Pilot study offers fertility lifeline
Couples who are struggling to conceive have been offered hope by four European women who have had successful pregnancies following a genetic screening process. The women involved in the pilot study trialled a new method of recognising abnormalities in eggs known as comparative genomic hybridisation and the results of the study could have far-reaching consequences for in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) techniques. The European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (Eshre) announced that women at two centres in Bonn, Germany, and Bologna, Italy, had given birth to healthy babies after undergoing the procedure.
Botox approved for migraine treatment The United States’ all-powerful Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has given the go ahead for the use of anti-wrinkle injection Botox in treating chronic migraines. The FDA said in an official statement that Botox injections could now be given to adult sufferers of chronic migraines around the head and neck once every three months to help minimize future headache. In July the procedure was approved in United Kingdom, the first country to recognize the application of the injection for this indication.

The ancient Indian practice of Yoga could help to alleviate the symptoms of a chronic pain syndrome called fibromyalgia, a small study has suggested. A group of 25 women suffering from the condition met once a week for two months for a two-hour yoga class and were compared to 28 women with the condition who maintained their normal pain management routine. After eight weeks, the yoga group reported improvements in both the physical and psychological aspects of dealing with fibromyalgia. “The women were somewhat apprehensive when we started, but once they got into the rhythm of it they found it to be very helpful,” said lead study author James Carson, a clinical psychologist and pain specialist at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. “They came back after the first week reporting less pain, better sleep and feeling encouraged for the first time in years. That type of change continued to build over the course of the program.”

DIABETES: BREAST CANCER
DIABETES: BREAST CANCER
“It is still unclear whether diabetes, through a number of mechanisms, makes the cancer more aggressive or whether the host organism is less resistant to cancer progression
relationship between the two is a major challenge for researchers. However, as two of the most common medical afflictions, there is hope that the study of the relationship
could lead to major breakthroughs in the treatment of both conditions, says Kopp. But it is certainly not an easy task. “Because of their frequency, reciprocal influences – even minor influences – may have a major impact [on the relationship]. However, the signs from across many studies appear to show that diabetes can have a devastating impact
on other areas of your health. “Epidemiological studies clearly indicate that the risk of several types of cancer (including pancreas, liver, breast, colorectal, urinary tract, and female reproductive organs) is increased in diabetic patients, he says. “Mortality is also moderately increased. One of the key areas that scientists believe could link the two is the body’s insulin levels.
Smoke and (perhaps) fire While expert opinion is still split over the relationship between diabetes and certain forms of cancer, a new consensus report jointly published by the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association suggests that it is certainly being taken seriously. “There have been some epidemiological studies that suggest that individuals who are obese or who have [high levels of insulin] appear to have an increased prevalence of certain malignancies, but it’s a complex issue because the association is not true for all cancers, declared Dr David Harlan, director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, and one of the authors of the consensus report. “So, there’s some smoke to suggest

DIABETES: BREAST CANCER
Like many chronic diseases, diabetes rarely exists in isolation. For those individuals unfortunate enough to be born with, or to develop a lifelong condition such as diabetes, it may seem unimaginable that they could then develop a second, more serious condition – such as cancer – but, cruelly, this is all too often the case. The reality of living with one chronic disease is that it can often make an individual more susceptible to other conditions.
“In a recent study aimed at evaluating whether diabetes could affect breast cancer prognosis, after a 5-year mean follow-up, mortality for breast cancer was significantly higher in women with diabetes
At least, that is what the cutting edge research is increasingly starting to show, says Dr Andreas Kopp, a consultant in oncology and obstetrics & gynecology at Dubai Healthcare City’s German Clinic. “In a recent study aimed at evaluating whether diabetes could affect breast cancer prognosis, after a 5-year mean follow-up, mortality for breast cancer was significantly higher in women with diabetes, he says. “A positive association was also found between diabetes and endometrial cancer mortality in two studies.

But why is there such a worrying link between diabetes and the forms of cancer mentioned in the study? “Several possible explanations can be put forth to explain the increased risk of cancer death in diabetes mellitus, says Kopp. “For instance, it is still unclear whether diabetes, through a number of mechanisms, makes the cancer more aggressive or whether the host organism is less resistant to cancer progression. ontrolling insulin levels should be the number one priority for diabetes patients, says Novo Nordisk’s Henrik Bendix Dahl
36
When it comes to living with diabetes, people have a habit of making life difficult for themselves. Left unregulated, blood sugar levels will increase to high levels especially if the individual involved has a poor lifestyle and diet. In turn, this greatly increases the risk of conditions such as kidney failure, blindness, stroke, and numbness in feet leading to amputations. However, with modern medicine and disease monitoring improving all the time, there are today fewer excuses than ever before for not controlling insulin levels. As general manager at pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk, which has its base for the Gulf at Dubai Healthcare City, Henrik Bendix Dahl is at the forefront of the battle against poor compliance in diabetes. The good news, he says, is that health professionals are now armed with much better weapons for fighting diabetes. “Physicians who treat people with diabetes today have much better treatment opportunities than in the past, he says. “Physicians prescribe insulin to many people with diabetes because this is an effective way to keep blood sugar under control. The use of insulin in treating diabetes is nothing new. However, the past decade has seen firms such as Novo Nordisk develop improved ‘smart’ insulin that is starting to yield better results. “Modern insulin has provided physicians with a better tool to get patients in good control versus ‘human insulin’ which was developed many years ago, he claims. “Physicians are aware that modern insulin gives fewer episodes of low blood sugar, and modern insulin is also more convenient to use, so it helps the physician to improve treatment compliance and outcome. The main advantage of this new breed of insulin is that it greatly reduces the

strong leaDershIP Is key for Measurable groWth tEcoM investments’ story is very much intertwined with Dubai’s story. his highness, Shiekh Mohammed bin rashid al Maktoum, envisioned in 1998 that the Knowledge Economy will play a big role in the development of Dubai. hence in 2000, we started to build Dubai internet city (Dic), where the world’s best technology companies now have their headquarters in the Middle East. Dic was quickly followed by Dubai Media city (DMc), which quickly became and still is the regional hub of knowledge workers in the media industry. Dubai Knowledge Village (DKV) followed to host companies that provided undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education to Dubai’s quickly growing cadre of knowledge workers. tEcoM investments was formed in 2005 to manage a rapidly growing portfolio of business parks. to date, tEcoM continues to develop and operate 11 business parks, including the new fashion, design and luxury hub, Dubai Design District, or d3. With Dubai’s growth accelerating, the time is right for tEcoM investments to embark on a number of initiatives, including d3 and new commercial buildings in line with market demand. tEcoM investments has more projects in the pipeline. To realise the full potential of these opportunies, TECOM encourages financiers to collaborate with us. tEcoM also invites investors and developers to explore opportunities to develop offices, multi-family residences, academic institutions, student accommodation, retail complexes, hotel initiatives, and industry-specific facilities. Join us in investing, realising, and creating the future of Dubai.

taQa’s attituDe to BriBery: zero tolerance
msabeh.ca@gmail.com
SABEH AYOUN RESUME & PORTFOLIO 2017
Why countering BriBery matters?
• Understand what constitutes bribery and the risks • Understand the legal framework How many bribes are paid each year?
More than $1 trillion are paid in bribes in year (source: World Bank Institute)
That means 1 out of every 30$ of GDP in the world is being paid in bribes, and some of the worst affected are the poorer countries.
• Understand the damage that bribery can do to Taqa
and society • Identify and counter bribery risks and how to respond to bribery demands • Understand your obligations as an employee and how to report concerns, suspicions or breaches of bribery or seek advice

“That’s the way things work hereits different…..”
Bribery affects all countries – some of the larger scandals recently have taken pace not in the developing world but in developed countries. Each time a company pays a bribe it is contributing, even in a small way, to perpetuating a system of corruption that embeds poverty and inequality. stopping this supply-side bribery is vital if the fight against corruption is to be successful. hoW BriBes are paiD Hospitality or travel expenses may be another route for bribery Example The company pays for the decision maker on a contract, perhaps with his or her family, to go on a lavish holiday described as a training course. Or the company may entertain a buyer frequently and excessively with the aim of grooming the buyer for more substantial bribery.
