, I get a message/email asking, “Can you create a diet chart for me?” Very frankly, I am at a loss on how to respond to this question. What does it mean to have a diet chart or what is dieting? When you use the word dieting, it immediately implies restriction. It means you are “on a diet”. If you waiver from the “chart” given to you, you feel guilty – you are “cheating”! That is not what food is supposed to be. Food is our fuel! Food is supposed to nourish our minds, bodies, and soul. Food gives us energy. Food is not supposed to make you feel guilty or make you feel deprived. Your health is more than just a diet plan. Very sadly, this whole culture of “dieting” to lose weight fast has created so many other issues. I see an increase in eating disorders among young teenagers. I see other side effects of strict dieting such as acid reflux or elevated cholesterol and other health issues. Your diet (which basically means what you eat on a routine basis) should not be about limitations or following a strict plan. What you eat, when you eat, the timing of your meals, the gap/space between your meals, the balance of each meal, and your overall daily routine are all important. Most importantly, you should enjoy what you eat. It is important to take into consideration your medical history, your family medical history, your job hours, your responsibilities, etc. Research studies show that your mood and overall disposition when you eat can directly affect how you digest that meal. So, if you are feeling guilty because you “cheated” or are feeling deprived because you are “dieting”, you will not digest that meal properly. That can lead to digestive issues including acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, and leaky gut. It won’t happen with one single meal obviously; but if you tend to jump from one diet plan to the other, the long-term effects can be detrimental. Nutrition for LIfe continued on page 74

The Shape of the World Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad “A round man cannot be expected to fit in a square hole right away. He must have time to modify his shape.”

- Mark Twain There are circles and squares, and triangles and rectangles, and such, in the world we know. Or are there? Is it possible that the strange shapes that populate our heads are really shapes that we shaped? Maybe there are no such things in the real world that correspond to these shapes? Maybe our creative minds spin a parallel universe that aspires to turn with the world as the world turns? But never quite manages to? It’s me, not you! The world is dogmatic! It has a mind of its own, and spins where it spins, seemingly unmindful and uncaring about the poor mind that observes, plaintively hoping that it spins the way that it is “supposed” to spin. But we do much more than hope: we engage with the world with our decisions and actions that we believe will eventually make the South the North, and the North the South. But try as we might, things just seem to happen the way they do. Could it be that the problem lies with us, and not with the world? Could it be that we may even do the very opposite of what we should do, and when things go awry, we simply point to the world and say “You!” when we really ought to be saying “It’s me, not you!” Shaping the shaper If we are able to come to terms with the fact that there are, in fact, two universes – the one inside our Thinking about Thinking continued on page 78

The Managers and the Managed The Loss of Pride and Rise of Prejudice

Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani The other day my daughter sent me a dinner food delivery. By the time I saw her text message that it was at the front door, raccoons had eaten it. What surprised me most was that the delivery was just in a fast-food type cardboard box. What the raccoons didn’t eat was full of ants. I have discussed over the years that we may exclusively be a service industry now. Maybe we are nothing. Maybe we all want to manage Chinese labor now. Even pre-pandemic, I was starting to see cracks in how America defined its economy. The roofing guy would charge me hundreds, and the roof would leak the same during the next storm. The A/C guy would sign me up for a quarterly maintenance contract and not show up at all. The tree cutting guys would leave 2,000 pounds of stumps in the back yard and disappear in their rusted pickup truck because it was too hot a day. During the pandemic, I would think I was generous to people who were working the front lines and keeping me alive and feeling normal. If I got a $6 chicken sandwich, I sometimes gave the drive thru workers a $20 tip. But the order was usually wrong anyway, like it was usually wrong before the virus hit. I am now puzzled about where we are really going. During the Reagan presidency, the Made in the USA stickers became a thing. Chrysler/Dodge and indeed most American automobile manufacturers were making almost Saathee.com

garbage cars. I know because I owned two. They were ugly and uninspired designs with horrible engines and transmissions. But we were all trying to salvage Detroit CEOs and the auto industry stockholders by driving around in cars that overheated and rattled just going across town. So today, we have grown up and moved on to Make America Great Again. We blast the Chinese everywhere from the White House to the local pub, and fly American flags on our Harley Davidsons that have a distinct Made in China sticker on them. Other than agricultural products and a few car components, we are hardly manufacturing much of anything. If China suddenly stopped exporting to the US, Amazon would probably collapse in a few weeks. This xenophobic patriotism has become the hallmark of administrations on both sides of the isle in the last four decades. We want Americans to pick up their lunch boxes, prepared by beautiful and smiling wives, and leave for work to make us great again. The problem is that that was probably a public relations sexist fantasy to begin with. Few people came home to well-behaved kids in ironed clothes and a roast in the oven. We were all just working. Like the rest of the planet, we were all just working — with the problems associated with managing bills and lives. Women managed the US economy through WW-II. Summer Blues: A Teenage Story

paintbrush’s potential, you need to take it out of its box. I reluctantly stepped outside of my bedroom and went to my yard. I discovered and appreciated the little things that I hadn’t noticed before. I noticed the vines creeping up on the trees, reaching for sunlight. I noticed the clouds shaped like bunnies and hippos. I initially didn’t notice the fire ant hill which I unfortunately stepped on. My sister and I burst out laughing and did a funny little dance to get the ants off of our shoes. Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute. If you really can’t be away from your phone, like me, take pictures of the world around you. I also used an app on my phone, “iNaturalist”, to scan photos of plants or animals to figure out what they are called. I can learn so much more about these organisms with one click on my phone and it is so much more therapeutic than going on social media. Mother Nature never disappoints. She always has something exciting in store for us, so go grab your hiking boot and explore the world! Now that I have taken action to care for myself, it is time to care for the community. I volunteered to pick up trash in a creek nearby. Surprisingly, there were so many chip bags and candy wrappers littered all over. Volunteering helped me gain a sense of purpose in the world, the purpose I had lost when my school year ended. The world has not recovered from the pandemic yet. It needs all the help it can get. Start with something

My Voice by Sereena Kumar My first year of high school is over and it is a beautiful sunny day. I have an enormous amount of free time. Over the school year, I complained of being too busy and wished that I had time for myself. Ironically enough, now that I have that time, I don’t know how to use it! I miss going to school and doing group projects. I miss laughing with my friends and crying over schoolwork with them. School filled me with purpose and it made me feel accomplished. I find that I, as well as my friends, feel sad about school coming to an end. I went on a journey to find out how to rid myself of these Summer Blues. In order to get to the root of the problem of “Summer Blues,” I tried to visualize Summer Blues through my inner eye, by painting it. I added different shades of blue, and a few stormy clouds, expressing my thoughts through creativity. Art always helps me sort out my emotions and understand them. Plus, art is fun, and I can do it with any materials I have! Summer Blues can be turned into beautiful flowing melodies, bright colors, and words that dance across a page. Art can be anything; it doesn’t only have to be drawing or painting. Find your art medium, find your happy medium. After finishing my first painting, my brain was awake, and my imagination was ticking. I knew that artists couldn’t just stay in their room, though. To discover a Saathee.com

Importance of Cultural Education

Dances of India

when you know where you are coming from, it is easier to understand where you are going. Since the age of five, I had a strong desire to dance. My father nourished my wishes. I discovered that dancing was not predicated upon the movements of legs and arms, but that it grew from an inner urge for prayer in motion. I see many of my students in the same light. Either the parents are fulfilling their own unmet dreams through their children or the students want to experience the energy of dancing, my students’ enthusiasm, motivation, energy and happiness while dancing is totally contagious. Their hard work and my creativity are a fine blend of success. Irrespective of the general opinion, there is a huge demand for classical dances. These dances not only teach discipline, but also stories from the Hindu religion, and a long-term commitment to an art form that is very difficult to learn and a perfect balance of right and left brains. The stories told through dances are not known even to some of the new generation of Indians coming to the USA. Many of my students have been admitted into prestigious colleges due to their long-term commitment to these classical dance forms and training. When these students commit to the traditional dance forms for 7 to 10 years, their commitment to achieve their goals is apparent.

by Dr. Maha Gingrich During the times of instant gratification and sharing traditional cultures seen as going backwards, the 19th anniversary performance of Dances of India was yet again a huge success as we went virtual due to the ongoing pandemic. Over 4000 people watched the show, and many took time to share their experiences and thoughts. People from many parts of the US and the world have watched the show with enthusiasm. As always, we showcased classical dance styles such as Bharatha Natyam, Kuchipudi and Kathak along with traditional folk traditions. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the continued success of this show. People will often ask me as to why I am sticking with only traditional dance styles and not open to incorporating Bollywood in my show. In my opinion, everything has its own place. It all depends on individual teacher’s own vision and passion. My passion is the traditional dance styles that include classical dances and traditional folk dances. I love to research and learn about the influences of Indian dances on world cultures. I want to show people visually our similarities and differences. My signature dance, “Unity in Diversity” has been acclaimed by many for its uniqueness and the beauty of inclusion. I believe Saathee.com

How to Catch up on Retirement Savings at 50 and Beyond

person with no retirement savings at 50 to accumulate over a Million at 8 percent annualized return. There is no question that it is hard to put yourself into that determined mode, but it can be done. Reduce Expenses It is hard sometimes to decipher between necessary and unnecessary expenses, but the fact is that we have an obligation to sit down as a couple (family) and review where our expenses are prominent and then collectively decide how the unnecessary expenses can be cut out. Good, nutritious food is one area where I would be reluctant to cut back especially with small children but there are many other areas where the expenses can be reduced. This habit and the idea of critically evaluating everything does come handy especially when the couple retires and learns to live on fixed income, the one that is not linked to inflation. After retirement, these days, we are looking at a life span of about 25+ years with sudden addition of unforeseen medical expenses during the last few years.

Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans

It is always a bit discouraging to find out, especially at 50 and beyond, that the balance of our retirement accounts is not where we thought it would be. This is not a stretched scenario; for a variety of reasons, many of which may not be under our control, it can happen. We just have to understand where we are, pick up the pieces and figure out how we can catch up. Afterall there is still time left to do that, albeit we may just have to tighten the belt a bit and get lot more determined and resolute.

Plan on Delaying Social Security Contrary to common belief of starting the SSA as soon as Help From Tax Code (IRS) possible (about 65 percent of Our tax code does give us a people do it), the best thing to helping hand once we cross 50 in do is to delay taking the social the form of being able to security payments as much as contribute much more to our possible; you can delay that 401K programs and IRAs; these until your age of 70. The Quad

US efforts to counter China’s influence in Asia mark a new era of micro alliances through which the country is using international investment to build influence across Eurasia and Africa. The Quad has now pledged to extend more than US$50 billion in infrastructure aid and investment in the IndoPacific over the next five years to counter China’s economic clout in the region. Each of the member states has bilateral issues with China, including territorial disputes, historically rooted tensions and spiky diplomatic relations. But the core motivation for its continuance and promotion is the realpolitik consideration of constraining the People’s Republic. This was confirmed in a 2019 speech by the then US secretary of state, Michael Pompeo, who described the group’s role as “ensuring that China retains only its proper place in the world”. China has been increasingly assertive in recent years, especially with regard to the South China Sea, but also in terms of its economic policies such as the BRI and its occasionally bellicose diplomatic rhetoric. This has prompted states from across the Asia-Pacific region – and beyond – to rethink the previous policies that focused more on engagement with China than containment. In this light, the Quad can be seen as a demonstration of the willingness of the US and its allies to respond more assertively in defending their position and interests in the region. This has not gone unnoticed in China. The Global Times, a state-owned tabloid newspaper, has repeatedly referred to the Quad as the “sinister gang of Indo-Pacific to contain China”.

By Ed Griffith and Moises de Souza US president Joe Biden in late May visited Asia in an effort to strengthen relationships in the region, most notably meeting with leaders of the “Quad” alliance of America, Japan, India and Australia. This group of like-minded states represents a 21st-century diplomatic mechanism which is growing in importance in lieu of an Asian Nato. Biden, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Japan-U.S.-AustraliaIndia Fellowship Founding Celebration event in Tokyo. Biden’s trip coincided with a visit by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to Fiji, as part of Beijing’s so-far unsuccessful attempts to gather a coalition of Pacific Island states. China has been wooing nations in the Pacific for some time, as it attempts to expand its diplomatic reach. Most notably, a security deal with the Solomon Islands might open the door to Chinese military presence there. All these efforts illustrate the kind of reshaped global order that we can expect to see in the future. The new security landscape is of pacts between small numbers of states that produce powerful security groupings with quite specific focus in deterring other great powers. Welcome to a new era of micro alliances in international politics. The Quad has its roots in cooperative disaster response efforts in the aftermath of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, but it has evolved in recent years to become more about security. Although the process has stuttered at various points, it has returned to relevance, particularly as a convenient vehicle for countering China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Saathee.com

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in mid-June approved a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications to conduct spectrum auction through which spectrum will be assigned to the successful bidders for providing 5G services to public and enterprises. Digital connectivity makes possible programs such as Digital India, Start-up India, and Make in India. Broadband, especially the mobile broadband, has become integral part of the daily lives of the citizens. Spectrum is an integral and necessary part of the entire 5G eco-system. The upcoming 5G services have the potential to create new age businesses, generate additional revenue for enterprises and provide employment arising from the deployment of innovative use-cases and technologies. Over 72 GHz of Spectrum to be auctioned for a period of 20 years. It is expected that the Mid and High band spectrum will be utilized by Telecom Service Providers to roll-out of 5G technology-based services capable of providing speed and capacities which would be about 10 times higher than 4G services. CRY America’s “Heroes for Life” Gala Raises $1 Million “Heroes for Life,” Child Rights and You (CRY) America’s annual gala series, returned after a two-year pandemic break to honor the organization’s U.S.-based donors and field workers across 30 CRY America-supported projects in villages and slums throughout India. The gala series ran from May 14 - 22, 2022 with sold-out events in the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, New York City and Houston, with a virtual event in Seattle. This year’s fundraising total smashed previous records, raising over $1 million. Saathee.com

64

The galas featured veteran Bollywood actor Vivek Anand Oberoi as celebrity guest who spoke about the importance of supporting the cause of children. Lalithamma, director of People’s Organization for Rural Development (PORD), a CRY America-supported project in Andhra Pradesh shared her work during the pandemic. CRY America CEO Shefali Sunderlal noted that project workers were given special permissions by the Indian government as essential workers during the pandemic, and they went the extra mile to ensure that challenges faced by their communities and children were addressed, while CRY America’s donors maintained their funding support unabated throughout the crisis. “We had to pivot from our regular plans for the year and get a grasp on what was happening in the field where our project partners work,” she said at the May 20 New York gala, held at the Taj Pierre. Sunderlal highlighted CRY America’s model for lasting change, to which collective, community-driven action is central. She emphasized that the organization does not create parallel institutions, but rather works with the government and communities to ensure that public schools, health centers, and other public social programs and facilities remain functional and truly benefit underprivileged communities.

As no gala would be complete without glitz, music, and dance, the series featured Bollywood dance performances, musical numbers and comedians across the cities. CRY America is a nonprofit that supports projects in India and the U.S. that ensure access to education and healthcare for underprivileged children, as well as protection from child labor, early marriage and trafficking. Save the Soil Movement Walkathons for Awareness of Soil Crisis Happened in 60 Cities for the 1st Time in North and Latin America Where do you look when you walk? Perhaps you gaze at other people, or the landscape, or the road ahead. On Father’s Day weekend, June 18 – 19, 2022, the Save Soil movement asked everyone to look down instead—at the soil. Sixty cities across North America and Latin America hosted coordinated walkathons to raise awareness of a silently brewing crisis: soil degradation.

Several walkathons were organized in the Carolinas, including in Charlotte on June 19 at Clanton Park. Nearly 200 people showed their support by participating in walkathon to spread the awareness of the importance of soil in the wellbeing of the humanity. Barbara Bleiweis, Supervisor and Chair, Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District and Renee Garner, Board of Commissioners, Matthews NC, were the guest speakers and they emphasized the importance of saving soil and were happy to be included in the Save Soil movement. All food comes from a single source: the soil. Frequently likened to a thin layer of skin covering the earth, soil contains an ecosystem of innumerable species that anchor all life on the planet. Simply put, without soil, growing food for human consumption would be impossible. However, over the past 150 years, more than half of all planetary soil has been lost. Currently, according to scientific data, 50 percent of U.S. soil and 75 percent of European soil lack sufficient organic content. It is predicted by scientists that by 2045, the world’s population will grow to 9.3 billion people, yet the world will produce 40 percent less food than it is producing now. If this rate of soil degradation continues without immediate and decisive action, much of the earth’s remaining cultivable soil will become degraded in a matter of decades.

Saathee.com

Save Soil, an initiative launched by global leader and visionary Sadhguru, is a worldwide effort to reach and educate over 3.5 billion people around the globe, by rallying citizen support and advocating policies that support soil health. This movement is unique in that it fosters involvement through inclusiveness, joy and inspiration. By mobilizing people now, change is possible. Indeed, Save Soil’s overarching goal is to increase the organic content of the world’s soil by three to six percent, which is an achievable target if the world acts now. Sadhguru embarked on a 100-day, 30,000 km journey after launching the global Movement to Save Soil from extinction since this March. His journey began in London on March 21 and culminated in southern India in late June. A wide variety of public figures, from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to leading primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, from author Deepak Chopra to Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, are supporting Save Soil and its goals, giving voice to what has been an entirely silent ecological disaster. The Save Soil movement has also garnered support from millions of volunteers worldwide. Thousands of people across the Americas and walked to raise awareness for Save Soil. The next decade is humanity’s chance to overcome the soil crisis, and it can be done by becoming Earth Buddies (go to savesoil.org to register to become an Earth Buddy), by writing to local government, influencers, posting in social media with #savesoil and by spreading awareness of soil degradation to others. — Contributed by Pushpa Bhaskar

Saathee RECIPES

by Taige Shukla

Summer Picnic Foods: Pav Bhaji Summer is in full swing and most people are already enjoying backyard cookouts and picnics. So, for those of us who do not like to show up empty handed, this month’s recipe is the perfect comfort food to bring to any gathering. Pav Bhaji (“pav” meaning bread and “bhaji” being the vegetable curry) is a fast food dish that originated in Maharashtra, India and is now a popular street food found in many parts of the country. Although pav bhaji is typically considered a snack, it can also be enjoyed as a full meal, so don’t hesitate to make it as an entrée. Not only is the dish fairly simple to make, it’s also enjoyed by the pickiest of eaters. My favorite part about the dish is how easy the recipe is to adjust based on your guests’ preferences; you can add, subtract, or even swap out veggies (just be sure to modify the measurements) and you can control the level of spice. This recipe was actually inspired by a family picnic. Thanks to my grandmother (Amma) for providing the recipe! Let’s get started!

Ingredients Vegetables: 1 ½ cup potatoes (peeled and cubed) ½ cup cauliflower (florets) ½ cup carrots (chopped) ½ cup peas (can be frozen) ¾ cup water 2 ½ cups tomato (diced) 1 cup red onion (finely chopped, reserve ¼ cup for garnish) ½ cup green bell pepper (finely chopped) 1 cup water 2 tbs cilantro (finely chopped) Spices / Other: 1 ½ tbsp pav bhaji masala 1 tbsp garlic (minced) ½ tsp cumin seeds Chili Powder (to taste) Salt (to taste) Lemon Juice (to taste) 8 pieces pav (slider or burger buns)

Saathee.com

Servings: 3 - 4 Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 15 - 20 minutes

Directions 1

Start by adding the chopped potato, cauliflower florets, peas, and carrots to a pressure cooker with ¾ cup of water and a dash of salt. I used an Instant Pot and manually set the time to seven mins, this is about three whistles on a stove top pressure cooker. If you don’t own a pressure cooker, boil the veggies until softened and drain the water. Once cooked, mash the veggies until smooth in consistency. Set aside.

2

Now add 1 tbsp of butter and cumin seeds to a pan on medium-high heat. Once sizzling, add in the garlic and after 1-2 mins mix in ¾ cup onions and salt. When onions begin to brown, add in the bell peppers, and cook until softened. Finally, stir in the tomatoes, while sautéing I began to lightly mash the mixture to create a paste-like consistency.

3

Once the water has evaporated, stir in the pav bhaji masala and red chili powder (adjust to desired spice level). Add in the mashed veggies from earlier and about one cup of water and stir until combined.

4

For this next step feel free to adjust the amount of butter used. Start with 1 tbsp of butter in the bhaji (veggie curry), cover pan until butter is melted, and then stir until combined. I repeated this step two more times (three tbsp butter total), adjust according to how buttery you would like the gravy. Turn off heat and add in cilantro. Set aside.

5

Finally, prepare the pav (bread) by spreading butter on both sides of each bun and toasting on a pan until golden brown. Garnish the bhaji with cilantro and the remaining ¼ of finely chopped red onions. Now you are ready to serve! Side note: You can find pre-made pav bhaji masala at your local Indian grocer. Or if you have the following ingredients you can dry roast them and blend them into a powder; 4 tbsp coriander seeds, 2 tbsp cumin seeds, 1 tbsp fennel seeds, 1 black cardamom, 1 cinnamon stick, 8 cloves, 2 bay leaves, 2 tsp peppercorn, 2 tbsp red chili powder (adjust to desired spice), and 2 tsp dry mango powder.

Nutrition for Life

Dances of India

continued from page 34

continued from page 48

According to Ayurveda, there are also nuances about what foods may be better for you depending on the stage of life you are at. When you schedule a nutrition appointment with a Registered Dietitian, this is all we consider. It’s not as simple as me giving you a “diet chart” over WhatsApp or messenger. Each session is detailed and based on your nutritional needs according to your history and lifestyle. If you have any medical condition, soliciting quick weight loss diets or other such advise could be harmful to your health, and may even prove fatal at times. There may be consequences such as hormone imbalances resulting in extreme hair loss, sluggish metabolism, and other problems. More importantly, one plan does not work for everyone. Each person has unique needs and that must be taken into consideration as well. Just because someone has lost a lot of weight or is a personal trainer, or has taken an online or a three months certificate course in nutrition or someone who watches health shows or reads a lot on health –does not qualify her or him to be a dietitian. It is also important to note that doctors are not the most reliable source for nutrition advice and often give out wrong information. This is because during the eight years of medical school, there is sometimes just one basic nutrition course offered. Moreover, most physician office visits are for 15 minutes only. That is not enough time to take your proper history and talk about the ideal nutrition plan for you. Calorie counting does not always work. Carbs are not the enemy. Just because it’s cooked in olive oil does not make it healthier. Intermittent fasting is not for everyone! We do not need to do detox or juicing or take expensive powders or supplements. When you are looking to transform your health, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Always look for qualified health professionals (Registered Dietitians) that give you proper advise and can explain why they are recommending what they are recommending. Any quick solutions that sound too good to be true, probably are. Any plan that asks you to weigh and measure every ingredient every day is not practical. Check if you are being asked to eat a large quantity of any one particular food or to avoid any foods without explanation. Always keep the big picture in mind and think about lifestyle changes to improve overall health rather than looking for quick fixes. Make a well-informed decision for your health & ensure that whatever you embark on is simple to implement, practical, sustainable & affordable. And please don’t call it “dieting”!

Several people also ask me about the language barrier these second-generation Indians face in this country. They wonder how these students can express the stories told through dancing so beautifully. This language barrier is not unique to second generation. As India has so many spoken languages, it is almost impossible to learn them all. As teachers/gurus we explain the stories to the students to bring out the inner emotions of storytelling using dance as a medium. These classical dances have written instructions on the ways you can use your body to tell a story or express an emotion. Many teachers, who moved to the USA and make it their home, have a great opportunity to take it out of India and spread these seeds of culture. Many of the Indian dance teachers in the USA teach these dances to support themselves financially. Some teachers like me may want more out of it, such as reintroducing our culture to our own Indian community, introducing the culture to the non-Indian community and building recognition, appreciation, interest and respect for our culture. As we are learning Western culture, we should also teach Indian culture in exchange. We all have to learn to grow. Traditional dances have already gained popularity in the US. Thanks to many great musicians and performers who continue to contribute to this popularity. Each person’s contribution to these arts becomes an integral part of the overall vision to share these beautiful dance forms with the world. In my opinion, with the widely growing interest and popularity of Indian classical dances, the need and search for authentic exposition is pressing and dance shows of this dimension and character is indeed the need of the hour. Indian art is a Science, a discipline, an art and an exposition at the same time. With the co-operation, philanthropy and good will of art lovers in the USA, I am confident of promoting and fostering an appreciable understanding of the ancient cultural heritage of India among the aesthetic public. Arts are not to be restrained from sharing with others. They are suitable for all cultures. Dances of India production gives me this opportunity to share with pride my Indian heritage. heads, and one that might exist in the place we call “the world” – it’s the dawn of a new day. If we can stop treating parabolas and hyperbolas from the real world as circles and triangles, maybe we would make a different set of decisions and take a different set of actions, and engage more productively with the things around us. Just because we don’t recognize the existence of parabolas and hyperbolas doesn’t mean those shapes don’t exist. Maybe if our understanding expands, we add to our repertoire of shapes by including these hitherto unknown shapes. And the next time around, the parabola will be part of our parables, and the hyperbola will not be dismissed as mere hyperbole. But shaping our shapes is easier said than done.

Watch Your Health and Skills When we are younger, we are not paying much attention (maybe not as much) to our health probably because it is taken for granted (like the song says: we are invincible). At that age that is probably true. But how we take care of our health when we are young, will affect what it will be when older age creeps in. There is nothing better than proper diet and proper exercise to manage our health in both younger and older days. Healthcare is one area where expenses can creep up substantially as we get older. Aging is not for the faint of heart. If you have good health and marketable skills, you can still make good additional money to support yourself in the golden years. There are plenty of good examples: starting from tutoring to toy making/repairing, handyman’s work to sewing prom dresses to handcrafted jewelry and “Shapeless” is a shape too making cakes, among others. weren’t walking around in aprons making potatoes. They were assembling aircraft. The global spread of autocracy and the yearn to return to the “ye ole days” have also added fuel to the fire of sexism and racism. I have often debated not only here but with numerous political operatives about immigration over the years. America is under some delusion that the average citizen here wants to harvest grapes or strawberries or lettuce on 12 hour shifts with a 15-minute lunch break. Or they want to stand in slaughterhouses full of blood and guts at their feet. The pandemic has shown us an epidemic of Help Wanted signs as well. We salvaged corporate stocks by giving stimulus checks to the country, but never really gave employees a solution to what ails us. But the problem may be more far reaching. I worked blue color jobs for a quarter century after leaving a great job as an editor. I noticed early those wages remained stagnant during my entire experience in the printing industry. Bosses living in multi-milliondollar homes would give out $25 gift cards as annual bonuses at holiday parties. They always pretended to be broke. Employee morale was zero. People were sluggish on the best of days. Post-pandemic, I feel like the entire economy and workforce is sluggish. If I had an answer, I would be in Washington with a high paying job advising the economists. This is more of an existential crisis now. We can’t all be managers of course. But we also don’t take pride in working with our hands and crafting something. We don’t see a certain model car and say, “I made the alternators for that one.” We don’t see a label on lumber and say, “That seal is from my company.” So, seeing the collapse of the service industry as well is making me really nervous. The mailman tossing mail on my grass because the trash guys were in too much hurry and threw the trash cans in front of the mailbox. The delivery drivers leaving boxes in the rain when there is a clear sign on my door to deliver to back porch in case of bad weather. All this matters. All this is about pride. I do most of my housework myself. I take pride in how well I mop the floors or clean the kitchen. I take time to cook healthy meals for when the kids visit. I take pride in how I cut the grass or clean the windows. I take pride in how well I do my laundry. I then take pride in doing PR work for clients. I have worked those jobs in my life. As one of my bosses used to say, “When you are on my clock, you will clean toilets if I want you to.” It used to tick me off at the time because I was a former newspaper editor. I am always on my own clock. Housework earns me no money, but maybe we need to again learn to proudly clean toilets.

The country’s flag is a symbol of freedom, of course, but it is oft abused as a wrap by weak-minded chest thumpers, easily duped by TV personalities and selfserving politicians. The flag doesn’t proudly flutter but goes limp in the toxic hands of partisanship and narcissism disguised as patriotism. This symbol watches over us citizens as we argue and spar, unite or divide over our ideologies of democracy, citizenship and country. It watches over us during every election cycle, the action of democracy. This year’s political battles are being set for the midterm elections as the primaries roll along around the country, setting in place a plethora of candidates in myriad candidacies, local, regional, statewide, and national. The word freedom will be bandied about by many as if saying it qualifies them for public office. The stench of political commercials on TV will invariably get even more stinky as the summer progresses toward fall and into November. The ideas of freedom and the symbolism represented by the American flag need our unending vigilance. The flags of July will remain steadfast. They must. simple; do something for your neighborhood or a park nearby. Donate clothes, books, or food that you might already have an excess of. Research a cause that you are passionate about, and how you can help. I found that I was passionate about protecting the environment. I found that using my time in a productive manner while doing good for others, is another step to getting rid of Summer Blues. I went from feeling down in the dumps, to finding a new purpose in life; a purpose to find happiness for myself. I didn’t have to create happiness; I had to find it. It was deep down inside me all along. It is possible to find happiness. It all starts with you. You can either choose to act and do something for yourself, or you can continue to feel Summer Blues… I hope that you choose to take action because you deserve to feel happy. After working so hard in school, it is time to enjoy your life. While these tips worked for me, I would like to add that different people achieve happiness differently. If these tips do not work for you, I encourage you to take your own journey to find out what makes you happy, and what will rid you of your Summer Blues.

JULY 2022

Aries (March 21 – April 20)

Libra (September 22 – October 20)

You should regain your confidence, and by the end of the month everything will be under control. Business-related travel could bring unexpectedly good results. Your savings should definitely rise, and luck will favor you, but move fast as you may have to compromise your ideologies. Family will provide good support in achieving success. This is the perfect time to earn some extra money.

You may see inheritance income coming your way. Luck will favor you in best way possible. Try to avoid surrendering to power by using your keen intellect. Don’t wait until the end of month to make a move. Your lifestyle will accelerate, so be prepared to fully enjoy the fruits of such success. Ignore your ideologies or ethics this month. You could also gain a big break and achieve some fame in society.

Taurus (April 21 – May 20)

Scorpio (October 21 – November 20)

Your speech and ideals will help boost confidence. Your family will also benefit right along with you. You might receive some unexpectedly good news. Chances to gain a promotion at your place of work are good, but no big money will accompany it. It may be time to change your profession or residence. Success is assured in all your ventures.

Don’t give up! Destroy your enemies with an iron fist. This is also a positive time to enter into new relationships. However, an old friend may try to harm you by playing dirty games. Go ahead and spend on travel or luxury items during last week of the month. If you already have any major health issues, watch them very carefully.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21)

This month will relieve you from tensions and anxiety. On the domestic front you will be happy, and your long-cherished desires will be fulfilled. You might experience a great deal of travel this month which could prove to be both lucky and pleasant. Good health is also indicated but watch for any chance of accidental poisoning.

Be careful regarding your health during the middle of the month. Otherwise, you will meet some influential people. A rise in income is clearly indicated and income through speculation is also possible. However, your partner may cheat on you. Listen to your friends and associates. Enjoy a fun vacation this month.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 21)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Even though income will be on the rise and enjoy good health, you may still be unhappy. Curb any risk-taking tendencies and avoid major decisions this month. Your enemies will try to damage your reputation. A short distance business-related travel might prove fruitful. Long-distance journey is also possible. You could discover great relief to an old family-related problem.

Your confidence will be par excellence this month and your social circle should widen. Luck will favor you in earning some extra cash. However, you won’t be able to add any of it to your savings. Arguments with your partner could be a major issue this month. Bring some change into your life by visiting new places. An eye-related health issue is possible during second half. Be sure to practice meditation.

Aquarius (January 22 – February 18) Your hard work will provide dividends. A turning point in social relations is also evident. Short distance travel must be avoided. An encounter with an old friend is possible. If involved in publication or sales, encouraging results will be there. Don’t surrender to your competitors as they could harm you significantly. Drive very carefully.

Leo (July 23 – August 22) Now is the time to overcome on your enemies with full power and aggression as luck will be on your side. An unexpected rise in expenses is also possible this month. You will gain support from your siblings and associates. You may have to suppress your emotions to achieve success. Keep eye on your health as a sudden problem is possible during the last week.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Steady progress is clearly indicated this month. Friends and siblings will also offer support toward your success. Your business partners will also be very helpful, so be sure to work as a team to achieve it. You will undertake journeys connected to your career, which should be very fruitful. However, this is not a good time for religious and social ceremonies. A problem due to your child is also possible.

Virgo (August 23 – September 21) This will be an action-oriented period for you. Enjoy great success in your business or job due to your creativity. You will command respect and receive accolades from higher ups. Your mind will also shift toward an improved philosophy of life. However, be careful while dealing with your siblings and associates.

fleshed out, diverse, and relatable female characters who are so much more than “strong.” We should expect a truly human character whose kindness, drive, ambition, and courage inspire us to do the same. We should expect these characters to enjoy healthy relationships with other women, real-life flaws we can relate to, and intricate stories that don’t necessarily need to revolve around men. Let’s require equal representation, so that all kinds of women are showcased, and all kinds of narratives are explored… because we’re all so much more than that. It’s about time we bury Strong Female Characters, once and for all, because women are so much more than that.

Mirror Mirror

continued from page 22

or universe. These struggles and how our heroine reacts to them are what makes her more relatable and not just a stiff paper doll moving from scene to scene. Of course, girls and women should have the same opportunities as their male counterparts, which includes the ideal of strength. Unfortunately, this one characteristic has become the end all and be all of our ideal female characters. It seems somewhat ironic, then, that when we praise it as being so incredibly groundbreaking, we are instead reinforcing the concept that women are still generalized as the weaker sex. Any display of strength whether it be emotional, physical, mental, or otherwise is by default clearly exceptional. How often do you hear the phrase “Strong Male Character?” Probably never since it’s already accepted that all men are strong, so are instead called out when they are compassionate or shy; traits that are often associated with women. So, what needs to happen to make a woman strong, noble, and heroic? What challenges must these characters face in less brutal fictional worlds to make them believable? Simple. Give her the flaws, faults, and a true hero’s journey where she learns and grows along the way. A perfect example is Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise. She starts out as warrant officer with minimal combat training who’s part of a commercial space crew. She has no special abilities or portrayed as morally better or worse than anyone else on the crew. Throughout the first three films, she displays a multitude of flaws. The xenomorphs constantly terrify her. She doesn’t always have the right answer and often makes mistakes. Yet, Ripley still wins the same way any hero would… with wits, compassion and utilizing her ever growing knowledge of the enemy to her advantage. And while she does ultimately prevail, she also suffers much loss along the way. While I’m hardly the first person to discuss this trope. There’s other thing that’s often missing from such a topic: that the “Strong Female Character” must sacrifice their femininity and be just as ‘tough’ as a man to be appreciated. That brings me right back to Ripley, as her protection for the young girl Newt in Aliens offered a much more maternal side of her not often shown in conjunction with an action heroine. She shows a special tenderness toward Newt throughout the film that doesn’t diminish her overall presence and adds an extra layer to her motivations. Oh, and a woman can still be feminine without the additional role of love interest, plot device to move along a male character’s story, or one-dimensional sketch of what a woman is assumed to be. She should be a complicated character with a multitude of strengths and weaknesses; someone with complex motivations and real character development. I think it’s finally time to abolish the archetype and demand what we really want. Audiences deserve fullySaathee.com

The Quad

continued from page 56

Other alliances The underlying principle of the Quad has parallels with Aukus, a security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom and the US. This was announced in September 2021 with the initial purpose of helping Australia develop nuclear-powered submarines. There is also the “Five Eyes”, an intelligence-sharing arrangement among the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Quad’s fundamental difference is the presence of two Asian powers that are eager for support to balance against China on their doorstep. It is important to highlight that the Quad’s prominence is increasing in the context of almost complete silence from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). This is despite efforts to convince the ten Asean member states that the Quad provides opportunities beyond security, such as the already-mentioned investment pledge. New world order Looking from a more macro perspective, the Quad – together with Aukus, Five Eyes and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), a regional economic partnership – offers a big picture of the overall US strategy to contain China in the coming decades. We are not yet in a new cold war, but we no longer live in a unipolar world dominated by a hegemonic US. This reshaping of the international order was already underway, driven by the increasing assertiveness of China. But Russia’s assault on Ukraine, accompanied by Beijing’s “no limits” cooperation with Moscow, has hastened and exacerbated the drawing of lines across the globe. US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said in a recent speech: “Even as President Putin’s war continues, we will remain focused on the most serious long-term challenge to the international order – and that is the one posed by the People’s Republic of China.” We should not expect imminent direct conflict but it is clear that global strategic competition between the US and China is intensifying. The Quad is just the most recent example of how the teams are lining up. Article courtesy of theconversation.com 94
