T

he Ghost Town at the Clark County Museum consists of buildings from the Last Frontier Village, and one modern re-creation. The village was a great attraction during the 1950s and 1960s on the Strip. This view shows the museum’s re-created blacksmith shop, and the Old Sweet Shoppe. The buildings were moved from Las Vegas Boulevard to Fort Lucinda, today’s Hacienda Casino near Hoover Dam. They were moved to the museum in 1979.

Did You Know? ‘Dobie’ Doc, a well-known local character, collected artifacts and buildings from ghost towns in Nevada. His collection was the basis of the Last Frontier Village. The toll cabin from Lamoille, the jail from Tuscarora, and the 1950 Old Sweet Shop were relocated to the museum. The outside jail cell was originally used during Helldorado Days in downtown Las Vegas.

May

T

he first home moved to the Clark County Museum was the Beckley House. This was built in 1912 for $2,500, by Will Beckley for his bride Leva Grimes. The Beckleys lived in the house for the rest of their lives. After Leva moved out of the house in 1978, the family offered the home to the museum and it was moved to the grounds in 1979. Restored over four years, it was opened to the public in 1983.

Will’s brother Jake Beckley was the passenger on the first airplane to land in Las Vegas, on May 7, 1920. The plane flew over the Beckley home, and Jake dropped a doll to his niece Virginia, who was waiting in the front yard with many of her friends.

Did You Know? Henderson was not founded until 1942. Originally called Basic Townsite, it was renamed for Charles Henderson, a former U. S. Senator from Nevada and Chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which funded the building of the Basic Magnesium Plant. Though Senator Henderson never visited the town, he did send an autographed photograph to the community.

he Giles-Barcus House was originally built in Goldfield, Nevada, in 1924. It replaced a home destroyed in the great fire of 1923. Edwin Giles, whose family lived in the home, was a mining engineer in the area. The house was eventually moved to Clark County, where it was relocated to Giles street and became an antique store called The Odd Shop. It was moved to the museum grounds in 1991.

Did You Know? When built, the Giles-Barcus House was a roomy home for Goldfield. The house used some found materials, including the front door. The door had been made for Scotty’s Castle in Death Valley, where Edith Giles Barcus was able to get the door, and installed it on the house. The windows in the front door are from a Pierce-Arrow automobile in the Goldfield dump.
