Letter from the Board President Looking back at 2019, we see a year of great transition for the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The Garden continued its mission to inspire the people of San Antonio and South Texas to connect with plants and understand their importance in our lives, just as it has done for the past 39 years. Through the success of the GROW Campaign Phase II, the Garden is poised to meet a new decade of stunning botanical collections; rare and endangered plant conservation; life-changing educational programming for children, adults, and families; and events celebrating art, music, and fun for everyone in the community. 2019 was pivotal for the Garden as we transitioned from a city entity to a private nonprofit. The Garden also became fully engaged with a dedicated team of professionals, including horticulturalists, gardeners, educators, program managers, staff, and volunteers. Highlighting the impact of this world-class garden, 2019 brought the best botanical displays in the region and programs such as the Children’s Vegetable Garden—one of the oldest such gardens in the U.S., CHEF (Culinary Health Education for Families) teaching children and parents healthy eating and cooking at home, nature walks and yoga for overall wellness, and school tours and camps serving children of all ages and economic backgrounds. These were just a few of the accomplishments and proud moments for the Garden with much more to see and experience in the coming year. The 2019 year also ended with new and exciting leadership for the Garden. After an extensive nationwide search, we were extremely pleased to welcome Sabina Carr as the Garden’s new chief executive officer. Sabina came to us from the Atlanta Botanical Garden with a wealth of experience and knowledge. Additionally, we were very happy to welcome Karen Greenwood as the new board president for 2020 and wish her the best. It has been my great honor to serve as board president of this beautiful garden. Looking ahead, the Garden will begin an exciting transformational journey under Sabina’s leadership as we anticipate the many milestones and accomplishments to be celebrated in the Garden’s 40th year and beyond.
