Senior Pastor Jeff Harris received a call Father’s Day evening anyone would dread – Grace Point Church, located at 9650 Huebner Road, which he has led for the past 23 of its 25 years, was on fire. Thankfully, no one was in the building. The subsequent 3-alarm blaze, thought to be caused by an electrical malfunction, rendered the approximately 30,0000 square-foot sanctuary and worship center unusable.
But that did not stop the church. Due in large part to the outpouring of
support from other churches, Harris preached a sermon inspired by Nehemiah 6:3, with a nod to Tom Petty, the very next Sunday in their transformed youth building. “We won’t back down,” Harris said. “What God has called us to do is too important.” His theme included a video clip from Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down” as a rallying cry, he said, noting Petty wrote the song in response to his own home burning. “It’s a paraphrase of Nehemiah 6:3 in a modern way, “ Harris added. Long before the fire, Harris had been actively pursuing relationships with churches across San Antonio. “We’ve been working for a decade to build good rapport for unifying churches in
our city,” Harris said. “We just went through the Believe study with 20 churches in the city, which was an initial example of what unification can look like. “We’ve hosted the Global Leadership Summit for 15 years. We’ve been sowing unity and sowing the Church, and I think God honors that – in some way we’ve been reaping what we sow.” “Because of the Christ Together movement we’re starting – in a weird way, the fire has helped out. We’ve been working on unity in the city - sometimes God answers your prayers in really unique ways - if it needs to be through a fire so be it,” he added. continued on page 2

SA Heals Founders Live, Play and Work with Those They Serve by AMY MORGAN, Beacon Content Director amy@saBeacon.com
“Seek first to understand before to be understood” is a governing motto of Charlie and Jennifer Foltz – as evidenced by their move to not just serve, but live, with the people in one of the city’s most blighted neighborhoods – the Eastside Wheatley area. You know it – the neighborhood you navigate through quickly on your way to a Spurs game, hoping your car doesn’t break down.

The Foltz’ follow their passion to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors building relationships one individual at a time. They personally share – time, food, resources – with their neighbors through their ministry, SA Heals and informal church, The Gate. “For us, SA Heals is the answer to the question in the parable of the Good Samaritan, who is our neighbor? We choose to fight abuse, disease, hunger and poverty one child, one school, one neighborhood at a time. We believe this is done by investing in relationships and loving our neighbor as they heal. …We have chosen to live our lives not only for our neighbors but WITH our neighbors,” the couple states on the SA Heals website. “Our vision is to see God redeem and restore our eastside neighborhood and to inspire others to do the same in neighborhoods across the city.” The tangible aspects of what they do take different forms: Whether it be consistently meeting a child weekly for lunch; inviting a homeless mom to live in their home for a few weeks; taking care of a teen mom’s baby; or sharing Saturday backyard bonfire/cookout/worship gatherings, the root of their commitment is to befriend and genuinely have relationships with people “so they know we are here and we care,” Charlie Foltz said. “We wanted to no longer be an us and them, but a we. What distinguishes us from any other group is that we’re living here.

Our whole idea is to be somebody’s neighbor and to help… not run a program. That’s the heart behind what we started – You never know what one person is going to do or what cycle you are going to break,” Foltz said. Scott Barr, of Southwest Exteriors, met the Foltz’ when SA Heals was nominated for support by the company’s fledgling ministry leadership council. “The objective for the business to be an economic engine to support ministries our team members engage in,” Barr added. He is enthusiastic about SA Heals. “I love the incarnational ministry,” he said. Southwest Exteriors is helping SA
Heals renovate the neighborhood’s longstanding Rec. Center, located at 1212 N. Gevers, which provides a safe place for school-aged kids to eat and hang out in the evening - when the after-school programs close. “It was important we restore the building instead of making it just a tear down,” Foltz said. “It really gives a picture of the gospel of restoration. “We are very committed to taking care of the people of our community and our neighborhood,” he added. WHERE HOPE COMES FROM
3 Reasons You Should Be Happy Salvation is God’s Free Gift to You BY JOSH WILEY
The Bible is clear: salvation or eternal life with God is something God gives you absolutely free. No strings attached. No conditions. This fact completely flies in the face of human nature. After all, we tend to love only those that love us back and always ask for something in return. As hard as it is for many Christians to fully understand God’s free gift of salvation, here are three reasons you should be ecstatic that this is the case.
REAL ESTATE
Value-Added School Scores Don’t Affect Real Estate BY ANDY HENION
A new way of evaluating teachers and schools–called “value-added”–has sparked controversy, but hasn’t shifted property values. Value-added goes deeper than grading schools on student test scores by looking at how teachers and schools as a whole contribute to improvements in the scores. A new study, published in the Journal of Urban Economics, is the first to examine Los Angeles Unified School District. The how housing prices reflect the public newspaper then calculated value-added release of such data. measures for teachers and schools. Reason #1: You don’t have to work for God to consider you righteous enough to be saved. Asking fallen human beings to transform themselves into anything other than fallen beings is like asking a leopard to change its spots. It’s not going to happen. As God said through Jeremiah, we have depraved hearts. There is only wickedness in the fallen human heart. Expecting sinful human hearts to produce righteousness is like expecting apple trees to produce cashew nuts. Not very likely. If this is all there is to the story of salvation, we are doomed. We cannot save ourselves because we don’t have the equipment. Thankfully, God gives us salvation freely out of His grace. Reason #2: God doesn’t owe you anything. As Apostle Paul wrote in Romans, if it were possible for us to do the right things and put in the work to be saved, then God becomes obligated to us. We did our end of the bargain, so he has to perform his end of the deal. This completely contradicts the Bible, its timeline, and internal logic. The fact is, God, soon after Eve and Adam fell, promised that the Son will crush the serpent’s head while the serpent will bite the Son (thereby killing Him). God made the promise without being goaded, pleaded, or petitioned by Adam. Adam just stood there. God made the promise completely on His own. Again, it is a free and voluntary gift. You should rejoice because God’s free gift is due to the fact He loves you unconditionally instead of simply delivering on an obligation. Isn’t that worth getting excited about?
Reason #3: You don’t have to try to make God love you any more than He already does. The parable of the Prodigal Son featured the story of the older brother who was mad at the Father because the older brother felt he ‘slaved’ following his Father’s law with little reward. He was frustrated that the Father lavished blessings on a sinful brother who returned yet he, the one who kept commandments, didn’t get such blessings. Put another way, he ‘slaved’ to deserve the Father’s favor. Well, since ‘we have all fallen short of the glory of God,’ no human (except Christ when he still walked the earth in human form) could say we ‘deserve’ to be saved. All our efforts, as seemingly selfless and good as they may be, are never ‘good enough’ to earn God’s love. God’s love can’t be earned because it is already given freely. How can you ‘slave’ for something you already have? Isn’t that good news? You don’t have to worry about God loving you because he already does. Keep this thought in mind. Be happy that our Father is the way He is. He loves unconditionally and freely and we don’t have to work for His love because it’s already there. We don’t have to make ourselves deserving of His love. He’ll love us anyway. That’s His nature. Isn’t it time you accept that love and let it transform you? Are you ready to make that leap of faith today? Josh Wiley is the CEO and Co-Founder of Telling Ministries.

Care, Hope, and Servant Leadership: The Recipe for Transformed Lives BY LISA CONE
On the west side of San Antonio, thousands are living without necessities like food, shelter, clothing, and employment. For these people, hope often seems hard to find. Thankfully, the Christian Hope Resource Center is making a difference - restoring hope and dignity to those weathering hard times. The center serves more than 4,000 families each month, reconciling relationships, helping adults find employment, feeding the hungry, and supporting each person as they get back on their feet. Like those who come through its doors, The Christian Hope Resource Center (CHRC) has also seen transformation. After more than 20 years of giving food to the poor, the board chose to change their model of assistance. Megan Legacy, Executive Director and C12 Group Member, explains the transformation: “Rather than handing out a monthly food supplement, a case management program was deployed to work with families on an ongoing, one-on-one basis to uncover the root causes of their food insecurity and help them develop a proactive plan to become more self-sufficient,” Megan shared. “Case managers address their needs holistically by assessing health, housing, family relationships, employment status, and educational needs.” This model fosters relationships between CHRC’s staff and those receiving assistance. It allows them to help on a deeper level by connecting people with the right services, and more importantly, pointing them to Christ.
Building Bright Futures One of Megan’s favorite successes is of a young man who came to the CHRC looking for a better life. He had been abandoned by his father and living on the streets since age 13. After overcoming many challenges, he was ready to turn his life around came to CHRC for help. Within six weeks, he created a resume, applied for jobs, attended parenting classes. It wasn’t long before he landed an interview. Javier borrowed a suit and learned how to tie a necktie for the first time in his life. Two hours later, he raced into the CHRC with tears in his eyes; he landed a full-time position with benefits.
Megan Legacy, Executive Director and C12 Group Member
Leaning in for Support and Encouragement Megan credits her ability to lead with knowledge and Christian wisdom to the C12 Group of Central Texas-- a unique peer forum for Christian-minded business leaders and executives who are building greater businesses for a greater purpose. “My C12 peers help me get through those tough days and situations. I can talk openly about issues I am facing and come away with strategies to solve problems through the collective of my peer group. As the Executive Director, Megan constantly experiences situations that pull on her heart. Whether having tough conversations that can lead to conflict, terminating an employee, or leading the center through radical change, Megan knows she needs to be a steadfast leader. Participation in a C12 Group encourages Megan to be courageous and bold in her service - not only to those in need, but to her teammates at the CHRC as well. “So many of the business principles discussed in my C12 Group are applicable to running a non-profit, like hiring, recruiting, marketing, corporate culture, and strategic planning. It has been amazing to learn from different industries and receive objective feedback. When you are a leader you often feel alone, but my C12 Group empowers me. They are real people with real struggles, and it is refreshing to have that common bond,” shared Megan. Lisa Victoria Cone is a staff writer for The C12 Group, America’s fastest growing roundtable for Christian CEOs and owners dedicated to building great business for a greater purpose. She resides in Austin, Texas and provides marketing and communications support for companies nationwide in a variety of industries.

represented your best decision at the time. The choices were what you believed best suited you at that moment. If some of those choices proved to not work well for you, then you adjust them. You find something that fits your needs, your wants, your comfort zone. Your retirement evolves as you do. Would I live the same lifestyle now that I did when I was in my 20’s, playing rock music on the radio, even if I could? Not for a second. Would I want to repeat my 30’s as a new dad. No. Would I have wanted to live in my 40’s the way I am living now? Of course not. Every decade of my life has involved changes in attitudes and decisions. What I
have done along the way did not always have the best results. So, I adjusted or replaced what had been parts of my life with something more in tune with the essential me, and those changes happen over and over again, especially in retirement because I have the freedom to make those changes. I’ve done nothing “wrong” in my retirement, and neither have you. It is just not possible. Scarlett the Movie Debuting in San Antonio
EDUCATION
Preparing Kids For College
BY BEACON STAFF
There is a new movie hitting the big screen September 1st, one to get excited about if you are looking for a quality film with a significant plot. Strong Foundation Films is releasing the movie Scarlett, which is chalked full of talented writing and acting. Before we get to know the movie, it is worth taking a moment to understand more about Strong Foundation Films. Pastor Sun East is a woman of faith, who served the church in Colorado for years. Sun and members of her church moved very recently to San Antonio to be closer to Mexico for mission work, and to have the climate to make movies year round. The first of many movies to come is Scarlett and it certainly is a great movie to start with. The purpose of the film is to send a pro-life message enriched with inspiration and a never-give-up mindset. Scarlett is directed by Josiah Warren, a young and ambitious talent who also stars in the film. He has successfully balanced the life of acting, directing, and managing the cast and crew during the process. Along with Josiah on the screen is Chloe Hurst. Hurst took on the role of Scarlett, a successful architect who finds out she has terminal cancer and is looking for God in the middle of her trial. Stephen Baldwin also has a role in the movie, adding yet another talented member to this production. I sat down with Chloe Hurst, Josiah Warren, and Strong Foundation Films’ CEO, Sun East, to better understand the message and purpose of this production. Chloe, who moved to Hollywood from Australia, described her time during this movie as her “favorite job” in her life so far. That says something, given her recent work with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in the movie The Nice Guys. Something was just different with the production team for Scarlett. Said Hurst, “the team welcomed me into a family that I still call my own today.” When asked what she hoped to see come out of this film, she immediately spoke of its potential. “This movie has the ability to reach
a wide audience. I feel like if we’ve touched only person through watching this, we’ll have done our job. But everyone can relate to this film, each character goes through their own growth, and that is what’s so beautiful about it, and why it should reach a wide audience.” They began each day in prayer, which was unique to this set, and brought the cast and crew together, to set the right tone for the day. Josiah and company brought to the table an entirely new story, amidst today’s constant recreation and regurgitation of storytelling. Joel Cox, known for his work in American Sniper, Million Dollar Baby, and Unforgiven, served as an editor consultant for Scarlett to help bring the film to a top-notch quality. “We are excited to start in San Antonio, but really we would like to get a response in Texas, and the rest of the country.” Josiah gives insight on the reach the movie will hopefully have. Everything was shot in San Antonio and Boerne, truly a homegrown film. As Chloe speaks about her personal growth as an actor and a person, it was easy to see why independent films with a foundation of faith are so important to the cast. This movie will make you think, it will make you feel, and the hope is that we live and act differently after receiving Scarlett’s message. A portion of the proceeds from the movie will go to pro-life causes, such as Life Choices Clinic. San Antonio is fortunate to be the first city to debut the motion picture on September 1st, and plan on holding the largest red carpet movie premiere in the city’s history. So far, you can plan on seeing showings of Scarlett at the Palladium Theatre, Silverado, and Northwest Theatre, open to the public Friday, September 2nd. Stay on the lookout for future movies that Strong Foundation Films will share, and they are always on the lookout for casting new and talented individuals who share their vision. The goal is to make movies year round, so visit www.strongfoundationfilms.com for upcoming news and releases.

While scrolling through my Pinterest feed I came across a comically accurate cartoon of a mother and her son. On the first day of elementary, the son was pictured tugging on his mother begging her not to leave him. Fast-forward 14 years, and the mother is tightly holding onto her son, reluctant to let him go to college. Ironic how quickly perspectives may change. According to a survey conducted by StageofLife.com, “School life stresses teens out more than home life (64.7% verses 35.3%).” Home should always be a safe haven. For the first 18 years of your child’s life, they are completely dependent on a parent’s care and sheltering. But as they graduate into a life of independence, stress and expectations dramatically increase. So how can you prepare your child for life when you are no longer there to welcome them home from school? Giving your child unconditional love and encouragement is an unspoken. What parents should recognize first hand is that preparing students for college begins from the minute they are born. From nurturing them in their adolescence, to teaching them sound morals and values, to saving up for their education; parents have a responsibility to set up their child for success. Firstly, do not be afraid to discuss the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Even though your kids may roll their eyes and say, “I know I know” (I know I did), it is a critical lesson worth stressing. I could not be more thankful for my parents’ time and attention. When the time came, I was not afraid or insecure to say no to peer pressure. My parents had taught me better and gave me the confidence to take the high road.
Secondly, start a savings fund for your child’s education early on. According to the survey “Stress in America” conducted by the American Psychology Association (APA), money is the second most stress/ worry factor amongst Millenniums. Seventy-three percent of Millennials surveyed reported money as a stress inducer. The earlier you begin saving, the less financial tension your aspiring child and your family as a whole will experience. Beyond starting a college fund, teach your children the importance of budgeting and saving for themselves. Money goes quick; lessons last a lifetime. Lastly, once college has finally come avoid being a helicopter parent: that is, an overbearing parent who tries to micromanage their child’s life. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”. Parents, while you should never Beyond starting stop showering your with love and a college fund, kids affection, there comes a point teach your where you must recchildren the ognize they are importance of adults. Preparing your budgeting and children for college is a developmental saving for process. Once 18 years has come and themselves gone, your child should not need you there by his or her side to make judgment calls or know how to manage everyday finances because you have already prepared them with such invaluable resources. Lauren Robertson is a recent graduate of San Antonio Christian Schools. She served as Editor-in- Chief of her school’s magazine, the “Revelation.” She will be attending Baylor University this fall where she will continue her passion for medicine, business, and writing.

What if I told you compromising can be damaging your relationship? Another word for compromise is “negotiation.” When we enter a negotiation, the goal is to give up as little as possible as we try to get as much as we can. Skilled negotiators know exactly what they are willing to give up in order to get what they want. What we are willing to sacrifice usually doesn’t matter that much to us anyway. When we compromise or negotiate, we always enter an adversarial, or a “you against me” environment. How can this be healthy for a relationship? In my own marriage, and working with countless couples, there have been times where one person thinks, “I lost”… “I always give in”… or “you always win.” Over time, this can create a competitive spirit between a husband and wife, or even build resentment. Neither option is healthy for marriage. So what is the alternative to compromise? Instead of asking what do I want and what am I willing to give up to get it, what if couples asked, “What do we believe?” Early in my marriage, Kristen and I had differing views on money. I hated to spend any and my wife was … let’s say, more of a “free spirit” with finances. For me, money represented security. The more money I had in the bank, the more secure I felt. For Kristen, money represented opportunity to build memories and do exciting things.

As you can imagine, this lead to some heated negotiations. We came to a point where we said, “What do we believe about money?”
Here are a few things from our list: Money is a resource and it is not emotional. We should not take our financial position for granted, but should manage our resources well. We should have a budget and save for emergencies and the future. Money is used to take care of our needs. We want to enjoy life. Sometimes money can provide experiences that build our marriage and our relationship with our kids. Once we developed our beliefs, we were able to develop a plan. We felt empowered to make decisions from a position of common conviction rather than fighting for what we thought was the MOST important. Making decisions from a common belief system builds teamwork in marriage and families. It changes the conversation from “what am I willing to give up to get what I really want,” and helps us to answer “what are WE willing to give to invest in the most important areas of our life and relationship?” Are you ready to stop compromising? Where do you and your spouse tend to have conflict? Take a few moments and identify what you are really fighting for. Then ask, “what do we believe about this area of our lives?” It will take some practice, but keep practicing. It has the potential to transform your marriage. Putting Down the iPad: 7 Ways to Raise a Reader BY PRINCESS IVANA PIGNATELLI ARAGONA CORTES
These days it is easy to let your children get engrossed in the world of their iPads; there’s educational games, movies and even interactive stories that can be read to them highlighting reading words just like mom and dad. However, this may not be the best way for our children to get a love of reading. The classic story time can be your time to encourage young readers’ love of books. Here’s seven ways you can make this time count. Make stories part of bedtime: Reading with your children during this time increases their chances they’ll feel positive about reading. Dr. Barry Zuckerman, chief of pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and cofounder of Reach Out and Read, says, “It’s tough for kids to say goodbye to the excitement of the day so falling asleep can be so much sweeter with a parent at their side, reading their favorite bedtime story…” Bedtime story party: Start bedtime a little early and give your child a chance to have a little more fun with the reading adventure before winding down. You can have family members act out the story with flying, finding treasure, or dressing in costume. Retell the story: Children will often cling to a favorite book. Have them tell you the story. They can “read” pictures and use their imagination and memories to help them. For older children have them summarize the book or chapters for you. Later this will help with reading comprehension and retention. Work words into daily life: Read everything to children. It would seem staying on their
grade level is best, but if you find books that interest them a little above their level it will increase their love of reading and vocabulary. Try reading games like Scrabble Jr. or have them help you find words in word finds. Have them write their own stories: Giving children ownership of the story helps them become more involved in wanting to read the story. You can have them tell a tale from school, use photographs to spark their imagination as to what adventures happened before, during or after the picture, or start a story at bedtime and let them create their own ending. Let fiction guide them: We all have bad days and experiences, but children don’t know that yet. Helping them through tough times by reading books with their favorite characters going through something scary or unfamiliar is a great way to help ease their anxieties. Set a good example: We already know kids do everything they see us do! So why not build on that natural curiosity and show them your love of books? Having reading time in the house is a great way to share our love of reading, but also your interests such as sports, medicine, comic book super heroes, and even other world cultures. Your love of reading can open up a whole new dialogue with your child as well as their own eagerness to explore. Princess Ivana is a mother of two and Chief Digital Officer at Social Thinking. She is also a real princess married to an Italian prince. The couple met while Ivana was on scholarship at Pepperdine.
Years ago I had a friend that would tell me what I was thinking and why. She assumed she knew my thoughts and motives. Even when she got it right, it was still hurtful, because it’s my job to share what I think and feel, not hers.
Don’t Assume You Know Over the years, I realized I was guilty of the same thing with my husband. I may not have verbalized it, but I thought I knew what he was thinking and that I understood his motives. Chances are I got at least some of it wrong and it messed up a number of conversations and generally hurt our relationship. I think a sign of maturity is inviting others to reveal their thoughts and motives, instead of telling them what they think and
why. It’s respectful and you avoid many a misunderstanding. Learn from my mistakes: If you don’t understand why your spouse is doing something (or not doing something), nicely ask why.
Before you “assume,” try this crazy method called “asking.” Author Unknown

Summer and Sight and Back to School This is my 11th summer as the owner of Stone Oak Vision Source, and the time spent serving the community has flown by. We are happy to have four doctors on staff now to allow easy access for appointments. Dr. Jed Martin will join us in August. He is married to our very own Dr. Lindsey Denison. Dr. Martin is a native of West Texas and the Texas Panhandle and is very excited to be practicing with us. He attended Texas A&M University, where he was on the Dean’s List and received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Biology in 2007. Dr. Martin was awarded his Doctor of Optometry in May 2012, when he graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry. He was recognized there with clinical letters of excellence in areas of Family Practice and Ocular Disease. Dr. Martin obtained his Glaucoma Certification in August 2012. His interest in optometry sparked from mission work in South America, where he worked alongside an optometrist providing vision care for less fortunate individuals. Dr. Martin completed his clinical rotations of ocular disease in San Antonio and Austin. He is also a member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. In addition to adding a new doctor, we are getting closer to our big move to our new building. It is located on Knights Cross near Stone Oak Parkway on the southeast corner- you can see the construction from
Stone Oak Parkway. We anticipate moving in October, and we will let everyone know. We already have some of our new lines and displays in our current office- so come by and check it out. This is one of the busiest times of the year with back-to-school right around the corner. Be sure to schedule your family’s appointments before that first classroom bell rings, so they will have all the tools they need for success in school. We see children as young as 6 months old, and it is important to have an actual eye exam in addition to any vision screening the pediatrician performs, as many health issues and conditions such as hyperopia ( farsightedness) can be missed at screenings. Our in-house lab can make glasses for you the same day, in many cases. We also stock many different brands of contact lenses, so you can leave with your new prescription immediately. Visit www.visionsource-stoneoak.com to make an appointment, or call 210-495-9020 today. How to Find the Right Career for You BY BENJAMIN TODD

Everyone knows it’s important to find a job you’re good at, but how do you do that? The standard advice is to think about it for weeks and weeks until you “discover your talent”. To help, career advisers give you quizzes about your interests and preferences. Others recommend you go on a gap year, reflect deeply, imagine different options, and try to figure out what truly motivates you. Becoming really good at most things

Relationships Can Be Good (or Bad) for Health Young adults who are in high-quality relationships are in better physical and mental health, a new study shows. “Health benefits begin to accrue relatively quickly with high-quality relationships and supportive contexts,” says Ashley Barr, assistant professor of sociology at the University at Buffalo. “And then we see detrimental effects from low-quality relationships–particularly, those low-quality relationships that last a long time.” Younger people today are waiting longer to get married than those in previous generations, and are waiting longer to finish school. And during this longer period, they’re moving in and out of relationships. “Much of the research literature focuses on relationships and health in the context of marriage,” says Barr. “The majority of our respondents were not married, but these relationships are still impactful to health, for better or for worse.” An earlier study with a group of African Americans suggested patterns of instability in relationships mattered when it came to depressive symptoms, alcohol problems, and self-reporting of overall health.

Given those findings, she and colleagues wanted to see if the same patterns held true in a very different group of people. And they did. For the new study, published in the Journal of Family Psychology, researchers used the Iowa Youth and Families Project, a group of all-white youth from two-parent, married families in rural Iowa. About onethird of the group reported relatively large

Do they engage in deviant behaviors? Is there general anti-sociality?” The longer people are in high-quality relationships, or the faster they get out of
low-quality relationships, the better their health. “It’s not being in a relationship that matters; it’s being in a long-term, high-quality relationship that’s beneficial,” Barr says. “Low-quality relationships are detrimental to health. The findings suggest that it’s better for health to be single than to be in a low-quality relationship.” Attention to changes in these relationships is important, particularly in the context of the extended transition to adulthood. “It’s rare today for young adults to enter a romantic relationship and stay in that relationship without ever changing partners or relationship characteristics,” she says. “We now have two studies that found similar patterns and similar implications for those changes.” Bert Gambini/University of Buffalo
takes decades of practice. So to a large degree your abilities are built rather than “discovered”. Darwin, Lincoln, JK Rowling and Oprah all failed early in their career, then went on to completely dominate their fields. That aside, plenty of research shows that it’s really hard to predict what you’ll be good at ahead of time, especially just by “going with your gut”, and it turns out career tests don’t work either. Instead, the best way to find the right career for you is to go investigate – learn about and try out your options, looking outwards rather than inwards. Here we’ll explain how.
The bottom line Research shows that it’s really hard to work out what you’re going to be good at ahead of time, especially through selfreflection. Instead, go investigate. After an initial cut down of your options, then go learn more and then try them out. Minimise the costs of trying out your options by taking advantage of your best opportunities to explore (e.g. the years between undergrad and grad study), trying things in the best order (e.g. corporate sector before non-profit sector), and finding cheap ways to test your options (e.g. doing a freelance project before you go full time). When you need to make a final decision, use a systematic process Keep adapting your plan over time. Think like a scientist investigating a hypothesis. JHS and Brandeis Football Programs Team Up to Help Hungry SA Kids
August ‘Peanut Butter Bowl’ Match-Up Benefits Snack Pak 4 Kids by AMY MORGAN, Beacon Content Director amy@saBeacon.com
The Johnson Jaguars and Brandeis Broncos have renamed their annual football matchup the Peanut Butter Bowl, as they invite their community member to donate jars of peanut butter to support Snack Pak 4 Kids, an organization feeding chronically hungry children in San Antonio. The varsity game will be played at 7 p.m., Aug. 27, at NISD’s Farris Stadium. Students and players will collect as many Peanut Butter (16-18 oz. creamy) jars as possible leading up to the game. Snack Pak 4 Kids currently feeds 1,000 chronically hungry kids each year in San Antonio by providing Snack Paks of namebrand food every Friday to children identified by teachers as those who lack nutritional resources on the weekend, said Volunteer Executive Director Leslie Kingman. Snacks are supplemented monthly with a jar of peanut butter – a total of 1,000 each month, which is where the JHS v. Brandeis Peanut Butter Bowl will help. “We are excited along with the Johnson community to join together with Brandeis and collect as many jars of peanut butter as possible for the hungry kids in San Antonio. Every jar will help, so come to Farris on 8/27 and bring a jar… or two,” said JHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Ron Rittimann. “We’re thrilled to have these football programs come alongside us because we so value the importance of kids helping kids,” Kingman said. Jars can be brought to the junior varsity and freshman football games between the two high schools, as well as at the Aug. 18, Meet the Jags event and at the JHS Welcome Center leading up to the game. Brandeis Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator Jeff Fleener and his wife, Katy, will communicate to the Brandeis community. They also plan collections at their Meet the Broncos event August 18. Last school year, its fifth, Snack Pak 4 kids served 13 schools in three school districts. The organization works with faithbased groups and civic organizations to support a school, Kingman said. “The beauty of the program is care and consistency,” she added. “We provide namebrand snacks that we purchase through Labatt foods – we really want our kids to
feel they are important and that we are giving them the best. Our goal is to feed the kids well in a way that honors them and gives them dignity.” She added food insecurity affects students’ ability to perform in school: they are sluggish on Monday and nervous and anxious on Friday because they are afraid they won’t have enough to eat on the weekend. “Teachers tell us from surveys it (the snack pack) makes a huge difference in concentration, attendance and overall health, as well as behavior, that go together to allow a child to be successful in school,” she said. The organization has a waiting list of schools looking for a sponsor, contact SP4KSA.org for more information or to get involved.

When I Run, I Feel His Pleasure by JIM FAULK, Area Director-FCA
“When I run, I feel His pleasure.” No, no, no, I’m not talking about my running again, for I certainly don’t feel any pleasure. I’m talking about Summer Olympics, Rio-style! The Faulk family loves all kinds of sports, but we really get jacked up every four years, as America’s best put it on the line against the rest of the world. As a matter of fact, we were getting our engines warmed up (sitting in our easy chairs) watching the finals of the women’s gymnastics and track and field events. Like wow, how do those young ladies, most of them teens, do what they do on those bars and beams? I personally don’t believe that the human body was built to do some of those routines. And how about those sprinters, literally diving head-first at the finish line, attempting to grasp one of those coveted team spots. Now, if that doesn’t get you excited, how about the red, white, and blue commercials featuring the athletes? Some of them will literally jerk your heart out of your chest. Being in that Olympic spirit, I found the next morning even more interesting as I clicked on my morning devotional from This Week in Christian History. Who was fea-
tured on July 11, 1924? No one other than the Flying Scotsman, Eric Liddell, great British Empire Olympic sprinter, profiled in the 1981 Academy Award Best Picture film, “Chariots of Fire,”, whom I quoted above. My devotional focused on the urgent plea from evangelist D. P. Thompson to Liddell, “I need your help. Not many people are coming to the meetings; I think they will come if they know you’re speaking.” And yes, this is the same Eric Liddell who withdrew
“We really get jacked up every four years, as America’s best put it on the line against the rest of the world.” from his best race, due to his conviction about not running on the Lord’s day. To this day, many people believe that God honored that public conviction with both bronze and gold medals later in those Paris games. In my opinion, the real story is found in the responses he gave with both his words and his life: “Yes” to the evangelist and “yes” to lifetime missionary service in north China. When asked later if he regretted his decision to leave the fame and glory (and today it would be dollars, as well), his response was, “It’s natural for a chap to think over
that sometimes, but I’m glad I’m at the work I’m engaged at now. A fellow’s life counts for far more at this than the other.” Because Eric recognized who he was, Whose he was, and the privilege of influence, his “yes,” brought the Good News to his hometown crowd, to a foreign people thousands of miles away, and even to millions of moviegoers, who in a very real sense, years later, paid dollars and pounds and yen to hear and see the gospel. And all this because Eric Liddell knew for which purpose God had created him – to run fast, then use that platform to share the Good News. I’m fairly certain that we all have a platform, a sphere of influence to promote the Kingdom. Like Eric, God is waiting for us to say, “Yes!” Check out our Facebook, Twitter, Alamo FCA’s Website, and Instagram accounts! Originally from Ft. Worth, Jim Faulk has lived in SATX since high school.
