camp olami A Jewish Camping Experience Camp Olami is dedicated to developing strong, positive identities in its campers. Our Ackerberg Family Campsite provides the ideal environment for making friends, discovering Jewish values, gaining knowledge, building trust, learning teamwork and having fun. New skills and friendships await campers each day. All campers will enjoy swimming in our beautiful Numero-Steinfeldt outdoor pool for free-swim. Campers will also make use of the Barbara Ziman Pentelovitch Memorial indoor pool for swim lessons three days each week, taught by a team of certified Water Safety Instructors. Arts & crafts, sports & games, music, drama, Judaics, Israeli culture, nature, dance and special events are just some of the activities that campers will experience. Each year we look forward to hosting several Israeli Shlichim who provide a unique cultural perspective and enhance the Jewish component of the Camp Olami experience. Other highlights include field trips, theme weeks, over/under nights, all-camp programs, Family Nights and Kabbalat Shabbat celebrations. We offer something for everyone. Camp Olami strives to enrich the lives of children by teaching life skills in a fun, safe, Jewish environment while creating lasting friendships and memories. Register today and feel the Ruach! 13 - a grown-up story about growing up! Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, Book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn A FULLY STAGED PRODUCTION! For youth entering grades 7–12 June 28–July 30, 2010 (No camp july 2) 12-year old New Yorker Evan Goldman is surrounded by Rabbis. After chanting to him, one of them explains that when a boy has his Bar Mitzvah, he becomes an adult. As the Rabbis reveal that they're actually other New York kids, Evan tells the audience about how stressful turning 13 is—especially since his parents are getting divorced and he's under pressure to have the best Bar Mitzvah imaginable. Just as Evan thinks maybe things will be fine, his mother calls to tell him they're moving to Indiana. Making new friends and surviving the school year is going to be easier said than done… With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, 13 is a hilarious, high-energy musical for all ages about discovering that “cool” is where you find it, and sometimes where you least expect it. This intensive 5-week program will teach the fundamentals of theater, music, and dance—all in the process of creating a fullystaged production of the recent Broadway hit, 13! All participants get the opportunity to perform in the show and work with professional theater artists who will coach them in the development of their acting, singing, and dance skills. In addition to staging the show, participants will engage in daily theater and improv games that help them build confidence and create vibrant characters on stage, engage in workshops that provide a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes aspects of theater such as costume and set design, go swimming in the JCC's outdoor pool, and make meaningful friendships through the theater ensemble they'll build! For the first time in my life I didn't feel the rush of relief after performing, but as I walked off the stage after my last act, a rush of sadness came over me. I wanted to perform over and over again. I didn't want ArtsFest to end and didn't want to have to depart from my new friends. It was not a competition, it was just a bunch of kids coming to meet people, learn, and have fun. I already miss ArtsFest and cannot wait for next year!” -2009 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® teen “My favorite part was when my band's original came together and it sounded perfect, learning the "big riff" of Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke, the final show, making endless amounts of new friends, the first day, second, third, fourth and fifth days, all-night rock band tournaments with room-mates and host family, the final show, evening activities, inside jokes, basically the entire week was fantastic.” -2009 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® teen Questions or to get involved, contact Donna Garber at 952.381.3374 or by e-mail at dgarber@sabesjcc.org. host an israeli This summer, Camp Olami is bringing four staff from Israel known as Shlichim (emissaries). Shlichim are in their early twenties and most have just finished their army service. These talented individuals will be here for the summer as part of our camp community working with our staff to bring Israel a little closer to us. We are seeking warm, welcoming families to house our Shlichim and be their home-away-from-home this summer. Please consider opening our home to an Israeli guest for approximately three weeks. This can be a fun experience for you and your family. Many of our Shlichim and host families form lasting relationships, maintaining contact with each other long after the summer has ended. Shlichim, in turn, are delighted to entertain their host families when they visit Israel. This program clearly strengthens the ties between the American Jewish community and Israel. Don’t miss your chance to take part in this enriching experience! If you are interest in housing a Shaliach this summer, please contact Donna Garber at 952.381.3374 or dgarber@sabesjcc.org.
