and unlock a SuPer PoWer the magic of a good book is its ability to transport you some place completely different than where you are as you read it. reading becomes an escape. You want to go to Mars or Saturn? You want to walk around in an 18th century village? You can do that right now. Some people have the uncanny ability to lose themselves in anything—phonics lessons or science articles, it doesn’t matter. the search for Pit Pat is thrilling. descriptions of condensation forming are riveting. but that’s not true for everyone or at least for all forms of writing. Sometimes you have to work harder as the reader to get your kids to want to listen. When little readers learn that books can take them anywhere—even if it’s only certain books—they suddenly possess a super power. reading is no longer a chore and it becomes a fun part of the day. —Madeline


Happy New year usher in the Year of the rooster with spirit Many of the traditions surrounding asian lunar new Year that are familiar to our broader pop culture are tied to superstitions for how to increase wealth and good luck in the coming year. the celebrations date back more than 4,000 years, combining traditions from different ideologies. our school will focus on dressing in festive colors and textures. read Bringing in the New Year by Grace lin with your scholar to learn more about preparing for the new year.

Five scholars on Multicultural Day dress to celebrate Asian heritage. all scholars are invited to wear red and gold on February 3, 2017. Sa-bh has a history of celebrating asian lunar new Year with crafts and story time in 2015 and a professional dragon dance in 2016. Families hope to bring more luck to the school in 2017 with in-class activities. third Grade happens to be presenting their ancient china Pbl museums on Feb. 3. check with your scholar’s teacher for more information. 100th Day Scholars dress like Centenarians to celebrate Let’s flashback to the first time SA-BH marked 100 days of school and hopefully find some inspiration for this year’s spirit day. Aging Kindergarteners and First Graders to look 100 years old is serious business for some families. Try these ideas on February 10 Wig, Spray Hair Color, or Baby Powder Scarf or Hat Glasses Moustache, Beard Pearls Cane Shawl Spirit days are for fun, so there’s really no wrong way to celebrate the 100th time you enter SA-BH. What’s Happening Next Month Two spirit days, two days off, and schedule changes to prepare for state tests Early Arrival Feb. 2 Doors open early for Third Graders who must be in the building by 7:30 a.m. Asian Lunar New Year Feb. 3 Everyone is invited to wear red to symbolize good luck Black History Month Assemblies and activities will be incorporated into school curriculum. Keep an eye out for announcements about special dance performances. Parent Council Meeting Feb. 16 - 8 a.m. Come to Mr. Tarbell’s Science room for an open forum to ask

questions and offer feedback to the school. Parent Council is all the adult family members of our school community. No School Feb. 20 - 21 SA is closed only Monday and Tuesday unlike other schools that are closed all week. If your scholar will miss more days for vacation, tell the Main Office the absence is due to vacation. Have an idea for a play-date or want to share information about a mini camp? Families discuss where to send scholars for days off in the SA-BH Facebook groups.
