Moving Hawai‘i Forward a m e s s ag e f r o m t h e p r e s i d e n t

“Seeing the quality of work being produced in Hawai‘i, I am extremely hopeful about the future of our community and am honored to be a member of AIA Honolulu.” – Charles Kaneshiro, AIA 2010 President, AIA Honolulu www.aiahonolulu.org ach year since 1958,

Hawai‘i’s architecture community has honored design excellence through the AIA Honolulu Annual Design Awards. The state’s oldest program of its type, the Design Awards recognizes the most outstanding achievements of our AIA members’ submitted works as determined by an esteemed panel of our peers. From small-home renovations to multimillion-dollar resort projects, each entry brings unique challenges and showcases our

architects’ innovative solutions. This year’s Design Awards submissions met these complex challenges fearlessly. Jurors were struck by the entries’ success in balancing a modern aesthetic with retention of design features appropriate to our island home and lifestyle. Submissions utilized the latest technological advances to the fullest, yet remained wonderfully humane to the user. This delicate balancing act is just one of the achievements we celebrate with our members in the Design Awards this year. Another critical theme to mention continues to be sustainability. It was clear during

jury deliberation this year that “green” is no longer a design option but a design standard; members of our profession have accepted the responsibility of seeking out sustainable solutions for the community that we all share. Seeing the quality of work being produced in Hawai‘i, I am extremely hopeful about the future of our community and am honored to be a member of AIA Honolulu. Charles Kaneshiro, AIA 2010 President, AIA Honolulu

2010 Design Awards Jurors

Russell Chung, FASLA, LEED AP Russell Chung is the executive vice president at PBR Hawai‘i. Chung graduated from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1980 and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, in 1982. Chung has served as president and trustee for the ASLA’s Hawai‘i Chapter. Chung’s practice includes design and master planning for resorts, housing, commercial, educational institutions, airports, parks and golf courses. Chung has received more than a dozen landscape design awards.

James G. Freeman, AIA James Freeman is a founding principal of FSC Architects, and has practiced architecture in Hawai‘i and throughout Asia for the past 22 years. Before forming FSC Architects, he was a vice president at WATG. Freeman’s pioneering effort, along with creating a unique concept for a sustainable community for Hawai‘i, drew the attention of President Clinton who awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation from the President’s Council for Sustainable Development. As AIA Honolulu president in 2002, Freeman lead the chapter office in its decision to move, go green and become Hawai‘i’s first LEED-CI-Gold certified project.

Kelly Irvine, AIA As co-founder and principal at Collaborative Studio LLC, Kelly Irvine participates in all phases of the design and construction process, including production and management. A graduate of Cornell University, she has worked in professional offices both in Honolulu and San Diego. In 2004, Irvine joined Urban Works Inc. as a project architect, and managed the design and construction of schools, single- and multi-family residences and small hotel projects. Irvine also teaches design studio as an adjunct professor at the University of Hawai‘i School of Architecture.

Kris Palagi, Associate AIA While an undergraduate at Montana State University’s School of Architecture, Kris Palagi developed an interest in alternative design/ build approaches. He worked with William Massie on the “Big Sky House,” published in Dwell Magazine in 2002. On the island of Kaua‘i, Kris interned and was elevated to project manager for DeJesus Architecture. Projects included the 2009 AIA Honolulu Design Award of Merit for “Kilauea Residence” and the 2009 Distinguished Entrant for “Anahola Cottage.” Palagi started Cogent Design with his current business partner, Jon Kegle, in 2005, and continues to practice.

“An honest and powerful design response to site, use and materials, this project stands poetically in the landscape while leading by example with an unpretentious look at global environmental issues today.” –Jurors’ Comment

The Jack C. Lipman, AIA Members’ Choice Award was established in 1999 in honor of one of the Hawai‘i chapter’s distinguished past presidents. The recipient of this award is recognized as having achieved an oustanding level of design, appropriate to the climate and culture of Hawai‘i, as voted by fellow AIA Honolulu members.

the facility’s goal is the promotion of conservation, specifically of tropicalplant diversity and protection of rare and endangered plant species. Vladimir Ossipoff designed the original campus facilities, and it was important for the team to design the new structure with Ossipoff ’s architectural approach in

mind. The project features, among other things, reclaimed tropical hardwood siding and a 30 kw/hr photovoltaic array. The two-tiered roof maximizes the amount of available daylight for natural illumination and the upper gardens are watered with a 25,000-gallon rainwater catchment system.

the Hanahau‘oli School is a private elementary school located in the Makiki neighborhood of Honolulu. The school provides a richly traditional learning environment that celebrates and promotes the students’ creative work. In the words of the entrant, “In order to preserve its traditions, maintain its academic mission and improve curriculum opportunities for learning, Hanahau‘oli undertook a long-range master-planning effort to intelligently grow and change with the times. A primary concern was to preserve the natural surroundings and buildings that contribute to the Hanahau‘oli experience.” The new Po‘e classroom and administration building houses, among other things, multiage classrooms, a communications center, a multipurpose boardroom, a working garden and an after-school-care room. The students and faculty used the construction process as a learning opportunity, celebrating various milestones throughout. They marked the demolition of old buildings by honoring them and participated in the blessing of the new building. 

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann selects the Mayor’s Choice Award from among all the entries. AIA Honolulu is appreciative of the City and County of Honolulu’s continued participation in our annual Design Awards program. he “Community of Hope” design creates

smaller, more intimate living campuses and neighborhoods, which, when combined, stimulates a spirit of community missing in the high-rise housing developments dating to an earlier time. Three winged towers were deconstructed and separated into three smaller-scale towers. These smaller neighborhoods, coupled with 2 2 A I A D e s i g n Awa r d s 2 010 •••

the new and renovated low-rise housing units and the creation of a village commercial center that surround the tower, transform this project into what is envisioned to be a healthy, sustainable, mixed-income residential environment where residents can live and play. Mayor Mufi Hannemann commends the Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) for transforming this troubled housing development into a community that all residents will take pride in.
