MINUTES OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 10/08/2011 1. Open Meeting The Meeting was opened by the President, Lynton Donisthorpe, at 7.30 pm.

2. Welcome He welcomed the Patron, Mr Neil Dansie, Life Members Bob Woods, Graham MacTavish, Daryl Harper, Bill Penley, Max Bartlett and Graham Slater. Lynton also recognised the presence of Geoff Sando (East Torrens Scorer) and Bob Eldridge (Para Districts Cricket Association).

3. Minutes Silence A minute’s silence was afforded to past umpires Gordon Bryce, Graham Horlin-Smith and John Fitzgerald who had passed away since the last AGM. 4. Apologies Apologies were received from Peter Raftery, Peter Weddell, John Jamieson, Rob Noble, Simon Fry, John Biddiss, Steve Knobben, Milind Gawde, John Warner, Kevin Coombe, Bill Kidd, Greg Frost, Geoff Behn, Al Croft, Hank Middleton, Bob Glovitch, Tony Laintoll, Max O’Connell, Mick Sheppard, Josh Harmer, Bob Pritchard and Kym Perrin.

5. Minutes of 2010 AGM The Minutes of the 2010 Annual Meeting as presented in the Annual Report were adopted on the motion of John Bell and seconded by Terry Page.

6. Business arising from 2010 AGM There was no business arising from the 2010 AGM. 7. Presidents Report The President spoke to a few points in his report with the main ones being the change in our Association with the new Constitution, which let more members becoming involved in various sub committees. He also highlighted the retirement of Daryl Harper and congratulated him on a great International and First Class career and thanked him for his continuing support. Simon Fry was also congratulated for his achievements in the past season. Lynton also thanked the Umpiring Manager of SACA, Neil Poulton, for his support and assistance as well as the SACA Cricket department. The need for sponsorship is vital to our Association and St Johns Road Wines, Coverdrive Couriers and The Royal Coach support us well. He also paid tribute to the Committee for their untiring efforts during the year and Tim Pellew for Sticky Wicket publications. In closing he highlighted the support needed for our Presentation Night Dinner in coming seasons.

Max Bartlett in moving that the Report be received thanked Lynton for stepping up at a difficult time and continuing to lead the Association into the future.

8. Correspondence There was no correspondence relevant to the meeting.

9. Secretary’s Report The Secretary moved that his report be received and adopted with him highlighting the great work done by many of our predecessors in making our Association what it is today. He also highlighted the efforts of the Members and thanked them for selling Community Lottery

tickets to the value of $1460. Lynton thanked Bill for his efforts in completing his 2 year term after “retiring” last year.

10. Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer was pleased to add to his report that we had a surplus of $3200 due to receiving proceeds from the Community Lottery and a Government Grant of $1600. The books had been checked by only one of the Auditors and it will not be until mid-September before Simon Fry can do his audit. Simon’s report is to be given at the first available General Meeting. Several debts had to be written off due to former members leaving our ranks. The Report was received subject to the audit by Simon Fry. Bruce was thanked for his five years as Treasurer and has asked to step down as he is finding work and other commitments too difficult to juggle. This has created an extraordinary vacancy to be filled.

11. Social Report The Social Report was presented by Ed Branson. He thanked the loyal supporters of our Association who attended social functions and those who assisted at meetings by being BBQ cooks, selling raffle tickets, providing prizes etc. As the coming season marks our Centenary he wants to arrange several functions especially in November (our beginning) and the Presentation Dinner. Anyone wishing to join the Social Committee will be most welcome. In closing he thanked Lynton Donisthorpe, Tom McLeod, John Ketley, Brenton Schnell and Michial Farrow for their contributions. He also wished Tom McLeod well in his move to Paris to study and later work.

12. Election of Offices All positions coming up for election were declared vacant by the President and the Secretary asked to read the nominations. President – only nomination Lynton Donisthorpe elected unopposed. Vice President – only nomination Ed Branson elected unopposed, Secretary – only one nomination – Michial Farrow elected unopposed. Nominations were called from the floor for Treasurer which had only one nomination – Daniel Waters who was willing to be nominated – elected unopposed. A ballot for the 2 Committee vacancies had 3 nominations – Max Bartlett, John Ketley and Brenton Schnell resulting in Max and John being elected. Brenton was thanked for his interest in nominating.

Election of Auditors took place after much discussion regarding the amount of volunteer time we receive from Simon Fry and the impact it has on his ever decreasing personal time.

Jeff King offered to help if needed and Peter Weddell has also offered his services. Bob Woods and Jeff King were then nominated as our auditors with a letter of thanks going to Simon for past services.

During the ballot Neil Poulton spoke on behalf of SACA. He mentioned that the evolvement of SACUSA was viewed positively by SACA who consider it an important part of cricket in SA. He thanked and congratulated the Committee on their efforts. Training and Development of umpires is inclusive for all umpires where ever they umpire throughout the state. He also thanked the Umpire Coaches and Senior Umpires for their part in training our umpires. A possible new venue for meetings is Thebarton Oval which is still being negotiated. He thanked Prospect DCC for providing their clubrooms over the past seasons.

There has been a positive response and appreciation of umpires in captains’ reports. Also during this time Graham Slater was presented with his 300 Game Service Award by Daryl Harper.

14. General Business a. Honoraria of $500 for the Secretary, $300 for both President and Treasurer was passed on the motion of David Little and Bob Woods. b. The method of payment of yet to be determined subscriptions is still being finalised. A subscription formula is still to be determined after discussions with Neil. Any umpires who have already registered need not do it again. c. Centenary and History was raised. Research by Kristen Thomas indicates November as our centenary with special events planned. Volunteers for a Centenary sub-Committee are needed. d. Sponsorship is still being sought. Adrian Drosd mentioned that the Southwark Hotel would reciprocate our support if umpires met there after Saturday matches. The Committee is exploring advertising sponsors for on field and off field shirts as well as sponsors for Medals on Bradman Medal night. e. Boot Camp registration forms need to be completed and in future the Camp will be every 2 years at different locations. Availability to do it on line is not yet available. f. The records of games umpired was raised and Neil stated that any discrepancies could be tracked down via Match Reports and Appointments via My Cricket website. g. FeBLUary Round will begin the first weekend in February. h. Changes to By Laws will be given at special By Law meetings but in summary A Grade playing hours to be 11 – 6, B Grade 12 – 6 with other grades unchanged. State Bank Shield now U 16 from U 17 previously. There is the possibility of a Super League in planning stages. i. In closing the President wished all well for the coming season and gave best wishes to Tom McLeod for his new life of study and work overseas as an interpreter.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Lynton Donisthorpe)

SACUSA Members, It is with great pleasure that I present the President’s report of our Association’s business for the 2011–2012 year.

The discovery in July that our centenary was upon us (not years away as previously thought) had us scurrying to find ways to celebrate. The organization of centenary celebration events in addition to other business placed the Executive under considerable pressure and took our focus preseason.

The significant changes introduced last season have developed further, with us fostering more Scorer and state wide Association involvement. The Association produced a working paper on scorer integration for presentation to the Grade Cricket Committee and also held a general meeting of scorers this year. The Scorer sub-committee members Chris Miles, Neil Ricketts and Geoff Sando are enthusiastic and are providing some really good ideas to balance scorer club loyalties with those of SACUSA. The introduction of electronic scoring to 1st class matches may present SACUSA with an opportunity to contribute on behalf of scorer members by way of training in the next year. While still a long term plan, scorer membership increased to 7 this year, which is an upward trend we must work hard to maintain.

Umpire membership outside SACA has been static this season and is an area the new Executive must address. More umpires are getting involved via the umpire registration fee and SACUSA must make the most of this opportunity. Finding things that make SACUSA membership attractive to these groups is our biggest challenge.

The reduced Executive committee size is presenting us with some EC succession planning challenges. While originally identified as a potential issue, it may soon present us with difficulty finding future presidents due to constitutional qualification requirements. The second practical issue has been the relatively small number of Non-Executive members participating in sub-committees, which is the preface upon which the reduced committee is based. Last year I reported that more development of this model was required and this is certainly still true.

Increased sub-committee participation is required before we will see the benefits of our current model.

This year, we changed our monthly meeting venue to Thebarton Oval which was very successful. The larger and more comfortable venue resulted in significant increases in attendance at meetings, although we were not able to achieve displaying our honour boards etc. on the walls as hoped. Unfortunately, the cost of Thebarton will be beyond SACUSA next season and we will have to move again. We would all love to return to Adelaide Oval, however it is increasingly unlikely that this will be possible and we are looking for a permanent home again. Centrally located quality venues that we can afford are very scarce, so we may be forced to move a little further from the CBD. I appeal to all members to continue your support of the Association at monthly meetings even if it means an extra 10 minutes travel, or going across town, which is a likely outcome.

The winter umpire training managed by Neil Poulton and assisted by some umpires has again produced some excellent new umpires who officiated in Grade Cricket matches.

Congratulations to all new umpires, particularly Cain Kemp for winning the best 1st year umpire award. I hope it is the first of many seasons enjoying umpiring for you all.

Congratulations to our representative umpires this year. Elite Panel umpire Steve Davis has again had an excellent year as one the ICC’s most consistently high standard umpires. In the Australian domestic competitions, we saw Simon Fry and Paul Wilson have excellent seasons.

Paul has had excellent appointments and Simon continues to gain respect with appointment to his 4th Sheffield Shield Final. Congratulations to Andy Collins, Luke Uthenwoldt, Craig Thomas and John Biddiss who represented us in the Futures League and Woman’s National League competitions, and also Craig Thomas for his appointment to the Australian Under 17 National Championships.

Congratulations to Luke Uthenwoldt for being named the Grade Cricket Umpire of the year at the Bradman Medal presentation and officiating in his 1st A grade grand final with Andy Collins who stood in his 10th.

Congratulations to those who achieved milestones, particularly members appointed to SACA Grand Finals, Andy Collins for achieving the very significant achievement of 100 A grade matches and Kumar Jeyakkumar, Jeff King, Stuart Rudd and Craig Thomas for their first A grade matches.

The Association’s close affiliation with SACA and contribution to Cricket continued through our representation on numerous committees including Grade Cricket Committee, Game Development, Bylaws, Programming and Permits. Shane Bernhardt and Cate Ryan have been strong supporters of our Association again this year, particularly in conjunction with Neil Poulton for their support with the Umpires Centenary round in grade cricket and providing our centenary caps. Neil Poulton has again supported our Association strongly, pushing for wider Association membership to umpires all over the state.

Sponsorship is a challenge for us in difficult financial times and I would especially like to thank long-time supporter Coverdrive Couriers and continuing sponsors from last year, St John’s Road Wines and Country Club Hotels & Resorts, your support is very much appreciated.

Umpiring numbers have been a struggle again this season. This year the loss of a significant number of experienced A grade umpires presented challenges. This is an issue that will affect umpire standing in cricket and SACUSA will assist Neil Poulton wherever possible to address this issue. The significant number of ‘midweek’ games and the lack of umpire availability on weekends has contributed to us again struggling to fill appointments for all SACA matches each week this season. Our Association has a significant role in umpire retention by providing a supportive environment for umpires both on and off the field, which is a role we take seriously.

I urge all members to be active within the Association and make a commitment to umpiring by being available for the entire season.

Congratulations to Sam Raphael from Adelaide Cricket Club, winning the 54th Bradman Medal.

Sam this year realised his great potential and had a wonderful season opening the batting and appeared set for a big score each time he batted. Congratulations to the winners of all other SACUSA medals on Bradman Medal night. It was good to see an increase in the number of umpires attending the evening this year.

Former umpires will remain an important part of our Association and we will continue to keep in touch with them and solicit their involvement. Unfortunately only one former umpire joined as an Associate member this year which is down on previous years. A number of past and life members did however make significant contributions to the centenary celebrations serving on the centenary committee. It was also great to see wives of late life members attending events this year in Pat Watson, Jill Weeks and Bev McLeod and is an area we can expand. We did not hold any former umpire functions this year and it is an area that the new committee needs to address.

This year’s combined Centenary/Presentation dinner in May was again held at the West Lakes Golf Club and was by far our best yet. There was a certain emotion in the air due to the “Centenary Factor”. No doubt the special touches of past partners for every attendee, birthday cakes, toast to SACUSA and the very professional MC work by Ben Hook all contributed to make it a very memorable evening. If you were part of the increased number of 95 attending, I’m sure you’ll agree that those who could not attend missed a really memorable evening. The Association could not have had a better finale to our Centenary season and a credit to the Centenary/Social committee. The event deserved the rave feedback we received from members attending for the first time and from guests outside of SACUSA. Thank you to our friend Ben Hook who is without doubt a class act and complimented and enhanced the evening. I can’t say how appreciative I am that Ben supports us as he does, and for the most modest fee possible! I would like to re-iterate my comments last year that this event should be an essential part of the season for all members. Our strong commitment to maintain the standard at a high level means that the event is not cheap. However given our umpiring payments, I urge all members to budget to attend this event each year from their umpire payments. This event makes Associations stronger and its members closer. SACUSA should thank Max Bartlett for his foresight in getting this event off of the ground 10 years ago.

I’ve mentioned SACUSA’s history, discovery of our centenary, partners at the presentation dinner to name a few. All of this would have remained unknown if it hadn’t been for the countless hours of research by Kristen Thomas who was awarded the John Wilson award this year. John would have been delighted that the Associations history was uncovered and I’m sure proud that Kristen was recognised for this work with the award named in his honour.

Thank you to those members who served our Association on the Executive Committee over the past twelve months.

Your Vice President Ed Branson has been incredibly active again this season, he has been; leader of the Centenary committee, social sub-committee and awards sub-committee, as well as member of the scorer sub-committee and SACA permits committee. Not only that, he has arranged drinks and meat for BBQ’s etc., Ed has been an invaluable assistant to me in working our way through many Association issues that have presented this year.

Michial Farrow took over as Secretary and has brought his own no nonsense, efficient and thorough approach to that role which has been invaluable.

Daniel Waters was elected as Treasurer at the AGM, unfortunately Daniel was not able to commit to the role due to work commitments and he left the committee at the February Executive meeting. The Executive decided to handle Treasury within the committee for the remainder of the year rather than elect a new treasurer and Michial Farrow and myself shared the Treasury role during this period.

Max Bartlett continued to strengthen his ties with SACA Grade clubs as our representative on the Grade Cricket Committee. He has established an excellent rapport with Grade Club representatives who seek his and our Association’s opinion and support. Max has continued as Chairman of the Umpire’s Appointment Panel. There could be no better person for these roles than Max, with his dedication to cricket, umpiring and his extensive umpiring experience.

John Ketley returned to the committee this year and took over as Sponsorship coordinator.

Despite his best efforts, we were not successful in attracting new sponsors. Expanding sponsorship is still high on our agenda. John was also very active on the social sub-committee.

Chris Hollard was again our representative on the Grade Cricket Development Committee.

Chris was again very active looking after property and member of the awards sub-committees as well as providing a wealth of experience on the Executive.

Craig Thomas has made valuable contributions, being heavily involved in the centenary and social sub-committees as well as website updating and Easter planning.

We should not underestimate SACUSA’s role on other SACA Committees such as By-laws where I have represented our Association this year. It is evident that club representatives don’t always have a good understanding of players thoughts when it comes to how we play grade cricket. We spend many hours in the middle with the players and are well placed to provide this feedback, which allows us to make a positive contribution to cricket in SA. I would also like to thank those members and member’s wives who willingly assisted at our monthly meetings and thanks to all members for your assistance cleaning up. I would especially like to thank Brenton Schnell, John Ketley, Brian Litchfield, Terry Murch, Martin Bradshaw and Caron Donisthorpe for their assistance with the BBQ, attendance records, drink sales and raffle prizes and a special mention to Graham MacTavish and Desma MacTavish for donating salads for the BBQ’s.

Tim Pellew has certainly maintained, if not improved, the quality of the Sticky Wicket again this year. The Executive appreciate the considerable time and effort that Tim puts into the production of this professional and interesting publication for our Association.

In conjunction with the VCAUSA President, I facilitated a new initiative for both Associations by arranging a joint committee meeting in a non-Easter year, held on the June long weekend in Penola. Four committee members and wives (if they have them) from both SACUSA and VCAUSA took part with 13 people attending. Not only did it allow us to exchange ideas and learn more about our respective Associations, it gave us a very important partners’ perspective on Easter planning with our wives also attending the meeting. No doubt it assisted Easter planning, but it also gave us a chance to learn from each other and identify where our associations can work together for our mutual benefit. The meeting was so successful that we agreed to repeat it again in 2014.

You may have noticed that the SACUSA presidents report seems larger each year. The facts are that the SACUSA and your executive are involved in more and more activities which I don’t see changing in the near future. The Association has significant challenges ahead which your Executive Committee are addressing. Your continued support through sub-committee involvement, attendance at training, meetings and social functions is essential to make a difference.

On a personal note, my Presidency is virtually at an end. For me, the opportunity to hold office as your President over the past two (and a bit) years has been a privilege. To go into SACUSA’s history books as the President in our Centenary year, propose the toast to SACUSA at the Centenary Dinner, have the president’s position in the centenary photo, captain the Centenary Presidents team, etc. has been a considerable honour. I have enjoyed working with every one of you in the Association and feel a little sad that it has come to an end (if I’m honest).

My sincere thank you to all members, particularly Executive Committee members, for the tremendous support you have all given me during this time.

SECRETARY'S REPORT (Michial Farrow)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA, I would like to present to you my report on the season just gone at this the Centenary Year Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association.

Unfortunately in our centenary season we had the passing of Fred Godson. Fred was a valued Life Member of our Association.

Just before the season launch we discovered, thanks to the great efforts of Kristen Thomas, that the upcoming season was in fact our Centenary Season with SACUA established in November 1911. So it was decided by the Executive Committee that we would have some special events for the centenary. Amongst the events organised was a special November meeting, a photograph of members in front of the Adelaide Oval scoreboard (also celebrating its centenary), a cricket match between the President’s XI and the Vice-President’s XI and rounding out the season with a Centenary Presentation Dinner. We must also thank SACA for dedicating a round of Grade Cricket to the Association for our Centenary and providing all our members with Centenary Caps to wear for the round.

So with all this happening our social committee has had a very busy year headed by Ed Branson. Attendance by our members is still not where we would like it. However those that do attend these events have a very enjoyable time and hopefully we will get more people to our social events in coming seasons. Well done Ed and his hard working sub-committee on another fine effort this year.

The season once again climaxed with the Bradman Medal Dinner Presentation. Congratulations to the winners of all the medals and in particular Sam Raphael of the Adelaide Cricket Club. It was good to see an increase in the number of umpires attending the evening this year.

This year we had our monthly meetings at Thebarton Oval and I am sure that the move to the new location assisted with the increase in attendance at our monthly meetings, however, due to the high costs associated with hiring these rooms we will need to find a new location for the upcoming season.

Congratulation to all our members on the high standard of umpiring displayed through the year.

Not only in Grade Cricket but also at State level where we had Simon Fry, Paul Wilson, Luke Uthenwoldt, Lynton Donisthorpe, Andy Collins, John Biddiss and Craig Thomas performing well and on the international scene we had Steve Davis going about business at his normal high standard. The achievements of many of our members must make Neil and the other coaches very proud, well done gentlemen.

I would also like to thank all members that either sold or bought tickets in the People’s Choice Community Lottery as it has generated nearly $2,000.00 for the Association. It would be remiss of me not to thank our sponsors who without their support the Association would be struggling to provide the benefits it does to our members. So thank you to Coverdrive Couriers, St Johns Road Wines and Country Club Hotels and Resorts.

To Bill Penley and my fellow members of the Executive Committee thank you all for your help and support for what was a very busy year and my first as Secretary. Obituary Alfred (Fred) Godson Born 26th August 1917 Died 4th May 2012, aged 94 Many of us have fond memories of ‘Freddie’, a wonderful, quietly spoken man who attended many of our association functions until his last few years. While small in stature, Fred was large of heart and never known to shirk the harder issues of officiating in cricket, football and indeed life. He began umpiring grade cricket in the 1956/57 season and by the time he retired in the 1973/74 season he had stood in 255 games including 21 Sheffield Shield and 8 international matches in South Australia. During the 1960’s he was also a reserve Test match umpire on 2 occasions. Fred was not only a strong member on the field but also an active committee member serving a total of 16 years to the betterment of our association. These years of service commenced in 1959 and included terms of vice president, president and auditor in the years 1973 to 1975. He was made a life member of SACUSA in 1971.

Fred’s playing career included time at Port Adelaide District Cricket Club where he commenced playing in 1935 and continued until 1955/56. He captained the C grade team to a premiership in 1953 and was awarded life membership of Port Adelaide District Cricket Club. He also played for the Woodville Rechabites club in the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and Largs Bay Cricket Club.

Winters were spent with the South Australian National Football League goal umpiring league football. Here again Fred excelled umpiring many of the greats for a number of years. Eric Freeman, the great all-rounder who played District Cricket, Test Cricket, league and state football for South Australia, related how he and Neil Hawke would tease Fred with farewells at the end of the cricket season only to greet him at the beginning of winter standing in the goals a week or so later! John Causby, another great cricketer said of Fred that he had never heard a bad work spoken of him. Fred was awarded Life Membership of SANFLUA for his outstanding contribution to umpiring.

To further highlight his contribution to sport Fred was a Past President of the Woodville Lawn Bowls Club, an Honorary Member of SACA and awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

TREASURER'S REPORT Glad Jones and Geo McDonough Memorial Trust Funds As a part of the biennial cricket match against the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers Association, trophies are awarded to the best performed South Australian players for overall performance and fielding. These awards are made as a result of trust funds held by the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association from monies donated by former members Gladstone Jones and George McDonough.

The first fund, the Glad Jones Memorial Trust Fund, was established in March 1976 with a donation of $150.00 from Mr. Gladstone Jones for a trophy to be awarded to the best performed player representing South Australia. Two years later Mr. George McDonough made a similar donation, establishing the Geo. McDonough Memorial Trust Fund to enable an award to be made to the best performed fielder during these matches.

The donations were to remain invested at the discretion of the SACUA Committee however in the event that a decision were taken to discontinue the matches in the future, the funds and any interest earned was to be donated to the National Heart Foundation. After the establishment of both funds the Executive committee of the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association was empowered to use the interest earned from both funds to award the trophies after each match.

An increase to the capital invested of $200.00 was made to each fund during the late 1980’s from interest already earned to ensure that a sound basis for interest earning existed and therefore the continuation of the awards.

SOCIAL CONVENOR'S REPORT (Edward Branson) Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

This past season has indeed been an active one for our association. Your Social sub-Committee continued to plan and conduct a variety of activities and was able to work closely with the Centenary sub-Committee to ensure that our Centenary year would be memorable.

I think that members will agree that the regular BBQ and drinks available at our monthly meetings has done much to facilitate interaction and lively camaraderie. Special efforts were made to make our November meeting a memorable celebration of the centenary of SACUA, now SACUSA. As a result of this, two of our members made an offer, which we were only too grateful to accept. Desma and Graham MacTavish prepared all the salads for the rest of the season and provided all the napkins, cutlery and paper plates. I thank them sincerely on behalf of all members for their wonderful work, which has done much to increase our enjoyment of our meetings. Brian Litchfield, Terry Murch and Ron Parsons have continued to cook the BBQ, sometimes in less than ideal conditions, and their great support of SACUSA is also gratefully acknowledged. With members like these five our association is, indeed, well served!

An attempt to organise a night of tenpin bowling before Christmas was, unfortunately, unsuccessful. This was in no way due to the efforts of Brenton Schnell but may indicate that members find it difficult to fit any more activities in the pre-Christmas rush.

The January meeting was again a quiz night, and those members able to stay for the somewhat late start, seemed to enjoy the occasion.

In February, we again organised and conducted a family Fun day at the Semaphore water slide and the 46 attendees, 25 adults and 21 children were actively engaged in mini-golf, bouncing castles, with the Ferris wheel as well as the water slide itself. The Sunday weather was excellent and it was great to meet Paul and Sally Wilsons’ new addition together with both sets of parents. We will need to remember that our more traditionally built members need to bring their own chairs if this event continues! The chicken and salad lunch and soft drinks, all provided as part of the package, ensured that the day was excellent value for money. Caron Donisthorpe continues to be actively involved in this event and her work is also gratefully acknowledged.

The Picnic Centenary President’s V vice President’s Cricket match held in April at Mylor. On a perfect day, it was a truly memorable occasion. Our BBQ stalwarts again performed admirably and Craig Thomas and Mick Sheppard did much to ensure the enjoyment of the day with their organisation and on field leadership of the teams. David Little secured the venue for us and it proved excellent. Thank you David!

The Centenary Presentation Dinner held in May was an outstanding success and details of it appear in the report of the Centenary sub-Committee. The two subcommittees worked together to ensure a memorable night for all attendees. We continue to be grateful to the West Lakes

Golf Club for the ongoing support and this venue continues to provide a pleasant ambience and good food!

There is sometimes some debate, especially at executive level about what constitutes a successful social activity. Some believe that, to be truly successful, an event must attract a large number of members, while others take a somewhat more sanguine approach that recognises the busy nature of most family life and so sees success in terms of the enjoyment of the activity by those who attend. This will continue to be an issue and the new Executive and Social subCommittee will continue to address it. By any measure, our Monthly meetings, with an average attendance of over 70, the Picnic President’s V vice President’s Cricket match with about 80 in attendance and our Annual presentation Dinner with 95 attendees were outstandingly successful.

It has been a pleasure to work with Michial Farrow, John Ketley and Brenton Schnell, and I thank them sincerely for their ongoing efforts. I also thank the members for the way in which you all help with setting up and cleaning up at our monthly meetings. This makes a huge difference and greatly assists. The light hearted banter that goes with the work just adds to the enjoyment.

Our President, Lynton Donisthorpe drops in on most meetings of the sub-committee and his encouragement and support is appreciated and inspirational.

I guess there will be a new team working on the Social side of our association’s activities in the new season and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members for your ongoing support and encouragement.

SA UMPIRING MANAGER (Neil Poulton)

To say the 2011-12 season was busy would be an understatement with umpiring throughout South Australia becoming united in recruitment & training initiatives. The inclusion of both metropolitan and country umpires into SACA’s 12 Carnivals and countless requests for umpiring services from the entire cricket community kept all umpires constantly involved over the entire season.

In running what has been well known as a department of one, my time and resources this year have been stretched but despite this we have had some excellent results.        

Huge umpiring Launch at Adelaide Oval In excess of 300 participants at Level 1 Courses around the state including junior coaches who had to complete the umpiring course as part of their coaching accreditation.

Around 50 new Level 2 Accredited Umpires Continued rollout of standard umpire uniforms through a number of associations.

“100 year celebration of umpiring” round in Grade Cricket Production of Umpire Recruitment and Retention commercials; this coming season being seen on TV Statewide umpiring seminar at Adelaide Oval with over 100 participants each of the 2 days.

Grade Cricket, as usual, was a major part of what we did this season with around 3000 individual appointments being made to cover the states premier competition. Umpiring at a grade level was of a high standard throughout the season, challenges in availability, retirements and a large number of new umpires often meant umpires were required to step up to higher levels or support less experienced umpires whilst ensuring their own performance. This standard could not have been achieved without the assistance of our umpire coaches whose single goal every week is to help umpires improve and enjoy their cricket. My congratulations and thanks to all umpires I worked with over the season for their dedication.

A special thanks to SACUSA and the Executive Committee well lead by Lynton who have continued to improve the way the association runs and has handled change and their new enlarged role in South Australian cricket admirably. I am very pleased at where SACUSA is heading and I know that their standing within both SACA and the general cricket community has grown significantly of the past couple of years.

There are many umpires who achieved milestones, represented SACUSA, SACA, Cricket Australia & the ICC over the past year. These umpires I am sure will be named and recognised throughout this annual report. Rather than repeating these names, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to everyone who excelled, achieved their goals and contributed to the success of both umpiring and cricket in the past season.

To umpires who are pulling up stumps for the last time, you will be missed but you will leave with the knowledge that cricket is better off for your involvement. The game continues; there

will be new challenges and I am sure new success stories. I look forward to the 2012-13 season with excitement.

Para Districts Cricket Association Umpires Report Although we only finished up with 12 or 13 regulars at the end of the season, we are a keen and dedicated bunch, always on the lookout for new recruits. At the recent Statewide Umpiring Forum, all associations were asked to identify how many umpires would be required to ensure all our senior games had two officials – the prospect of an additional 40 seems way beyond expectation. Practically, an additional 10-15 would enable us to cover all grade 1 and 2 games.

We all appreciated our new spray jackets last season, courtesy of subsidy from our association, and look forward to our new ‘walk out’ shirts for the coming season.

We are all now entered on MyCricket and several of our members took advantage of official registration, and were accordingly appointed to a variety of SACA Carnivals. We are aiming for 100% registration for the coming season.

Two members went through official Level 2 accreditation, and two more are currently undertaking the requirements.

As from August, we meet monthly: dinner precedes the formalities, which include updates on changes to Laws and by laws, issues raised by members, and a specific training component, usually with the Cricket Australia training DVD. Our biggest challenge for the coming season will be to improve on the quality of feedback we get from captains, and incorporating this feedback into positive development and improvement of our performance.

CENTENARY REPORT (Edward Branson) Mr President and Members of SACUSA, It was with eager anticipation and a sense of excitement that nine members of the association met at the Royal Coach Motor Inn in August 2011 to begin the planning of our association’s Centenary Year.

The meeting began with Kristen Thomas outlining the evidence that it was to be, indeed, our Centenary in 2011/2012. The evidence pointed to our November monthly meeting being the nearest that we could ascertain to the date of the very first meeting in 1911.

What a year it has been! We participated in the season launch and the preseason training days with a display incorporating aspects of our history and outlining our aims and objectives. This display attracted much comment and it was noted that our centenary coincided with the centenary of the Adelaide Oval scoreboard. With the assistance of SACA, it was arranged that photos would be taken of all umpires and scorers, past and present, in front of the scoreboard.

This was achieved and the photos are now the proud possessions of over 80 umpires and scorers who were able to make themself available.

SACA marked the centenary of the association with a special Umpires and Scorers Centenary Round of Grade Cricket and also presented each umpire with a centenary cap to mark the occasion. Each umpire proudly wore these caps on both days of that round.

Our November meeting was a highlight of the season. Who could forget the interviews conducted by Daryl Harper of four of our former colleagues? We thank Peter Cronin, Bob Woods, Bruce Martin and Peter Weddell for their reminiscences Then Kristen Thomas, in a wonderful presentation, outlined aspects of our associations history. Another highlight of a memorable night! The social sub-committee outdid themselves with a wonderful BBQ and the food and drinks helped lubricate many a conversation. It was wonderful to see so many former umpires and partners at this meeting.

We were grateful to St John’s Road Wines, one of our sponsors, making available a fine Shiraz and a fruity Sauvignon Blanc as our centenary wines, and many members continue to enjoy them.

A perfect day dawned in early April as an old tradition of the association was reinstated, namely the President’s XI versus the vice-President’s XI picnic cricket match. History records that the President’s eleven achieved a convincing victory with notable batting performances by Craig Thomas of the President’s XI and Mick Sheppard of the vice-President’s XI. We thank David Little for his efforts in securing the Mylor Oval for this extravaganza and all who attended agreed that the venue, the weather the food and the whole idea were excellent. Who knows, perhaps this event may again become a feature of future seasons?

The highlight of the year was the annual Presentation Dinner at the West Lakes Golf Club in May 2012. This night had a definite centenary theme with the dolls used to train umpires in positioning on display, the cupcakes iced in SACUSA colours and the amazing table settings

with table names of former committee members, decorated life-member stumps and the incredible place settings pairing each attendee with a former umpire, scorer or partner. We especially thank Kristen Thomas for her considerable efforts in researching and preparing all these place settings and also for her wonderful ongoing work in researching our history. What a moment when the lights were dimmed and nearly 100 candle lit cupcakes shed almost magical light on the scene as our President proposed the Centenary toast! Kim Perrin’s lively interviews of Pat Watson, Jill Weeks and Rachel Fry were another highlight of a memorable evening.

Congratulations to our award winners; A Grade Umpire of the Year Lynton Donisthorpe, B Grade Umpire of the Year Chris Ruediger, C D & Women’s Grade Umpire of the Year Ron Parsons, Umpire Under-age Cricket Umpire of the Year Jurgen Sarwon and our Best First Year Umpire Cain Kemp. Kristen Thomas is to be especially congratulated for being a very worthy winner of the John Wilson Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cricket Umpiring. Andy Collins’ service as an umpire and contributor to SACUSA over many years was gratefully acknowledged at the dinner, both by SACA and our association.

At the end of such an action packed year, there are many people to thank. It must first be acknowledged that the initial planning meeting and the detailed Presentation Dinner preparations were conducted jointly with the Social Sub-Committee. A report of this SubCommittee’s activities appears elsewhere in this Annual Report.

It is difficult to adequately acknowledge the enthusiastic and outstanding efforts of Max Bartlett, Michial Farrow Daryl Harper, Peter Weddell, Bob Woods, and, of course Kristen and Craig Thomas. It has been a privilege to work with these members and supporters of our association and I am deeply indebted to each of them.

Our tireless President always seems to find the time and the energy to be actively involved in all the planning and the activities themselves and his contribution have been very much appreciated.

UMPIRE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS The South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association annually awards trophies to those umpires judged as the best umpire in a particular grade/s. The awards, introduced in season 2001/2002 have been named after former Test Umpires who have served both the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association and the South Australian Cricket Association over many years. In 2009/2010 season the Max O’Connell award was amended to just B Grade and a new award was created for C, D and Women’s Grades.

The John Wilson Memorial Award In addition to the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association annual awards presented to those umpires judged as the best umpire in a particular grade(s), with the generosity of EDS a new award was struck in the memory of Mr John Wilson.

The criteria and nomination process for the John Wilson Memorial Award is as follows: Criteria  Reflect significant contributions to umpiring and/or cricket for the preceding season Process  The Executive Committee to appoint a sub-committee to consider and nominate candidates 

Nominations are to be received from the general membership or from the subcommittee with the winner determined by the full Executive Committee.

GRADE CRICKET UMPIRE OF THE YEAR An award made to the Umpire adjudged by the South Australian Cricket Association Umpire’s Appointment Panel to be the Grade Cricket Umpire of the Year and who has officiated in the South Australian Cricket Association Grade Cricket Competition.

Criteria for the Award:  Must be a financial member of the South Australian Cricket Umpires' and Scorer’s Association.  Must have umpired at least eight (8) of the matches played in the preliminary rounds of the Grade Competition as arranged by the South Australian Cricket Association.  Appointment to be made in conjunction with the Grade Cricket Team of the Year.

ASHLEY HUNTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Under 21 Umpire’s Encouragement Award The Ashley Hunter Memorial Scholarship Award was created in season 2002/2003 by the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association for the further encouragement of umpires under the age of 21 years at the first of September of each season.

Criteria for the Award:   

Must have umpired at least one half of the current season, plus one game.

Based on the SACA Umpires Observers Reports.

The worthiness of the candidate determined by SACA Coaches/Observers from that season.

THE BRADMAN MEDAL During season 1957/58 three SACUA Umpires, John McMenamin, Jack Kierse and Gordon Seymour were enjoying a quiet drink after a SACUA meeting at the Hotel Adelaide in Pirie Street, when the ‘idea’ of an award for the best A Grade District Cricketer was proposed.

The original award, first made at the conclusion of season 1958/59, was based on one vote per game for the best player during an ‘A’ Grade match.

The first presentation dinner was held at the Seven Stars Hotel in Angas Street Adelaide and was attended by approximately 30 umpires. Votes were counted during the dinner and, at the conclusion of the count, joint winners Ian McLachlan and Brian Quigley were announced.

Neither of the winners were in attendance and taxis were sent to their homes to bring them to the dinner to receive their award.

During season 1976/77 it was decided that the District Cricketer Award should be renamed as the Bradman Medal and Sir Donald Bradman was approached for his approval.

“The Don” agreed and said that he would be honoured to have the award named after him.

The presentation of this prestigious award has continued and the Bradman Medal presentation dinner is now recognised as the pinnacle of any cricket season in South Australia.

Season 2007/08 celebrated 50 years since the inception of the District Cricketer Award/Bradman Medal. To celebrate this occasion winners (or family members) of the District Cricketer Award from 1956/57 to 1975/76 were presented with a Bradman Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner on 19th March 2008. Also on the night three players who lost on a count-back were awarded Bradman Medals.

C.W. WALKER WICKET KEEPING TROPHY HONOUR ROLL (A GRADE) Since 1962, as a result of an anonymous donation, an annual trophy has been awarded for wicketkeepers to perpetuate the memory of Charlie Walker. Walker, a former South Australian wicketkeeper toured England with the Australian sides of 1930 and 1938. The award is determined by votes from the umpires in all A Grade minor round matches.
