A Smiling July Sun The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla

There is an axiom. Well, maybe not an axiom, but a mark of personal experience. The sand is always hotter than it looks. You know what I mean. The sparkly sand at beaches around the globe during a summer day. Even though I’ve bounced around on hot sand for decades, I thought I’d make a barefoot dash to the outdoor showers to rinse the salty water off my face after a dip in the ocean. This was on a trip to the beach on a blue-domed July weekend. I had left the dollar flip flops near the chairs where we had made our stand for the day, a short distance from where the sand and the water were in an endless battle of redrawing the boundary between themselves. Of course, I took a couple steps and jumped back to the half-buried flip flops parked under one of the beach chairs. The shiny sand on this late afternoon was hotter than the sun, a smiling July sun. I knew the sand would be hot, but experience flutters out of the brain when you are carefree and at one with the vast embrace of nature, in this case the salty waters swaying back and forth on a picturesque sandy beach. It’s moments like these where the dampness of life dries away, and you feel you want to live forever, under the lovely, smiling sun. It is also a perfect place for brief self-reflection, that unmarked spot between reality and the dreamworld. This self-reflection, whether done constantly or ignored, is a benefit or bane of so much human existence. It can land on you when least expected. Sitting in traffic. Maybe while hiking along a mountain stream. Lying in bed and staring at the ceiling at two in the morning. Under the influence of spirits, alcoholic or otherwise. Why am I here? What is it all for? Is this all there is? Is it the soul I feel inside me or is it just indigestion? It can happen when sitting on an idyllic beach when the constant breeze, an expanse of sky and the vastness of the sea makes you feel miniscule, almost non-existent, like one of the countless grains of sand underneath your feet.

Saathee.com

A bit of self-reflection is a good occasional exercise. But can this reflection, this self-analysis, become counterproductive? It can be. In other words, turning these inner peeks of you, your being, into complaints forms of regrets, grievances, missed opportunities and words spoken that should have been left unspoken. These gnawing feelings disguise themselves as selfreflection and can become the cause of much dampness in life for many folks. I have seen this among some friends. I have had bouts of it myself. What is in front of you, today, and what lies ahead in the near tomorrow are what matter. That seabird skimming the waters for a meal that catches your attention, children splashing in the water, in that moment, on that beach, is what matters. Aggragating a lifetime of petty differences, pointless bickering, and the shards of anger and disappointments, eating away at you like a leech, are not self-reflection or even self-analysis. Not on this summer day. Discontent can weigh heavy, but achieiving contentment, call it discontentment disinfected by a smiling July sun, can reignite the present, the today, and reset one’s mindset. It does for me. The drip and the drops of a passing rain shower on the beach, on that sunny day, is a passing of regrets. Let it pass because the sun will return and give you your day back. In there much promise awaits. This is, after all, the July of fireflies sprinkling lights across the backyards of America and fireworks shooting the skies across America. It is the month that flips the year to its second half, to give an affirmative pat on the back saying you can do this, finish undone work, maybe even repair broken connections. Live on. The past is a canvas of learned behaviors and experiences, regrets be damned. I like to visit the past in my mind on occasion, the good times, the bad times. It was a package deal. But self-reflection, a pause in life that is essential and warranted, if spent wisely, can get mired into recall of regrets and bitterness, if instead one seeks out complaint forms, pens ready. The sun always eventually parts dark clouds, warms cold days, becomes the antidote of apathy. Another July sun is here. It offers a pause, a moment to reflect for cleansing and repairs. The sweet July sun ages me another year, but it continues to smile upon me. Year after year.

Homecoming Returning to America During India’s Second Wave

by Shivani Tripathi After spending nearly two years in India, terror unleashed in two weeks made me quickly leave the country. In 2019 I took the bold step of being a fulltime writer in India, a country that has inspired countless people for many millennia. I spent nearly all of 2020 in Mumbai in different phases of lockdown but compared to the suffering experienced by millions of Americans, it seemed India had dodged the devastation many experts had predicted at the start of the pandemic. The anticipated postDiwali surge towards the end of 2020 thankfully did not occur and what many Mumbaikars deemed “normalcy” set in soon after the 2021 New Year’s curfew ended in the city. More people were out and about in the neighborhood, pictures of diners in restaurants saturated social media, travel packages were advertised in newspapers, and I was becoming increasingly restless. The casual conversations I would have with people made me think I was missing out on living in one of the biggest cities in the world. When chatting with vendors, especially when asking them to put their mask on, I was told that Covid is a conspiracy theory believed by wealthy, urban Indians or why else were people in small towns and villages Saathee.com

unaffected? Even global thought leaders were being asked why India didn’t have the number of cases expected from a country with well over a billion citizens. The massive, post-holiday Covid surge in the United States kept me vigilant, but the decline in cases within Mumbai and across India had me wondering was I being careful or unnecessarily fearful? In early February, on a whim, I went to a well-known chaat eatery and decided to order a plateful of the popular street snack, pani puri. I had not realized how much I had missed the crispy, sweet, savory and tangy treat until I experienced its iconic burst of flavor in my mouth. Pani puri kits were being delivered by restaurants and grocery stores, but the joy of eating the street snack by the street, and having it served outdoors by an employee who had on a mask, hair cover and gloves, with no other customers next to me, gave me the sense that I was responsibly enjoying Mumbai. I visited restaurants and famous khao gallis, or lanes lined with outdoor dining, that had been on my list for almost a year and explored famous sights such as Bandra Fort while being double-masked and socially distanced. In late March, after a twelve-month gap, I watched a film in a virtually empty mall, in a large IMAX theater with only a few other patrons. Such activities were giving me such joy and a sense of freedom that I did not know I had missed so much. There were still more exciting places and activities I wanted to check off my list but soon enough, headlines began appearing exclaiming Covid cases were rapidly increasing in Maharashtra. Numbers continued to rise, and it was only a matter of time before a lockdown would be announced in the state but whether it would be as strict as the one declared by the Prime Minister almost a year ago was debated. Families and businesses that were finally making ends meet were again faced with wondering how survival would be possible this time around. Simultaneously, my peers in America were getting vaccinated and soon after, posting photographs of them socializing and traveling with other vaccinated family and friends. Unlike 2020, where I would have been made to stay indoors whether in India of America, 2021 was becoming very different as the United States was continued on page 94

Rawail told an interviewer that the late Rishi Kapoor encouraged him to write the book. Rawail says he also discussed the idea with other Kapoor family members including Randhir Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. Rawail hinted that the book will cover his observations of working at RK Studios (the studio founded by Raj Kapoor) and tap into Raj Kapoor’s outlook on cinematic life and his sense of humor.

Knowledge Rashtrapati Bhavan The Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the President of India and is situated in Rajpath in New Delhi. The decision to build a residence in New Delhi for the British Viceroy was taken after it was decided during the Delhi Durbar in December 1911 that the capital of India would be relocated from Calcutta to Delhi. The Bhavan was the creation of Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. This mansion has a total of 340 rooms spread over four floors, 2.5 kilometers of corridors and 190 acres of garden area. Rashtrapati Bhavan often refers to the main building that has the president’s official residence, including halls, guest rooms and offices. It can also refer to the entire 320-acre Presidential Estate that also includes the Mughal Gardens, open spaces, residences of bodyguards and staff, stables, and other offices within its perimeter walls. In terms of area, it is the largest residence of any head of state in the world. The residence wing was so large that the last Indian governor-general, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, opted to live in the smaller guest wing, a tradition followed by subsequent presidents. The Mughal Gardens, incorporating Mughal and English landscaping, are situated at the back of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and are open for general public viewing in February– March every year during Udyanotsav. When constructed, it was called the Viceroy’s House. The name changed to Government House on August 15, 1947 when India became independent. Finally, its name was changed to Rashtrapati Bhavan during the term of President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. In July 2014, a museum inside Rashtrapati Bhavan was inaugurated by then President of India Pranab Mukherjee. The museum helps visitors to get an inside view of the Bhavan, its art, architecture and lives of past presidents. It took more than seventeen years to build the Presidential Palace. Saathee.com

USA  Knowledge White House The White House, Washington D.C. is the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. The residence was designed by architect James Hoban in the neoclassical style. Hoban modelled the building on Leinster House in Dublin. Construction took place from 1792 to 1800. President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later in 1909, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office, which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. By 1948, the residence’s load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls. The White House was built by over 200 known enslaved workers and at least 100 more were employed in nine presidential households. At least a dozen presidents, from Washington to Ulysses S. Grant, were slave owners. President Teddy Roosevelt wanted a more distinctive name, officializing its color-inspired nickname in 1901. It has 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms on six levels. The building and grounds are sprawled across 18 acres. Beginning on January 10, 1917, a group of women called “the Silent Sentinels” began protesting outside of the White House gates. The group represented the National Women’s Party and refused to move until women were given the right to vote. They camped out in front of the White House for six days a week for two and a half years, until June 4, 1919, when the 19th Amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote. The White House Office alone employs more than 500 people; the Office of the Vice President, nearly 100; the Military Office, around 1,300; and the Office of Management and Budget, about 500 people. There are also more than 500 Secret Service agents, and nearly 200 staffers on the president and vice president’s protective detail.

Welcome to the Island of Misfit Toys Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen “Everything in the universe has a purpose. There are no misfits, there are no freaks, there are no accidents. There are only things we don’t understand.” ~ Marlo Morgan I am still somewhat giddy while writing this as I was given the opportunity to experience the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in Charlotte right before it opened to the public. After shuffling through a twisting, dark hallway, your senses are then completely overtaken by just how immense the exhibit is. Every single nook and cranny of the space from floor to ceiling is illuminated with radiant color. Walking in felt almost like how Dorothy must have felt in the 1939 version of the Wizard of Oz when she opened the door and stepped out of the bland sepia tones of her house into the vivid shades of red, blue, green and yellow within the Munchkin village. Yeah. It was like that… but even better. Watching the exhibit itself, my mind continually shifted between the trepidation of each tiny moving brush stroke from one painting to another and the comforting warmth due in no small part to the gorgeous arrangements of music playing in sync with them. The last five minutes of the exhibit are gentle swirls of blue and yellow as a unique version of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” (arranged specifically for the exhibit by Luco Longobardi) hits your ears. By the time the presentation was over, I was still standing there… staring at near black screens with white lettered credits for a good minute or so as my brain was all but forced to assimilate all of the sensory input I had just watched in the past 35 minutes. My first thought when I had a much clearer view was not of how incredible the overall show had been, but instead I felt sadness that the very artist who made it possible never had the chance to see his work so treasured and admired like it is now. This is because Vincent Willem van Gogh was often regarded as a person who didn’t fit into the societal norms of his time. He was often seen as an intelligent yet quiet person who initially took up art as a way to cope with loneliness and kept it up for another 10 years after that. Amazingly he created over 860 paintings alone which include everything from portraits to landscapes to still life works. Unfortunately for most of his life Van Gogh was commercially unsuccessful and was often branded as both a madman and failure. Some today think perhaps he had some mental condition such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Perhaps he was just a misunderstood genius who found a strange place “where discourses on madness and creativity converge.” continued on page 80 July 2021

describes the fascinating relationship of her parents. The setting is pre-revolutionary Iran and her father is following a very challenging scientific education in Switzerland. His time is so constrained that he marries his love in Iran and asks the family to formally arrange the marriage without his presence. It is a tremendous culture shock for the traditional mother Tayi from very beginning when she arrives in Switzerland. Tavi is profoundly uncomfortable with her new husband Hossein’s indulgence in alcohol, dancing, and parties, as well as her perceived decadence of Swiss society. As the Iranian revolution unfolds, she is swept up in it, to her husband’s consternation. I loved everything about this film – the intimate view of a family in this important historical period, the clash of cultures not just outside of Iran but within the country, and the gorgeous cinematography, gently and invitingly paced.

By Dilip Barman The pandemic hit last year just before things were ramping up for Full Frame, the annual documentary film festival in Durham, NC. Its cancellation was the first harbinger for me of things to come. This year the festival was delayed from April to June and, the 24th annual fest was held virtually. Full Frame is always an excellent event and even for those of us fatigued by virtual events, it offered, as always, many compelling films – this year viewable from home. Though there were many less films (21 feature films and 15 shorts) than the typical year with around 100 films, and no hubbub and energy of the in-person event, it was another success through the strength and diversity of films, as could be expected. Hats off to the organizers for finding a way to have the event this year virtually. I was able to see a few films. Overall, the Festival was again entertaining, exciting, fascinating – all the adjectives that bring people together to enjoy documentaries (truth can be more interesting than fiction!). Here are a few films that I saw and others that look particularly appealing. A limited number of tickets were available while several screenings sold out.

I have admired the small-town midwestern insight of Pulitzer Prize winner Art Cullen as I have followed his appearances on PBS’ Newshour during the last election cycle. Storm Lake (Dirs. Jerry Risius and Beth Levison, 2021) follows Cullen in small-town Storm Lake, Iowa as he runs his biweekly Storm Lake Times (circulation of almost 3000) newspaper. With so many local newspapers closing, the film reinforces the importance of news – good, well-written, and empathetic to local needs – to small communities through the lens of what is important to them. News and informed democracy are too often viewed top-down, but this charming film reminds us of the value and impact of inductive and localized reporting. Involved as an alum for two schools in the interview process for students applying to college, I found Debbie Lum’s 2021 film Try Harder! particularly interesting. The film explores stereotypes of Asian families as being laser-focused on getting their children into top universities. The film follows students at Lowell High School, a San Francisco public school with a large majority of Asian students, and their smarts, family pressure and support, and dedication to college admissions. Though there were many disappointments in admission decisions, the film was otherwise very positive in portraying all the characters as being likable and wanting not just themselves but their peers to succeed. I was able to see several shorts. The dramatically powerful black-and-white cinematography of Spirits and

Speaking of being sold out, one film that I didn’t see and was sold out is My Name is Pauli Murray (Dir. Betsy West & Julie Cohen, 2021). I live in Durham, NC, and it’s exciting to have a local hero depicted in a film by the directors of the very well-received RBG (2018) about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was influenced by Pauli Murray. A large mural a short walk from Full Frame offices and festival site honors this social justice non-binary Black activist who lived in Durham for a while. She was an early champion of civil and sexual orientation rights in the 1930s, coining the term “Jane Crow” and wrote a book in 1950 that was seminal in the legal fight against segregation, and became a friend of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Both her importance and the reputation of the directors make this a must-watch film. I was immersed in Radiograph of a Family (Firouzeh Khosrovani, 2021) almost from the very beginning. Through archival footage and family photographs, the director Saathee.com

So, You Are an Artist?

Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani

I have often talked about the nature of “Art” over the years – and still think about it sometimes. But one of the first victims of maturity (or old age) is our life in fantasyland. The isolation of the last 18 months brought me closer to answering questions about where my life was heading approaching retirement. A lot of us sometimes put aside their artistic goals because life intervenes. Where am I now? Over the months I have argued with family and friends worldwide about what they consider art. Lots of them post their writing, paintings, pottery, jewelry, theater photos, costume designs, etc. I occasionally post a short experimental poem – which some people like, and others are offended by. But I am in possession of the truth now; and wonder if I know something that is so earth-shattering that simply revealing it will knock the moon out of orbit and wobble the planet’s inner peace. The one thing I did learn publishing a literary magazine and many books in the mid-90s was that artists were a different kind of people. I published and met a few national

caliber writers, and a lot of regional writers. The common denominator in these people was one: OCD. We normal folks kind of lose interest in things after a while. I mean, start a project, break for a beer or tea, then forget the project. About 20 years later you go up into the attic and smile at the half a face you had painted on the canvas when you were in your “Van Gogh” stage. Van Gogh types not only had serious mental demons, they also didn’t have too many obligations in life. They obsessively wrote letters to people about their next project, and considering they were broke and hardly recognized as good artists in their lifetimes, their family and friends probably thought, “Let the idiot paint.” The early Picasso paid his restaurant bills by drawing sketches on napkins, and the restaurant owner probably thought, “Well, he’s a nice enough local artist.” A Picasso napkin today – well, let’s not even discuss its value. And the list goes on. Artists were recognized by the aristocrats who admired, and sometime financed, them as being sophisticated thinkers. The royalty in both the East and West treated

Ayurveda: Eastern Healing Practices Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod First of all, thank you to those of you who messaged me about this column missing from the June issue. From now on, you will see my column on alternate months. Recently there has a been a lot of focus on Integrative and Functional Medicine from a Western perspective. So, I wanted to focus a little more on Eastern healing practices, and specifically Ayurveda. I know I have mentioned some tips about digestion and other tidbits in my previous articles, but I wanted everyone to have some basic foundational knowledge. For that purpose, I reached out to Nidhi Agrawal for her expertise. Hope you learn some useful tips from my interview with her. What are the basic principles of Ayurveda? Ayurveda is the ancient system of living a healthier and happier life. Ayurveda teaches us the relationship between living and its surrounding environment. It discusses practical approaches for taking care of the universe, which we are a part of, and teaches us to a bring balance of mind-body-spirit. Each person has a unique constitution in relationship with the universe. According to Ayurveda, humans (microcosm) are part of the universe (macrocosm). Our physical makeup is a combination of five essential elements present in the universe - ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Each element has its own characteristics, and principle. According to Ayurveda there are four aspects we need to keep in balance to maintain the health of mind, body, and spirit and these are: The Doshas, Dhatus, Malas and Agni. Can you briefly explain how the elements and doshas are connected? The essential elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) are building blocks of all matter. All creations, including humans, are made of combinations of these five elements. These essential elements are manifested in humans in three energies, called TRIDOSHA-Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The doshas are energies that make our constitution and govern our body, mind and spirit. Each dosha is made up of two of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth). Vata dosha is a combination ether and air, Pitta is a combination of fire and water, and Kapha is combination of water and earth elements. The doshas exhibit the characteristics of the elements from which they are made of. All diseases are caused by an imbalance continued on page 56

Timeless Traditions of Rajasthan Dances of India by Dr. Maha Gingrich I was doing a presentation for a corporation on the global influence of Indian dances. I was discussing both classical dances and folk and tribal dances. Especially, we cannot forget the Russian Gypsy connection to Indian Gypsy. Many folk traditions have the similar flowing skirts and movements, and they also dance barefoot. When I was sharing some images, I had to share the beautiful architecture and folk costumes of Rajasthan. When we think of Rajasthan, we think of beautiful palaces shown in movies like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Padmavati and so on. We also see the elaborate royal clothing and jewelry. As a dancer when I think of Rajasthan, I think of the pirouettes, swirls, acrobatic movements, and incredible costumes with vibrant colors, the intricate folk jewelry, timeless and diverse dances. Rajasthani dances require not only grace, but also elegance, flexibility, acrobatic moves, and dynamic music filled with toe-tapping tempo. A few years ago, when we did the Ghoomar dance during the Dances of India production, people were spellbound. Ghoomar, meaning going in circles, was originally restricted to be performed only by Rajput women continued on page 66

A New Bucket List Namaskar, Y’all by Shyama Parui “101 Things to Do Before You Die”, “The Bucket List: 1000 Adventures Big & Small”, “1000 Places to See”… etc. These titles screamed at me when I typed “coffee table books” in the search field of a popular online retailer. My quest to immerse myself in stunning photographs was foiled and instead I was faced with thoughts on mortality and the finite nature of time. Perhaps that was not so bad. It compelled me to make plans to actually visit the places captured on those glossy pages. Tucked in our back pocket is the bucket list that is often forgotten leading to the familiar feeling of lament when there is so much to do, yet so little time. We crave more hours in a day, more weeks in a year and our urgency to grab those precious seconds has escalated. Prolonged introspection has nudged me to revise my bucket list previously driven by wanderlust, the assumption of longevity and an illusion of safety. It is almost cliché to say that COVID 19 has made us acutely aware of life’s unpredictable turns and combined with my reluctant acceptance of middle age, I have consciously altered my vantage point. It is not lost on me that I have much to be grateful for. The privilege to have the opportunity to even draft a collection of future desires at the tail end of a deadly pandemic is a boon. My appreciation for the people instrumental in helping me check things off on my current list has grown ten-fold. The little girl in Mumbai who wanted to fly, remembers being overjoyed by her first experience as a passenger on a plane. It sounded way more exciting than waving at planes that flew over. Along the way, her goals to learn how to swim and drive her own car were achieved. And then her teen years sowed the seeds of globetrotting. During the late 80’s and early 90’s, travel shows on Doordarshan were rare and scenic locations in Bollywood movies often inspired people’s destination choices if they were yearning for haseen vadiyan (lovely outdoors) and khula aasman (open skies). One of the shows that did encourage my generation to gain a more immersive cultural experience on trips, was “Surabhi”. Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak’s series about unique cultural traditions from different corners of India was fascinating. Even though the Tourism Department’s campaign of Incredible India was arguably successful and tempting, my family of small business owners continued on page 66

The Thinker Thinks… About The Thinker

Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad

“Alas, the frailty is to blame, not we For such as we are made of, such we be.” - William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night

Also, it is not sufficient for our purposes to just integrate the new data with the existing gray-matter patterns inside us; we find it necessary to beat it into different abstract shapes and patterns to allow our limited cognitive capacities to make “sense” of it. Clearly some dexterity with data analysis is something that we all can benefit from. But that is not the end of the road. Data for its own sake is useless. We are interested in data in the first place because we feel the need to make our lives better in some way. This often involves solving problems.

“Problem solving and data analysis” is one of the math topics that is tested on the SAT. Caring for a Child who Needs Lifetime Assistance

the first tiny step towards getting the benefits. Needless to say, benefits vary by state; through Medicaid as well as other agencies they may have programs such as developmental disability and autism etc. How much benefit is clearly defined by age and 18 is the magic threshold. Before the child turns 18 parents’ income and assets are counted in most aid calculations but families can apply for Medicaid waivers as long as the child does not have more than $2,000 in assets in his/her name. How much and which benefit varies largely by the State laws. The benefits can fund caregiver services, home modification and equipment not covered by insurance (up to $10,000). The largest benefit is to defer the cost of custodial or home care. Which state you live in does matter with Medicaid waivers more likely in Northern states than in the South. Suddenly parents’ decision as to the place of retirement is somewhat dictated by the dependent child. When the child crosses 18, he/she is eligible for supplemental security insurance (SSI) based on the level of their disability. Again, the total assets of the child must be under $2,000. If the beneficiary inherits or even gets a job, it could conceivably disqualify them from the state assistance. One way to avoid this is through what is known as ABLE account. It does help to investigate this but there are limitations on this, too. A special needs Trust is an option used by many parents; these trusts can shelter assets. For example, not only parents, but grandparents and conceivably others who wish to bequeath money to a special needs child can add assets to such trusts. The same holds for life insurance policies that pay upon death of the parents to pay for child’s needs. It should be noted that these trusts are irrevocable; the money that goes in, cannot come out for any other purpose other than the child’s benefit and for the beneficiary of the trust after the child passes on. Trust assets do not get a stepup in basis in terms of taxes when they inherit it. The cost of setting up such a trust is high too. It should be noted here that selecting a successor guardian and preparing them for the task is critical; the focus in all this must be the specialneeds individual and there should be some chemistry between the individual beneficiary and the guardian. While taking care of the disabled child, the other siblings and the needs of the caretakers themselves (generally parents) get ignored, which could often be the case. It is wise to ascertain that much thought is given to those aspects and arrangements made in the Trust or otherwise to relieve the caretakers periodically and the other siblings too are well cared for and paid attention to. Not only as an equal right sibling of the disabled, but also for their emotional, scholastic and social growth needs.

Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans

Raising a child is, to start with, a monumental task, as all parents would readily attest. If we have to look after a child who needs some special assistance, the tasks get even more complicated. Physical and mental stress for sure, but also financial stress too and this is, at times, despite having health insurance. Getting the child assessed to qualify for support programs, fighting for benefits and finding appropriate therapists amongst many other tasks, can become a fulltime job, one that can easily rack up tremendous costs. It is an ongoing journey, and we are in it usually for life. During my yearly tax volunteer work that I do, I come across mothers who are in their 70s and are taking care of a disabled child of 50+ and they don’t have much money to show either. Think about that situation for a while. Their biggest worry is, as expressed often by them, what would happen when they are not around to take care of the child. That is indeed the top concern amongst the surveys of special-need families. According to Census Bureau data, about 10 percent of children under 18 -about 7.5 million- have a severe disability. A survey done by American College of Financial Services found that 70 percent of special needs families were worried that they would have to compromise retirement to care for a loved one with special needs. This becomes a double whammy for most; they will be short on their retirement funds, and they will have to take care of the person when they are physically not able to. When there is a special needs child, the financial planning aspect takes a different turn altogether because the conventional financial planning takes a backseat or at least it will extend well beyond the traditional plans of the parents. Now the planning does not stop at the time of their own demise but gets extended 30 or 40 years beyond that timeframe. The estimates of costs can leave anyone with a sticker shock. The lifetime costs for a person with autism averages around $2 million depending on the severity of autism. According to Autism Speaks, an advocacy group, someone who needs 24/7 residential care can easily pay $100,000 a year. Even those who don’t need intensive support can incur a mountain of out-of-pocket costs. Even if one has the best health insurance, there are still limits as to how far they will keep on supporting such efforts. When thinking about the costs and future plans, the Mo Vidwans focus shouldn’t be just on the diagnosis but rather also on is an independent, board certified financial planner. It will be the organization’s first in-person convention since 2019, as the pandemic forced AAHOA to hold the 2020 convention virtually. AAHOA is the foremost resource and advocate for America’s hotel owners, with the mission to advance and protect the business interests of hotel owners through advocacy, industry leadership, professional development, member benefits, and community engagement. AAHOA is the largest hotel owners association in the nation. The 19,500+ AAHOA Members own almost one in every two hotels in the United States. Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in Charlotte Story and Photos By Jennifer Allen “We are so lucky we are still alive to see this beautiful world. Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character. The black is in fact deep blue. And over there, lighter blue. And blowing through the blueness and the blackness, the wind swirling through the air and then, shining, burning, bursting through, the stars. Can you see how they roar their light? Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.” ~ Vincent van Gogh (Tony Curran) from ‘Vincent and the Doctor’, Dr. Who June 3, 2021 The Blumenthal Performing Arts in Charlotte invited the local press to get a “hard hat” sneak preview of the new Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit. I jumped at the chance since I am already quite enamored by van Gogh’s various works. While everyone was treated to just a tiny portion of the exhibit, what we did see is nothing short of magical. Each painting is shown in crisp detail upon large walls with animations shifting from one piece to the next. A modern arrangement of Samuel Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ played in sync with swirls of yellow, brown and blue that danced around and gradually parted to show us various self-portraits by the artist himself. If this small taste is anything to go by, then the full Exhibit will be an even more spectacular experience when it opens to the public. The Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit has found a home at Camp North End in Charlotte from June 17 to September 12, 2021. The over 75,000 Saathee.com

opportunity to advance its research aboard the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory. Team WFIRM will receive the second-place prize of $100,000. The research may help enable the growth and long-term survival of thick three-dimensional tissues for research and therapeutic applications, and eventually organ bandages and replacements. In the near term, they could accelerate pharmaceutical testing and disease modeling. “I cannot overstate what an impressive accomplishment this is. When NASA started this challenge in 2016, we weren’t sure there would be a winner,” said Jim Reuter, NASA associate administrator for space technology. “It will be exceptional to hear about the first artificial organ transplant one day and think this novel NASA challenge might have played a small role in making it happen.” Tissues in the body rely on blood vessels to supply cells with nutrients and oxygen and remove metabolic waste – a process known as perfusion. As it isn’t easy to recreate this process in engineered tissue, NASA asked teams to develop and test strategies for making tissues with functional artificial blood vessels. The winning teams used 3D printing technologies to create gel-like molds, or scaffolds, with a network of channels designed to maintain sufficient oxygen and nutrient levels to keep the constructed tissues alive for their 30-day trials, as specified in the challenge rules. Winston and WFIRM used different 3D-printed designs and different materials to produce live tissues that harbored cell types found in human livers. In space, the models could be used to study how radiation exposure affects the human body, document organ function in microgravity, and develop strategies to minimize damage to healthy cells while living or working in space. For more information about NASA challenges and crowdsourcing, go to: Nasa.gov/solve/index.html.

Wake Forest Scientists Engineer Complex Human Tissues Win Top Prizes in NASA Challenge Two teams of scientists from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, have won first and second place in NASA’s Vascular Tissue Challenge. The competition aims to accelerate tissue engineering innovations to benefit people on Earth and space explorers in the future. Competing as teams Winston and WFIRM, each used a different approach to create lab-grown human liver tissues that were strong enough to survive and function in ways similar to those inside the human body. The teams each used a varied 3D printing technique to construct a cubeshaped tissue about one centimeter thick and capable of functioning for 30 days in the lab. Team Winston, the first team to complete its trial under the challenge rules, will receive $300,000 and has the Saathee.com

The energy and beauty of all the dances performed in Rajasthan is a divine gift. This state is truly embodied in its various dance forms its spirit and creativity. Art has always been an integral part of Rajasthani culture and its people. All over India and abroad the legacy of Rajasthani dance forms continues to flourish making them timeless.

Dances of India

continued from page 48

(the royal families). Here the ladies dance with elegant hand movements wearing colorful lahangas or large skirts. As they go in circles the skirts flare beautifully giving you a spectacular dimension. The Indian film Padmavati has a super dance if you would like to see this dance style. Then there is a dance of chivalry called Geendad. This is an exclusively male dance requiring years of experience as they carry swords or sticks and jump and exchange positions in a circle. These are real swords making it a dangerous dance form like the martial arts of Kerala. Same kind of precision is needed as they also do fire dances where they eat fire and jump through the fire rings. Yes! Like in the Renaissance festival. The other exclusively male dance is the Gair. It was originally performed only by men but has now developed into an inclusive dance form. However, usually men and women dance in separate circles. Men wear long, pleated tunics that open out into full-length skirts. Here when they are dancing it seems as if they are depicting a scene from a war front. It is believed by the locals that this dance must have some significance to war. This form of dance is also seen in Africa and Central Asia. The sticks used in the dance are called Khanda. These sticks are very attractive and catch every eye. They play a vital role in the dance. They are very thin and light, and give a flare look. They are cut from the gundi tree and involve very little cleaning. In some places swords are used, instead of sticks, making it very difficult for the dancers and challenging them on precision. Rajasthan also is known for religious dance forms. We have many pictures of beautifully dressed snake charmers with turbans. The Kalbelia community, or snake charmers of Rajasthan, do a beautiful snake dance to the tunes of the Been instrument. During this dance, they worship the Snake God and imitate the snake with difficult back bends and hand movements. The Terah Taali dance is a ritual dance performed as an ode to Baba Ramdev with 13 cymbals called Manjeera tied to their bodies, creating music with great speed while making it look easy. To make it more complicated they also hold a sword between their teeth and place pots with lit lamps on their heads. How can you not be focused when you do a complicated dance such as this? That focus itself is a ritual and a trance, as I call it “A prayer in motion”. The Bhavia is a dance that was influenced by the neighboring state of Gujrat. This dance is incomprehensible as I watch with horror. The dancer balances nine brass pots on his or her head. Then they stand on a sharp sword or glass and continue their dancing with graceful hand movements and speed. The dance that touches the hearts of all ages is the Kathputli (the Puppet) dance. Years ago, the classic Bollywood movie Chori, starring Nargis and Raj Kapoor, brought attention to this dance form. It was also featured in the newer movie Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. These puppet shows tell the folk stories, stories from Ramayana and Mahabharat and other literatures. Due to the intricacies of making these puppets, these dances have not been spreading beyond its origin. Saathee.com

found it hard to take frequent or long vacations. One of my mother’s biggest regrets is missing pilgrimages. For that very reason, my husband and I vowed to raise travel in its priority. On the flip side, I was glad to discard some potential misadventures. For instance, I always wanted to learn how to make mochar dalna – a Bengali favorite. Mocha, not to be mistaken for coffee, is the word for banana blossom in Bengali and it is plucked out from the large purple bud, cleaned, and chopped. A woefully lengthy process resulting in a taste that is not quite proportionate to the effort. So, witnessing its preparation was satisfactory to me. My shortlived desire to eat unusual foods vanished after I tried escargot. Squids, worms, and insects stayed in the inedible category. And I have no intention of conquering my fears even though the movie, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, made a strong and entertaining case for it with three handsome actors. You may ask why, but rules or explanation defeat the purpose. As you chronicle your life’s sojourn, these bucket list items are the lookout points you stop by. They are not critical to reaching your destination, but they invigorate you along the way, bringing me back to “My New & Improved Bucket List.” • Around the world in more than 80 days – the idea is to gallivant and enjoy the journey making beautiful memories. • Take one or a few trips down memory lane with my children. They may groan and complain while I have them try vada-pav (popular Indian street food), visit the gorgeous, 150-year-old campus of St. Xavier’s College and wander through Howrah, my parent’s hometown in West Bengal. Nevertheless, I am confident that they will thank me for it….at some point in their lives. • My last travel related goal is to embark on at least one trip as a solivagant otherwise known as a solitary wanderer. • Write a book, which seems simple, but is not an easy task. • Chase my impossible dream because, woh zindagi hi kya jisme koi na mumkin sapna hi na ho? (Roughly translated as, every life should have an impossible dream). • And most importantly, fill the bucket with drops of joy by pledging to make everyday matter. Play the boardgames, listen to your kids laugh, do something special for your spouse, even if he chews loudly or she frowns too often. Lassi 3 Ways

Saathee RECIPES

Three cheers for the red, white, & blue and sweet summertime! Happy Independence Day and Happy Summer Saathee family! As we roll into the heat of the next couple months, this recipe is sure to be a hit! Lassi is a yogurt-based beverage that originated in Punjab and can be served both sweet and savory. One of the most popular ways to enjoy it is with mango, or you can simply season it with spices such as cumin & salt. Lassi is also known to have loads of health benefits due to the Yogurt or homemade dahi used to make the drink. Yogurt is of course packed with calcium which improves bone health and strength, as well as probiotics which aid in overall gut health. It can also help with digestion and prevent issues such as bloating! So, you’re not only getting a delicious and refreshing drink this summer, you’re promoting the healthy lifestyle that we all strive for! This recipe takes only 10 minutes to prepare, and I’ll walk you through 3 different versions! For more easy recipes and How-To Videos visit www.saathee.com/taige.

Ingredients 2 cups Yogurt or Dahi 1 ripe Mango (puréed) 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries 2-3 tsp sugar ¼ tsp ground cumin ¾ cup water Salt

Saathee.com

Serves: 3 people Prep Time: 10 mins By: Taige Shukla Special thanks to Charu (Amma) Shukla

Directions

Sweet (Red White and Blue) Lassi: Start with 6 tbsp of yogurt and mix in about ¼ cup of water. Using a blender or wooden hand churner, blend until smooth. If too watery add in more yogurt, if too thick add in more water. Blend in 2-3 tsp of sugar, feel free to adjust the amount of sugar based on how sweet you like your lassi! Once the lassi is ready, top with your favorite fruit and enjoy! Since it’s July I decided to be festive and go with a red, white & blue theme by using strawberries and blueberries. The tartness from the berries are the perfect combination with the creamy, sweet lassi. Mango Lassi: Start by cutting and puréeing a ripe mango. In a cup add 4 tbsp of yogurt and almost ¼ cup of water, again adjust the amount of water and yogurt according to how thick you’d like it. Blend until smooth. Now mix in your mango purée until well combined. Typically mango will add the perfect amount of sweetness to the lassi, however if your mango doesn’t do the trick feel free to add in sugar to taste! Mango lassi is my absolute favorite and I love serving it alongside desi dishes that may have an extra kick of spice. Savory Lassi: Start with 6 tbsp of yogurt and mix in about ¼ cup of water. Blend until smooth and adjust yogurt & water according to how thick you want the lassi to be. Mix in ¼ tsp cumin, a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar. Adjust the level of salt according to taste preference and blend until combined. For savory lassis you can also choose to add in cilantro and ground pepper for some extra flavor!

Artisan Robots with AI Smarts They will juggle tasks, choose tools, mix and match recipes and even order materials – all without human help By Glenn S. Daehn Failure of a machine in a factory can shut it down. Lost production can cost millions of dollars per day. Component failures can devastate factories, power plants and battlefield equipment. To return to operation, skilled technicians use all the tools in their kit - machining, bending, welding and surface treating, making just the right part as quickly and as accurately as possible. But there’s a declining number of technicians with the right skills, and the quality of things made by hand is subject to the skills and mood of the artisan on the day the part is made. Both problems could soon be solved by artificially intelligent robotic technicians. These systems can take measurements; shape, cut or weld parts using varied tools; pass parts to specialized equipment; and even purchase needed materials – all without human intervention. Hybrid autonomous manufacturing, this process, involves automated systems that seamlessly use multiple tools and techniques to build high-quality components where and when they are needed. I am a professor of metallurgical engineering. My colleagues and I design the recipes to make materials and components with just the right internal structure to create properties like strength and fracture resistance. With a network of colleagues at Ohio State and other universities, I have been developing a plan to give birth to these autonomous artisans. How things are made Components are either mass-produced or custommade. Most things people touch daily have been massproduced. Quality is assured by using well-honed processes based on testing and monitoring large numbers of parts and assuring the process is done the same way every time. Custom fabrication – making components on demand – is often essential, sometimes to conform to a patient’s specific anatomy or to replace aircraft landing gear that was forged and is no longer being made. Processes for making metallic parts – material removal, deposition, deformation, transformation, inspection – can all be done with small tools, with incremental actions rather than the kind of bulk processes, usually with big tools and dies, used in mass production. continued on page76

pieces of hybrid autonomous manufacturing exist now, and fully autonomous systems could be common in a decade. Companies adopting this approach to custom fabrication will need to draw on a new generation of students with the skills to combine these technologies. The investments proposed in the United States Innovation and Competition Act passed by the Senate on June 8, 2021, and those in the Biden administration’s proposed American Jobs Plan could support development of these kinds of advanced manufacturing technologies. Funds for the development of advanced manufacturing technologies and the associated skills base could make U.S. manufacturing more competitive.

Automation has long been a part of mass production, which includes sophisticated robots that handle parts and weld on automobile assembly lines. Additive manufacturing, often referred to as 3D printing, is increasingly being used with a variety of materials to make components. Automated customization – not an oxymoron To automate custom fabrication, my colleagues and I are developing an automated suite of tools that can carry out all the steps for making a wide range of components, using multiple processes without human intervention. Sensors will also be central to hybrid autonomous manufacturing to control the processes and maintain and assure quality. Such autonomous manufacturing systems will make the myriad decisions needed to create a component of the right strength, size and surface finish. Artificial intelligence will be required to handle the enormous number of choices of materials, machine settings and process sequences. Rather than finding a mass production recipe and never deviating, these autonomous manufacturing systems will choose from a very large set of possible recipes to create parts and will have the intelligence to assure that the chosen path produces components with the appropriate material properties. Robots could either position small tools on manufactured component or transfer the component from one piece of equipment to another. A fully autonomous system could manufacture a wide range of products with a versatile set of tools. The systems could source materials and possibly even send work out to specialized cutting and deformation tools, just like a human artisan. The production rate of such systems would not rival those of mass production, but because robots can work continuously they can be more productive than human technicians are. Data from sensors provide a digital record of all the steps and processes with critical temperatures, machine settings and even images. This record can assure quality by, for example, making sure the material was deformed the right amount and cracks were not produced during the process and covered up. Manufacturing at or near the operating room is one example of a process that can be enabled with hybrid autonomous manufacturing. Often when patients with bone fractures undergo trauma surgery, metallic plates of varied shapes are required to hold bones together for healing. These are often created in the operating room, where the surgeon bends plates to fit the patient, sometimes using a 3D-printed model created from medical images of the patient as a form to bend the metal against. Bending by hand is slow and imprecise, and stressing the plate in the wrong place can cause it to fracture. A robotic technician could cut and bend and finish a plate before surgery. Patients do better and save money if they spend less time in the hospital.

Thinking

continued from page 58

Nature resists framing The difference between us and the universe is simple: emotion. We want things to be what we want them to be, and within timeframes that we decide to impose as deadlines. Nature, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to particularly care for anything to be this way or that. And even if it does, it seems to operate in timescales that are far greater than human time horizons. Given this mismatch between our nature and nature’s nature, we are likely to do our own thing while nature does its thing. And so, the problems we frame in our “humanverse” can be quite tangential, even irrelevant, in the real one that we are compelled to live in. The framer is also a gamer Regardless of the quality of the “problems” we frame, for better or for worse, they are what we use to focus our energy on as we hunt for “solutions” to these fabrications. These solutions will end up moving something somewhere. So, it is important that we are careful with these, and realize that while problems might influence our thinking in incorrect ways, solutions can be worse – they can shift things in the real world to the wrong places. For, this is where the rubber meets the road. Or doesn’t. Alas, the same human weaknesses that lead to the poor framing of problems cause us to create solutions that can do us harm rather than the good that we crave. When we are filled with excessive fear or desire, we can be like desperately thirsty wanderers in an arid, merciless desert, seeing mirages everywhere as solutions that will slake our thirst. This is what happens when we play games with our mind – we think we get a solution, but we get something that can lead to our dissolution instead. The challenge is to somehow improve the framing of problems and stop ourselves from gaming our own minds to create illusory solutions that can destroy us. If we realize the existence of this “meta-problem”, the focus shifts away from the problems and solutions that the harried thinker needs to deal with. The emphasis moves to the thinker, with the enlightenment that the thinker is much more important than the thinking. Or the data. After all, what use is data if the thinker is corrupt?

The road to robotic artisans Numerous companies are now showing the way forward in autonomous manufacturing, including three venturefunded startups. FormLogic is developing automated highquality machine shops. Path Robotics is putting the skills of a welder into a robot. And Machina Labs is out to create robotic blacksmiths. Other companies are developing systems to automate design and logistics. Balaji Prasad Hybridization – the ability to carry out different tasks in is an IIT/IIM graduate, a published author, SAT/ACT Online and in-person Coach, and different ways with multiple tools – is the next step. craft or compose a poem is not really art. It is like yoga. It has psychological benefits, and you can be sure that your mom or your uncle David will love it and give you a big encouraging hug and boast to neighbors and friends about the crooked vase you made. But are you an artist? It takes thousands and thousands of hours to master a guitar. Where do you stand as a guitarist? I don’t know. Very few of us nowadays have commissions from royalty to look at trees and sunsets all day so we can do the Zen of the Art or the Art of the Zen thing. We also have to be pleasant people, which a lot of selfabsorbed artists are not. Most of the writers today have a day job, perhaps unrelated to art, or maybe teach art at a college, etc. The big money is a complex lottery of talent, luck, and connections – and it comes at the price of your freedom as a thinker and creator: then your audience wants more; your publisher wants to be richer; the reviewers want fresh material; you need Botox to keep playing the roles you played 30 years ago. I’m no artist. I wrote some fiction and poetry and published way back in a few journals. But I’m not going to write eight hours a day any more than I will do ballet or gymnastics eight hours a day. The obsession is just not in me. Something sparks occasionally and I write something and fire it off to some family or friends, and they send me an emoji thing of clapping hands. That makes me happy enough.

them with respect. There was a degree of fear in the lives of the rich and powerful that they needed the music, the theater, the poetry, the philosophy, the religion in their lives. It was oxygen for the bored folks who had everything. Indeed, many writers like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky could easily have been arrested and jailed by Russia. The authorities feared Art. And it intimidated me back in the day. One evening drinking with a famous poet I made the weird statement, “I would classify myself as on the crazy side of hysteria.” He immediately reached into the bag that writers often carry and took out a dog-eared notebook and jotted that down. I was curious. Thinking back, I saw painters making rough sketches of trees or restaurant scenes because the angles and lighting seemed to intrigue them. I guess you can reach some point in your career, if you are lucky enough to be recognized in your lifetime, where you can be a full-time artist, and where what you create is adored by an audience. Actors and bestselling authors have enjoyed that for generations. They can actually make money (sometimes obscene amounts) from their craft. F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote “The Great Gatsby” in just a few weeks to make some quick cash. And infamously, Ernest Hemingway put a gun to his head because – well, we don’t know. Had the creativity run dry? Is there a point where you’ve exhausted yourself? Art is a job. And for most of us it is not a successful or Ahsen Jillani well-paying one. The last few years, I have realized that a former editor and publisher, is originally from Islamabad, Pakistan, and now lives in most people around me creating pretty stuff are just like me: Mint Hill. “...to me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly, the Rocks: an Azorean Myth (Dir. Aylin Gökmen, 2020) in 14 minutes depicts lives of inhabitants of a Portuguese volcanic most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His island in the mid-Atlantic Azores and how they turn to faith command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. To my mind, that strange, wild to help them with grief and fear of eruption.

man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.” ~ Dr. Black (Bill Nighy) from ‘Vincent at the Doctor’, Dr. Who One thing that is for certain. Vincent van Gogh was a unique person who, while he did experiment with various genres and mediums of art, eventually developed his own style of texture and color that made his work so peculiar and yet so captivating. He was what we’d call today… a ‘Misfit Toy’. For those who are not aware of the term’s origin… it’s from the 1960’s Christmas Special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. In the story, the titular character and friends end up on this island and meet sentient toys who all have some odd quirk about them. Because of said quirks, these toys feel that no human child would ever want to play with them. At the end of the special, Santa Claus takes a detour to pick up the toys and take them all to loving homes. Within a broader spectrum, a Misfit Toy is a person who is often motivated by things that a typical person may discard or not think about. They care little about fitting in, looking for the ‘next best thing’, or dodging criticism because they prefer to remain honest to themselves. This no-nonsense attitude doesn’t mean that this person Misfit Toy doesn’t want to be appreciated. They’re still human beings with wants and needs just like everyone else. However, if this praise must be achieved by pretending to be someone else, then they’ll most likely seek out those who will accept them without question. Adversely, people such as these can also be described as… ‘complicated’. Often butting heads with a Misfit Toy can be like dealing with a brick wall. They tend to have a much more rebellious and stubborn mentality while intensively focused on surpassing the impossible dream. This type of attitude can be difficult to accept, but with a vast amount of patience you can find a true jewel amidst the rough edges. To me this broad yet revealing definition describes someone like Vincent to a tee. I’ve often labeled myself as one of these outlandish individuals due to my unusual quirks and interests, so in a way I’ve grown to feel a sort of kinship with this troubled yet remarkable Dutch artist who spent much of his life observing the world around him with an equal measure of despair and fascination. I’m glad that the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit is now able to bring his art to so many around the world who until now had only seen perhaps a small handful of his pieces. Perhaps the truest tragedy is that he died so young at only 37 years old. I have no doubt his art could have only continued to mature and grow and given us all so much more insight into his troubled yet beautiful mind. If you do have a chance… go see it whether it’s in Charlotte or some other city that the exhibit will be touring through in the coming months. While it may not be the most profound experience for some, I’m sure that after 35 minutes surrounded in lavish color and sound… you just realize that you have a bit of ‘Misfit Toy’ in you as well that’s been simmering inside of you… aching to finally be released.

Three Songs for Benazir (Dirs. Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei, 2021) is a 22-minute film set in Afghanistan. Shaista and his new wife Benazir are refugees in a camp in Kabul. Trying to make a name for himself and earn a living, the husband wishes to join the army, but his illiteracy and opposition of his family leads him to poppy harvesting, which in turn leads to addiction. A surveillance craft seeming to permanently float above the camp, the fear of imminent Taliban attack, parental vs. societal restrictions, and circumstances themselves all hem Benazir and Shaista into their camp. Atlanta-based photographer Logan L. Burroughs’ Spirit never dies, only transitions is a 10-minute, visual poem exploring the Black experience rooted in ritual. The detailed close-up cinematography, spoken poetry, and subtle jazz soundtrack is an invitation to reflect on the everydayexperienced life and inspired me to seek out more of her compelling imagery on her website, llburroughs.com. In the 18 ½ minute film A View from Above (Dir. Dylan Werkman, 2021), beautiful scenes of the earth from space as well as several earthbound settings are mesmerizing. The Eagles of the Desert (Águilas del Desierto) search monthly for missing migrants in the Arizona desert; the heartbreaking film Águilas (Dir. Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, 2021) documents their often-tragic discoveries of abandoned paraphernalia and, unfortunately, dead bodies. Perhaps even more depressing is the very short 5minuted animated The Chimney Swift (Dir. Frédéric Schuld, 2020) describing “climbing boys” ages 4-14 (yes, starting at age four!) who, during the Industrial Revolution, would be sent up chimneys to clean them. Many would have to be prodded ahead with needles to their feet or by a fire lit beneath them, and some fell to their deaths. As a father of a preteen, I found quite disturbing the story behind the 33minute The Doll (Dir. Elahe Esmaili, 2021). Single father of 14-year-old Asal seriously contemplates whether to allow her to marry as a teen. Unfortunately, many of these films only tour the festival circuit. However, some do have or are working on distribution plans. I encourage readers to consider attending Full Frame next year, presumably in-person in April 2022. Dadaji’s moral stories for kids THE SWAN AND THE CROW

A swan and a crow lived in a large tree. Once, a weary traveler approached the tree and decided to enjoy the shade. He placed his bow against the trunk and soon fell asleep underneath the tree. After a while the shade disappeared, exposing him to the harsh sun. The swan felt pity for this traveler and spread his wings to block the sun. The crow did not approve of such kindness for a human. He dropped his nest on the traveler’s head before fleeing. The man woke up and saw the swan in the tree. He thought the swan had dropped the nest and so grabbed his bow and pierced the swan with an arrow to vent his anger. The benevolent swan lost its life despite good intentions. Moral: Be wary of those who are wicked.

JULY 2021

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Be prepared for uncertainty this month. After a positive start, your situation will take a sudden downward turn as you begin to lose control. You may gain one last boost of good luck through a business associate. Be sure to involve your partner in major decisions. Curb your expenses as this is not the time to waste them on non-productive activities. An unexpected positive change for your kids may surprise you. This is the time to slow down.

You will feel helpless and miserable this month. Your life will be in a constant state of flux but offer almost no positive results. If you can maintain good mental health, you may be able to grab a rare opportunity. If you are expecting, take extra care of your health. Sadly, your aptitude will not be enough to boost your luck. You are far from weak, but the stars simply do not favor you at this time. Be patient and wait.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

After a positive start, you will experience a major downfall during the second half of the month. Don’t get involved in too many projects. This is a good time for travel, so don’t cancel your vacation plans. You should receive both good and bad feedback as far as your reputation is concerned. Issues at your place of work and problems with your child may disturb your peace of mind. Practicing meditation is recommended.

While some may feel fortunate, most will experience a series of setbacks. The best thing to do right now is to heed your mother’s advice. If you spy an opportunity to change careers, grab it immediately. If involved in a committed relationship, watch carefully as you may face credit issues due to your partner’s mistakes. The second half of the month will see a decline in your health.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

You will be inclined towards unproductive pursuits this month, which may turn you into an unnecessarily perturbed person. You may experience a major change within your family. Avoid business-related travel as there is a danger of losing money. Major ups and downs are possible at your place of work, so continue working hard and remain sincere. Don’t get involved in any new ventures.

After the first week of the month, you should see a positive change. An active social life and rise in income will delight you during the second half of the month. Don’t count on family to help you; forge ahead on your own to achieve success. A stubborn attitude could become your only hinderance. Just focus on your work and move quickly, then income will follow. You will enjoy good health.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Your situation will become more complicated after second week of the month. Your credit and reputation are both in danger. Friends and co-workers can offer great advice about important decisions. A lack of self-confidence may force you to compromise your morals, but you will be able to defeat your enemies. A difference of opinion with your partner may make things worse. This is not a good time to invest in real estate.

It is important to slow down and control your temper this month. Otherwise, you will enjoy a continually active and happy time. The first half of the month will keep you busy with social activities; enough to celebrate success during the last week. Try to avoid anxiety by being open-minded to make decisions. Sudden health problems during second half of the month may slow you down. A happy family life is clearly indicated.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Don’t miss an important opportunity at the start of the month. You will feel as if waking up from a bad dream as a back to normal mentality comforts you. You may accept assistance from your business associate, partner, or friend to enjoy this period. Avoid dishonesty to make money, as it may place you in a very bad situation in the near future. Also remember to curb your stubborn attitude.

After a negative start, things will shift to be a bit more positive this month. You may face competition with your associates. This is a good time to change your business strategies as new ideas will pop up. Implement these changes to gain financial benefits. Some minor health relief could be there. A strong family bond can assist in defeating common enemies. A rise in savings is possible.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Try to relax as this will be a very eventful month. You will be able to defeat your enemies, perhaps through immoral ways. Your friends and family will offer help, so be sure to accept it. Watch your health and drive carefully. A moderate increase in income is possible after second week of the month, but expenses will rise right along with it.

You will receive mixed results this month. Your health and choices will cause major issues. Worthless pursuits will steal your peace of mind. Try to move slow and wait for the right moment to take action as this will help in avoiding financial loss. Unfortunately, this choice won’t become apparent until the second half of the month. Try to reconcile it as soon as possible to achieve a sense of security.
