tting on the 12th floor balcony of a high-rise hotel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on a bright August evening, looking down at the crowds of diverse folks milling about on the sand, bobbing in the ocean, playing with kids, I thought of the carefree conviviality of the hundreds within my view. Some of them are likely deep political partisans, but in these summertime blendings, the ocean breeze mellowing out even the grumpiest grumps, the incoming political season probably wasn’t on many minds. People were courteous and friendly to a fault.

The soft ocean breeze pushed aside the hot winds of August that are blowing around the country and rustling up the divisiveness of the incoming political season that will pick up speed as September rolls around. Extreme partisan political pressures are constantly trying to undress our democratic institutions and processes. The firewall against these sinister forces is the quiet majority, the moderates, the ones that do the real work and daily drudgery of running towns, neighborhoods, states, and the country. The large middle is the backbone of this country, politically and economically.

The sweetness of summer is slowly fading, the workers of tomorrow’s world are heading back to school, and in all directions the political winds leading up to 2024 presidential election are now blowing, and its gonna get windy.

The Republicans held their first Presidential primary debate in late August (it was held after we went to press so I can’t give my thoughts on it). It was the first official brawl for the Republican nomination. There are others. Democrats are not holding Presidential primary debates, essentially accepting that President Biden will win the nomination, even though a couple of Democrats have joined the race.

A new third party has assembled and is working to get on ballots in all states. I’ll talk more about them

Blumenthal’s second annual Charlotte International Arts Festival will take place September 15 - October 1, 2023 at various venues. The festival uniquely blends artists from around the world and around the corner, and this year, the focus is on international artists and organizations right here in Charlotte. Luke Jerram’s GAIA, a giant inflatable of the earth, created from NASA imagery, will return to Founders Hall to highlight the global community we seek to bring together for 17 days. Underneath GAIA will be the new International Bazaar, a two-day celebration taking over Founders Hall with abundant opportunities to shop and learn, with vendors, music, food, and, most importantly, connection.

As has been well-documented in countless columns written about US immigration law, the exceedingly low number of available H-1B visas has been a drag on the nation’s ability to fill specialty occupation jobs. H-1B workers are required to assume jobs that minimally require a bachelor’s degree or are considered complex or unique in nature that only a professional can assume the tasks for the position.

The statute and regulations governing H-1B visas were last revised in the mid-1990s, during which time Congress placed limits on the number of new available visas that could be issued each year; that limit was placed at 85,000 new visas issued, with 20,000 designated for individuals graduating from US universities or colleges with a Master’s degree or higher (commonly referred to as the ‘Masters Cap’). The remaining 65,000 H-1B visas were dubbed the ‘Regular Cap’, as they were available to any applicant worldwide if they had a US employer as sponsor.

As the US economy evolved from being manufacturing-centric to a more service-based system, the need for H-1B workers steadily increased. As a result, the 85,000 H-1B Cap was often met on the first few days of available filing, previously in early April of each calendar year. These applications were typically voluminous filings, often including 100+ pages of documentation and usually prepared by

American Entertainment Industry has Reached Yet Another Breaking Point

An odd line from one of the most influential musicians in modern history… and while such words were highly ridiculed back in 1971, they couldn’t be more poignant in the world at large today.

Bob Dylan was always a man who kept people guessing. He can reinvent himself while at the same time remain relatively unchanged within his true values. His musical and literary prowess are still felt through multitudes of song covers and random quotes often attributed to his constant esoteric view of everything around him.

But this essay isn’t meant to become endless praise for such a man.

Instead, let’s just let his words sink in for a moment… a good long moment.

The American entertainment industry has reached yet another breaking point. Between the endless supply of streaming services quilting our brains with so many shows it would require each of us to be cloned at least twice to even watch it all and the threat of Artificial Intelligence duplicating intellectual properties without permission to further crank out said content… well it’s been a roller coaster to say the least.

I’ve already mentioned in a previous article that higher ups approving such controversial ideas is strictly criticized throughout more than a dozen science fiction stories. Ironically some of these stories have even been approved by said executives (and probably without fully understanding the veracity of said subject matter).

But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer. Kenneth Branagh stars as Poirot and directs the film with a cast that includes Kyle Allen and Michelle Yeoh. Look for the film on September 15, 2023.

It Lives Inside

An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness. Bishal Dutta directs this horror drama starring Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, and Mohana Krishnan. The film releases on September 22, 2023.

Juhi Chawla Returns in Friday Night Plan

When their mother takes off on a business trip, two bickering brothers unite to secretly attend the hottest party of the year before she returns. An unbreakable bond between siblings, growing up together, supporting each other and working out differences are some of the stories tagged in the upcoming film Friday Night Plan, directed by Vatsal Neelakantan. The film features Babil Khan, Amrith Jayan, Aadhya Anand, Medha Rana and Ninad Kamat along with Juhi Chawla Mehta in a special appearance. The film begins streaming on September 1, 2023.

Prashanth Neel directs the cast of Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Sriya Reddy in the upcoming movie Salaar. It is about a gang leader that tries to keep a promise made to his dying friend and takes on the other criminal gangs. The film hits cinemas on September 29, 2023.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Members of the Osage tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover. Expressing my own opinions through writing is a privilege. I can say what is in my heart without being afraid of people rejecting what I feel. Never in a million years would I want a robot to take away my privilege to express. We have a dangerous superpower that allows us to make a machine do the thinking for us. Writing a paper for English class has turned into copy pasting the prompt into ChatGPT and getting the perfect paper in seconds. There’s no way to go back in time to erase the powerful resources that have been laid out at our feet, but Artificial Intelligence isn’t the end of our world.

Artificial Intelligence may be created to think like a human, but it can never feel like one. I believe that the purpose of Artificial Intelligence is to enhance creativity, not replace it.

Students who feed essay prompts into ChatGPT to write for them are only hurting themselves. They are handing over the power of knowledge to a robot. They will never get the opportunity to create something of their own and feel good about their creation.

Teachers are quick to notice an unoriginal piece of work because they can tell when a piece lacks the emotion that only humans can put into their writing. In the end, the cheating student loses their teachers’ trust, and the student doesn’t get credit for ChatGPT’s work.

When dance becomes an integral part of being human, it cannot be obliterated. The natural impulse to dance starts at birth. Before a child can speak, he or she attempts moves or dances to the music. Despite the efforts by many to minimize the importance of classical dances and those who see classical dances as an old tradition do not understand its ubiquity which implies a survival advantage.

According to Hinduism, Brahma, the creator and one of the Hindu Trinity, with the help of Goddess Saraswati, giver of higher learning and the arts, enlisted Bharatha Muni’s support in writing the fifth Veda, called Natyashastra. This is a book on drama, dance, and music.

It describes the setup of classical dance forms, including the jewelry, the building of the stages, the orchestra, the costumes of the dancers, meaning of hand gestures, facial expressions, positions of the feet and many more intricate details.

Classical dances were meant to become a guiding light. Through the medium of dance and music, human beings were to understand the concepts of good and evil, moral and immoral, and temporary and permanent.

Due to its divine origins, the earliest support to the art of dance came from temples, which were also the main area of communion between the commoners and the scholars. Local leaders supported the temples and were its patrons. The temples reverberated with devotion to the gods through elaborate rituals, part of which were also the twin arts of singing and dancing. Local patrons took pride in their temples and provided it with the best available talent. It was

also a matter of honor for artists to be associated with service to God. A special class of dancers dedicated to God, deva (God) dasi (servant), came about whose accomplishments were respected and celebrated by many.

The kings and queens were not far behind in extending patronage to artists and they did much to support temples. Financial support and donation of land for temples helped these places of worship to thrive. Each temple was assured not only of local support from their zamindaars or leaders but royal patronage too, thus increasing the power and prestige of each temple and its resident dancers.

In 16th century, with the arrival of foreign powers in India, these dances experienced a huge setback. First, for trade and then for permanent stay and rule, these foreign rulers decreased the power of both local leaders and the royal courts.

This led to slow but sure decline in support to and patronage of temples, in turn leading to the decline of these religious art forms. The indigenous arts of India were looked down upon by colonialists and discouraged when Victorian civilization took over.

By the time, India attained independence from foreign rule in 1947, most temples and its inhabitants had been reduced to near destitution. In the absence of support, they had no means of sustaining these art forms. The British went further and created laws banning the practice of Devadasi system. Arts that had evolved and developed over centuries were reduced to nothing by the time India attained its independence.

It was during the struggle for independence and determination of several nationalists that the revival of Indian arts began. All over the country, from the beginning of the twentieth century, individuals tried to help save old

Snow White’s stepmother wished to remain the fairest, Rapunzel’s captor desired eternal youth and innumerable characters from tales of fantasy, chased the elixir of life. In the real world, would surviving to a ripe old age be a relief or a blessing?

Sitting in the arc of middle age, I have the opportunity, no, privilege to reflect on my past decades and wonder about the future.

I don’t even know if I can assume there will be a whole decade let alone multiple decades left. Aging sounds dreadful but I am hoping it isn’t.

I will consider myself lucky if I live to see the day my hair is mostly silver. As the years go by, I dream of rejoicing my kids’ progress into adulthood, to have conversations about serious topics, to benefit from their advice and experience new inventions and hopefully visit more destinations from my travel bucket list.

I believe that after crossing into the fifties, when the bulk of parenting is complete, one can enjoy the freedom to focus on themselves, give one’s health a priority and pursue new interests.

This is a cycle driven by income, not debt growth. Unlike the Great Financial Crisis, which was driven by debt, mostly mortgage debt, this cycle has been driven by low unemployment, strong consumer balance sheets, and wage growth.

Unemployment is near 50-year lows, consumer debt to income and savings are at healthy levels, and wages are up near 18 percent since the start of the pandemic. Most consumers have locked in their mortgage at low rates and are generating a positive carry on it.

Only 11 percent of outstanding household debt carries variable interest rates. This is a cycle that is driven by fiscal expansion. There was approximately $5 trillion spent during the pandemic. Some of which is still sitting out there on consumer balance sheets. There is still another nearly $2 trillion that will be put to work from the IRA and Infrastructure bill. This is a cycle driven by supply and demand imbalances.

Initially, the imbalances were in many aspects of the supply chain, most notably semiconductors. Now the focus is on housing. Unlike previous supply and demand imbalances, bringing on housing supply takes a long time and has a far greater multiplier effect on the economy. There are a few implications from this.

The economy has a nice cushion with the consumer in good shape and spending coming from the government and housing. With lower debt levels and a significant amount of debt locked in at low rates, the economy is less rate sensitive, meaning that the Fed will have to keep rates higher for longer.

Lastly, many traditional recession indicators such as the yield-curve are less relevant. The yield-curve has been manipulated for years with QE and now QT, with all the fiscal spending there are new supply and demand dynamics, and the inversion could simply be reflecting lower inflation in the future rather than lower growth.

This cycle is unique when it comes to earnings. This is an inflation cycle. Higher inflation means that while real growth may fall, nominal growth will stay positive and growing. Earnings are nominal, meaning that the earnings collapse many have expected hasn’t occurred. This quarter is likely the trough in earnings.

In 2024, earnings are expected to accelerate nearly 13 percent. These estimates have been increasing in recent weeks. An additional tailwind for earnings is the dollar. The dollar took off between 5-7 percent from earnings in 2022. The dollar is down nearly 15 percent since October of last year. A weaker dollar will not only boost earnings, but it will help loosen financial conditions. The dollar from a fundamental perspective seems to have topped. The Fed looks like it is close to the end, while other central banks are likely to be more hawkish. From a technical perspective, the dollar is now below both its declining 50D and 200D moving average. It is making a series of lower highs and lower lows, indicating a down-trend.

The rally off the lows has also been unique. While breadth has expanded recently, the rally has been very top heavy with a few large cap tech names driving the indices. While large cap tech remains an important allocation, it does have less upside than other areas of the market. In certain ways, large-cap tech has become defensive. These companies have the best balance sheets and can finance at the cheapest rates.

As investors get more comfortable that the Fed is near the end and earnings and the economy are going to hold up, they will likely start to reduce the significant positioning in these names.

There is another universe though: one that is potentially much larger in some ways than the universe that we think we deal with. It is helpful, using a bit of a twist of language, to reframe this other universe as our “Uniferse” so that it is clearer what this is, and what the stuff that makes it up is.

What better way than a verse that helps delineate the universe from our Uniferse?

Recently, we experienced a huge shortage of rice. India put a ban on exporting non-basmati rice in mid-July, which led to panic buying, hoarding, and price gouging across the USA. People stood in lines and attacked grocery stores to get their hands on even one bag of rice.

There were many interesting discussions that resulted from this. One of the conversations that caught my attention was whether rice was worth all this trouble. People were questioning the health benefits of rice, and whether we should be even eating it in the first place! Aren’t we supposed to avoid carbs? Isn’t white rice the worst for diabetics? Shouldn’t we take this as an opportunity to give up rice? All these discussions started popping up, which led me to write about this topic.

Coincidentally, September is National Rice Month! Rice is the most widely consumed crop by more than half of the world’s population. There are two distinct species of cultivated rice. Asian rice (Oryza sativa) and African Rice (Oryza glaberrima). Most of the rice produced today is Asian rice. There has been a lot of debate and research about whether the cultivation of rice originated in China or India. There is consensus that rice has been cultivated for more than 8000 years.

There are more than 40,000 varieties of rice, and it is a staple ingredient in more than 100 countries!

Rice varieties are classified as short, medium, or long grain, depending on the length and width of the rice when cooked. The main difference between these sizes is the starch content.

Oppenheimer and the Bhagavad Gita

He often used Sanskrit verses, and the Bhagavad Gita was special for him but not in the way Christopher Nolan’s film depicts it

A scene in the film Oppenheimer, in which the physicist is quoting a Bhagavad Gita verse while making love, has upset some Hindus. The information commissioner of the Indian government, Uday Mahurkar, said in an open letter the scene was a “direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus” and alleged that it amounted to “waging a war on the Hindu community.” He also said that it almost appeared to be “part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”

It is hard to say how many Hindus were offended by the Gita quote in a sexually charged scene, but there were those who disagreed with the views expressed in the tweet. Pavan K. Varma, a former diplomat, wrote that the controversy was a “misplaced outrage.”

Some others were not offended, just disappointed that the context of the lines quoted from the Bhagavad Gita was not brought out well. I should also add that Hindu texts composed over 1,000 years, starting around the sixth century B.C.E., have Sanskrit mantras for every occasion, including reciting some ritually before having sex. But they are context-specific, and certainly the Bhagavad Gita would not be used.

Overall, the controversy brought attention to the words quoted by J. Robert Oppenheimer while looking at the erupting fireball from the atomic bomb explosion in Los Alamos, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945: “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” These words are a paraphrase of Bhagavad Gita 11:32 where Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu – whom many Hindus think of as the supreme being – says that he is kala, or time.

Get These Tax Items Done Before the Year is Over

I am thinking about income taxes. Indeed, it is not too early to start thinking about them and have some plans ready to reduce taxes for this year, legally. For the tax year 2023, we would be compiling documents early part of next year (2024), long after the year 2023 is over, and filing them before April 15, 2024. The irony here is that we cannot do much at that point other than just compile, prepare, and file. If there is any thought of working on reducing taxes then the time to do something is now, before the year is over.

The other important aspect of tax planning is that much has changed/added for us to consider in taking advantage of (or just be aware of) tax point of view and I would think that it would behoove us to review and possibly take advantage of all that. Let us look at what has changed and how we can use it to our benefit. If I may just point out a few nuggets here of how people think about their taxes: They always think that tax-planning or optimizing is their accountant’s job and that tax refund is a good thing; both assumptions are not true. There are many more like these but I will not get into those at this time.

New 1099K reporting rules begin this year (2023); they should have started last year but IRS wasn’t ready and they pushed it out by a year. It is clear that more information has to be reported by third-party settlement networks such as PayPal, Venmo, eBay, Square and others. They must send out form 1099k to payees who are paid more than $600 a year for goods and services. Let’s say you sell an LP turntable and other similar goods together for $900 on eBay for which you had paid $2,300 initially. You will get a 1099K for this transaction, though this is not additional income for you because you just sold your own property. So, you would report $900 on schedule 1 as income on line 8z and then on line 24z, other adjustment on same schedule 1, enter the same amount to cancel out your unrequired added income. People in business would get many such 1099Ks and they would have to report those on schedule C.

Reporting on 1099Ks doesn’t change taxation of the underlying transactions. All, or let’s say most, of these transactions were supposed to be reported even when the 1099K requirement was not imposed, but IRS’s contention is that they were not reported because it was not a requirement by law. Stay tuned, there is much to be learned about this new income reporting structure for small incomes; most of it was indirectly ignored by small business owners.

Buying a new electric vehicle this year? You are in for a pleasant surprise as long as you follow the two rules put down by the new Law. Strict critical mineral and battery component rules are now in place for EVs put in use on or after April 18, 2023. EVs that meet both rules can qualify for a $7,500 credit on your taxes; if only one rule is met then the credit is $3,750.

Here are the two rules: First, the final assembly of the vehicle must happen in North America. Second, some highcost vehicles don’t qualify. The MSRP can’t exceed $55,000 for sedans and $80,000 for SUVs, vans, and pick-ups. I will assume at this time that this price limit for tax credit will move up every year as the auto prices crawl up. As mostly the case when taxes are concerned, there is also an income limit (MAGI) for qualifying for the EV credit. Check with your tax preparer.

Pondering over eco-saving upgrades to your home? You may qualify for one of two tax credits depending on the type of energy efficient system that you may decide to go for your residence.

The juicier tax credit is for the residential clean energy property credit for those who install energy system that uses renewable energy sources. Think in terms of solar panels, geothermal heat pumps, wind turbines, fuel cells or battery storage.

Clearly some of these improvements are not possible in an urban location but the credits are lucrative. The credit equals 30 percent of the cost of the materials and installation that you install in your home through 2032; after that it tapers off and expires.

Congress passed some smaller energy-efficient home improvement credits too; they had been around for years but Congress rejuvenated them beginning in 2023. Homeowners get up to 30 percent credit for the cost of certain type of insulation, boilers, central A/C systems, water heaters, heat pumps, exterior doors, windows and the like that they install in their homes until 2032.

There is a $1,200 generally aggregate yearly credit limit; this new limit replaces the old $500 lifetime cap. Also keep in mind that many specific types of home/energy improvements have specific limits. Again, check with your tax preparer.

Organizations Pledge to Work Together

The 4th Hindu Unity Day was organized by HSS Greater Charlotte & South Carolina Chapter at BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Mathews, NC on August 5, 2023. The event was attended by representatives from Hindu/Indian organizations joining in and pledging to work together for the community.

Vikas Deshpande (HSS National Media Team Lead) delivered the keynote address and thanked the organizations for their participation while urging them to work together for strengthening Hindu Unity.

He said that Hindu community is facing many challenges in the form of the caste bill SB403 introduced in California. The community needs to be alert against such moves as it might draw a wedge among the community members. Deshpande spoke of how coming together makes many things possible and asked the organizations to explore opportunities to come together and serve the needy local community like using Sewa Diwali platform and doing food drive here in Charlotte during Diwali.

Representatives from 34 Organizations that included Temples, Spiritual & Yoga organizations, Regional and Language based organizations, Wellness organizations, Business organizations joined the event and shared their organization’s vision and mission and pledged to work together.

Another 18 organizations wanted to join the event but could not join due to some conflict but shared either a video message or pledged to join the event in future and support this noble mission for future generations.

Aravind Modini (Media Coordinator, HSS NC/SC) made the opening remarks wherein he welcomed the representatives for joining the event and said unity brings in lots of changes. He said that Hindu community is one of the most peaceful communities and Hindus in USA have contributed so much to the areas of technology, medicine, and business.

All the organization participants thanked HSS for hosting the event and bringing all like-minded organizations under one umbrella. Some of the prominent community leaders who joined the even included Baldev Thakor from Art of Living, Mumukshu Brahmbhatt, from BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, Hemant Amin from Hindu Center, Vimal Patel (Gujarati Samaj, NC) and Mahesh Dongre from HSS. Other participants included Shiva Das (Coordinator, HSS Intellectual Activities, SE Region), Harikrishna Nagabandi (Senior Volunteer, HSS NC/SC), Tushar Karodi (Senior Volunteer, HSS NC/SC) and Shantanu Wadodkar (Aum School, NC).

Everyone enjoyed the presentations shared by the organizations and were served a vegetarian dinner by the BAPS Mandir after the event.

Record Breaking India Market Held in Toronto

The Gerrard India Bazaar, the oldest and largest Indian market in North America, attracted over 300,000 people to its 21st annual festival this year in Toronto, including the city’s Mayor Olivia Chow. It was held on the weekend of July 29-30, 2023, and stretched across seven blocks along Gerrard St., the Little India section of the city. The festival was jam-packed with crowds listening to Bollywood music resounding from the speakers while enjoying lots of food and vendors. Originating in the 1970s, Toronto’s Indian bazaar was once the only place to buy Indian groceries in North America. Poetry and Ghazal lovers in the Atlanta community were treated to a feast of Gujarati poems and Ghazals at the Double Tree Hotel in Marietta on the evening of Sunday, July 23, 2023. Two variations of Gujarati poets lifted the audience with their words. Sudhir Patel, resident of Charlotte, NC writes lyrics and Ghazals in Gujarati and Hindi. His poems are romantic compositions reflecting love, pain, loneliness, and relationship with Almighty! His soft voice and recitation style riveted the audience. Yagnesh Dave, who has earned his doctorate in ecology, is very much a modern poet who writes in a nonmetric style creating rhythm with sounds of his words. He successfully creates whole environment for his poems by using variety of dialects - from highly Sanskritized Gujarati to a common laborer’s language. His voice and delivery resonate with mixed audience and are hypnotic for the listeners. He has written several books of poems and published collection of essays along the way. At the conclusion of the program, Atlanta community’s well known and respected Mustafa Ajmeri, who has helped organize many plays, movies, music and dance concerts in Atlanta, presented a gift to Sudhir Patel. And Dr. Dhaval Shah offered a token of appreciation to Yagnesh Dave.

BAPS’ Festival of Inspirations Highlights Civic Duty and Public Service

BAPS hosted a special cultural program themed, “My Country, My Duty,” at the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey in August. Attendees of the program, which debuted as part of the Festival of Inspirations, were left inspired to reflect on the ways they could exemplify model citizenship and answer their respective “call to duty.”

The evening began with John F. Kennedy’s famous quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” This set the tone for reflections on service, further emphasized by Martin Luther King Jr.’s sentiment, “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

During the program, public servants such as police officers, firefighters, and elected officials were honored for their dedication to protecting and serving their communities. A donation of $5,000 was presented to the Rapid Response Partnership of Mercer County on behalf of BAPS, in recognition of their efforts responding to incidents of high complexity.

Another $5,000 donation was also presented by BAPS to the 200 Club of Mercer County, an association dedicated to providing financial assistance to families of essential personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The event emphasized the far-reaching effects of simple gestures, from voting to neighborhood cleanups, through various skits and addresses.

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS, conveyed that any profession can be transformed into a service for the broader benefit. “Whether you’re a doctor, a teacher, or any other professional, strive to excel in your role. Don’t just be ordinary; be outstanding in a way that contributes positively to society.”

Values such as integrity and morality were also a focal point of the evening. Speakers throughout the program highlighted that however one chooses to live and operate, doing so with a strong sense of morality

The Sports Authority of India Working to Establish Regional Centers and Institutional Units

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has, as of early August 2023, established 10 Regional Centers and two Institutional Units in various parts of the country. The functions of these centers are to implement and monitor the sports promotional schemes of SAI and Government of India, to conduct coaching camps and to assist the national teams for participation in international competitions by providing them with state-of-the-art infrastructure, equipment, coaching facilities and competition exposure, boarding and lodging to the selected trainees.

Ekal National Conference

Ekal’s National Conference this year will be held in Atlanta, between September 22 - 24, 2023. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement involved in integrated and holistic development of rural and tribal India and Nepal. The main activity undertaken in this movement is to run one-teacher schools (known as Ekal Vidyalayas) all over India, in the remotest rural & tribal villages to take the education to every child.

Other functions include scientific training, equipment support, to provide scientific back-up to sportspersons to deliver high level performance in sports, to plan, construct, acquire, develop, manage, maintain and utilize sports infrastructure and facilities in the region, to liaise with other organizations/ sports bodies.

The decision regarding creation of facilities/SAI centers depends on various factors, such as suitable proposals received from the State Governments, availability of funds, local demand, etc. Further, as a part of its restructuring exercise, SAI has carried out a review of its existing sports promotional schemes. In view of the available sports infrastructure and financial constraints, it has been decided to focus primarily on the existing centers with a view to achieve excellence.

A total of 187 centers, including NCOEs, STCs, Extension Centres are functional in the country for implementation of these schemes. Over 7780 talented sports persons are being trained in 34 sports disciplines on residential and nonresidential basis. The sportspersons identified under SAI Sports Promotional Schemes come from all sections of society, including the rural, backward, and tribal areas of the country.

Foundation Stone Laid for Redevelopment of 508 Railway Stations Across India

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in early August 2023 for the redevelopment of 508 Railway Stations across the country via video conferencing. Redeveloped at a cost of more than Rs 24,470 crores, these 508 stations are spread across 27 states and union territories, including 55 each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, 49 in Bihar, 44 in Maharashtra, 37 in West Bengal, 34 in Madhya Pradesh, 32 in Assam, 25 in Odisha, 22 in Punjab, 21 each in Gujarat and Telangana, 20 in Jharkhand, 18 each in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, 15 in Haryana, 13 in Karnataka among others.

Addressing the gathering, Modi remarked, “There is new energy, new inspirations and new resolutions”, the Prime Minister said underlining that it is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Indian Railway. He informed that almost 1300 prime railway stations in the country will now be redeveloped with modernity as ‘Amrit Bharat Stations’ and will get a new lease of life. Out of the 1300 railway stations, he said, the foundation stone for 508 Amrit Bharat Stations is being laid at the cost of Rs 25,000 crores. He emphasized that the redevelopment project will be a huge campaign for infrastructure development in the country along with the railways as well as the common citizens. Noting that its benefits will be spread to all states in the country, the 55 Amrit Stations will be developed in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, 34 stations in Madhya Pradesh, 44 stations in Maharashtra and prime railway stations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

Modi referred to the railway’s status as the lifeline of the country and said along with this, the identity of the cities is also linked with the railway stations which have become the heart of the city with the passing of time.

Upgraded stations will not only increase tourism but will also give a push to economic activities in the nearby areas. He said the “One Station One Product” scheme will help the artisans and will help in the branding of the district.

This year, Indian Railways received a budget of more than Rs 2.5 lakh crores, a five-fold increase as compared to beginning of 2014.

The redevelopment will provide modern passenger amenities along with ensuring well-designed traffic circulation, inter-modal integration, and signage for the guidance of passengers. The design of the station buildings will be inspired by local culture, heritage, and architecture.

North Carolina Hospitals Have Sued Thousands of Their Patients, a New Report Finds

North Carolina hospitals — led by the state’s largest public medical system — have sued thousands of their patients since 2017, according to a new analysis that sheds additional light on the aggressive tactics U.S. hospitals routinely use to collect from people who fall behind on their bills.

The report, produced by the state treasurer and Duke University School of Law researchers, and related patient interviews offer harrowing accounts of people pursued for tens of thousands of dollars and often surprised by liens that hospitals placed on family homes.

In some cases, spouses were targeted after their partners died. In others, patients interviewed by researchers said they’d been surprised to learn about property liens only after they tried to sell their homes or after a parent who owned the home died.

“I know my house will never be mine. It is going to be the hospital’s,” said Donna Lindabury, 70, whose home was targeted by Charlotte-based Atrium Health, which won a $192,000 judgment against her and her 79-year-old husband over his 2009 heart surgery. Interest on the debt represented more than half of the couple’s balance.

Lindabury said the hospital originally told them they could get assistance with the bills, but then denied their applications for aid. “People, where their God is money, they just don’t care,” she told researchers.

The North Carolina findings reinforce an investigation by KFF Health News and NPR, which found that most U.S. hospitals maintain policies to aggressively pursue patients for unpaid bills, using tactics such as lawsuits, selling patient accounts to debt buyers, and reporting patients to credit rating agencies.

Nationwide, about 100 million people — 41% of adults — have some form of health care debt, according to a KFF poll. Medical debt is most widespread in the South, where chronic disease is more prevalent and many states haven’t

Hi Saathee family! We’re back with another classic recipe, courtesy of my Amma (Grandma Shukla). This time we’re heading to South India with uttapam; the perfect light bite to close out the summer. Although typically considered a breakfast dish, it can really be enjoyed any time of day with your go-to chutney and favorite vegetables or toppings. This is a recipe you can easily make your own and, once the batter is prepped, will only take about 20 minutes to cook! Hint: you can make extra batter to freeze and save for later. When you’re ready to use it, simply let thaw at room temperature until it’s a pourable batter again. Uttapam falls in the same family as idli and dosa, two more classic South Indian dishes, all of which use similar rice + urad dal batter. The main difference is the cooking method. While idli is steamed, dosa (thin and crispy) and uttapam (pancake-like) are pan fried. All three can be served with coconut chutney, sambhar, or even potato masala. So, one batter = three dishes, whether you choose to make it from scratch or buy instant mix. This time around, give the veggie-filled uttapam a try, it’s packed with flavor and nutrients and sure to be a family favorite. Special thanks to Amma (Charu Shukla)

Ingredients Directions

1 Cup urad dal (aka split and husked black gram)

3 cups long grain white rice

Option: replace the above ingredients with 1 cup rava (instant idli mix)

2 tbsp yogurt (aka dahi)

1 tsp methi (fenugreek seeds)

Eno (fruit salt)

Choice of finely chopped veggies, here is what we used:

1-2 Roma tomatoes

½ small red onion

1 small carrot

½ cup cilantro

Optional: 1 small green chili (for spice)

For Batter:

Servings: 3 - 4 people

Prep Time: 16 hours (or use instant mix) Cook Time: 20 minutes

Soak and prep ingredients. Start by rinsing the urad dal 2-3 times and rice at least once, combine both in a bowl and soak in clean water for at least 5-6 hrs.

After 6 hours, pour out water and add the dal + rice mix to a blender, along with 2-3 tbsp of yogurt and ¾ tsp salt. Blend until well combined, if too thick add in a bit of water until you get a pancake batter consistency.

Add batter to a bowl and mix in methi seeds. Cover and let ferment at room temperature for another 7-8 hours. Hint: if methi seeds have not dissolved into the batter, add the mix back into blender and blend until smooth.

OPTIONAL: For a quicker version of the batter, combine 1 cup of rava (aka sooji or instant idli mix) with 2 tbsp yogurt and salt in a blender and mix until you achieve a pancake-like batter, adding water as needed. Let rest for at least 20 minutes.

Making the Uttapam:

- Prep your veggies of choice. Ensure each ingredient is finely chopped, including the cilantro, and set aside. Hint: if you like a bit of spice, add in diced green chili.

- Start with ½ cup batter, mix in a pinch of Eno and ½ tsp water, stir until well combined. Topping option 1: here you can mix in a portion of the chopped veggies to the ½ cup of prepped batter.

- Next, add a bit of oil to a skillet on medium heat and ladle the ½ cup prepped batter onto the center. -Spread in a circular motion until a round pancake is formed, sprinkle a bit more oil on top and around the edges. Cover and let cook for about 2 mins, or until bubbles begin to form.

- Topping option 2: instead of pre-mixing the portion of veggies into the batter, you can choose to spread them on top of the batter once added to the skillet.

- Once the bottom portion is golden- flip, cover, and let cook for another 2 mins, until cooked all the way through. Repeat steps 2-4 for the remaining batter, evenly dividing the veggies between each ½ cup batter. Serve warm with coconut chutney or favorite sauce.

NC State Board of Elections Recognizes No Labels as a Political Party

The State Board of Elections in Mid-August voted to recognize the No Labels Party as an official political party in North Carolina.

Recognition of No Labels means voters now have another choice of party affiliation when registering to vote or updating their registration. Voters may register with the Democratic, Green, Libertarian, No Labels, or Republican parties, or they can register as unaffiliated.

The State Board found that No Labels received 14,837 valid signatures from registered N.C. voters, 932 over the required 13,865 signatures, on its petition to become a political party. The signatures were verified by the county boards of elections of the counties in which they were collected. No Labels also received at least 200 signatures from three different congressional districts, another requirement.

The State Board meeting was held in Concord, as part of the Summer 2023 Elections Conference. This conference brings together State Board staff, county election directors and staff, and hundreds of county boards of elections members for training on important election administration issues.

Voters currently registered with a different political party or as unaffiliated may switch their affiliation to No Labels if they wish. For information on how to do that, visit Ncsbe.gov and search for updating registration.

The State Board is updating voter registration forms to include the No Labels option. Until then, voters may register with No Labels by checking the “Other” box and writing “No Labels” on the line in the “Political Party Affiliation” section of the voter registration application. Updates to party affiliation options available through the Division of Motor Vehicles’ online registration portal will be made as soon as possible.

State Board voter data will be updated to include No Labels registrants as soon as possible.

Revision to Photo ID Exception Form for In-person Voting

The State Board also voted unanimously to revise the Photo ID Exception Form by removing the reason, “I did not know photo ID was required for voting,” from the form. Voters can fill out the Photo ID Exception Form when they have a permitted exception to the photo ID requirements. Exceptions permitted by law include, among other things, that something prevents a voter from showing a photo ID when they vote, such as lack of transportation, disability or illness, work schedule, family responsibilities, lack of documents to obtain a photo ID, the photo ID was lost or stolen, or the photo ID has not yet been received. Voters unable to present a photo ID may also explain their reason in an “Other” option on the form.

Voters will be asked to show photo ID when voting in North Carolina, starting with the municipal elections this fall.

All voters will be able to vote with or without an ID. If a voter casting a ballot at the voting site does not provide an acceptable ID, the voter may fill out a Photo ID Exception Form and vote a provisional ballot, or vote a provisional ballot and bring an acceptable ID to the county board of elections office by the day before the county canvass (which is typically 10 days after elections in even-numbered years and seven days after elections in oddnumbered years).

Voters who vote by mail will be asked to include a photocopy of an acceptable ID with their ballot or complete a Photo ID Exception Form for Absentee Voting. The photocopy will be mailed in a special envelope to protect the voter’s personal information on their ID.

Arthur Ryder, a professor of Sanskrit at the University of California, Berkeley, had translated the verse as “Death am I, and my present task Destruction.”

Beyond the sex squabble, the biopic can be a good starting point to understand how Oppenheimer’s deep knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita and other Sanskrit texts helped him with his assignment in New Mexico. It can also be a catalyst for the public to have some hard conversations about weapons of mass destruction.

Wisdom of the Gita and the Panchatantra

As an undergraduate at Harvard University, Oppenheimer read Hindu texts in translation, but at Berkeley, he learned Sanskrit from Ryder, meeting in his teacher’s home on long winter evenings. On Oct. 7, 1933, he wrote to his brother Frank that he had been reading the Gita with two other Sanskritists.

This text was special to Oppenheimer, more than other books. He called it “the most beautiful philosophical song existing in any known tongue,” and he gave copies to friends. When talking at a memorial service for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he quoted his own translation of Bhagavad Gita 17:3, “Man is a creature whose substance is faith. What his faith is, he is.”

Oppenheimer’s reaction, when he looked at the mighty explosion, seems to be close to what the German theologian Rudolf Otto called “numinous” – a combination of awe and fascination at this majesty. His reaction was to think of the Bhagavad Gita’s verse 11:12: “If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one.”

Oppenheimer also read many other Sanskrit texts, including the fifth-century Sanskrit poet Kalidasa’s “Cloud Messenger,” or “Meghaduta,” and his letters show familiarity with “The Three Hundred Poems of Moral Values,” or the “Satakatrayam,” a work from the sixth century C.E. From his quoting the text in many contexts, he seems to have been fond of the Panchatantra, a text of animal fables with pragmatic morals. Ryder, Oppenheimer’s Sanskrit mentor, had also translated this book of charming stories with sometimes cynical messages.

Oppenheimer’s familiarity with the Panchatantra is also evident in the naming of his new car Garuda, after the eaglevehicle of Lord Vishnu. He explained the name to his brother, not with the bird’s well-known connection with Vishnu, but by alluding to a lesser-known story from the Panchatantra, in which a carpenter makes a wooden flying vehicle shaped like the mythical Garuda for his friend.

Oppenheimer loved a Sanskrit epigram from the Panchatantra: “Scholarship is less than sense, therefore seek intelligence.” The line is a rueful reflection at the end of a story in which four men go to seek their fortune.

Three of them were learned scholars who held the fourth in low esteem. On their path, they came across some bones. On seeing those, the first, believing the bones to be of a lion, said that he could put the skeleton together. The second said he would the graft skin and flesh on it, and the third said he would make it come to life. The fourth – believed to be the

less learned person – warned them against it. However, when they insisted on going ahead, he asked them to wait until he could climb a tree for safety. The lion came to life and devoured the three scholars.

Oppenheimer used the Sanskrit verse that followed this story often. From the Gita, he learned and rationalized that it was his duty to build the bomb, and it was the leaders’ duty to use it wisely. In other words, Oppenheimer went along with government decisions not because they were government decisions but because he thought political decision-making was the duty of government leaders, not scientists.

A missing discussion

It is hard to know director Christopher Nolan’s motivation for juxtaposing the Gita verse with an intimate scene – it could be creative license or simply Orientalism, or the West’s stereotypical description of the East. Given Oppenheimer’s deep love for the Bhagavad Gita, he would not have, I believe, quoted the text with disrespect.

As for the Hindus who are offended, there could be multiple reasons: It could be the centuries of a colonial gaze that was fascinated with and horrified by the erotic in Indian spirituality.

For example, the 10th-century temples of Khajuraho –where only about 10 percent of the sculptures are erotic –and texts like the Kamasutra informed early missionary views on Hinduism. It could also be that some Hindus valorize the spirit of renunciation and the ascetic impulse of some Hindu texts.

But beyond this controversy, this film offers an opportunity to reflect on more profound issues. The detonation of atomic bombs led to the death of possibly 200,000 people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and horrific effects on survivors. Kai Bird, coauthor of the book on which the biopic Oppenheimer is based, said that he hopes the film “will initiate a national conversation not only about our existential relationship to weapons of mass destruction but also the need in our society for scientists as public intellectuals.”

While that would be valuable, an important discussion, left out from the narrative, is about the ethics of American leaders who knowingly caused harm at the time. The atomic test explosion led to devastating health consequences for about 13,000 New Mexicans who lived within a 50-mile radius and were not warned beforehand or afterward. This exposure to radioactive material took a toll over several generations.

In the end, the lesson is that the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita have to be balanced with the pragmatic lessons of the Panchatantra. Despite Oppenheimer’s quoting the Panchatantra about common sense being more important than intellectual scholarship, his own interpretation of duty gave undue credit and power to political leaders.

With the atomic explosion in New Mexico, the lion from the Panchatantra story that Oppenheimer cautioned about did come to life, and some may say it lives in a straw cage.

I had a friend in a short story writing class who developed a fantasy world and characters solely using ChatGPT’s brain. The plot sounded like every Indiana Jones movie in it and the story had no special “spark” that distinguished him from any other writer. He described his work as “macaroni and cheese without the cheese”. The teacher never figured out that the work he wrote didn’t belong to him, but that didn’t matter.

At the end of the camp, unlike every writer, he didn’t have a piece to take home that he was proud of. Facing writer’s block and every battle that comes with creativity would have given him more satisfaction than kicking his feet up and not doing any work.

The big question is, how can we use AI to encourage learning rather than to avoid learning? My friend found the answer to this question by developing the website, “DeAP Learning” that allows high schoolers to ask any questions about an AP social studies subject.

The unique thing about this website is that the bot is programmed to answer questions using the knowledge of Steve Heimler. His YouTube channel, “Heimler’s History” saved me and my friends from hours of reading boring textbooks to study for the AP exam.

His videos use humor and filter out extraneous information that isn’t necessary to ace the dreadful AP World exam.

The night before the exam while I was cramming the bajillion time periods from the syllabus, it hit me that I didn’t know how to write a DBQ (document based question).

It was one of the hardest and most important essay questions on the exam to score points on. I pulled up “DeAP Learning” to ask the bot to write me an example of a DBQ on the time period that I was struggling to understand.

It was a much quicker alternative than watching a 15minute YouTube video of someone explaining how to write a DBQ using general, obvious tips. I was able to ask a history expert for real-time feedback on the area I was specifically struggling in, using AI’s help.

AI should only be used for this purpose in classrooms. It should give students the tools to invent rather than being the inventor.

Students should feel empowered to use their own minds. Just because AI is designed to catch mistakes more often than our minds, does not mean that AI is smarter than us. We should put in place clear boundaries for how much we use AI in an educational setting. If used the right way, AI will give us the learning devices to create our own, original product.

This essay would turn out very differently if ChatGPT wrote it because it wouldn’t have a personalized touch that would lead my friends to say, “Oh yeah, Sereena definitely wrote this!”.

Long-grain rice has a firm, dry texture, and stays separate after cooking. Basmati and Jasmine rice are common varieties of long-grain rice.

Medium-grain rice has a tender, moist texture, and grains stick to each other when cooked. Valencia rice is a common variety of medium-grain rice.

Short-grain rice has a tender, soft texture, and it is stickier than medium-grain rice. Arborio and sushi rice (short grain rice originated from Japan) are common varieties of shortgrain rice.

Nutritional benefits of rice

All varieties of rice first grow in the paddy fields as brown rice. Each whole grain of brown rice has three parts - the bran, the germ, and the endosperm.

Brown rice contains important nutrients such as fiber, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamins B1, B3 and B6.

White rice is the middle endosperm after the germ and bran has been removed. White rice is mostly starch.

Rice is one of the easiest to digest grains. Rice is naturally gluten-free and can be eaten safely from babies to elderly people without causing gas, bloating, or digestive issues. While brown rice may have more nutrients, white rice can also be part of a healthy diet.

Rice is a rich source of carbohydrates. We need carbohydrates as they are our main source of energy. There are other varieties of rice such as black rice, red rice, and wild rice. Wild rice is technically not rice but a type of grass. The darker colored rice varieties are richer in antioxidants.

There are many whole grains that can be consumed such as whole grain wheat, and other gluten-free grains such as quinoa, millet/bajra, sorghum (jowar) etc. However, that does not mean that we should give up on rice completely. No matter which grains you choose to eat, you must be mindful of amount and portion sizes. If eaten in moderation as part of a balanced plate, rice can be consumed whether you have diabetes or you want to lose weight.

Rice has been such as integral part of our cultural diet, that avoiding it may cause you to feel deprived. Food is our fuel and should never make us feel guilty or deprived. There is nothing more comforting than having a serving of piping hot daal rice to satisfy the body and mind at the end of a busy day.

To summarize, rice is a staple food in many countries around the world and has been so for thousands of years. It is an important and nutritious grain that feeds more than half of the world’s population. Rice should be included as part of a balanced diet. Well, except when there is a shortage. Go ahead and try other grains as well, but do not villainize rice.

NASA Challenges Students to Fly Earth and Space Experiments

Experiment ideas must be submitted no later than October 20, 2023.

NASA is calling on middle and high school students across the country to submit experiment ideas for a high-altitude balloon or rocketpowered lander test flight in the third TechRise Student Challenge.

TechRise is open to students in grades six to 12 attending U.S. public, private, or charter schools – including those in U.S. territories. It offers participants hands-on insight into the payload design and suborbital flight test process, with the goal of inspiring a deeper understanding of space exploration, Earth observation, coding, electronics, and the value of test data.

“NASA’s TechRise Student Challenge is one of the many exciting ways we’re engaging with the Artemis Generation,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “The process of designing flight experiment proposals encourages students to think big and realize that their talents and creativity will be key in the future of humanity’s exploration.”

Managed by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program and administered by Future Engineers, the challenge invites teams of four or more students, under the guidance of an educator, to design science and technology experiments for

suborbital flight. Sixty winning teams will be selected to turn their proposed experiment ideas into reality. Winners will receive $1,500 to build their experiments, a 3D printed flight box in which to build it, and an assigned spot for their payload on a NASA-sponsored flight test. Experiment ideas must be submitted no later than October 20, 2023.

This year, TechRise entrants will propose to fly with one of two commercial flight platforms: a high-altitude balloon operated by World View of Tucson, Arizona, or the Xodiac suborbital rocket-powered lander operated by Astrobotic of Pittsburgh.

The high-altitude balloon will provide approximately four hours of flight time at 70,000 feet (21,000 meters) with exposure to Earth’s upper atmosphere, high-altitude radiation, and perspective views of Earth, while the lander will fly for approximately two minutes at an altitude of 80 feet (approximately 25 meters) over a test field designed to simulate the Moon’s surface.

NASA encourages students and their instructors to submit experiment ideas even if they have no prior experience with these activities. A wide variety of resources are available to support teams through the submission process, including two upcoming virtual educator workshops and a virtual field trip. Winning teams will receive technical support and mentorship from Future Engineers, who will help students learn the skills they need to turn their experiment idea into reality.

“TechRise was an amazing STEM experience for my students,” said Gregory Tucker, educator lead for the TechRise team at Nesbitt Discovery Academy in Asheville, North Carolina, a winner of the second TechRise challenge. “It was wonderful to see the excitement in the group when the final test was complete, all sensors and data collection were working correctly, and our experiment was ready for launch. The confidence and pride that these students gained over the months working on this project was immeasurable.” The Nesbitt Discovery Academy team’s experiment recently flew on a high-altitude balloon.

To enter the competition, teams will propose their experiment idea online using the design guidelines and proposal template on the competition site. Winners will be announced in January 2024. The selected student teams will build their payloads from January to May, and the final experiments will take flight in summer 2024.

The NASA TechRise Challenge is led by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program, which rapidly demonstrates technologies for space exploration and the expansion of space commerce through suborbital testing with industry flight providers. Flight Opportunities is based at the agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, and is part of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). TechRise is also supported by the NASA Tournament Lab, part of STMD’s Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing program.

expanded their Medicaid safety net through the Affordable Care Act. (North Carolina expanded Medicaid only this year.) The North Carolina state treasurer released the new report as a growing number of states, including North Carolina, are working to expand protections for patients, often in the face of hospital industry lobbying.

“It’s just another example of hospitals putting profits ahead of patients. It’s like an onion. The more you peel it back, the more you cry,” said Treasurer Dale Folwell, a Republican who for years has challenged hospital pricing and debt collection practices. “They should stop breaking people’s kneecaps to collect these debts.”

Atrium and other large tax-exempt health systems are under scrutiny amid mounting evidence that many aren’t providing adequate financial assistance to low-income patients and are leaving people who should qualify for aid with big bills.

The new report, based on an analysis of 5½ years of court records from 2017 to 2022, identified 5,922 debt collection lawsuits that targeted more than 7,500 patients and their family members.

The suits generated more than $57 million in judgments for the hospitals, researchers found, including millions of dollars in interest charges and other fees assessed against patients and their families.

North Carolina law allows hospitals to charge 8% annual interest on outstanding debts, which added tens of thousands of dollars to some families’ debts over the years, the researchers found. Overall, interest accounted for almost a third of the total judgments recorded in the debt cases.

The report also noted that the lawsuits undermine the financial security of generations of North Carolinians. Hospitals can pursue family members for a patient’s medical debt, and property liens sap the value of a home, even after a patient dies. “These lawsuits can thus target a family’s primary source of equity for surviving spouses and children,” the authors wrote. “Medical debt can fuel an intergenerational cycle of poverty.”

Researchers found that the most aggressive debt collector was Atrium, a medical system with roots as a public hospital in Charlotte that, following a merger last year with Midwest-based Advocate Aurora, is now a multistate colossus with $27 billion in annual revenue. Atrium filed almost 2,500 lawsuits against patients from Jan. 1, 2017, to June 30, 2022.

Atrium also pushes patients who can’t afford medical bills into loans from private equity-backed lender AccessOne that can come with interest rates as high as 13%, a KFF Health News investigation found last year.

Atrium declined to address questions about the lawsuits on the record or to make chief executive Eugene Woods available to discuss its debt collection practices.

The second-most litigious system is much smaller. CaroMont Health in Gastonia, North Carolina, a small city about 20 miles west of Charlotte, operates just one inpatient

Free filing, especially for low income and indigent people was available but not well serviced and was rather frustrating. It is being revisited by IRS. The program they have, at the moment, is free-file program in partnership with return preparation companies but there are plenty of problems and it is anemic, not simple enough to use quickly. The number of tax prep firms that sign up for such service has dwindled and alleged deceptive actions of some firms don’t help. All this and more has inspired IRS to ponder its own e-filing option; a digital direct-file tool that is mobile, friendly and multilingual. It remains to be seen how useful and friendly this tool would be, but I must say IRS is on a right path if it succeeds.

dance forms. In the south, the spirit of resurgence led to the saving of Bharatha Natyam, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, and Mohiniattam. In the North, Kathak was revived, and in the Northeast, Manipuri. The pioneering gurus, dancers, and critics of the early twentieth century played a major role in helping save these dance forms.

After independence, several dance institutions and individuals took on the responsibility of serving the arts. The government by not interfering with the creative process established an atmosphere where dance forms could be nurtured.

By the end of the twentieth century, not only were these classical forms of dances fully revived and thriving, but the new generation of dancers were also looking at the latest trends and modernizing their traditions.

Even now, during these times of instant gratification, classical dances still help many young dancers replenish their inner selves. The confidence, beauty of self-respect and pride I see in my students by the time they complete arangetram (dance graduation) is irreversible. The gift of dancing given to me by my parents is now being passed on to the incoming generations. I see many of my students proudly presenting their talents beyond high school. Due to this dedication of both students and parents, we celebrated 20th anniversary of Dances of India this year and my dance academy completed its 83rd arangetram.

Just like humans, these beautiful classical dances have gone through many hardships and still survived. I applaud my gurus, organizations, and publications like Saathee magazine that are providing means to keep these dance forms alive, allowing us to replenish our inner selves through dance.

in future pieces. Established third parties are still there, lurking in the shadows, but remain, for all practical purposes, irrelevant.

I have worked as an Election Poll worker for many years. It’s a thankless job, but I feel I must contribute to help our election processes continue unabated. Election doubters and deniers try to denigrate these processes, but as the 2022 midterm elections proved, they do this in futile, self-serving manner. There were warnings of violence and disturbances at polls. They didn’t happen. The reality is that our democratic and electoral processes are time honored, time honed and worth fighting for. They work. Sure, there will be some errors and attempts at fraud, but these things are generally caught and dealt with.

The process has evolved and worked for many decades while so many people of all political persuasions work during elections to help make them transparent and fair. Our Democracy is messy, as is the nature of such systems, and partisans are constantly trying to undress and redress it in their ideologies, but our elections remain fair. Partisans also try to strip bare and undermine our democratic institutions. They continually fail.

The political involvement and influence of Indian Americans continues to grow. Many are now running for office, even for the highest office in the land. These numbers will only get larger, in all political spheres - local, regional, and national. The Indian American population is about one percent of the US population but now wields outsized economic and educational influence. In time, slowly but surely, political influence.

The American political season is brewing and is now off to the races. India will also hold national elections next year when Prime Minister Modi will be seeking a third term. The two most prominent democracies will enable citizens to exercise their duties in massive elections in 2024.

The American presidential fight is going to be ugly, as will be many other regional, statewide, and national races, posing a continuing challenge for our democracy, but the extreme partisans will only get so far, because the quiet masses will work to keep things moving. Will it be a rematch between Biden and Trump? Don’t write that book just yet. It is still early and anything can happen, especially on the Republican side.

India’s elections will also be loud and boisterous.

On the regional front, there are primaries in September at a few cities in North Carolina for the 2023 municipal and local elections, which will take place in early November of this year. This will accelerate the maneuverings that have already begun for the big prize next year. The breeze has been blowing steadily and now the winds are arriving. Like it or not, it’s off to the political races. How will you dress for the occasions?

I am eager to move to that stage so that I can work on projects that have been on the back burner and for little pleasures such as dropping the filter of niceness and telling a few folks exactly what I think of them. Like sweet Southern ladies, I could make the most caustic remarks with a smile and slyly add, “bless your heart” to soften the blow.

Truth be told, I am fully aware that there will be difficulties. My knees may be less forgiving after a day of hiking and my doctor may ban puri and mithai from my diet. However, peeling away the superficial changes around me, I am determined to face my fears and look for meaningful ways to value the last quarter of my life.

All the praise about looks that feed vanity in youth can make the acceptance of wrinkles and cellulite much harder. Not that I am speaking from personal experience, but it has been found that glamorous men and women struggle the most with signs of aging as their self-esteem dwindles when compliments taper down.

A favorite grandparent, your kind neighbor, a silver haired teacher may be senior citizens who are admired but age-related prejudice and attitude often comes in the way of offering the elderly the respect, worth, and opportunities they deserve.

Globally, people need to reevaluate their attitude towards the geriatric population especially because that segment is growing in most countries. According to the US Census data released in 2020, the 65-and-older population grew by over a third (34.2 percent or 13,787,044) during the past decade, and by 3.2 percent (1,688,924) from the period between 2018 to 2019.

Businesses need to pay attention to the changes in the customer base.

Scientists can aim to generate innovations targeting the needs of this oft forgotten demographic. And let’s make some noise as we celebrate National Senior Citizen Day every year.

It is my sincere belief that welcoming the golden years with open arms will enable us to thrive with our changing bodies and mind.

Instead of stigmatizing the stage of menopause, it should be openly discussed with the goal of gaining a better understanding. Similarly, dysfunctions experienced by men should not be treated as material for raucous jokes attacking masculinity. Experts in the field of gerontology agree that cultures and communities who respect their older members tend to have healthier seniors.

Our scriptures as well as history around the world offer exemplary role models of who guide us with their wisdom and leadership.

We have ample reason to change our attitudes towards the elderly for the betterment of society. And regardless of party affiliation Americans can seek comfort in knowing that their country can be run by, how shall I put it, well-aged Presidents.

CaroMont declined to make chief executive Chris Peek available for an interview, but a spokesperson said the system only rarely sues. “We take seriously our obligation to partner with patients in all aspects of medical care and service, and we always try to resolve these matters with compassion,” Meghan Berney said in a statement.

In contrast to Atrium and CaroMont, some North Carolina hospitals filed only one or two lawsuits against their patients from 2017 to 2022, the researchers, led by Duke law professor Barak Richman, found.

Similar analyses of court records in Wisconsin, New York, Maryland, and other states in recent years have uncovered extensive use of the court system by hospitals. And KFF Health News found last year that more than twothirds of U.S. hospitals sue patients or take other legal action against them, such as garnishing wages or placing liens on property. That analysis was based on an investigation of a sample of more than 500 hospitals nationwide.

The attention on these debt collection activities has helped catalyze state efforts to expand protections for patients. Several states, including Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, and New York, have enacted medical debt laws in recent years.

In North Carolina, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers have been pushing legislation that would restrict some collection activities by hospitals, including capping interest rates that medical providers could charge on patient debt and limiting collections against family members. Earlier this year, the state Senate unanimously passed the bill, called the Medical Debt De-Weaponization Act.

But the bill has stalled in the House amid opposition from the state’s powerful hospital industry, whose political action committee has made more than $260,000 in campaign contributions since 2022, according to WBTV, the CBS affiliate in Charlotte. Among the biggest beneficiaries of hospital industry largesse is the speaker of the North Carolina House, Republican Tim Moore, the station reported. Moore’s office did not respond to inquiries from KFF Health News.

attorneys charging steep legal fees. February and March were often the immigration equivalent of tax season for accountants with attorneys and legal assistants alike constructing huge applications and mailing them via FEDEX on a given date all in the hopes if an application being selected for processing by USCIS.

These huge applications were then inputted into the USCIS electronic system by hand upon receipt, which often took weeks of time and a small army of employees to complete. By the mid-2010s, USCIS was regularly hitting its 85,000 numerical limit on the first day of available submissions. Each received application was issued a unique ID number and USCIS conducted a lottery-style selection process to determine which petitions would be adjudicated and which would be returned to the sender.

In 2021, USCIS released a new filing system by which employers seeking to hire new H-1B workers could simply submit their sponsorship requests electronically by inputting on basic data about the employer and employee into a USCIS online portal. This filing system would replace the hundreds of pages needed for the old paper-based applications and would not require employers to pay thousands of dollars in legal and government fees for the hope of selection in the H-1B Cap.

Instead, employers would now simply need to submit a government fee of $10 per employee, which was a substantial reduction from the old system whereupon employers needed to submit all fees with the paper application, which ranged from $1710 - $2460. By streamlining the process, efficiency would increase and paperwork costs for employers and USCIS would plummet (the only real losers were the attorneys!). Employers submitting multiple registrations for a single employee would be penalized and that employee would be deemed ineligible for H-1B selection or approval.

Sadly, recent data shows that no good idea goes unpunished with incidents of fraudulent H-1B lottery submissions skyrocketing. According to USCIS data, the total number of submitted cap registrations in 2021 was 274,237 with 28,125 being deemed multiple filings for the same individual (presumably filings by multiple companies on behalf of a single individual). In 2022, USCIS received 308,613 registrations with 90,143 determined as multiple filings.

The problem has become a full-blown crisis this year with the FY2024 lottery showing the total number of registrations to be an astounding 780,884 submissions (remember, this is for 85,000 available visas). Of these submissions, USCIS determined that 408,891 were eligible registrations for individuals with multiple registrations.

This crush of filings has raised the likely specter that fraud has sprouted into the H-1B filing system with multiple “companies” being created solely for the purpose of submitting H-1B registrations on behalf of desperate H-1B workers. The $10 government filing fee has made the barrier-to-entry for such unscrupulous filers virtually nil, making individuals willing to challenge the system’s ability to catch them. While USCIS has indicated that it believes

that their “investigations are having an impact”, the numbers tell a different story altogether.

While a return to the previous paper-based filing system is not feasible (or wise), the current system incentivizes applicants to reach out to as many employers as possible to secure an H-1B cap filing, to increase their overall chances of selection. The true resolution lies in the obvious Congressional action of increasing the number of available H-1B visas each year. The current number of available H1Bs are woefully deficient compared to what our economy demands; simply stated, we don’t live in a 1990s economy and, therefore, continue to starve employers of highly skilled workers which stunts the ability of the economy to grow and remain dynamic. As with virtually all immigration issues, our elected leaders in Washington D.C. are the key to solving the root cause of the problem, but until consensus is reached, expect this problem to continue to grow in front of our eyes as each year passes.

The clear beneficiary will be cyclicals. We started to witness that this month, with energy rallying 8 percent, materials 3.5 percent, and industrials 3 percent. Steel stocks hit their highest level in 12-years. The market internals are sending a message.

Cyclicals will benefit from both increased long positioning and short covering. Many single names have double-digit short positioning and are subject to significant short squeezes on marginally good news. Energy looks particularly interesting right now.

It is the cheapest sector in the market, has the highest dividend yield, has among the highest capital return in the market, while generating the most cash. With oil prices rallying, upward earnings revisions seem likely.

Long positioning in energy is low, while short positioning is high. It is likely that as the year progresses, we will start to see a significant supply / demand imbalance in oil. An additional tailwind for oil will come from a weaker dollar.

From a technical perspective, the energy sector just moved above both its 50D and 200D. It is on the verge of a golden cross and there is a positive divergence in place.

Finally, the real kryptonite for tech companies is inflation, and energy companies are probably the best inflation hedge.

Looking forward the market will focus on the Fed’s Jackson Hole gathering, earnings, and the economic data.

Whether our conscious minds are aware or not, there is a naturebestowed intelligence under the surface that keeps our feet at least partially planted in the real universe. Even as our conscious “intelligence” does its artwork with logic, language, words and other creative fabrications spun up by our imaginative minds.

Is this parallel universe – our Uniferse – a blessing or a curse?

As with many other things, it depends. It depends on how this internal simulation engine is used – whether as a useful adjunct to the real universe, and subordinate to it, or as a substitute that attempts to displace and exile the real thing into oblivion. There is a worst-case scenario too: it may also be possible to combine the two parallel universes in a manner that is potentially highly destructive. Like a horror story that you write but are compelled by unknown forces to live inside your creation.

Destruction; and a path to its destruction

Destruction may be the outcome if powerful forces of nature are unleashed in realms carved out by your imagination. For example, the ability to feel an intense sense of fear is bestowed upon us from birth, by nature. Fear has the power to keep us alive in the face of real dangers that are present in the real universe. However, when that same fear is unleashed in all its fury against an imaginary foe, it can result in immense harm to oneself and to others and, to the universe.

Imagination, unbridled, can lead us to strange places, as it did to Alice in a Wonderland where everything sane was insane, and everything crazy was the way to be.

It can be worse than that, though. Our imagination may not even be our own! Human beings copy the products of other human beings’ imagination. We can end up using the vocabulary, cause-effect logic patterns and the word play that have been established by others – both living and dead – over decades and centuries. We may have copied these constructs thoughtlessly and made them part of the fabric of our existence. We may also not have the benefit of the child who dared to proclaim that the proud emperor was draped in a fabric that had no fabric. And so, we keep marching on, unaware of what we do.

So, the curse may not be just that we are doomed to live with one foot in the universe and the other in our Uniferse. It may be that we don’t even spin our own uniferses; others may. The first step, therefore, to undoing the curse is to tune in to where each foot is planted, and to what degree. The next step would be to understand what part of your Uniferse is spun by you versus someone else.

The universe waits, eternally patient, for you. Will you embrace it in all its splendor?

I went to a recent convention, which catered to a wide variety of artists including actors and writers, it was such a surprise to see not only an outpouring of support for the strike, but also compassion between the fans and the guests who (because of obligations to Screen Actors Guild) could not mention the very properties (films, TV shows) each was there to celebrate.

It was heartwarming to see such appreciation for their craft and the creative ways each Q & A panel was handled. TV and movies could not be discussed, but voice performances, theater, and documentaries were still on the table.

As we all know, sci-fi & fantasy fans can truly be some of the most amazing and welcoming people out there, though as with all fan communities there are bad eggs out there (you know who you are).

As for the ever-growing fear of AI duplicating likenesses, voices, and movements of actors… well we’ve seen some of that already with the ‘de-aging’ process of actors for flashback scenes in higher budget projects. What’s to stop those same companies from using that data later without the consent of the performer?

Disney, in particular, had to place a clause in their contracts for their performers to offer permission to their likeness and voice for various pieces of merchandise. This was due (in part) to an incident where they used Robin Williams’ Genie character in certain marketing materials without his consent.

This led to some considerable bad blood between him and the studio which was never truly settled even upon his passing.

Voice actors went on strike themselves a few years ago just to fight this very eventuality. In the end, it was decided that all voice work is owned strictly by the actor themself. Any use of their voice for other projects must be approved by the performer beforehand. This (as I’ve recently discovered) includes any added lines to games by fans which were not originally recorded.

I’m not quite sure if this also applies to performance capture as the technology is still relatively new, but it also involves voice work to a large degree. Perhaps that’s a bit of a grey area for the time being even though a large portion of it is voice work.

Currently the South Asian entertainment industry has been unaffected by AI, but who’s to say a studio won’t try and use such technology to replicate the late Lata Mangeshkar’s singing for new films? What if they decide to ‘resurrect’ Irrfan Khan for a cameo? Hopefully it won’t ever come to that… but only time will tell.

As of writing this, negotiations between the Writers Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, and the studios they’re striking against have remained at a stalemate.

Hopefully it won’t be too much longer and each of these talented people can go back to doing what we as fans have grown to love.
