BARCODE TECHNOLOGY - WHAT AN AMAZING CONCEPT What connects the real world to the virtual world? The world of barcodes is congruous and well adapted in the recent times. The advent of 2D barcodes technology permits us to, in real time, illustrate everything from URLs to the invoices, which in turn grant us the ability to get a clear understanding of stock levels and purchase requirements. In this article, I will first start with a little history about barcodes, a brief overview of the accessibility of methodologies to create barcodes for products, and the importance of barcodes in real world usage? We all come across barcodes at some point or the other during our day. The tiniest, cutest, and gracefully etched black and white lines that awesomely mark your gift items, books and kitchenware have become ubiquitous in our culture. Slowly and gradually these ‘barcodes on products’ have emerged as symbols of capitalism, ambiguity and government control. Legitimately, the first ever use of barcodes for product identification happened in October 1952 for the tracking of train cars. Then with a huge wait of some 14 years, barcodes caught attention again amongst industrialist and manufacturers, who finally put it for commercial use. Talking in terms of design and how it is constructed let us see the architecture. It is a combination of thick and thin, tiny black and white lines, used to exemplify a series of numbers. For example, on books, these numbers cipher an ISBN, which as a concept have become so successful, that it had to be extended from a 10 to a 13 digit barcode number. Having said this, barcode numbers can be used for any product now, apart from ISBN. The idea appeals all kinds of inventory functions and illustrates the digits, density and merger of those lines describe which digit is to be encoded. Traditionally the barcodes which we used to see were only one-dimensional. That was just because they were scanned, or “read”, in only one direction, and that too horizontally. Now the amazing part is that the recent generation of barcodes is coming up with more complex designs. These new approach barcodes get their identity from the capability to be read from both the sides, both horizontally and vertically. Therefore, more information can be encoded in the same amount of space. Very exhilarating stuff, right? Eventually these tiny looking black and white lines have become links from the real world into the virtual world. There are various ways in which this technology can help you in getting better management solutions for your inventory requirements. Almost every retail chain, product manufacturing and distribution outfit and even library is now using barcode numbers to identify and track product units. You will not believe just how strongly this technology has attached itself to our life in general. There is lot more to be explored about barcode on products in coming future. The internet can provide you with a lot of data about the concept. To know more about online barcodes, visit Sabarcodes.co.za.
