Foundation Helps to Maximize Potential by BLAKE CLIFTON, Beacon Community Manager, Blake@saBeacon.com

The Texas Foundation of Hope, (TXFH) is a non-profit corporation that started as an idea in it’s founder, Beatrice Stephen’s mind. It was born when her special needs daughter graduated from high school and had nothing to do and very few options. There were only two places at the time that could accommodate her. Out of this need came the growth of a deep, passionate desire to develop a place where her daughter as well as others facing the same dilemma could have a place to go. A place where the future was bright and hope goal is to find a facility that can accommosprings eternally. There is a traditional flag football and there is a team composed of special needs athletes and volunteer partners that is a unified flag football Team. The Basketball teams are similar. There is a traditional basketball team composed of all special need athletes and there is a team composed of special needs athletes and volunteer partners that is a unified basketball team. All teams are very competitive but the foundation’s unified teams have both won state for the past two years. The members love to participate in sports and would play for hours if given the chance. We met the sports director Pete Molina, who is very passionate about sports. This passion, along with his excitement, passes down to all the members. The TXFH Collection includes an array of artistic jewelry and gift items made by the Special Needs members and is sold

through events and boutiques. The proceeds from the sale of the collections help provide employment opportunities for the Special Needs members and help provide much needed funds for TXFH’s operational expenses. They also offer wholesale prices. Each item is handmade with much loving care and a signed card is proudly attached by the individual making the item. Collection items can be purchased at our website, www.txfh.org. Additionally, the restaurant quality food service is quite impressive. They hold a commercial food license and provide homemade lunches and desserts for businesses every Tuesday and Thursday, for a low price. The foundation’s long term goal is to have a residential facility for members who need it. It will take the form of condominium style living quarters. The facility will also house a work place/day habilitation center for our non-resident members and will include a large sports complex. The sports complex will be built to accommodate the rental needs of our special needs San Antonio community.

My Brother’s Keeper by BEACON STAFF

Two years ago, President Obama called upon all political leaders to take on the “My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge.” My Brother’s Keeper is focused on shortening the gap faced by young men of color in the United States. The president wants to see change in certain parts of the community, with the end game being complete and equal opportunity and success across the demographical board. Mayor Ivy Taylor accepted the challenge

to make My Brother’s Keeper a part of our San Antonian community. Andrew Solano is heading up the MBK mission for our community. “My elevator pitch on what My Brother’s Keeper is all about, is we are using data to identify and focus on areas for men of color, and improve their life outcomes, and create opportunities that they would not normally have.” The data they are lookcontinued on page 4

EDUCATION

The Best Teachers Aren’t Afraid to Take Risks While US educational policy emphasizes high-stakes testing and scripted lessons, the best teachers in the business are taking creative risks—often drawing from their own interests and hobbies—to help students learn, new research finds. Examining the classroom practices of National Teacher of the Year winners and finalists, the study suggests successful educators aren’t afraid to push the boundaries by incorporating real world, cross-disciplinary themes into their lessons. Consider the San Diego teacher who raps his algebra lessons. Or the Oregon science teacher whose students create advertisements to learn photosynthesis. Or the Iowa language arts teacher who uses musical concepts to teach Franz Kafka’s complex novella The Metamorphosis.

ing at suggests the importance and need for leaders to look upon high school graduation rate, second level education, and work-force development for men of color. Although MBK has been in existence for two years, San Antonio has only been active since March of 2016, taking about a year to plan how the movement will go. A committee came together to prepare for the outreach. Reaching out into the community, the committee identified what goals to focus on, and answered the question of “what are we trying to accomplish with this effort?” Once they found their data, they began acting on their findings to see improvements in the city. In these five months, Andrew has already seen great strides for the cause. Andrew’s team are now in the implementation process, making physical and intangible strides to better the lives of colored men in San Antonio. “We want to bring up the rates of education and employment, while we bring down the count of crimes and recidivism rates,” Andrew stated. The key is to get in front of and destroy the built-in barriers that men of color face in our country. As we move to a future where opportunity is on an even playing field, we can ask how to get involved in the movement. This is a proactive idea in a reactive world. My Brother’s Keeper thrives on the positive leadership from our political or local heads. “That’s what ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ is all about.” President Obama shares on the MBK website, “Helping more of our young people stay on track. Providing the support they need to think more broadly about their future. Building on what works - when it works, in those critical life-changing moments.” The Beacon was proud to see over 200 people come together for the My Brother’s Keeper Summit this past month. There are always ways to get involved. To see more of what MBK is doing in San Antonio, visit www.mbksa.org, or www.whitehouse.gov/ my-brothers-keeper for a national lens.

can leave us feeling empty and helplesswithout a sense of individuality and power as temptations and peer pressure invade and dictate who we think we ought to be. A popular misgiving college students have is the need to “recreate” themselves. As if college was a blank canvas on which we can paint a new, improved version of ourselves- a portrait more culturally acceptable. This pliable state of mind proves treacherous because it leaves us open to surrounding temptations and insecure of ourselves. While change is inevitable as we grow and mature, it can be done while remaining true to one’s morals and beliefs. As we head off to college, or perhaps begin a new chapter in our lives, remember college is just an extension of our education. No doubt you will be a different person on the day you graduate from your first day of class. You will “recreate” yourself in the sense that you have matured academically, spiritually, and emotionally. If you think people will like you for who you pretend to be, you will ultimately end up disliking yourself. Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero was right when he said, “Man is his own worst enemy.” Disowning who you were created to be pleasing to others will ultimately leave you discontent. Do not allow college to shake out the essence of who you are. Rather, confidently wield this opportunity to maximize your education, strengthen your relationships, and prepare yourself for the workforce. All in all, Dr. Seuss understood the importance and brilliance behind being original: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” http://www.cpyu.org/resource/why-students-abandon-their-faith-lessons-fromwilliam-wilberforce/ Lauren Robertson is a recent graduate of San Antonio Christian Schools. The Secret To Sucess: Begin

Famous Graphic Designer, Milton Glaser, once said, "You can't do [something] by simply thinking what you are going to do. So you begin. That's my entire secret: begin." Exactly. As someone who will read half a dozen books on a subject before starting anything, his simple statement resonated with me. Not too long ago I wrote about my dislike of being a beginner. Too often that feeling keeps me from following Mr. Glaser's advice - I don't get to the begin stage because I don't like the time I am stuck in the learning phase. Of course, as I noted, that is silly since none of us are good at much of anything without learning about it and then practicing. Blogger Joel Gascoigne wrote that successful people always start with small projects. They begin at the beginning and then grow. "Try anything" says writer, Andi Cumbo-Floyd. Parenting advisor, Mary Kathryn Johnson, says we all need "Practice, Patience, and Perseverance." Author James Clear says, "Getting started is more important that succeeding." Does all this advice relate to building a Satisfying Retirement? I'd suggest, "Yes." In the post, You are doing nothing wrong in your retirement, I argue that your retirement journey is, or will be, unique. Your mix of circumstances, life experiences, trials and troubles, and preparation will be unlike anyone else. That really means you began at the beginning. Your whole life has led you to where you are today. You built a foundation and then added to it as you aged and matured. Now, you have constructed a unique path for your retirement journey. You didn't fear beginning because there was no other choice. That should be an encouraging thought, even for someone like me who hates not to continued on page 9

I am beginning some aspect of my life, over and over, rather constantly. I am absolutely not the same person I was years ago. PETS

4 Medical Advances That Will Improve Your Pet’s Health There are several developments in veterinary medicine they can improve your pet’s health. In no particular order, they include: Choline Loading Choline is a chemical naturally produced by the body that is used as a precursor for the major nerve transmitter acetylcholine. Choline loading involves giving additional choline, through the use of supplements, to your pet. While I use choline supplementation as part of my treatment for a variety of medical problems (diabetes, liver disease, gallbladder disease, seizures, etc.) I find it most advantageous in the treatment of cognitive disorder (doggie and key Alzheimer’s disease.) Additionally, starting choline supplementation when pets begin to mature (I typically begin choline supplementation at five years of age for the dogs and cats in my practice,) can reduce and maybe even eliminate cognitive disorder as pets age. The product I have found particularly helpful (and one in which I have done a lot of

research) is Cholodin by MVP Laboratories (http://www.petcarenaturally.com/supplements.php) HA HA (hyaluronic acid) is a normal constituent of joint fluid. Providing additional HA in supplement form is very useful for pets with arthritis. I have found that supplementation with HA is often even more helpful than glucosamine in many cases, especially for patients with moderate to severe arthritis. It is one of my favorite supplements to use (along with other therapies) for pets that no longer respond to traditional joint supplements. Immune Support Regardless of your pet’s disease, using supplements (herbs, homeopathics, etc.) to support and possibly strengthen its immune system is an important part of therapy. Regardless of the treatment chosen, pets with an inadequate immune response to the disease will die from the disease. Your vet-

erinarian can prescribe therapies to strengthen your pet’s immune system to help it recover from a number of diseases. Minimize Vaccines All the research that has been available for the last 10 years shows that most pets produce immunity that lasts longer than 12 months to most of the vaccines currently in use. This means that pets rarely need vaccinations after they enter adulthood. A simple blood antibody test called a titer test can tell your doctor which vaccines your pet may need. In my practice, most of my patients only receive vaccines every 5 to 10 years (rabies is an exception based upon state law) based upon titer testing.

Stay the Course Dear Dave, Our daughter is a special needs child, who doctors say will live about half as long as the average adult. There’s also a good chance she will be under our care her entire life. We just finished Baby Step 3 of your plan, so we have all of our debt paid off except for the house, and we have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses saved. We have health insurance, too. However, we were wondering how the situation with our little girl affects retirement planning and college funding? Jonathan Dear Jonathan, I know this may sound strange, but the

situation with your daughter really doesn’t affect things all that much. The only real difference is that it sounds like you’ll be responsible for your sweet daughter for the foreseeable future — not just until she’s 18 or 21. If you don’t already have it, you and your wife should both buy 10 to 12 times your annual incomes you’ll be responsi- in term life insurMake sure ble for your sweet ance. the money from daughter for the the policies is set up to go into a foreseeable future special needs trust that would be managed for her care. That way, your baby will be taken care of in the event something unexpected happens to you. Otherwise, just keep following my plan. Baby Step 4 means you start putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Baby Step 5 is college funding, if that’s a

consideration for her, followed by paying off your home early. Then, of course, the last Baby Step is building wealth and giving. Financially speaking, you’re looking at filling a need in the event of your deaths. This should be covered by life insurance or investments. If you reach a point where your investments are substantial, and money from those things can adequately cover her needs and the needs of your family, then you can always drop the insurance policies. God bless you all, Jonathan. —Dave Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business, and CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books.

The Five Reasons Why Selfish Giving is Good According to Giving USA 2016, the Annual Report on Philanthropy, Americans give around 2 percent of their income to charity or other non-profit organizations. Does this strike you as a low number? Because it is 2 percent of a pretax number, the percent of giving is slightly higher after tax, health insurance, and 401(k) contributions. But, in all reality, not so much more. Let's assume that after the above deductions, 5 percent of take home pay is being donated to charity. 5 percent of take home pay is not going to eradicate world hunger or solve societal problems. Maybe we collectively don't really care about those things anyway. If I sug-

gested that our debit card reflects our heart, then it is safe to say that we care...just a little. We care about 5 percent. So, let's get motivated through our narcissistic, self-absorbed and cheapskate approach to life. I believe there are five reasons you should selfishly give more than 5 percent of your take home pay. 1. You are happier. According to the Science of Generosity Initiative at Notre Dame, those who gave more than 10 percent of their income say they rarely or never experience depression compared to those who don't give 10 percent. Many Americans suffer from depression, and much of the depression is trig-

We Welcome Dr. Jed Martin to our Clinic As summer in Stone Oak draws to an end, we have a new doctor joining our group: Dr. Joshua “Jed” Martin is the husband of our very own Dr. Lindsey Denison and with our new building opening soon, we now have room for him to join our practice! We are very excited to welcome him to our Stone Oak location and he will also be working at the Bulverde office. Because Jed and Lindsey are soon to be first time parents, he will be covering her maternity leave as well while she is out. They recently bought a home in Timberwood Park and he’s happy for the shorter commute both offices bring for him. Dr. Martin is a native of West Texas and the Texas Panhandle. He attended Texas A&M University where he was on the Dean’s List and received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Biology in We plan to move into our new build- was awarded his 2007. Dr. Martin’s interest in optometry sparked from mission work in South America where he worked alongside an optometrist providing vision care for less fortunate individuals. Dr. Martin completed his clinical rotations of ocular disease in San Antonio and Austin. He is also a member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. We plan to move into our new building on Knights Cross and Stone Oak Parkway (behind the Excellence ER building) in late October. The construction is moving along and we are so excited to be able to have 3 doctors on site once we are moved in! It will help with getting patients in for same day emergencies easier. The design will be better for patient flow. We are happy to have a refreshment station for everyone to enjoy and also a larger children’s area in our new office. We have been adding new frame lines this year to accommodate the larger space and we have more coming this Fall. Beacon Radio Interview with Mayor Ivy Taylor Beacon Radio with Mayor Ivy Taylor; interviewer-Steve Teel (Aug. 19 recorded 2016; to air scheduled Sept. 3, 2016)... Excerpts for Beacon September 2016 Issue.

Steve Teel: This is Beacon Radio, I’m your host Steve Teel, and what a blessing and honor, listeners, you know I love to talk to difference makers, well let me tell you: I’ve got a difference maker today. The Mayor, Mayor Ivy Taylor, of San Antonio We’re so glad that you’re here with us. How are you doing? Mayor Taylor: Thank you so much for having me, Steve. I’m great. ST: Well listen, There’s so much to talk about. I’m joking with you when we’re not recording that it seems to me like with all you’re doing, looking at your Twitter feed and looking in the newspaper I mean, you’re just doing a million things and it’s incredible so I’m just wondering if there’s three or four Mayor Taylor clones running around. MT: (laughing) No, I don’t even have a twin like the last mayor ST: That’s great. Well, what we like to do is talk with difference makers and obviously like I said you’re a real difference maker here in this great city. I would like to know more about your faith and where that came from, how it developed. We’re going to talk about a lot of things but can you tell me about your faith background? MT: Okay sure, I’d love to. Well I guess the Bible says train up a child in the way that they should go and when they’re old they won’t depart from it so I have to give credit to my parents for the way in which I was raised. My parents were, I guess, raised in the Baptist church and when I was about nine, they started attending a holiness church. You know I was raised in New York. I grew up in Queens. And they started attending a church called Tabernacle of Prayer For All People where Apostle Johnny Washington was the founder. ST: What was the name of the church? MT: Tabernacle of Prayer For All People ST: Okay, I love it. MT: So it was kind of a mega-church before they were more in vogue than they are now cause this was late 70s and so that was the church that I grew

up in. I have to say: I hated it. (both laugh) I’m not gonna’ lie. ST: I love the honesty. MT: I hated it. It was very restrictive. It was one of those kind of rules-oriented so I wasn’t allowed to wear pants, jewelry, make-up. We couldn’t go to the movies. We couldn’t go bowling. ST: Couldn’t go bowling? MT: No, we couldn’t even go bowling. If you went swimming you’re supposed to go to the Y with the girls, the boys over here, so I really always kind of inwardly chafed at the rules. I never rebelled against them at all; I was obedient, I did everything my parents said. I wore a skirt on the senior ski trip, I mean I did (laughter). But I didn’t like it. It didn’t fit me where I was--I never felt completely comfortable. In hindsight, in retrospect, what I have truly come to value is that that church focused on us knowing the Word. They were very biblically focused, they had a Bible School. My mom was the registrar at the Bible School so she worked at the Bible School during many of my school years from the time I was twelve until after the time I had graduated from college so everything kind of revolved around that and I think I got more of a grounding in Scripture than a lot of people in other types of churches so when I went off to college that was my opportunity to really do my own thing but I didn’t stray real far... ST: Okay. I’m laughing because if I went to Yale, I would say, “When I went to Yale...” (MT laughing) and you have such a humble spirit... You’re like, “When I went off to college...” MT: So, yes, Yale was the college I went to. I joined the gospel choir. What Drives a Man

MEN

Choose to Never Give Up

continued from page 15

by JOSH LOPEZ

I grew up in the poorest part of South Bronx, New York. It was Mom, Dad and my five siblings. Growing up we experienced some very challenging times. My Dad moved us to Austin, Texas when I was a teenager and it was there I saw him battle with a drug addiction that later led to me being a homeless kid in Austin, Texas. At 15 years old, I dropped out of high school and began making very poor choices in a disparity to find my place in this world. A couple years later I had a breaking point and decided that I wanted to do something with my life. I moved to Puerto Rico and went back to school. I worked three jobs to put me through college. Later, I graduated valedictorian of my class. Somehow, all that pain that I went through as a young kid had turned into this drive and motivation to work hard for my dreams. I landed my first record deal straight out of college and began touring Latin America opening up for acts like Ricky Martin, Mana and other great artists. I was 21 and living the dream. I still felt like something was missing. My mom had always taught me that life was about living with purpose and doing what I had received as a gift to help others. During this time in my life, everything centered around me and it was clear that I needed a purpose greater than just becoming famous and wealthy. It was in the next months that my life took on an even greater turn and I found purpose through my faith. I decided to move back to Austin, Texas and pursue this purpose in my life. During the next years I had the opportunity to work with some pretty amazing artist and producers. I have traveled the world doing what I love for years. Seven years later, I had amazing opportunities as a recording artist and songwriter, I started my own business and proposed to my dream girl. It’s been an amazing journey. Today, we have three precious children, a thriving business, a healthy lifestyle and above all...we live our lives with purpose and hope that we can inspire others to never give up. Our life is by no means perfect but it is a very blessed life.

To wake up every morning and do that which you love and it help others in the process is an absolute dream come true. We continue to dream big because we know that the big dreams that we had years ago are now reality. Anything is possible if you believe. I have found that some of our greatest moments have come from pain and facing adversity. The decision to never give up has helped us see greater things along the journey and helped us enjoy the destination so much more. Life is full of adversity, it is full of challenge and disappointments. I could’ve been another young kid turned criminal, drug addict etc. If it had not been for grace and the continual motivation to never give up, I would’ve missed out on some pretty great moments in life. I am so grateful today for dreams realized but even more for the challenges in life that helped shape those dreams today. Am I chasing greater dreams now?....absolutely! Am I facing greater challenges now? You bet. You don’t get one without the other. A year ago, I had the opportunity to do the Ironman Race, which is a triathlon that consists of completing a 2.4 mile open-water swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 marathon run in one day. I trained for one year and had many obstacles along the way. After a lot of hard work, a great support system and many lessons learned along the way, I finished the race and became an Ironman. It was one of the greatest things that I have ever experienced in life. To defeat something that represented so much fear and impossibility. To conquer a dream that seemed so far out of reach. It made me think about life and how life is a journey that has many obstacles, challenges and lessons. When we choose to never give up and stay the course, we have so many great rewards as we cross the finish line. No matter how hard or how challenging life can be sometimes....Don’t Give Up on your dreams and purpose in life. I hope you are inspired by my story. Don’t give up on dreams, hopes and most of all the purpose of why you are here on this earth. Don’t ever give up.

revealed? Painful memories, unresolved conflict, self-doubt, feelings of worthlessness and shame compound to create insecurity and an internal narrative full of turmoil. If being at peace with oneself can be defined as a major life goal, these warring negative emotions, by definition, have robbed the men of a constructive mental outlook and led them to behave in emotionally damaging ways. For example: A man with poor childhood experience feels confusion and selfdoubt. His subsequent conclusion; he is a person of little value. This leads to the rationale that his poor treatment as a child was related to his being different, bad or wrong. As a coping mechanism, the man buries his story. He learns to create a new identity to cover up the defect in himself he perceives because of his childhood neglect. Several common roles and manifesting behavior emerge: Pleaser Man- tries to make everyone happy but feels defective and has no inner happiness. Angry Man- rejects and belittles others before they can reject him. Lost man- can’t identify how to effec-

tively interact. He does not lead; he stays out of the way. Eventually, the man realizes playing a role does not satisfy his emotional needs. He craves feeling successful, loved and free. His strategy is to develop a secret fantasy life where he is loved, enjoyed and always succeeds to compensate for the emotional deficits of his life. He knows he has secrets - that his heart and emotions are divided and feel wrong. But he doesn’t know how to live any differently. Instead, he continues to hide behind walls of shame, tell himself no one would like/love him if they really knew him. He rationalizes he must take care of himself – and sneaking around and a fantasy life don’t hurt anyone. They are his ways to cope. I hope I have illuminated the downward spiral of emotions and rationale that manifest as the behavior of inappropriate sexual activity. My next column will address how to change this thought process to move toward a healthier emotional outcome. Stephen L. Cervantes is a Licensed Marriage Therapist and expert in relationship love. SPORTS

Olympic Champions by JIM FAULK, Area Director-FCA

The Denison Forum’s Dr. Jim Denison blogged last month regarding the 10,500 athletes from 206 nations, to include 10 refugee athletes, who will compete for 4,924 medals, while the rest of us will be watching an estimated 6,000 hours of televised coverage. The international business community expects to lose $5.4 billion in productivity, due to employees watching Olympics coverage at work. The International Olympic Committee reports that 500,000 will travel to Rio de Janeiro, purchasing some 5.5 million tickets, while the rest of us (3.6 billion) will watch it on television or livestream. By these statistics alone, it appears that once again the overwhelming majority of us are spectators, leaving a miniscule minority

actually participating, somewhat like church. For some crazy reason, those of us sitting at home in our recliners and armed with remote controls were splashing and stroking along with Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and the rest of the US Swimming team as they amassed gold medal after gold medal. We found ourselves competing right alongside Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and the Final Five as they piled up the medals as well. I could go on about USA’s Olympic champions – I believe the final medal count has ended at 121! We love our champions and somehow, for some reason, live our dreams and lives out through them. When they win, we win; and when they lose…well, you know that feeling. The Apostle Paul must have loved the Greek Games; he seemed to understand the heart of those true competitors when he wrote this to the Corinthian believers, “Do

you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises selfcontrol in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” (I Corinthians 9:24-27, NASB) It’s obvious that Paul grasped the overwhelming commitment of those early athletes’ hearts, souls, and bodies! He understood that those Olympians were “all in” for perishable goals of the world. It was here that the Apostle admonished his young followers to run with all their hearts to the prize that is imperishable, to be on guard against distractions and wasting their time

and energy on the wrong things. The real win for Paul, the real championship, was in proclaiming the imperishable Kingdom of God, making it clear that he didn’t want to be disqualified, penalized, or benched. He wanted so badly to be known as the gospel athlete who ran to win, fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Perhaps as this Olympic season comes to an end we can hear Paul’s call to cease spectating and join the players on the field – get out of our church pew and become a missional athlete, proclaiming the True Champion: Jesus, who personally awards true and lasting championship medals.
