Urban Design: Redevelopment of Musi Riverfront Internship at Kham Design, Bangalore

Curriculum Vitae

centre for tribal welfare, wayanad

01

The topic for thesis was chosen due to my affinity towards helping a larger section of the society who needs to be lifted up and brought out to the society. If architecture could be the reason for a successful welfare program, it is definitely worth to take it up. I tried to realize my passion of helping the needy through architecture. The case studies were done in and around the chosen site itself and the subject of study was concentrated on the site and the settlement around it. The USERS-CONTEXT-SPACE relation was critically looked at, before arriving at the SPACE REQUIREMENTS. Parallel lines were drawn and the characters were looked out for, finally arriving at a CONCEPT which complimented the space and acted as a value addition to the welfare unit.

The concept was arrived at, by drawing parallels and choosing a relative subject which satisfied the characters well.

WEAVER BIRD’S NEST The nurturing power of a bird’s nest is the one that is focused on the most. The physical and functional characters of a nest has been reflected on the space including the materials, the play of light and the feel of the spaces inside. The cradle to cradle concept has been thought of while choosing the materials. The materials in and around the site are used which can blend in with the surroundings and degrade into nature itself. The most important factor is to make the tribals feel at home.

Centre for tribal welfare, Wayanad The intention of this thesis is to create an architectural interface between the tribal and rural society where the centre will function as the platform where the tribals will meet the rest of the society and learn and grow together. The centre will function as the tribals’ centre and will convey a strong sense of belonging to them. This centre will be one of its kinds where the tribals will work for their own interest and will come out of their trance of just being able to accept the help they are offered. The spaces in the centre will add on or compliment the activities and will increase the efficacy of the spaces. The design approach is towards inviting in a lot of nature and creating semi open spaces to merge the surroundings. The Paniyas are the indigenous inhabitants of the forests of Wayanad. The spaces inside will provide a feeling of being inside the forest as the mud walls are balanced by a lot of greenery inside which will create a balance between earth and nature.

Centre for tribal welfare, Wayanad One of the aspects that have been carefully planned in the project is the continuity of spaces. The whole centre functions as a singe unit which works towards the welfare of the Paniya tribes of Wayanad. The activities are planned in such a way that one supports the other and here, it is taken care that the space adds to the efficacy of the activity it holds. Most of the spaces are semi open; which encourages more visual connectivity and avoids any form of secrecy. The centre is a amalgam of spaces that has been carefully selected based on the problems identified, interests and skill of the inhabitants.

urban design

The urban design project taken up during the ninth semester was the redevelopment of a river front. The site selected falls in the historical precinct of the Musi Riverfront of Hyderabad. Different levels of study was carried out before concluding to infer and analyze. The proposals made were with respect to the character of the city and the needs of the residents.

To build a dialogue between the city and the river was the main motive. Development in such a way where the river would not become a backyard was a challenging yet very interesting aspect of the project,

The analytical layers helped in understanding the issues and existing forms in a relative manner. This step helped us produce the most apt proposals at the needed extents. The different layers of the city has been unveiled before coming up with suggestions and proposals that are to provide the residents and the city, a peaceful and interesting riverfront and to build a rapport between the river and the city.

EXCAVATION DRAWING

The practical training period has been one of the most fruitful and exciting phase of the five year course. Being a part of a reputed firm like Kham Design and being able to learn under Ar.Chetan Sivaprasad has been a very thrilling experience. Three projects which included a project from scratch has been handled. Regular site visits, client meetings and stage wise project development was handled.

The housing project was taken up in Tadepalli, Vijayawada. The project is to serve for the urban poor and for all the other income groups. The most challenging aspect is providing maximum comfort in a limited area given constraints like social housing, open areas, dark corners, amenities and related. The project was taken up for a period of three months in a group of four students.

entertainment centre A shopping mall suggests a place where the interiors are lined with retail stores and are anchored by departmental stores. This concept has been tried to be broken. The monotonous lineage has been replaced by introduction of level differences and interesting elements like sculptures and rays made of glass blocks filled with colored oil. The exterior of the mall is enveloped by a shield of aluminum louvers anchored to the mall.

nationalized bank The main constraint of a bank is the safety of activities and the ease of access and circulation. One of the most important sections of a bank is the locker room which has been located on a safe zone. The customer circulation spaces are expansive for comfort and ease of movement.

music & architecture IN SEARCH OF MUSIC IN ARCHITECTURE

16

AIM To understand the patterns of music in architecture and analyze the outstanding similarities.

OBJECTIVE To do a literature study including articles, documents, research papers and books about the context. To study and analyze an existing building or buildings in which the concept is strongly used. To list out the observations, justify them and to prepare inferences.

SCOPE Music as a supplement and language of architecture Music used in ancient civilizations and how it affected architecture through the years Realization of the relation between music and spaces, about how certain genre used to evoke thoughts of certain spaces and how the word ‘spacemusic’ was coined Music of specified genre going hand in hand with certain spaces and strictly only with those spaces: why? Listening to space and music that creates ambience, connects with the ancient tradition whose roots are diverse. Music creates imagery : sound images Music can play with volumes of space, dramatize the space Music as a strong and sole element used to design a lot of unique buildings like Notre Dame The feelings evoked by experiencing spaces can directly be compared to those evoked by particular genre of music In search of patterns of music in architecture: architecture has been influenced by music on a deep scale. Architecture is way too similar to music whereas it also has a lot of standing factors that make each other different. The most important point is raised about perception. Architecture and music are individual experiences. The perspectives are totally dependent on the individual experiencing it. The rhythm can be compared with the harmony or symmetry followed in architecture. The pauses in music, the high pitches, the use of chords and a lot more can be used as comparatives to different techniques and style followed in designs. Ex: Peter Eisenman, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin, 1998-2005. Here, the use of the contrast of light and shadow by huge concrete blocks arranged in an asymmetric pattern and the unexpected and sudden appearance/disappearance of people is compared to a shriek in silence or a sudden blow of a trumpet. Architecture contrasts and so do music: Le Corbusier describes the Parthenon as a massive outburst of a trumpet which spreads its power and dominates for miles around. In contrast, serenity washes over and soft music is experienced when we think of Taj Mahal. The differences also throw light on the similarities of music and architecture. Music as an art developed over time and architecture as an art in space.

LIMITATIONS Comparison and combination of music and architecture: The influence of music on architecture and the effective use of the patterns. The dramatizing effects that can be created in a space with the use of apt genre. This is the synopsis of the seminar which was presented during the tenth semester of B Arch. The seminar paper is not attached.
