Each day at the Garden, nature’s resilience is on display. We witness the power of the Garden to be a place of respite, renewal, and learning for our community. So with sharp attention to protect and showcase plants, a focused approach to organizational best practices, and a deep commitment to serve our entire community, the leadership and staff at the San Antonio Botanical Garden launched into 2021 with bold aspirations for the Garden to continue as an integral part of a vibrant and strong San Antonio.
A highlight of our 2021 accomplishments was the passage of a five-year strategic plan, which sets a vision for a world-class garden. The plan outlines a roadmap to financial sustainability, promises to care for our plants and facilities, expands our impactful programs, and heightens our standards for organizational operations.
At the heart of the plan is a commitment to open the gates of the Garden wide to achieve greater equity for community visitation and participation. In 2021, we reached a record 12,000 member households and more than doubled our largest attendance to over 368,000 annual guests.
In 2021, we responded to the unprecedented challenges from the pandemic by resuming school tours (50% serving Title I schools) and expanding culinary, wellness, and conservation programs — all with strategies to surpass pre-pandemic levels.
Art took center stage in the Garden through the Frida Kahlo Oasis exhibition, featuring a stylized version of Kahlo’s iconic home and garden, Casa Azul. The exhibit provided an intimate look into the beloved artist’s life and work, while serving as a vivid reminder of how the plants surrounding us inspire. Frida Kahlo Oasis reached over 125,000 guests and led to a membership increase of over 2,000 households.
The Garden also hosted the Texas debut of the international winter lights show, Lightscape, with 112,000 tickets sold. The show featured 10 monumental light displays created by Texas-based and international artists and became an instant holiday tradition for local families.
Both Frida Kahlo Oasis and Lightscape further establish the Garden as an innovative leader in public art displays at botanical gardens, deepening our impact as a living museum of plants.
The 2021 winter storm challenged our gardeners like no other, but through their dedicated and capable care they minimized plant loss and assured a strong recovery. Our exhibits were surrounded with exceptional horticulture as never before, and plans moved forward to expand our Rare and Endangered Garden and revitalize the ever-popular WaterSaver Lane.
As 2021 ended, the San Antonio Botanical Garden posted its most successful financial year in history — Splendor in the Garden netted $308,165 (over $100,000 more than any previous gala), membership revenue grew 72% above budget, and 2021 net operating surplus exceeded budget by $2,940,518.
It is a testament to the passion and commitment of our donors, partners, volunteers, members, board, and staff that we rose above challenges and reached historic success. We invested in bold, dynamic, and aspirational leadership in our CEO, Sabina Carr, and we are dedicated to serve the San Antonio community as we achieve our vision of being a world-class botanical garden. On behalf of the San Antonio Botanical Garden, thank you for your continued support.
