This Month and Then Onward The Churn of Democracy While we celebrate our anniversary, we should all celebrate and protect our fragile democracy. That word seems to have become an afterthought in many parts of the world. Even here in the USA, the globe’s most powerful democracy, tribalism and divisiveness loudly shout, yet our democratic processes churn along, saner voices keeping it in check. And they should. We all should. Some will crib and opine that we are not actually a democracy. Maybe. We are the idea of democracy in action, a constantly evolving platform of ideas and societal improvement; don’t let pessimists and loudmouths tell you otherwise. It seems the 2020 election just happened yesterday. The virus didn’t help matters, but America voted, in large numbers, and a fair election ensued. Some still doubt the election; well, let them doubt and simmer, burn out in their own misinformation fires. Self-delusion can only be undone with introspection stacked with facts and truth. Truth must be self-realized. Now, ready or not, here comes the 2022 election season with primaries kicking off around the country. The Carolinas and Georgia all hold primaries in May. The fight right now is internal, within political parties, to get the party’s nomination for whatever office one is contesting. The summer will swoop in fast and the election season will kick off in earnest just as soon as the primaries around the country finish. The first Tuesday in November awaits, holding in its arms the balance and the makeup of the Congress as well as myriad state legislatures and regional offices. As war rages in Ukraine, it is even more apparent that democracy needs to be defended, nurtured. Optimism is not actionable, but pessimism is a virus that must be checked via action. Let it churn, our idea of democracy must prevail.

The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla Milestones and Markers Humans love marking milestones. Birthdays, Independence Days, family traditions, anniversaries. We ride the daily breezes with the ups and downs of life, the unrelenting roadblocks strewn into our paths by nature, by others, sometimes by our own stumbles, and we trek on, into the slithering, sliding and slippery alleyways of life. We persevere. These challenges make us stronger, more alert, seasoned, to handle the unknowns headed our way tomorrow or the next day. It’s called experience, but also it is innate in our species, the wily ways of getting through the day, not just surviving but thriving and moving forward. The journey can also be filled with creative endeavors, building things, creating art, fixing things, inventing the future, the tomorrow. Art, music, literature, dance, films, sports, the stuff of humans. This month, the month of May, we mark another milestone. This is Saathee’s 24th anniversary issue. It’s the passion of creating a community resource that has driven us to continue this work, starting with a fourpage photocopied and folded newsletter back in 1998 to the magazine you hold today. We continue our work to gather and present accurate and useful information, original writings and puzzles, connecting communities while making memories and coaxing dreams. We hope you find Saathee a worthy member of the community, worth reading and sharing. Our journey continues with your support, family, friends, neighbors, the greater community. We are now working to expand into multimedia. We mark this month of milestone, take stock, gaze over the horizon, and then move onward.

Serendipity An Experience Like None Other Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen “There isn’t any questioning the fact that some people enter your life, at the exact point of need, want or desire. It’s sometimes a coincidence and most times fate, but whatever it is, I am certain it came to make me smile.” ~ Nikki Rowe I was once asked by an old friend what my favorite word was. I have several, but my top three are “wabisabi”, “indubitably”, and “serendipity”. Somewhat ironically these three words could work very well in the same thought process. The first is a Japanese phrase which refers to finding beauty within the confines of imperfection. The second, describing a choice or situation that is unquestionable or without doubt. The last speaks of an occurrence that seems unexpected or random and yet offers benefits to all involved. So as an example of combining these ideas… you could seemingly come across a complete stranger in a rundown diner that most would normally ignore, and the both of you find commonality in the fact that this easily passable gathering place has the best coffee in town. The mere joy of experiencing fortunate aimlessness is one of the reasons I enjoy road trips so much. An arbitrary sign beckoning you to a store or restaurant you hadn’t noticed before could end up being quite an extraordinary encounter. Besides the anticipatory hunt to find such a place along hidden back roads, there’s also the chance to find other pilgrims who likewise share your passion for adventure. I once took a 3-week summer trip across the US using a Greyhound “mass pass” and just hopped on a different bus at each checkpoint with the goal of seeing continued on page 94

The Epic Pandemic A Teenage Story

My Voice by Sereena Kumar Staying home for two whole years and suddenly coming out from hibernation has been a big change for me. Before the pandemic, I was a happy go lucky 13-year-old. I felt like I was getting settled into my middle school and felt comfortable. On March 13, 2020, my whole world froze. Thus began the pandemic and virtual school. Life went by in a zoomliterally. Here I am now, navigating the waters of my first year of high school. It is a big leap from virtual middle school. Socializing on a screen in online school was hard when everyone was muted, and when everyone’s cameras were off. Now, it is even harder. According to my friend, “The pandemic has affected how we interact with each other. It caused us to be isolated in our friend groups.” Suddenly being in front of people made me conscientious of my actions. There is no screen dividing me from my peers, and I don’t have the option to turn their camera off with a simple click of a mouse. The only thing that is concealing my social awkwardness, is my mask. My friend said that “I’ve been kinda socially awkward and taking off my mask makes me nervous.” Many high schoolers feel as if the mask conceals their flaws, as superheroes wear masks to conceal their identity. I have learned from the pandemic that we are not superheroes. We are not perfect, we make mistakes. We all want to escape our reality and pretend that we don’t have problems. I have noticed that my friends have stopped telling me about their troubles continued on page 74

Developing Countries Are Being Left Behind in the AI Race That’s a Problem for All of Us

By Joyjit Chatterjee and Nina Dethlefs Artificial Intelligence (AI) is much more than just a buzzword nowadays. It powers facial recognition in smartphones and computers, translation between foreign languages, systems which filter spam emails and identify toxic content on social media and can even detect cancerous tumors. These examples, along with countless other existing and emerging applications of AI, help make people’s daily lives easier, especially in the developed world. As of October 2021, 44 countries were reported to have their own national AI strategic plans, showing their willingness to forge ahead in the global AI race. These include emerging economies like China and India, which are leading the way in building national AI plans within the developing world. Oxford Insights, a consultancy firm that advises organizations and governments on matters relating to digital transformation, has ranked the preparedness of 160 countries across the world when it comes to using AI in public services. continued on page 58

Vitamin B-12 A Unique and Essential Vitamin

Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod

If you are eating a vegetarian or vegan diet, you may have heard that you may not get enough Vitamin B 12 and may need supplementation. What is Vitamin B 12? Vitamin B12 contains the mineral cobalt and exists in several forms. Compounds with vitamin B12 activity are called cobalamins. Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are two forms that are active in human metabolism. The other forms are hydroxocobalamin and cyanocobalamin that must be metabolized into the two active forms to be used in human cells. Sources of Vitamin B 12 The most important thing to remember is that Vitamin B12 is not made by plants or by animals, but by bacteria. B12 is made by anaerobic microorganisms (i.e., bacteria that do not require oxygen to live). Anaerobic bacteria are common in the gastrointestinal tract of animals. Many herbivorous mammals, including cattle and sheep, absorb B12 produced by bacteria in their own digestive system. B12 is found to some extent in soil and plants. When animals eat grass or other soil-based foods that may have bacteria, or larger animals may eat other smaller animals, certain types of bacteria enter their gut. Thus, animals make their own B 12 from these sources. When humans eat animals, they are getting the B 12 from these animals. Which is why nonvegetarians may get adequate B 12 from their diet, but vegetarians and especially vegans may not. continued on page 78

Aloha, Bania! Money Makes People Better Actors glass pretending to be a connoisseur. When I ordered it, I intentionally mispronounced it. I had a feeling she already knew our secret that we had gotten a free upgrade because of credit card miles, so I thought we might as well have fun with the stereotype. “Can I have a glass of champ-pain?” She very respectfully clarified, “Champagne? I’ll be happy to get it for you.” I have never been fond of United flight attendants because they remind me of the teachers my kids had in middle school in Boston. Strict, gloomy, with a touch of racism padded under a fake smile. But the ones in first class were different. They were relaxed, cheerful and more genuine. I guess money makes people better actors. We stayed with our friends who own a house there. We took them out for dinner a couple of times. While we toasted our friendship for the last 20 years, I silently expressed my gratitude for saving so much money in hotel charges. Our friends’ house was in a resort. It was like being in the movie Truman Show. It had manicured gardens, was close to pristine beaches and filled with very friendly people. One of my favorite spots for snorkeling is Hanauma Bay. We went there over twenty years ago, and it was an amazing experience seeing all the fish even in shallow water. However, it was disappointing this time because we could hardly see any fish in the water. When I mentioned this to my wife, one of the fellow sunbathers remarked, “I guess they disappeared because of the influx of republicans from the mainland!”

Raajeev’s Corner by Raajeev Aggerwhil My wife and I had a week’s vacation in Hawaii. She was happy spending time on the beach. I was just happy to get upgraded to first class tickets for free. A $330 round trip ticket from Los Angeles to Honolulu per person was a good deal. Getting an upgrade to first class for free was the deal of the century. Our promotion code was Covid19. Just kidding. I guess because of Covid and traveling in the new year after the holidays, there were a lot less passengers. While I was happy after getting upgraded to first class on United, my excitement quickly disappeared when I saw my fellow passengers. They all dressed like hippies, punks or yoga instructors. They should have a rule that you cannot get upgraded to first class if you do not follow a basic dress code. If every Tom, Dick and Raajeev can upgrade to first class, it is no longer first class. I guess there are too many free riders counting on frequent flyer miles, leading to Airline Mile Inflation. The first-class restroom was occupied, so when I went to the economy class restroom, I realized how much I missed traveling in economy when the plane is half full. I would lie down on three seats, feeling more comfortable and luxuriously frugal than in first class. Still first class was not bad, although it was more crowded than economy! We did enjoy free hot meals in first class. I ordered champagne. I don’t like the taste, but I do like holding the Saathee.com

Preparing for the MCAT College Admissions Insider by Violet Wei The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is one of the many hurdles aspiring pre-med students need to overcome before applying to medical school. The MCAT aims to assess whether pre-med students have the analytical skills to succeed in medical school. Split into four sections, it covers:

• Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living

commonly covered in the MCAT. You should also create a schedule for your study blocks, with specific things you plan to study. You want to have blocks that have attainable and specific goals.

Systems.

• Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems.

• Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Properly preparing for the MCAT can take months of effort, with the successful matriculant to med school earning a score of 511. Here is everything you need to know to get the score you need. 1. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses Before you begin a test prep course or study on your own, it’s a good idea to do a full-length practice test so you can see your baseline score. This will help you focus your time on covering subjects that are a bit weaker for you rather than starting with a comprehensive prep. 2. Give Yourself Time to Study Most students will spend more than 200 hours studying for the exam over several months. This is not an exam that can be crammed for in a short amount of time; give yourself time to take the test without stressing. Most medical schools won’t review your application until they have received your scores, so you want to ensure that you aren’t cutting it too close to when the applications open in late spring. However, you also don’t want to take it too early—wait until you have taken all your prerequisites before tackling the exam. 3. Be Strategic with Test Prep The MCAT covers such a wide variety of topics that it might seem overwhelming. Remember, though, that each subject is not equally tested, so you won’t be required to go into great detail for each topic that you are covering. Savvy test-takers will concentrate on seeing what is

Saathee.com

44

4. Simulate Test Day Conditions The MCAT is a marathon of a test: it lasts 7.5 hours with optional breaks between the four sections. Work on your mental stamina to handle such a long exam during your practice. The exam starts at 8 am, so make sure to do some practice exams in the early morning. Take advantage of test prep materials to study effectively. 5. Focus on Quality Rather than Quantity Doing as much prep as possible isn’t always the best technique. Instead, strategic test-takers should do practice tests, review explanations, and think about the content. The review process can be just as valuable as doing practice tests! 6. Have A Good Study Balance While you might be obsessed with preparing and studying for the MCAT, schedule downtime where you can mentally recover from the long exam! This recovery time can help you bounce back quicker from a tough study session. 7. Only Take the MCAT When You Are Ready It is never a good idea to sign up for an official MCAT without being 100 percent prepared. If your practice tests aren’t in your target score range, you probably aren’t ready to take the exam. Some schools will see all your MCAT scores, so it isn’t a good idea to take a test that won’t help you on your path to medical school. Violet Wei is a College Counselor and Outreach Coordinator. Awhirl in the Swirl of the Three Worlds

Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” - The Buddha There is often a deep yearning for an elusive sense of “peace”. We hear laments all around us about the lack of a feeling of “all is well”. Given that this sense of phantom pain is so common, maybe we are after something that is just not meant to be. We are strange creatures. Sometimes we yearn for things because other creatures like us assert that these are worth the chase. But sometimes our yearnings run deeper than those that arise in the copycat that we are, more often than we think. If we are not careful though, we may spend our lifetime being the annoyed dog chasing the mail van just because we can. Or, the goals of our pursuit may be organic in nature, but being unable to direct our energies in line with those goals, we end up pursuing shiny objects that are inorganic fabrications instead. In either case, we continue in the painful state of being “un-whole”, seeking constantly to become whole. No peace in that! Saathee.com

The Truth: Three worlds The cosmography of Hinduism is framed by the concept of ‘Triloka’: the three worlds. Sometimes, the ancients do give us interesting ideas, even if we use those in ways that were not quite what they intended. The truth is that there are indeed three worlds: earth, heaven and hell. And while our feet are planted firmly on earth, our heads are way up in the clouds, continually oscillating between heaven and hell: a state of mind that is a state of hell unto itself. This uncontrollable oscillation is what brings the lack of the peace that we pine for. Movement and peace are diametrically opposed. Movement is life, peace is death. If we long for ultimate peace, we can have it but once. Unless you subscribe to some other concepts too from Hinduism (or other religions) which call for you to be born over and over, with the adverse side effect of destroying peace. So “peace” may be a lost cause, if we say that living life means no peace. The whole Truth: One real world, two fakes But saying that there are three worlds and us is not the whole truth. One of these worlds is from something that is also our parent. The other two are our own creations: we create our own heavens and hells that is some mixture of the ground we stand on, and the creations we weave inside ourselves. continued on page 78

Enchanting Dances of Rajasthan

Then there is a dance of chivalry called Geendad. This is an exclusively male dance requiring years of experience as they carry swords or sticks and jump and exchange positions in a circle. These are real swords making it a dangerous dance form like the martial arts of Kerala. Same kind of precision is needed as they also do fire dances where they eat fire and jump through the fire rings. Yes! Like in the Renaissance festival. The other exclusively male dance is the Gair. It was originally performed only by men but has now developed into an inclusive dance form. However, usually men and women dance in separate circles. Men wear long, pleated tunics that open out into full-length skirts. Here when they are dancing it seems as if they are depicting a scene from war front. It is believed by the locals that this dance must have got some significance to war. This form of dance is also seen in Africa and Central Asia. The sticks used in the dance are called Khanda. These sticks are very attractive and catch every eye. The sticks play vital role in the dance. They are very thin and don’t carry much weight and give a flare look. These sticks are cut from the gundi tree and involve little cleaning

Dances of India by Dr. Maha Gingrich When we think of Rajasthan, we think of beautiful palaces shown in movies like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. We also see the elaborate royal clothing and jewelry. As a dancer when I think of Rajasthan, I think of the pirouettes, swirls, acrobatic movements, and incredible costumes with vibrant colors, the intricate folk jewelry, timeless and diverse dances. Rajasthani dances require not only grace, but also elegance, flexibility, acrobatic moves, and dynamic music filled with toe-tapping tempo. A few years ago, when we did the Ghoomar dance during Dances of India production, people were spellbound. Ghoomar, meaning going in circles, was originally restricted to be performed only by Rajput women (the royal families). Here the ladies dance with elegant hand movements wearing colorful lahangas or large skirts. As they go in circles the skirts flare beautifully giving you a spectacular dimension. The Indian movie Padmaavat has an amazing and spectacular representation of the Ghoomar dance. It is very rare to see such beautiful and pure dance styles in Bollywood. Saathee.com

Should We be Investing in Crypto at this Time?

out what the risk is or if it fits our value profile. And that seems to be the case with these digital currencies. Majority of the value in crypto coins is speculative. Some of you may recall the GO-GO days of mutual funds in 1960s and early 70s (and I will not even mention the Tulip Mania/Hype a few centuries ago). There was such hype and speculation about these mutual funds at that time that as a result, many people got hurt and lost money. Eventually, the mutual fund industry got regulated, well enough, by the Government agencies and now at least we have the tools to ask the right questions and decide on our own as to which mutual funds we should be investing in, should we decide to go that route for our investments. Compared to 13 years ago, the price of the coins has moved up considerably, but at the same time it has seen many ups and downs and we almost have to keep scratching our heads to figure out why that is happening. It is totally beyond anyone’s control right now and that is what makes it most speculative. Millennials are a group that are most likely to invest in such coins. Social media and crypto talk go hand in hand for them; Millennials spend a lot of time online and for them investing in bitcoin, doge FWIW, Eithereum and other coins is in vogue, according to a survey from NORC, a research arm of University of Chicago. Crypto investors tend to be young (38 average), more diverse than traditional stock investors and 61 percent started their crypto journey in the last 12 months. The big thing they have on their side is time; they can experiment, play with coin investments, perhaps lose some money and still come out ahead; a luxury many others don’t have. Before you invest any money into cryptocurrencies, should you decide to do it, establish basic objective of how much and how. Understand well that, more than many other investments you may have made, this one has the potential to lose your capital completely as it also has the ability to soar in value, at least for a short while. It is not a good idea currently to consider investing your IRAs or 401K money into this kind of investment (some retirement people are thinking about that). Keep the total value small so that even if you lose everything, let’s say hypothetically, it will not alter your life goals or style. No matter how you look at it, today it is a highly speculative investment and none of your life goals should be dependent on this investment succeeding. I would be looking forward to what the

Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans

During the month of March this year, President Biden issued an executive order to study digital currencies, a move the industry welcomed, and the skeptics decried as delaying needed regulation. The order titled “Ensuring Responsible Development of Digital Assets” directed agencies across the Federal Government to produce reports on digital currencies and consider new regulations. It even outlined the risks cryptocurrencies pose to the economy, national security, and the climate, while also noting their benefits. It also asked the agencies to do many other things pertaining to the cryptocurrency. That executive order spells out well the dilemma we all face and I am glad in a way that the Federal government is trying to get to the bottom of this and take a position. Many organizations like Tesla, government of El Salvador and Ukraine have already taken a position to move in that direction by accepting bitcoins as legal tender and I am sure there will be more as the time passes. Financial organizations are also taking positions in crypto currencies, albeit so slowly. It has been 13 years since an unknown software developer birthed crypto by mining the bitcoin genesis block. To be sure there is much calculation involved in this mining process and it consumes large amount of energy doing the calculations. This is one of the biggest concerns many have, namely its impact on climate control. There are about 80 different coins available today (Bitcoin is the largest). Some 40 million Americans have owned Crypto but to my knowledge nobody has used it to purchase anything (other than Tesla, perhaps) or make mortgage payment with it. So, what is the big attraction? We all get attracted to anything that is appreciating in value no matter what the risk is; on most occasions we have not bothered to find Saathee.com

Is Cinema a True Reflection or an Overexaggerated Take on Society?

My Voice by Krithika Velappan

As a society, we are constantly evolving. Today, our world is not how it was ten years ago and ten years from now, it will not be how it is today. But the one of the things that has created a constant impact on how society is shaped is cinema. Across all its languages, the Indian cinema industry has created a vast movie-lover public, who form fan clubs for their favorite heroes and heroines and spend their time and money to go see them on the big screens. But is society being shown through an unrealistic lens? When we hear the movie Pushpa, the first thing that comes to our minds is the Saami song. But in terms of the movie, it reeked violence and rowdyism in almost every scene. Movies like this engage in adulation of those scenes and the act of it- indirectly stating that it is “cool” to cause harm to others’ lives. Although filmmakers may defend that they are only giving off this message for the purpose of the movie, their movie is being played in thousands of screens to millions of people all around the world. The takeaway from movies like this happens to be that okay to be just like the hero (and rowdy) because he is glorified throughout the entire movie. This leads to many wrongful acts happening in our world today. Young children and adolescents, who think of Allu Arjun and heroes like him as an idol, tend to commit unethical acts that they may not have been so prone to doing if they didn’t see their hero doing it on screen. Also, it’s not just Allu Arjun or the Pushpa movie. All the popular actors across all the Indian languages have acted in at least one movie in their career in which they portray a character who is the leader for many crimes and wrongdoings: they’ve taken part in an entire movie full of violence. continued on page 94

650kg of carbon emissions during training (this is comparable to a trans-American distance flight). Training a more advanced model can lead to roughly five times the total carbon emissions generated by an average car during its entire lifetime. Developed countries have historically been the leading contributors to rising carbon emissions, but the burden of such emissions unfortunately lands most heavily on developing nations. The global south generally suffers disproportionate environmental crises, such as extreme weather, droughts, floods and pollution, in part because of its limited capacity to invest in climate action. Developing countries also benefit the least from the advances in AI and all the good it can bring – including building resilience against natural disasters.

AI

continued from page 36

The US ranks first in their 2021 Government AI Readiness Index, followed by Singapore and the UK. Notably, the lowest-scoring regions in this index include much of the developing world, such as subSaharan Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as some central and south Asian countries. The developed world has an inevitable edge in making rapid progress in the AI revolution. With greater economic capacity, these wealthier countries are naturally best positioned to make large investments in the research and development needed for creating modern AI models. AI Could Widen Digital Divide In contrast, developing countries often have more urgent priorities, such as education, sanitation, healthcare and feeding the population, which override any significant investment in digital transformation. In this climate, AI could widen the digital divide that already exists between developed and developing countries. AI is traditionally defined as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”. To solve problems and perform tasks, AI models generally look at past information and learn rules for making predictions based on unique patterns in the data. AI is a broad term, comprising two main areas – machine learning and deep learning. While machine learning tends to be suitable when learning from smaller, well-organized datasets, deep learning algorithms are more suited to complex, real-world problems – for example, predicting respiratory diseases using chest Xray images. Many modern AI-driven applications, from the Google translate feature to robot-assisted surgical procedures, leverage deep neural networks. These are a special type of deep learning model loosely based on the architecture of the human brain. Crucially, neural networks are data hungry, often requiring millions of examples to learn how to perform a new task well.

Using AI for Good The developed world is making technological progress, the developing world seems to be underrepresented in the AI revolution. And beyond inequitable growth, the developing world is likely bearing the brunt of the environmental consequences that modern AI models, mostly deployed in the developed world, create. But it’s not all bad news. According to a 2020 study, AI can help achieve 79% of the targets within the sustainable development goals. For example, AI could be used to measure and predict the presence of contamination in water supplies, thereby improving water quality monitoring processes. This in turn could increase access to clean water in developing countries.

Incremental Changes The benefits of AI in the global south could be vast – from improving sanitation, to helping with education, to providing better medical care. These incremental changes could have significant flow-on effects. For example, improved sanitation and health services in developing countries could help avert outbreaks of disease. But if we want to achieve the true value of “good AI”, equitable participation in the development and use of the technology is essential. This means the developed world needs to provide greater financial and technological support to the Large-scale Computing Infrastructure developing world in the AI revolution. This means they require a complex infrastructure of data storage and modern computing hardware, compared to simpler machine learning models. Such large-scale computing infrastructure is generally unaffordable for developing nations. Joyjit Chatterjee is a Data Scientist (KTP Associate), Beyond the hefty price tag, another issue that disproportionately affects developing countries is the University of Hull and Nina Dethlefs is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, University of Hull growing toll this kind of AI takes on the environment, which affects climate change. Paan Cupcakes

Saathee RECIPES

By Natasha Kucheria

Hi! I’m a home baker. My mother loves Indian desserts and I love to bake and together we devised some great recipes of Indian flavors prepared in a western style. Paan is a mouth freshening, after meal mini dessert that also helps with digestion. It’s a sweet, crushed rose petal truffle wrapped in a Betel leaf. The name Paan comes from the Sanskrit word “parna” which means leaf and has been an after-dinner treat in India for 5000 years! You are sure to enjoy this western spin on an ancient Indian sweet! It is a melt in your mouth, delicious, moist cupcake topped with a light, fluffy frosting, which is a perfect blend of the East meets West. I hope you enjoy it! Materials: 1 muffin tray, Baking spray, unsalted butter, or vegetable oil Blender, Stand Mixer/ Hand mixer, Cupcake liners, and Piping bag

Servigs: 12 cupcakes Prep Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 15 - 20 minutes

Ingredients

Directions

Cupcakes:

1 Preheat the oven to 300° Fahrenheit and put cupcake liners in the cupcake pan.

100 grams of unsalted butter at room temperature 200 grams of sugar 3 eggs 200 grams of all-purpose flour 120 ml of milk 5 grams of baking powder 2 tbsp water 3 Paan leaves

2 Beat the butter on high speed for about 5 mins until it becomes fluffy. Add sugar and eggs, one

Rose frosting: 2 Tbs Gulkand (found in Indian grocery stores) 1 Cup Heavy whipping cream 1 Tsp Pink food color Rose petals and edible silver foil to garnish

at a time and alternate the two.

3 In a separate bowl, sift together flour and baking powder. Set it aside for later. 4 In a blender, add water and the Paan leaves and blend until it becomes a green liquid. Make sure to run it through a strainer to remove any uncrushed leaves.

5 In the bowl with the butter, sugar and eggs, add ⅓ of the dry ingredients and mix. Then add ½

of the milk and ½ of the Paan liquid and mix. Add another ⅓ of the dry ingredients and the rest of the Paan liquid and milk and mix. Add the rest of the dry, and the food coloring and beat everything together, fill the batter into the cupcake liner about halfway full and bake for 15-20 mins. *Tip* To confirm that the cupcakes are baked completely insert a toothpick and check if it comes out clean. If it does, that means that the cupcakes are ready. Rose Frosting recipe Whip all the frosting ingredients in a bowl until stiff peaks are formed and fill into a piping bag. Pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes Garnish with rose petals and edible silver foil Enjoy!

process. In some places instead of sticks, swords are used, making it very difficult for the dancers and challenging them on precision. Rajasthan also is known for religious dance forms. We have many pictures of beautifully dressed snake charmers with turbans. The Kalbelia community or snake charmers of Rajasthan do a beautiful snake dance to the tunes of the Been instrument. During this dance, they worship the Snake God and imitate the snake with difficult back bends and hand movements. The Terah Taali dance is a ritual dance performed as an ode to Baba Ramdev with 13 cymbals called Manjeera tied to their bodies creating music with great speed making it look easy. To make it more complicated they also hold a sword between their teeth and place pots with lit lamps on their heads. How can you not be focused when you do a complicated dance such as this? That focus itself is a ritual and a trance, as I call it “A prayer in motion”. The Bhavia is a dance that was influenced by the neighboring state of Gujrat. This dance is incomprehensible as I watch with horror. The dancer balances nine brass pots on his or her head. Then they stand on a sharp sword or glass and continue their dancing with graceful hand movements and speed. The dance touches the hearts of all ages is the Kathputli (the Puppet) dance. Years ago, Bollywood movie Chori Chori with Nargis and Raj Kapoor brought attention to this dance form, then again it was shown in the recent film Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. These puppet shows tell the folk stories, stories from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata and other literatures. Due to the intricacies of making these puppets, these dances have not been spreading beyond its origin. These handmade puppets are very rare to come by. You may find small representations for decorations. I hope this beautiful dance form does not disappear. The energy and beauty of all the dances performed in Rajasthan is a divine gift. This state is truly embodied in its various dance forms its spirit and creativity. Art has always been an integral part of Rajasthani culture and its people. All over India and abroad the legacy of Rajasthani dance forms continues to flourish making them timeless.

when I can see that they are sleep deprived and unhappy. A lot of them have mentioned that they don’t bother to tell their parents what is on their minds. We have forgotten that we are important and allowed to speak our minds. Perhaps being away from people has made us more independent, or the transition from middle school to high school has made us think that we need to be independent. It’s every person for themself in the wild jungles of high school. That cannot last forever because we need people to support us. And every person needs to know that we are willing to support them; not abandon them in the jungle. If anything, the pandemic has taught me that I need to ask my friends how they are doing every minute. In a way, I feel more emotionally connected to my friends. We understand each other because the pandemic is something that we have all been through. We know what it’s like to feel at the bottom of a pit with no means of getting out. We are each other’s ladders, helping one another climb out of the dark times and into the sunlight. I hug my friends tighter every day because I now know what it felt like to lose them, and that I never want to lose them again. My friend said, “I never realized how much I depended on my peers, family, and teachers until the pandemic took them away from me.” The pandemic has also allowed me to figure out a little bit about myself. I have learned what things make me anxious and I am learning how to cope with them, along the way. I have discovered new talents; I learned how to play the ukulele, bake cookies, and draw realistic people. Boredom drove me to creativity and new interests. My classmates agreed with me and almost collectively said, “I’ve definitely gotten more time to focus on myself and my hobbies.” The pandemic has caused me to lose some of my social skills and the ability to freely express my opinions. My friends and I have difficulty voicing our troubles and instead have resorted to staying quiet to not be a burden to others. In a different light, we have learned to show that we truly care for our friends and not to take them for granted. Our foundation for trust is stronger because we know that our situation for the past two years has been somewhat similar. As well as exploring friendships, I have explored my capabilities and learned that I can do so much more than I imagined. I hope that every 9th grader in my shoes has found out from the pandemic that Read more Dances of India articles online on they are resilient, creative, and ready to face the jungle Saathee.com. There was no Starbucks near the house and the local coffee shop was crazy expensive. But when you split an $8 extra-large latte and $14 extra-large Acai bowl between two people, it does taste pretty good. Everything in Hawaii is more expensive because the shops jack up the prices due to the influx of tourists. However, based on my past experience, there is one place that has the same level of prices as the mainland. And that was Costco, the mecca for any Bania. The Costco where we did most of our shopping was special. Not only did it have far more variety of local items such as Hawaiian shirts, shorts and macadamia nuts, it overlooked pristine lush green mountains. Now that is what I call customer service. The trip back to LA felt like déjà vu. We got upgraded to first class again. What are the odds that we would get the deal of the century a second time in a week? I guess they saved our promotion code. While holding the glass of champagne in the company of my fellow republicans, I had the urge to check out the seating situation at the back of the plane. Then I thought, why not just live in the moment. I am sure I’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fullsize bed in economy in my future trips!

conclusions are of the Commission that President Biden has created. In my mind this new form of currency has to be controlled and regulated well so that we all play by the same rules and they are well known. Volatility makes crypto currency an extremely risky proposition. If you decide to go the Fintech route, Financial firm SoFi and broker Robinhood allow account holders to buy and sell various crypto currencies through their smartphone apps. The risk is that your crypto funds are not insured by FDIC or SIPC, meaning that, if the institution goes under, your funds are gone for good. Digital assets at any firm are not covered by any kind of insurance. So, is this investment for you? I would say you can invest what you are mentally prepared to lose; because where we are in this game that is always a possibility. You must know yourself first; many Financial Planners spend much time just helping you understand your own risk tolerance level.

MAY 2022

Aries (March 21 – April 20)

Libra (September 22 – October 20)

Control your activities during the first half of the month as there is risk of losing status. You may become compliant to your partner and enjoy peace of mind during the second half. Also, your health could be of major concern so remain careful during the last week. Risk taking must be curbed, so try to pass the month quietly.

Destiny may provide protection, but problems will still be there. Your income could go up, but unexpected expenses won’t let you save anything. Family quarrels may disturb your peace of mind. Act wisely to avoid long-term disruptions. Legal disputes must be avoided. Business-related travel is possible this month. Just stay on top of things and take it easy as blessings are with you.

Taurus (April 21 – May 20)

Scorpio (October 21 – November 20)

You will experience major confusion this month. Try to not make any business decisions. Instead, focus on learning as it will be a great help in the near future. A dispute with your partner could occur. Religious activities or reading may prove fruitful. Avoid any sort of wrongdoing, as it could build stress. Most importantly, follow traditions in order to protect you from unexpected problems or legal disputes.

New opportunities are on the way; it is time to accept and adopt these changes. Don’t become your own worst enemy. Financial gain will delight you this month. However, you may be forced to push in a new direction during the last week. An excessive workload may tire you and lead to mishap, so be careful. The month can be described in one word: Compromise.

Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21)

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

You are due for a promotion at your place of work, but a stubborn attitude may cost you this opportunity. Sincerity towards your duties is very important for progress this month. You may not enjoy financial benefits immediately but accept additional responsibilities for long term gain. Arguments with your partner are also possible during the first half of the month. Religious and traditional activities may bring happiness.

Your life should fly by this month. You may face major changes and quick decisions but wait until the second half of the month to make a move. Your associates and friends may prove to be great support. This isn’t a good time for students as they may not be able to focus on studies. Real estate related expenses may break your budget. Deal with it wisely to avoid any possible consequences.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 21)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You could make a very important social decision this month, which in turn should provide financial stability including a rise in savings. You may also think to start a new business venture, so be sure to act as soon as possible. Don’t waste time and remain focused else the business may end up in disaster. You may also learn about some kind of para-psychic secrets.

Things are changing at an accelerated pace. Clarity of mind will make you feel good. Don’t count on family members. Time is good for long distance journey. The time is good to focus on learning about old traditions and beliefs. It may help you to protect many things in future. Minor financial setback is also possible this month. Your partner may hurt your feelings in the second half of the month. It is time to be patient.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Aquarius (January 22 – February 18)

Luck may not favor you at the beginning of the month, but a major life change during middle could brighten things up. You may start spending money now and make mature decisions. Avoid changing your career or investing in land. Don’t rely on any support, even from your closest friend or partner.

Your family and partner could prove to be very good support this month. You will need this help as an excessive workload and lack of confidence may lead to mistakes. Your competitors may make a combined effort to damage you. Financial responsibilities may build additional stress. Watch your health as well. Teamwork is necessary this month.

Virgo (August 23 – September 21)

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

You may start paying for past mistakes. Listen to your partner before making any important decisions. Friends may turn their backs on you. A heavy workload may make things extremely hectic. Watch your health and drive carefully this month. Analyze your situation before making any job or businessrelated move. A long-distance journey may prove to be successful.

Destiny will still favor you this month, but complications will also be present. Your health may not fully cooperate, and your workload should be very heavy as well. This is a favorable time to start a new venture with the support of friends and family. Long distance journeys must be avoided for now. Avoid signing any legal documents this month. If you remain careful and are supported by loved ones, you should enjoy simple and easy life.

new parts of the country I hadn’t previously explored. I came across some of the most marvelous sights and fellow passengers along this singular voyage… and it was, to date, one of the best summer trips of my life. To me, the ideal serendipitous circumstance has a few key components: spontaneity, purposelessness, and a certain euphoric ambiance shared amongst all parties involved. Often there’s no reason to expect everyone to share a common ground and yet somehow have a perfect, no-stakes interaction within this mutual environment. This sense of fortuitous wonder, for me, has extended into the virtual world in the past few years as I take at least one night a week to start a particular video and then let the YouTube sidebar recommendations navigate me through an obscure algorithm of content that I normally wouldn’t come across. The trust placed in something so analytical has offered me access to so many exceptional creators out there that deserve much more recognition. Most important of all, I have come to realize that many of the personal relationships I’ve come to share over the years have come to fruition, at least in part, due to a spark of luck and simply being in the right place at the right time. Some have lasted… others have not. That’s just how it all works. I don’t regret a single one of them, as each interaction has helped to mold me into the person I am now. Sadly, in the wake of isolating ourselves and some recent economic factors have made the mere desire to let fate guide our way less than ideal. People frequently spending more leisure time in solitude with their personal screens certainly doesn’t help either. With so many options available for on-demand streaming and social media, we’ve hit a substantial paradigm shift in terms of communication. As previously mentioned, I have (at least somewhat) become part of this particular collective. And yet… I still yearn for simpler times when my family would hop in the car and take off on the long ride to visit the relatives. We’d sing along to lyrics blasting through the muffled radio with the signal barely holding on. We’d play endless games of ‘I spy with my little eye’ with various landmarks that brushed past us. And we’d occasionally let serendipity take hold and direct our journey toward a place that is so indubitably wabi-sabi with some of the best homemade food, gifts or people you couldn’t find anywhere else. And on such a glorious afternoon, we enjoyed such moments without judgement. Perhaps someday Serendipity will once again swoop in and lead us on the right path. If only it happened more often…

However, the movie Shershaah was one in recent times that beautifully reflected true society. Although it was based on the true war hero and his journey leading his team to victory, many of the characters and emotions that were portrayed in the film could be resonated with on a larger level, meaning they could be applied to all aspects of life. Some of the film’s highlight scenes like falling in love, a strong family bond, the taste of success, and losing a loved one, were all shown in a light that perfectly balanced a realistic and cinematic point of view. Obviously, cinema will dramatize life. If it didn’t, every movie’s screenplay would be exactly what happens in your own homes. What’s the fun in that? All the cinema industries produce films to provide the audience with “an escape from reality.” The couple of hours that you sit and watch a film might be only time in the twenty-four hours of the day that you don’t think about what needs to be done or what’s on your to-do list. But there is a fine line between dramatizing and overexaggerating, a line that not every filmmaker knows how to utilize. The genre of the movie and how well it depicts society are not related to one another. Just because a movie is action-oriented, it doesn’t mean that it automatically is an unrealistic depiction. There are many action films that have done an honest rendering of society, films like Dangal, Vikram Vedha, and Bahubali. On the contrary, films like Arjun Reddy and Sooryavanshi may have been classified as “box office hits” but didn’t score too high in film reviews on its accuracy of life. Films that are overdone can’t be blamed entirely on the filmmakers. But there is some responsibility that they hold on to their side to ensure their movie displays the world around them accurately. Movies should both represent society in its truest form and have morally good characters. The main hero can be of a negative shade, but it needs to be made clear that it is not acceptable or “macho” to not abide by any laws or regulations and engage in criminal activities. Similarly, we, as the movie-goer audience, also hold our own level of responsibility. Just because something is shown on screen, it doesn’t mean that we need to blindly follow that. It is the same as a popular saying, “so if your friend jumps off a cliff, will you do the same”; we need to think about what we feel is ethically correct as per our standards. If we can focus less on the desire to “live” inside the movie we’re watching, we can divert our focus more on just simply enjoying our favorite film celebrities who will be entertaining us for the rest of time- while peacefully going about the rest of our lives.
