Cracks in the Sidewalk Infrastructures and Innerstructures
The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla It was drizzling while I walked to my car, subconsciously matching the rhythmic dance and trance of a soft rainfall. I kept my head down so the water from the rain wouldn’t wet my face. But then I gazed up at the playful gray clouds releasing their collectively held moisture to the ground. I stood there for a moment. The drizzle felt cool on my face during this warm summer day. I didn’t worry about my head or face getting wet anymore and walked tall, head held up high, hair getting wet, drops of water sliding down my face. While I was strolling, a crack in the pavement made me trip. It was a spot where the sidewalk was broken and jutted up due to the roots of a nearby tree reclaiming the land underneath. I tumbled forward a couple of steps but regained my balance and walked on without falling. I cursed under my breath and looked back at the rather large crack. I could swear a slithering critter just skittered away, laughing as if it enjoyed my tumble. Maybe it was one of those long creepy crawlies with a hundred legs, glistening a bit from the moisture. Or maybe it was just my imagination thinking that the crack itself moved a bit, slithered, and then giggled at my expense. I smiled because if I had kept my face down, staring at the ground to evade the drizzling rain, I would have seen the crack, the broken sidewalk, and stepped over it. The stumble on the sidewalk made me more alert, at least for a short while. It also got me thinking about this country’s crumbling infrastructure. There is much talk of infrastructure upgrading, rebuilding or innovating that’s needed in the United States. Vast amounts of money are about to be delegated to the fixer uppers needed for our physical infrastructure. These cracks, this disjointedness, this disrepair, also reflect larger divisions in our current social and political ethos. The tribes living on either side of the cracks, punching the air and spewing poison about the other, those on the other side of the crack. continued on page 94

Community Events Bijayini Satpathy World Premiere: ABHIPSAA - a seeking: Durham, NC (December 10-11, 2021) “For four decades,” Odissi dance master Bijayini Satpathy writes, “the Odissi I have known and owned has been someone else’s song, someone else’s making, someone else’s idea, someone else’s feelings and emotions.” Hailed by The New Yorker as “a performer of exquisite grace and technique,” Satpathy spent 25 years as Principal Dancer with India’s famed Nrityagram Dance Ensemble before striking out on her own to create this singular solo work that radically integrates Odissi’s pasts and proposes its possible futures. On December 10 & 11, 2021, Durham audiences will be the first to see the result: ABHIPSAA — a seeking, co-commissioned by Duke Performances and New York’s Baryshnikov Arts Center. Satpathy explores her solo voice, advancing the vocabulary of Indian classical dance; ABHIPSAA — a seeking pairs Satpathy’s mesmerizing and rigorous choreography with a new musical score. Tickets and other information can be found at Dukeperformances.duke.edu, at the events section.

Climate Crisis What Can Trees Really Do For Us? By Rob MacKenzie and Rose Pritchard By the power of sunlight, forests turn huge amounts of carbon in the air into food: sugars for themselves and leaves, bark and roots that feed animals and microbes. Respiration, which happens in the cells of all living things in the forest, releases energy from that food and carbon dioxide (CO₂) back into the air. As the amount of carbon in the atmosphere rises, this eatand-be-eaten cycle increases to keep up. Metabolically, trees are running just to stand still. In the course of all this cycling, forests are locking up the major part of the 33% of humancaused emissions removed from the atmosphere into the land each year. I work in a forest full of beautiful 175-year-old oaks. Global CO₂ levels were around 280 parts per million (ppm) when these trees were seedlings. Now global atmospheric concentrations exceed 415ppm and are rising rapidly. Should these oaks reach 200 years old (not old for an oak), they will be surrounded by air containing around 550ppm of CO₂. Can the world’s mature forests stand these changing conditions and continue to offset some of our emissions from burning fossil fuels? Carbon current accounts To find out, my colleagues and I at the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Forest Research use a free-air CO₂ enrichment facility. Imagine a dinosaur-free Jurassic park with 102, 25 meter-tall towers treating forest patches with CO₂enriched air that replicates the mid-century atmosphere: 565ppm – 150ppm above present levels. Then we measure everything we can: the width of tree stems, the size, weight, and chemical make-up of leaves, the branching architecture of the roots and much, much more. In this way, we record changes in the forest’s manufacturing of stuff, and in its health. Our first results are in. In the canopy, photosynthesis rates are up to a third higher on sunny summer days in the CO₂-rich patches. Over a growing season, the increase is about a fifth. These are big numbers: imagine if your annual income went up by a fifth. Photosynthesis is the forest’s carbon income. Since we began this experiment in 2017, the forest patches exposed to higher CO₂ appear healthy and productive. That may seem unsurprising. After all, plants love CO₂ so much that farmers add it to greenhouses to supercharge fruit and veg growth. But forests are not nurtured. They have to fend for themselves, winning (with their fungal partners) all the nutrients they need to balance any CO₂ bonanza from the earth on which they stand. Extra CO₂ photosynthesised into sugar can be too much of a good thing, like an imbalance in our diet.

Think of forests as carbon current accounts, bringing carbon in through photosynthesis and spending it on all the energy-giving respiration that keeps everything in the forest alive. In a healthy and productive forest, a little more comes in than goes out of the current account at the end of year. Forest carbon current accounts can hold carbon for decades, occasionally centuries, in their standing timber and roots and soil, tiding us over the 21stcentury peak in atmospheric CO₂ – a carbon cashflow crisis caused by burning fossil fuels and deforestation. Well-managed forests can yield timber and fuel while reducing carbon in the atmosphere. But carbon savings accounts, which put the stuff away for millennia – by pumping it into reservoirs deep underground, for example – are also needed. People and trees Scientific models have estimated how much tree planting or reforestation is needed to offset rising CO₂ in the atmosphere. As with most efforts to translate theory into action, the real-world experiences of actually doing this are often very messy indeed. How reforestation campaigns are funded and tree planting incentivized will determine where and which kinds of trees are planted. How the land is ultimately governed will also decide how long new trees survive. International efforts to grow the planet’s tree cover show how difficult these barriers can be to overcome. A recent study in northern India found that decades of expensive tree planting programs had not increased total canopy cover. And the planted areas did not offer any major benefit to local people, like new food or firewood. This was because new trees couldn’t be planted on nearby farmland, and so were instead added to areas that already had some tree cover, reducing the potential carbon savings of the whole endeavor. Local foresters were also preoccupied with meeting tree planting targets, rather than nurturing the kinds of forests and trees which local people valued. Effective tree planting is usually a matter of quality, not quantity. Land is never just about carbon. Trees and forests shape microclimates and water cycles, support biodiversity and provide food, building continued on page 78

The Power of the Dog
India Sweets and Spices The trials and tribulations of contemporary Desi lives are explored in a witty and dramatic flair by director Geeta Malik in her new film India Sweets and Spices. Sophia Ali portrays Alia Kapur, the headstrong and independent college kid who returns to her upscale family home in New Jersey for the summer. She meets the son of new owners of the local Indian grocery store near her home and invites him and his family to her parents’ dinner party and the carefully managed demeanor of her parents begins to unravel as she discovers some familial secrets. Veteran Indian actress Manisha Koirala portrays Alia’s mother while Adil Hussain portrays her dad. The rest of the cast is mostly solid. Sophia Ali wraps into her character naturally, maturing during the film, weaving together her independent streak and self-discovery while navigating her ethnic heritage. She grapples with her parents’ past and her own life as the summer wanes and she heads back to college. Malik, who also wrote the story, stitches the stereotypes of gossiping, meddling well-to-do aunties with the navigational maneuvers of heritage and identity of the next generation youngsters of Indian American families living in suburbia. The film opens in theaters on November 19.
Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the protagonist along with the cast that includes Kirsten Dunst and Keith Carradine. The movie, directed by Jane Campion, will be released on November 17.
Bunty Aur Babli 2 Bunty and Babli are forced out of retirement after a spate of robberies with their trademark sigil start appearing across India. This sequel to the popular hit film from 2005. In the sequel, directed by Varun V Sharma, the cast includes Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Sharvari Wagh. The movie opens around the world on November 19.

Feel the Magic of the Crowd
Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen
“There is no such thing as an ‘independent artist’. All artists are essentially co-dependent of the audience.” ~ Natasha Tsakos A friend of mine recently commented about his absolute joy to “…feel the magic of being with a crowd. There is nothing like it. Particularly after so long without it.” He was finally able to experience a piano concerto performance with orchestral accompaniment and reveled in something as simple as a standing ovation from the audience at the very end. His observation offered me a bit of pause… since we’re still technically in the midst of a pandemic. Depending on where you are in the world, there may still be limits in place that prohibit certain public events. I completely understand why these measures are there, but by the same token we as human beings require communal interaction in order to survive… both physically and mentally. In this age with its grand technology to connect us all around the world in an instant, at least we haven’t become completely isolated from one another. Live communication through the internet, especially on mobile devices, has been essential in maintaining sanity (at least somewhat) during these trying times. Something as simple as seeing a genuine
smile or hearing someone’s laughter can mean so much more than people think. Personally, I tend to go through spurts where I prefer solitude some days and to be sociable on others. In that way I am able to maintain a sense of psychological balance so that I’m not severely overloaded by either a loss of stimuli or too much of it. How or when each mode will strike me entirely depends on various other circumstances that I may be coping with at the time. In the past few months, I’ve been attempting as much as possible to gravitate back to a more normal state of socialness. Well… at least as far as my personal hobbies are concerned. After visiting two pop-culture conventions, a stage musical, a digital art exhibit, two Renaissance fairs, and four movies at the theatre, I can safely admit that being out and about is certainly not a problem for me. Ironically, my same friend mentioned above has teased me about my eagerness to do all these things in such a short amount of time. What can I say? I adore culture in all its forms and may be a tad greedy to explore and experience it all. On top of that, I’ll always relish in the willingness to discover new things and share that knowledge along the way. continued on page 80

Moral Absolutism Divided We Stand - or Die Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani
As of this writing, 11 people I knew are dead of Covid. Five were fully vaccinated. Some were in their 40s and had no health issues. The last few weeks, I’ve been angry, and have argued with people on both sides of the issue. Ultimately, both sides hung up on me. That’s where we stand, while the rest of the planet is begging for vaccines and vaccine developers are protecting their patents and missing production deadlines (remember the AIDS days and the same scenario?). I spent the last several years criticizing the far right for their rigid and radical behavior. But my job entails a lot of political copywriting and I have to force myself to listen to talk shows and podcasts on both sides. Frankly, all of them make me sick to my stomach. The political machinery in this country is so massive and influential now that their battlefield is international. Their agendas can extend into the trillions of dollars. Their influence can make or break entire nations. As a person doing marketing for political clients, I have learned over two decades that the amount of corporate power in politics is virtually unlimited. The landmark 2010 Saathee.com
Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. FEC gave corporate entities the power to pump unlimited amounts of money into political campaigns using nonsense SuperPACs and other means. The result has been that you can’t even trust your own brother in the political arena. Somebody has probably set up a PAC called Help My Brother PAC and given him $10,000,000 to introduce a bill in congress to build a sewage treatment plant and a coal mining operation next to your grandmother’s nursing home. I developed a natural bias over the last few years toward the right wing. There was open and blatant prejudice toward people of color; there was embarrassingly rude behavior toward international allies; there were weird and insane tweets about anyone who dared cross the mighty leader. But today, I am more relaxed and objective listening to the talking heads on both sides. They tend to report their own brand of garbage propaganda nightly, with facts that change shape from one hour to another on the same channel. One side is standing on streets carrying “My Body-My Choice” signs demanding free access to abortion. Another side is standing on another street with the same signs arguing about the government not forcing vaccines and masks on them. I have argued with folks on both sides. It is not an easy argument. American individualism and concepts of liberty do not require allegiance to the government or even your neighbor. That is a right you enjoy. On the other hand, Supreme Court precedent dating continued on page 80

Ratha Yatra Festival in Puri
Community That Dances Together Stays Together the creation of people’s imagination and desire to bring communities together through music, dance and celebrations. People of all ages, girls and boys, men and women, young and old come together to celebrate seasons, weddings, festivals, just to mention a few. They have a sense of freedom, with regional affinities and differences embodying within each material outward manifestation, a warmth of expression, and a charm and beauty that are very refreshing by their untutored and untrained quality. Folk and community dances do not display an inclination towards a rigid form, instead the whole depiction of folk and community art is guided more by the subject of the songs that glorify nature and its seasons, or express traditional occupations or in praise of deities. In folk and community dances, we follow mostly traditions. The songs, dances and the moves have been handed down for generations. I specifically remember the songs my mom would sing during the Bathukamma festival. This survival of oral tradition was unsupported by the written word, and was stabilized because of its tremendous sociological impact and basis. Through these arts, and customs, many traditions
Dances of India by Dr. Maha Gingrich As we continue to celebrate so many festivals during this season, it makes sense to see why we have not only prayer rituals but also specific dances associated with these festivals. This way family, friends and local communities can gather to enjoy the company of old friends and make new friends. I remember meeting so many wonderful people when I attended Dasara, or Diwali, or Baisakhi festivals. It is obvious that folk and community dances always have a marvelous way of lifting our spirits with their rhythms, and brilliant costumes. These dances are usually performed in groups to highlight the social nature of such dance forms. There are many differences between classical, folk and community dance styles. Classical dances tend to be subject to a defined order, pre-set form, specific hand gestures, and explicit footwork. Most of these dances have to follow the rules and regulations established by the Natya Shastra tradition. On the other hand, folk or community dances are very spontaneous, high energy, and allow much more flexibility in choreography or just do it as a free form. They are also Saathee.com

Sense and Nonsense Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad
“Sometimes the questions are complicated, and the answers are simple.” - Dr. Seuss The most important thing in making a decision is the decider: You! Seeing yourself as central in the decision making will literally shift the world, if you were not looking at things in this manner. It seems almost trivial, even superfluous, to make this assertion that creating a world that is inclusive of your “you” is a thing that is new. But a little reflection may light up the revelation that you may indeed be leaving out the king (or the queen) from the kingdom. See the “You” in the Universe Clearly, a decision is something we find ourselves needing to make because we are in a position where we believe that what we do – or don’t do – will influence the way in which the world will turn. If we let the world do its own thing, then we will just be a tiny clump of cosmic dust that gets carried along by the howling winds that scream through the vast emptiness of the galaxies. Of course, at some level, we are just a little smidgen of cosmic dust; it is nice to be at this philosophical level when we are privileged enough to be able to afford such a luxury, but not when a tiger is on the loose in the neighborhood, and some pressing decisions need to be made. There are many tigers, crocodiles and other fierce creatures in this world. We will face many of them over our lifetime. Some of these will be real, and will require us to draw on all our resources. But some of them will roam only the vast savannahs of our minds. The challenge, brave warrior, is to know the one from the other: the demons from within, versus the ones that devour you with hungry eyes from the outside, as they lick their chops, awaiting a more satisfying kind of devouring. Alas, the mind is a frail and fallible entity. It often fails to draw bright lines between wispy, shadowy creatures and the ones that really have teeth. On top of this, it is the same mind that spins out mirages at the rate of several a minute that needs to do double-duty to deal with all these creatures, some of which are existential threats while some are just fluffed-up kittens from some parallel universe. continued on page 74

Whole Grains Replacing refined grains with whole grains can significantally improve cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammatory markers
Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod
Grains have been the staple in diets all over the world. Climate, accessibility, trade, and culture are just some of the geographic factors that influence which grains are eaten in which regions.
• Wheat is the most common grain consumed around the world. China, Russia, and India are biggest producers of wheat. Varieties of wheat such as bulgur and couscous are commonly used in the Middle East. Wheat is also a staple in Italy and the Mediterranean countries. • Rice is the staple in the southern part of India. Rice is also a staple in majority of the Southeast Asian countries. Did you know that there are over 40,000 varieties of rice on the planet! Chinese Black Rice or Forbidden Rice and Bhutanese Red Rice are two of the unique varieties. • Maize or corn is used in North America, South America, and Africa. • Teff is an ancient grain that is used in Ethiopia and other East African countries. • In northern Europe, especially in countries such as Norway, Finland, Germany, and Ireland, the grain of choice is Rye. continued on page 56

Say no to refined grains Replacing refined grains with whole grains can significantly improve cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammatory markers. Research shows that higher intake of whole grains is associated with improved outcomes for mortality, coronary heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Unfortunately, instead of enjoying such a treasure, we have been eating overprocessed flours that are stripped of fiber and important nutrients. Most people do not eat the intact whole grains. We end up eating a lot of refined flour. When we consume overly processed grains, we end up consuming simple starches that turn into sugar in the body. Thus, we increase risk of diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, and obesity.
Nutrition
continued from page 54
• Spelt is a hardy grain eaten in Central Europe and northern Spain. • Grown in South America since probably 4000 BC or earlier, and the favorite grain of the Aztecs, is the nutritious grain Amaranth! Amaranth, aka Rajgira, is also eaten in India usually during festivals and fasts when regular grains like wheat and rice are not allowed. • Two grains that are consumed in the Mediterranean countries are Farro and Freekeh. • Traditionally consumed in India since ancient times, Millets are a nutritional powerhouse. There are several varieties of millets used in different parts of India. Millets are also a staple in China, and African countries including Ethiopia and Nigeria. • Sorghum (Jowar) is the fifth most consumed grain worldwide! • An Ethiopian ancient grain, Teff is said to be the tiniest grain on earth; it is 150 times smaller than a single wheat kernel. • Kamut or Khorasan is another ancient grain believed to have originated in Mesopotamia, and is eaten in Turkey • Fonio, a grain from the Millet family, is thought to be the oldest grain in West Africa. • A common Chinese grain is Job’s Ears or Chinese Pearl Barley. It is also used and eaten in East Asian countries like China, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. • An ancient grain, Buckwheat was first cultivated in the Balkan region of Europe about 4,000 B.C and was one of the first crops grown by the early American settlers. • Most of the world’s Barley is produced in Russia, followed by Germany, France and Ukraine. Barley is eaten in North America and European countries as well. • Oats are eaten in Russia, Canada, North America, and Europe. • Quinoa is a grain found in South America and in particular the Andes region which includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador and Peru.
Tips to include whole grains
• Limit foods made with flour (atta); especially things with refined flour, enriched flour, all-purpose flour/maida.
• Eat cooked intact whole grains most often. • Start with a better breakfast - – for example eat oatmeal made with steel cut oats or upma made from quinoa. • Use whole grain or sprouted grain bread instead of instead of eating white bread. • Choose whole grain or multigrain pasta or noodles made from whole grains. • Modify recipes to use whole grains – for example make idli/dosa or khichdi with brown rice or other whole grains instead of white rice. • Limit crackers, cookies, parathas, Rusk, Khari, khakhra, and other baked goods that are usually made with maida or processed atta. • The whole grain label on food packaging can be highly misleading. Don’t get misled by claims on the front of the packaging. Focus on reading ingredients.
As you can see there are several wonderful nutritious whole grains to try! All whole grain kernels contain three parts: the bran, germ, and endosperm. Each part has health-promoting nutrients. The bran is the fiber-rich outer layer that supplies B vitamins, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium, antioxidants, and phytochemicals. The germ is the core of the seed; it is rich in healthy fats, vitamin E, B vitamins, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. The endosperm is the interior layer that has carbohydrates, Parul Kharod protein, and small amounts of some B vitamins and is a registered dietitian and licensed nutritionist and works as a Clinical Dietitian. 12 Worst Habits for Your Financial Health
taxable saving enough? Simple answer is in most cases it is not; we must save more to support a comfortable lifestyle or whatever other goals we may have decided upon. This goes hand in hand with item no 1 because once we have a plan it necessitates the need for further action (like saving more) and all such other requisites become clear.
Part 1
3. Control your expenses: This can be treated as a corollary to the point above of saving more; they do go hand in hand because unless we control our expenses, we will not be able to save. On many occasions I ask my clients to make a list of their monthly expenses, all of the expenses they can think of; just keep a list of your expenses for at least six months. They get surprised when they see what they are spending on; not only that, they see also how unnecessary some of those expenses are. Sometimes we get carried away competing with our neighbors, friends, relatives or colleagues but the key questions to ask: Is that particular expense necessary? Not suggesting that on some special occasion money should not be spent but there must be a rationale behind it as to why we are doing it. This is definitely a key factor and much conversation needs to happen here.
Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans
We all aspire to do well, to take care of our family, get our children the best education, keep them healthy and give them all the tools and incentives for the most healthy and wealthy life. There is nothing wrong with that at all. But when I start probing a bit more about “how to reach those goals” then the puzzlement and head scratching begins. And that is because we have some vague idea, not quite crystalized, and we also don’t act on it. Having talked to so many clients, young and old, I have put together the following 12 bad habits (presented in two parts) that everyone must avoid, and these will also be useful in getting your financial life in order.
4. Not fully investing in non-taxable retirement plans like 401k or 503B and IRAs: Almost 70 percent companies don’t have pension plans any longer; instead, they have switched to 401K plans and in doing so they have made their life a lot simpler. But that is beside the point right now. If a 401K plan is offered, then all of us should be fully invested in that to the fullest level possible by the Law. An employee under the age of 50 can invest $19,500 per year in that plan; $26,000 for 50+ group. The corporation will match, up to a limit, every dollar you invest. It is easy money for you to take advantage of and everyone should be doing it. It is equivalent to committing a serious crime if you cannot grab that match offer by your corporation. The same thing goes for the IRAs that you and your spouse can invest in; there is an income limit on the IRA investments.
1. Not having a plan for life: No matter what age you are, it is necessary to have a plan; perhaps not on paper yet but it should be vivid in your mind which means you must have thought about it seriously. To have a plan, you must have a goal to get to. It can be as general or as specific as supporting children’s education, retirement goals or starting a business or owning a house or even dedicating yourself to a humanitarian cause. One has to have a goal that you know you are going to accomplish one specific day and then a plan as to how we are going to get there. It is very common to have more goals. It does not matter what age you are either - young or looking forward to retirement. Many young people think that it is not necessary to think about one’s retirement (as a goal) until you get close to retirement but that is like being on a boat cruise without a rudder or driving your car with a muddy windshield.
5. Planning for children’s education before your retirement: I get a puzzled look when I say something seemingly silly like this. I am not suggesting at all that children’s education should not be planned for, but I am suggesting that plan for your own retirement before you start saving for your children’s education. From parents’ point of view this is an emotional issue and they get mad
2. Not saving every month: No matter what, strive to save some money every month unless the circumstances are absolutely out of hand. This is a matter of habit and creating discipline for ourselves. But getting into a habit becomes easy once it becomes a rigorous discipline. I am not talking about the regular 401K and IRA savings or your emergency fund; I am thinking of something on top of that. Why should we do that is the obvious question. Isn’t the nonSaathee.com

News Notes Cary Diwali Photos: courtesy HumSub
The year 2021 dawned with hopes of seeing the end of the pandemic for most of the world. The Hum Sub executive team, too, was left wondering, “will we”, “wont we?” Was a 2021 Cary Diwali going to happen? Through the months leading into the summer, it was an open question. The team kept its options open, working on a Plan B (virtual event), while waiting with any positive signal from the Town of Cary. As soon as the long-awaited nod came, the team rolled up its sleeves and got to work. The word was out - Cary Diwali 2021 was happening, but it would be a scaled down event. Applications for performing in the cultural segment were rolled out and auditions soon got underway. Vendor spots, albeit limited in number, were grabbed with the same alacrity as in past years. However, “The Question” remained. Who Saathee.com
62
would be the evening headliner performer? Bringing in a big name from overseas was not going to be possible. Hum Sub turned its lens inward, into the community. A local production company, 4D Entertainment, stepped up to the plate to perform a Bollywood-style storyline interspersed with some old and new favorites, supported by the talented dancers of two popular Triangle-area dance schools. Just as Team 2021 thought they had this nailed and things were on track, the weatherman came-a-calling. The prediction for Oct 9, 2021, was a chilling “90% rain”! Oh no! Questions started pouring into Hum Sub’s social media platform, “Was it on”? “Rain or shine, the show must go on,” declared Hum Sub president and it did! It was a sight to see colorful umbrellas pop up intermittently as a crowd of 5000 plus turned up at the Koka Booth Amphitheater for yet another edition of Cary Diwali. The grounds were wet and slushy but that did not deter folks from splashing their way across the open field to reach the vendor booths and pick up bargains or a bite of that never-fails-to-satiate samosas! And the roar that rose from the crowd as the fireworks started to mark the end of the celebrations just proved that there was just no “scale down” of the enthusiasm of the community. Cary Diwali 2021 was presented by HumSub on Saturday, October 9, 2021. This year’s theme was “Vihaan – New Beginnings.” Vihaan is Sanskrit for “Dawn” and symbolizes the beginning of a post-pandemic world. Cary Diwali is an annual event and it celebrates India’s rich culture and heritage. The event was held at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, NC. U.S. has also grown, with overall bilateral trade in goods and services reaching $149 billion in 2019. The United States is also important to India from a cultural and educational exchange perspective. In 2020, Indian students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions contributed over $8 billion to the U.S. economy. That number will continue to increase with the United States remaining an attractive option for post-graduate work in STEM disciplines. Additionally, the people-to-people ties in the form of the 4-million-strong Indian diaspora all around the United States contribute to the solid cultural exchange between both countries. Ekal’s Aggressive March Toward Mission 2025 Photos courtesy: Ekal
AASOA of NC (Asian American Store Owner association of North Carolina) hosted its inaugural Grand Garba Dandiya Night with the legendary performer from Gujarat Kirtidan Gadhvi. There were attendees from the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia who enjoyed the infectious sounds of garba music. Project Laadki – an effort supporting young girls, was introduced at the event. Several little girls were invited to the stage. The garba night was held at the Raleigh State Fairgrounds Exposition Center on September 25, 2021. AASOA of NC was formed to help Asian American store owners in North Carolina to negotiate with vendors. The organization also takes on the task of lobbying for supporting C-Store owners to advance their own businesses. For more details, visit Aasoaofnc.com.
Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of USA hosted a day-long virtual National Conference with 220 registrants from U.S., Canada and India on September 18, 2021. The primary objective of this conference was to review the scalability of ‘Ekal Abhiyan’ projects (an umbrella organization of Ekal’s various logistic operations) and to align the aspirations of Ekal-America and Ekal-India for future goals. With the Covid-19 pandemic affecting rural life, this conference had the arduous task of remapping success milestones for Mission 2025, which was outlined in 2020. The Ekal-India team presented revitalized facets of Ekal Abhiyan, namely Digital Literacy, Arogya Foundation, Gramothan Foundation, E-Shiksha, and Global Communication, with a focus on the covid-19 pandemic, skill development and economic empowerment. This team introduced the topics like innovativeness and accountability in capital projects, technology roadmap, fund-raising targets, cutting-edge technology for project management, and youth involvement. Due to the aggressive safety campaign, herbal medications, nutritional food provisions and isolationist tactics that Ekal field volunteers vigorously promoted in villages, the pandemic’s effect on rural folks was very minimal. Field volunteers countered misinformation about the vaccine by asserting its benefit and made it worry-free with videos of their own vaccinations. In 2020 Ekal-USA, with virtual events, had raised almost $10 million, with $6.5 million coming in from the year-end gala. This year Ekal-USA will once again hold a virtual gala on Saturday, November 13, 2021. For more details, visit Ekal.org. Saathee.com

Crispy Masala Potatoes w/Cilantro Garlic Aioli
Saathee RECIPES
The holiday season is officially in full swing and here’s the perfect side dish! Whether you’re continuing Diwali celebrations or prepping for Thanksgiving with friends and family, these oven-roasted potatoes will be a crowd pleaser. Who doesn’t love crispy potatoes?? I decided to add a desi twist to this popular side dish by subbing in Indian spices and pairing it with cilantro aioli. Hint: the key to crispy potatoes is boiling them before placing them in the oven. Serves: 4-6 people Prep Time: 1 ½ hrs By: Taige Shukla
Ingredients 5 large Yukon potatoes (cubed) 2 cloves garlic (minced) ½ tsp baking soda 1 ½ tsp cumin 1 tsp coriander ¼ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp chili powder ¼ tsp sugar ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp garam masala ¼ cup oil Salt & pepper to taste Lemon For Cilantro Garlic Aioli: 6oz plain Greek yogurt 1/3 cup mayonnaise ½ cup cilantro (loosely packed) 2 cloves garlic (minced) Lemon Salt to taste
Saathee.com
Directions 1
Start by bringing a large pot of water to a boil then stir in a pinch of salt and the baking soda. Cut the potatoes into 1-inch cubes and boil for 10 mins or until you can pierce them with a fork. Drain the water from the potatoes and add them back to the pot.
2
Preheat oven to 425°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Next toss the potatoes with 2 cloves of minced garlic, oil and the spices; cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, sugar, garlic powder, garam masala, and cinnamon. Once fully coated, add the potatoes to the prepped baking sheet and bake for 30-45 mins, or until perfectly crisp.
3
While the potatoes are roasting, start on the cilantro garlic aioli. In a blender or food processor add in the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, cilantro, 2 cloves minced garlic, juice from half a lemon, and salt to taste. Blend until smooth. Feel free to add additional spices according to your taste preference.
4
Once the potatoes are ready, top with finely chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lemon. Serve with the cilantro garlic aioli and enjoy!

Thinking
continued from page 60
continued from page 48
To think about things that we need to think about, we must not think about things that we must not think about! It is important to find the part of the “you” that generates nonsense and beat it down so that it doesn’t get in the way of the you that needs to deal with real things and make real decisions that make real differences.
at me when I say this; but the reason is very simple. There are many avenues open to support children’s education: there are scholarships (merit or special), there are loans and other support, there are grandparents who are generally eager to help; children can support themselves, by working part-time, and still go to school. There are many ways their education can be helped; but I have not heard of anyone, any bank knocking on my door suggesting that they are willing to loan me money for my retirement when I stop working at 65. Parents must think 10 times before they cash out their retirement account to support children’s education.
A Clash of Infinities So, it is possible to inhabit a world that has a different kind of infinity that is quite unlike that of the real universe that we live in. And we do. And this is where all the nonsense comes from. It is inescapable because the world is not something that we can comprehend in its entirety, because a lot of it is neither right here, nor is it in the now. We cannot get away from the fact that time stretches ahead of us; nor can we see too much beyond the tips of our noses, although we often must. However, we do have to deal with currently unobservable things that make up the universe. And we do this by imagining, by hypothesizing, by theorizing, and yes, sometimes by fabricating nonsense, because not everything that we imagine will turn out to be grounded. Nonsense is not a homogenous clump though; there are varying shades of “nonsenseness”. So, we assign probabilities to these things, and this has nothing to do with whether we ever attended a Probability-101 class, for, we are sophisticated probability and statistics machines by birthright. We assign various shades of gray to our imaginative creations based on our prior experiences that give us grounding in the form of common sense, fundamental principles and reasonably effective rules of thumb.
The remaining seven bad habits will be covered next month in Part II. Mo Vidwans is an independent, board certified financial planner. For details visit, VidwansFinancial.com, call 984-888-0355 or write to: mpvidwans@yahoo.com

matters too. There are things that have very high impact on our lives, for example, if something is likely to get worse over time and also have high impact, and if we fail to see that as a significant risk, we may act in ways that are dangerous to our well-being. On the other hand, if we take what a more careful eye would see as a molehill to be a mountain, we will act in ways that will make us our own worst enemies. There are no easy answers, and there is no crystal ball. We must do what we must do to keep the nonsense under control and the sense in focus.

Climate and Trees
continued from page 22
materials and medicines to local people. They also have different cultural and spiritual values depending on where you are in the world. Forests are often nestled within landscapes occupied by all sorts of other uses, like farms, towns and cities. Everyone has different preferences for how landscapes should look, and whose vision wins out depends on relationships of power. Researchers working in Uganda in 2014 described what they called carbon colonialism: plantations established to offset greenhouse gas emissions destroyed the crops and burial sites of local people and convicted those accused of trespassing on what had previously been public land. This is just one among many examples of tree planting, however well-intended, blighting lives. Using trees as a tool becomes unjust when it involves asking poorer rural people to compromise their livelihoods so that wealthier people or nations can continue to consume fossil fuels. Rather than asking if trees can help tackle the climate crisis, perhaps we should ask how much the world should really rely on trees as a climate solution. There is a lot to be learned from efforts that have managed to increase tree cover and offer benefits to local people, like new income sources. Often, these initiatives are successful because they take local needs and values seriously. Local and indigenous people are leaders in this process, not afterthoughts. And ultimately, reforestation will succeed if it benefits people, as well as the planet. back to the 1905 Jacobson v. Massachusetts put a Christiancentric twist to your “social responsibility” and love for the neighbor. Then, you had to get the smallpox vaccine for the common good. But just as post-9/11 Iraq War disaster failed to mobilize America to the tune of a WW-II frenzy, over 35 percent of Americans are still walking around refusing vaccines and believing fully in horse-deworming medicines curing them. One of them I knew is dead now. But that’s a choice you enjoy here. And that debate can be expanded: Aborting a baby with a heartbeat is murder; not wearing a seatbelt is also my problem, because my brain injury will strain the medical system and raise your insurance rates; smoking will do the same; eating fried chicken and becoming obese will do the same as well. The entire country should be on a treadmill nightly for the Common Good. So how much can a government push you to do things that you consider an Orwellian intrusion on your freedom and basic human rights? That’s a tough question that right wing and left wing pundits are fighting out on live competing networks nightly. Yes of course an obese, old or sickly person has more of a risk of carrying an active infection. Do we next send them to special facilities to be isolated in critical times like a pandemic? And of course the unvaccinated are now straining the hospital systems in massive numbers. Should we let them die because they exercised their “My Body-My Choice” rights? Actually, both these scenarios are playing out in national debates. I know of a vaccinated doctor who is dead. I know of nurses who say hospitals are lying about the vaccinated hospitalizations to make an example of the unvaccinated people. The liberal media reports only about the country folks in southern states, but as of this writing, two Midwestern states and three western states have full hospitals. Four of them went to Joe Biden in 2020. The southern state crisis has gradually faded like clockwork at the 2-month mark for the variants of this disease. But … it’s time for another variant … and the next booster maybe? So Moral Absolutism and Conventionalism are really a bi-partisan propaganda technique. It was used by many authoritarian brutes over the centuries and has now become a science – using precise keywords and buzzwords or specially targeted audiences in specially gathered databases. That’s how the cash flows into the pockets of the rich and powerful. “You are either with us, or you are the enemy.” Democrats are the socialist sheeple, but we are the libertyminded warriors who blindly follow a lying and cheating and sexually molesting real estate developer guy. The passion on both sides is as stunning as the death toll from this pandemic. In the end, we can only pray that we will get immune from both the propaganda and the virus – turn off the TVs and welcome some friends for the holidays.
My recent adventures have birthed some rather intriguing results. Some of these were very small, like realizing my hair is finally long enough to have it properly braided. Others have been more grandiose such as conversing with some celebrities I’ve been a fan of for years. Each encounter was greatly elevated due to their personal nature. That is to say… each would have felt distinctly different if done through a digital screen. When you’re surrounded by like-minded individuals in person, there’s a specific… spark in the air. An ambiance that only something like that can properly produce. When you’re an artist, those responses from the crowd have quite the impact on how the performance will continue. When you’re a fellow audience member, a laugh, scream, or other encouragement can make all the difference as far as personal gratification. As an example, there was an older comedy film that was re-released in the theater for one evening. As a fan of this film, I jumped at the chance to finally watch it in the cinema as before I was only able to see it on TV. Even though there were only 10 other people in the space with me, the occasional laughter that echoed behind me at various moments made the experience so much more fulfilling and worthwhile. So… if you do have the capability to travel and/or go out for some form of entertainment, I encourage you to do so. Even if there are mask mandates in place, that shouldn’t discourage you from exploring, socializing, and otherwise enjoying a few precious hours of festivities within a collective of compatible admirers. There is, indeed, nothing else quite like it. Another thing you get off your plate early is the letters of recommendation. Think of teachers, mentors or coaches that you have formed a close relationship with over the years. Give them your resume and ask them to write you a letter of recommendation early in the process to ensure they have time to write a thoughtful recommendation. 2. Stay Organized Regardless of how many schools you choose to apply to, there can still be a lot of information and conflicting dates to remember. Instead of trying to keep track of it mentally, write it down and organize it. List out all deadlines, the cost of attendance, whether you need test scores, how many recommendations schools require and if they require any supplemental essays. As you complete the items on the checklist, cross them off. That way, you are never left wondering if you forgot to answer a supplemental essay question or how many letters of recommendations you need to submit. 3. Ask for Help You aren’t expected to do this all on your own. Ask a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher or school counselor for help with an essay, your college list or any other part of the application. You could even consider hiring an independent counselor to be your guide and assist you with more specific issues. Don’t wait until it’s too late. 4. Reuse What You Can Luckily, the Common App makes it easier for students to apply to multiple schools a little quicker. You won’t have to refill out your basic information numerous times, and you can send your personal statement to all the universities that accept the Common App. However, some schools will require supplemental essays. As you apply to more schools, you might realize you have to write on a similar topic for multiple schools. Reuse the content when you can, but make sure that each essay is still tailored to the particular school and fully answers the specific prompt. 5. Keep a Positive Attitude You will get in somewhere! If you have planned ahead, written genuine essays that reflect your personality and applied to a balanced list of colleges, then you will likely get into a school that is the perfect fit for you. College application season can be stressful, but by taking these steps, you can manage the workload and find your place at the college of your dreams.

NOVEMBER 2021
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
This month you should enjoy a very brisk and happy time. If unemployed, you may receive a job opportunity or chance for a rise in status. You will benefit through your partner. This is also a very good time to start a new business. Minor problems with your kids could bother you. If involved in a legal dispute, you could benefit through judgment. Avoid travel or relying on your subordinates.
Your income and expenses should balance each other out this month. Wise decisions may shield you from losing an important opportunity. Investment in real estate and partnership will prove beneficial. This is a good time to change your workplace or field of study. You will feel happier and more confident this month, so be sure to remain so to enjoy success. A good state of health is clearly indicated.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
This month will bring mixed results. There is danger of developing an aggressive temperament, so try to remain humble and gentle within your relationships. You may develop a deeper connection with seniors, but at the expense of support from your own age group. The health of a loved one may create anxiety. Your income and/or work status are also guaranteed to improve.
Though you will be overly optimistic about the results, any business prospects you consider this month could prove beneficial. Relations with influential people will increase. Marital happiness should also be there. Your friends and associates will support you. Be very careful and avoid driving, if possible, this month. This is not an appropriate time to invest in any new property deals. Try to maintain your self-confidence and control your temper.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
Even though you will do very well financially, a lack of contentment may bother you. Try to slow down and take a trip or two to feel relaxed. Things should improve towards the end of the month, but aggression could easily turn into frustration. A fix for an old issue is welcome, but it may be overshadowed by a new problem. Harmony with your partner may delight you. Drive very carefully.
You will experience a slow yet positive turn this month. Improvements in both your personality and overall outlook will provide happiness and relaxation; just be sure to welcome these changes with open arms. Trust your intuition to make confident decisions. Minor family problems could be there. You may count on friends and associates as well during this turning period. Drive very carefully.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
Maintain a balanced nature to achieve the best results. You should experience a sense of dynamism with the help of your friends. This friend circle will also increase. Income sources will improve this month. A minor health improvement could be there. There is the possibility of receiving bad news within your family. Control your temper and speech in public places. Avoid travel, if possible.
Your instincts should help you make smart decisions this month. Profit from a business/trade deal will be more than expected, hence your bank balance should increase. Students will see disappointing results. Don’t react to your partner too aggressively as your focus should be on earning more money. This is a good time to develop new relationships. Welcome all changes with confidence.
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Financial losses may eliminate your happiness. After a negative start, things will improve dramatically during the second half of the month, so wait until then to make a move. Don’t take on any debt to cover your losses. Relations with your partner will take a positive turn and become an asset for your future. Improvement for health-related problem is also on the way.
Now is when plans regarding property investments will materialize. Your creative intelligence can make you quite successful. This is also a favorable time for love and romance. Friends and siblings will offer whatever assistance you need. Your opponents will dare not to face you. You must seriously watch your health. Travel this month could also be troublesome.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
You may experience numerous changes in your life all at once. If you’re not careful, you may lose an important opportunity; keep a relaxed temperament and don’t try to overanalyze this offer. Simply accept any unexpected circumstances that may come your way. Also, be prepared to work diligently for the next few years. Luck will favor you through your partner during the last days of the month. A mild attitude towards an enemy may hurt you.
Try to control yourself internally and remain honest as you could potentially shift your morality for the worse. If you’re not careful, this might hurt your reputation. Try to not make any major financial related decisions this month. You may benefit through your business partner. This is a good time to spend on a celebration or religious event. Accept any major change in your life with caution.

Dances of India

have been established. People were brought together to celebrate life in its many forms. We all know about the origins of Garba, Raas, Bhangra, Gidda, Bathukamma, Kolattam dances, just to name a few. I wrote extensively about these folk and community dances in the past publications. However, one of the unique examples of community festival dance is the Ratha Yatra, a chariot festival. My sister lived in Puri, Orissa. Here the festival holds immense significance among the Puri locals as well as other pilgrims and devotees. The chariots on which the deities are taken to the temple are massive pieces of art that are adorned with numerous designs, flowers & patterns. During this festival, people dance, and sing, accompanied by musical instruments. Many other cultures practice across in the same way in several parts of the world, such as Asia, Europe and South America. Some of the countries that celebrate similar festivals are Armenia, Greece, Peru, Argentina, Italy, most of the South America and so on. Many also carry Mother Mary during these processions. Another unique community dance is called Lezim dance. This fascinating rhythmic dance is performed with a Lezim or a small mallet. This dance is named after a wooden idiophone to which thin metal discs are fitted to produce a jingling sound and the dancers use this as a part of the rhythm. Dholki, a drum instrument, is used as the main percussion music. This dance is most popular in Maharashtra, and one can see it during festival times, performed in public squares, schools, and along the streets with processions. Groups of young boys and girls holding these Lezims in their hands do a very fine series of figure movements while they make sounds with the Lezim to the accompaniment of the drums. This is not an easy community dance. Our hands can tire easily. With national consciousness of the arts growing from day to day, many of these beautiful expressive dances are coming to urban and international audiences and being received with enthusiasm and success they deserve. Now they are taking their rightful place along with the classical dances in the furtherance of our cultural heritage. There is more demand now for precise movements, coordination among dancers, formations, costume color coordination, and exotic jewelry, along with heavy drumming and other percussion supporting the music. I am not sure if we are just taking these folk and community dances to another level or are we losing the freedom these dances provide to enjoy and participate without any formal training. However, it is wonderful to see certain dance forms like Garba, Bonalu, Bathukamma, and Bhangra are still a large part of our social interaction among all ages.
Broken sidewalks are bits of the grander needs of infrastructure repair, but there is also an even larger need of repair for our innerstructures. These invisible infrastructures of our being, our wholeness, our sense of community. The infrastructure of community, society, the whole dang proverbial village, that would in more sociable times come together to collectively fight off an enemy, a biological threat floating in the air, seems like some long-lost philosophical unity of the past. This gives the enemy, or an invisible bug, an upper hand. Repairing and rebuilding the stability and strength of our innerstructures has become the need of the time, as much as for our physical infrastructures. These cracks, created by ideologies, distrust, misinformation and disinformation, are affecting the bonds and fabric of the village. These invisible slithering critters hiding in them, are disheveling our peace of mind, laughing at our foibles, our inability to simply work things out. We can and have put a price on rebuilding our physical infrastructure, come up with bipartisan agreements, and then implement them and get the needed work going. Repairing and rebuilding our innerstructures is an open book, there’s no amount money that will fix this, it requires engagement with the others, the ones different in beliefs and ideologies. It requires swatting away the slithering critters of fringe minorities and bringing together the mass of reasoned folks who work and live in the functional yet delicate middle. Innerstructure is hard to define or self-realize. It’s in our DNA, the good and the bad, the goofy and the seductive, the weak and the strong, the evil and the empathic. These flipsides of the proverbial coins or either side of the cracks if you will, unhinge the daily groove of life. We’ve all got to work on it. This will take simple measures, reaching out, giving someone a hand, focusing on the commonalities. There’s no way to implement some grand plans for this work, it is the effort of the many sweeping away the divisiveness of the few that will begin to make a difference. I continued my drizzle stroll and made it to the car parked in the lower end of the parking lot, jumped in and sat there as the rain stopped dancing on the roof and the windshield. A sliver of sunshine peeked through the lazily moving clouds and now a few minutes later it was full blown sunshine. Driving out of the parking lot I hit a huge pothole on the public road, let out a swear, and drove on. Mark that one for the infrastructure work. Now I’ve got a pothole or two to fix in my innerstructure today, to smooth out a few bumps in my life circle. I’ll meet anyone there, if they are willing to meet me there, in that unseen, yet crucial world. All the cracks be damned.
