PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Edward Branson)
SACUSA Members, I have great pleasure in presenting the President’s report of our Association’s business for the 2012-2013 year, the first year of our second century! Many of the challenges facing our Association and identified by President Lynton Donisthorpe last year, remain. We are slowly working towards a greater involvement of scorers into our Association and, after preseason meetings at the beginning of last season, it is hoped that scorer training will be incorporated into the pre-season training seminar for 20132014. A need to assist new scorers with training has been identified and we hope to organise a training session once the season has started and clubs have appointed scorers to lower grades. Involvement of country umpires and umpires from other associations is also a work in progress. With the involvement of increasing numbers in the pre-season seminars, this process is developing. We must acknowledge Neil Poulton’s work in driving much of this. This season has seen us move camp again, as forecast in our last Annual report and we are grateful to the Kensington Cricket Club and Ted for their generosity in making the Kensington clubrooms available. We intend to continue to hold our meetings and training sessions at Kensington in the new season. Again, our membership numbers are up. Meeting attendances have averaged about 90 and the venue and the MacTavish’s delicious salads to accompany the usual BBQs have, undoubtedly contributed to this splendid result. Our very special thanks are due to Desma and Graham MacTavish for their wonderful generosity as well as Craig Thomas, Brian Litchfield and Terry Murch for their ongoing commitment to organising and cooking the BBQs. Despite our increasing member numbers, the challenge of meeting all the needs on the field remain. We look forward to being able to appoint two umpires to every Grade game in every Grade, an achievement not attained last season. With the retirement of a number of senior umpires over the past few years, it has been challenging to make appointments in A and B grades. In the past season eight umpires have experienced their first A Grade game, namely Edward Branson, Milind Gawde, Peter Laidler, Tim Pellew, Grant Potter, Brenton Schnell, Tony Trist and Kevin Tuting. Also five have umpired their first West End Cup game, namely Alan Coulthard, Milind Gawde, Grant Potter, Brenton Schnell and Tony Trist. A number of experienced umpires have returned to A Grade games and, according to many reports, acquitted themselves very well. Neil Poulton also initiated a Development Squad. The members of this squad received intense coaching from Kim Perrin and predominantly umpired in the C Grade. There were many favourable reports about this initiative and a number of this squad move to higher honours in the coming season. The development squad will continue into the new season with some new members. Congratulations to all our members who were involved in any of these challenges in the past season. Congratulations also to our representative umpires this year. Steve Davis continues to impress with the consistency of his high standards serving on the ICC’s Elite panel. Simon Fry and Paul Wilson have again had excellent seasons serving in the domestic competitions. Indeed, Simon was appointed to the final of all three domestic competitions, Sheffield Shield, Ryobi One Day
Page 6
and Big Bash League and Paul was the 3rd umpire for the final of the Big Bash League. As well as our Futures League and Women’s National League representatives Luke Uthenwoldt, Craig Thomas, Lynton Donisthorpe, Kumar Chandrakumar and John Biddiss. I would also like to congratulate Bruce Stribley for being named Grade Cricket Umpire of the Year at the Bradman Medal as well as the Tony Crafter Best A Grade Umpire at our Presentation Night. Congratulations to all our members who were appointed to officiate in finals, especially those who were appointed to Grand Finals. These members are highlighted elsewhere in the Annual Report. Members of your executive were involved in a number of meetings both official meetings organised by SACA and unofficial club organised meetings as the issues arising from the advent of the Premier League were addressed. This League is now a reality and, together with the Clubs our challenge will be to ensure that the best interests of cricket in South Australia are served. During this past season, your Executive has been hard at work in a number of ways that had the benefit of members as its driving force. Of these, our traditional Easter exchange with our Victorian colleagues was, perhaps, the highlight. Comments from more than one of the Victorians that this was the ‘best Easter ever’ make us all proud of the contribution that all involved in Easter made, but especially the hard working committee under the guidance of Lynton Donisthorpe. So I thank you Craig and Kristen Thomas, Pat Watson, Tony and Liz Trist, Paul Welbourn, Chris Hollard and Jill Weeks. Elsewhere in this report the details of the triumphs of the South Australian contingent are outlined. Both in the cricket match for the Crocket Shield and in also retaining the KC Butler Trophy. A special thank you is due to Graham Slater for organising and conducting the KC Butler Trophy event. The laughter and general camaraderie between both contingents on the day bears testimony to its wonderful success. We cannot pass from mention of Easter without comment about the superb contribution that Kristen Thomas made in highlighting the history of this event. Not only was Kristen a warmly received guest speaker at the Friday night dinner, but she also repeated the success of our Centenary Presentation Dinner by having each Dinner attendee matched to a participant from the past from both states. Daryl Harper also made a huge contribution as MC at both Easter Dinners and his jovial but efficient work was widely applauded and very much appreciated. Thank you again, Kristen and Daryl. Whilst the sub-committee tasked with continuing to develop our Association’s history is still getting its act together, Kristen Thomas has continued to find fascinating information and suggested a number of initiatives. Kristen and Max Bartlett recently attended a seminar which will assist them to begin collating oral histories as part of an ongoing endeavour. Expect to see and hear more. We continue to be grateful to our faithful sponsors, Coverdrive Couriers, St John’s Road Wines and Country Club Hotels and Resorts. Jeff King has worked tirelessly to help us develop new sponsors and we are confident that his efforts will be rewarded. Tim Pellew has continued his editorship of Sticky Wicket and this continues to be a significant record of our association and its activities. Tim was certainly a worthy recipient of the John Wilson Award this year. To the winners of all the Awards presented at our Presentation Dinner, congratulations. These awards attest to the high standard that these individuals maintained as there is much competition at every level. It is appropriate to mention again the success of the Presentation Dinner. Each year it is the pinnacle of our season and affords a special opportunity for us to get together and celebrate all the achievements of the season. I urge all our members to make this a night not to
Page 7
be missed. Craig Thomas and his committee are to be congratulated for the organisation of another fine evening, which this year had a definite Easter theme. Kristen Thomas’s place settings were again a highlight. Your executive continues to work closely with SACA with representatives on several SACA committees. This ongoing involvement has been significant in furthering the working relationship between SACUSA and SACA as we work towards the smooth administration and development of cricket in this state. In thinking about this role of your executive it is timely to appreciate that such a close working relationship is not enjoyed by our colleagues in some other states. Tribute must be paid to Shane Bernhardt for his ongoing support and encouragement and for the work of Sarah Fry, Simon Allport and, of course, Neil Poulton. I think that all of us would wish me to pass on our thanks to Neil for his ongoing efforts. Thank you to the committee members who have served our Association this year. Your Vice President, Craig Thomas has not only organised a successful Crocket Shield team but has worked tirelessly on the social side of our activities. The BBQs at our meetings, the Easter Dinners and the Presentation Dinner all are a tribute to his contribution. Michial Farrow, our Secretary continues to provide tremendous support to me and wonderfully efficient and thorough handling of all his duties. He has initiated changes that have greatly assisted the executive in its work. Our Treasurer, Lynton Donisthorpe has continued the outstanding work he has contributed to our Association over many years now. Not only did he oversee the arrangements for Easter but he has kept a tight rein on our finances. It is no coincidence that many thought that this Easter was the best organised ever. Our healthy financial situation has continued to mean that members receive good value for their membership, particularly those who actively engage in Association events. Tony Trist has involved himself actively in the Easter organisation and has proven to be a very capable steward of property. Jeff King has joined the executive this year and has assisted Lynton in ensuring that our books are in good shape and has reactivated our search for new sponsors. I have no doubt that the hard work he has completed will be rewarded with success soon. Geoff Sando has also joined the executive this year and his work in helping to develop our involvement with scorers is appreciated as is his contribution to our discussions. We were sorry to lose the services of Chris Hollard on his retirement from the executive at the end of last year and this year we farewell Max Bartlett. It is difficult to accurately detail the full contribution that Max has made as a past President, representative on Cricket Committee and as a lateral thinker and initiator of ideas that have helped our association move forward. His contribution to Cricket Committee of SACA alone has been instrumental in building SACUSA’s relationship with the clubs, due in no small part to the high esteem that club delegates have of Max. On behalf of us all I wish to express the very deepest appreciation of all the members of our association to Max. Thank you mate! Just like Chris has continued to contribute I am sure that Max will also, particularly through his interest in our association’s history. It remains for me to acknowledge the tremendous support that you the members give to each of us who serve on the executive and, in thanking you for this, I wish to assure you that it is a privilege to serve you. Edward Branson President

SECRETARY'S REPORT (Michial Farrow)
Mr President and Members of SACUSA, I would like to present to you my report on the season just gone at this Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. Our social committee has had a very busy year headed by Craig Thomas. During the season we had our Christmas Meeting, Semaphore Fun Day, Easter and our very successful Presentation Dinner. Attendance by our members is still not where we would like it. However those that do attend these events have a very enjoyable time and hopefully we will get more people to our social events in coming seasons. Well done Craig and his hard working sub-committee on another fine effort this year. The season once again climaxed with the Bradman Medal Dinner Presentation. I would like to congratulate all the medal winners and in particular Sam Miller of the Prospect Cricket Club on winning the Bradman Medal. This year we had our monthly meetings at Parkinson Oval and I am sure that the move to the new location assisted with the great attendance numbers at our monthly meetings. I would also like to thank Ted from the Kensington Cricket Club for his great hospitality during our meetings. I would like to congratulate our members on the high standard of umpiring displayed through the year and in particular all those that umpired finals in the season just gone. The great contribution of our members has not been restricted to Grade Cricket but also at the domestic level where we had Simon Fry, Paul Wilson, Luke Uthenwoldt, Lynton Donisthorpe, John Biddiss, Kumar Chandrakumar and Craig Thomas performing well and on the international scene we had Steve Davis going about business at his normal high standard. The achievements of many of our members must make Neil and the other coaches very proud, well done gentlemen. I would also like to thank all members that either sold or bought tickets in the People’s Choice Community Lottery as it has generated nearly $2,000.00 for the Association. It would be remiss of me not to thank our sponsors who without their support the Association would be struggling to provide the benefits it does to our members. So thank you to Coverdrive Couriers, St Johns Road Wines and Country Club Hotels and Resorts. To my fellow members of the Executive Committee thank you all for your help and support. Finally to all of the members I thank you for your support throughout the past season, and I look forward to your continued support of SACUSA in season 2013/2014 and beyond. Michial Farrow Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT (Lynton Donisthorpe)
To SACUSA Members, It is with great pleasure that I present to you the Treasurer's report of our Association’s business for the 2012–2013 year. Summary This year has seen the largest financial year in the Association's history in respect to turnover with $54,850.28 of receipts and $53,474.88 of payments (excluding term deposit transactions) which has resulted in a net surplus of $1,375.40 for the year. This is due mainly to the direct collection of membership money and increased membership numbers. Membership Membership numbers in 2012/13 were the highest in recent history. We had 131 Full Members (increased from 113 in 2011/12) and 6 Associate Members (increased from 4 in 2011/12). Life Members are not included in these figures. This increase is due mainly to higher SACA umpire numbers and increased participation from scorers and umpires from other Associations. Sponsorship Sponsorship income increased, largely due to the sponsorship we received from St John's Road Wine for sales of the Centenary wine. I would like to acknowledge our faithful and loyal sponsors at Coverdrive Couriers for their financial contribution again this year. Comparison with Budget Figures This outcome was much better than the $3,100 deficit the Executive budgeted for this year. The reason for this was most of our budget deficit items came in under budget; particularly Easter, where our actual $2,900 loss, was significantly under the anticipated $5,400 loss, Presentation Dinner, Bradman Medal and Family Fun Day all under budget by between 20% to 40%. These combined with the increased membership and sponsorship income, provided our above budget result. Trust Accounts The Glad Jones and George McDonough trust moneys have been held in a Westpac Maxi Direct Saver account for some years. Interest on this account was reduced to virtually zero and the Executive consequently decided to transfer these funds into a Westpac Community Solutions Cash Reserve Account (which did pay interest), this transfer occurred on 23/4/2013 and the Maxi Direct account was closed. Activity on this account related to interest income and payment for the Easter trophies for which the money was originally bequeathed to SACUSA. Change In Financial Reporting SACUSA have changed our auditing/report to a cash based reporting system following consultation with our auditors. It is felt that this better represents SACUSA's financial operations as we have minimal assets compared to cash. The cash reporting system is acceptable under the SACUSA constitution and for incorporated bodies with a turnover below $0.5M. In practice, the only difference this has is that our annual financial report shows receipts and payments only, with assets and depreciation of assets not reported in this annual report. Lynton Donisthorpe Treasurer

Glad Jones and Geo McDonough Memorial Trust Funds As a part of the biennial cricket match against the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers Association, trophies are awarded to the best performed South Australian players for overall performance and fielding. These awards are made as a result of trust funds held by the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association from monies donated by former members Gladstone Jones and George McDonough. The first fund, the Glad Jones Memorial Trust Fund, was established in March 1976 with a donation of $150.00 from Mr. Gladstone Jones for a trophy to be awarded to the best performed player representing South Australia. Two years later Mr. George McDonough made a similar donation, establishing the George McDonough Memorial Trust Fund to enable an award to be made to the best performed fielder during these matches. The donations were to remain invested at the discretion of the SACUSA Committee however in the event that a decision were taken to discontinue the matches in the future, the funds and any interest earned was to be donated to the National Heart Foundation. After the establishment of both funds the Executive committee of the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association was empowered to use the interest earned from both funds to award the trophies after each match. An increase to the capital invested of $200.00 was made to each fund during the late 1980’s from interest already earned to ensure that a sound basis for interest earning existed and therefore the continuation of the awards. SOCIAL CONVENOR'S REPORT (Craig Thomas)
Mr President and Members of SACUSA, With centenary celebrations coming to a close at the end of last season we could all be forgiven for thinking that the 2012/13 season would see a reduction of activity in the social arena. We packed a lot in during our centenary celebrations, and some ‘down time’ might have been expected to follow. But as it turned out, there were plenty of social opportunities still to be realised, and members showed that they were more than ready to start our second centenary off with lots of enthusiasm. Owing to the busyness apparent in most members’ lives these days, it proved too challenging to form an official social sub-committee that could be guaranteed of member attendances. Nevertheless, I was still able to secure the support of a number of members and helpers when needed who provided that unerring strength to make sure SACUSA events were superb. The start of the season saw us searching for a new home for our monthly meetings. Our wish list included central location and beautiful surroundings, plentiful parking and a welcoming feel for our custom. With that in mind I approached Ted Jucha from Kensington District Cricket Club and, like a genie in a bottle, he granted all our wishes. I would like to thank Ted for his quirky and consistently generous support of our Association, evident in his monthly hosting of us, and his making sure each meeting is set up to our requirements. There is plenty of space for our much appreciated barbeque chefs, Brian Litchfield and Terry Murch (and a couple of members who put in cameo appearances throughout the year), to create their gourmet ‘snags and patties’, and the bar is always staffed so our members can purchase their beverages of choice quickly and easily. It was difficult to imagine that our generous salad philanthropists, Desma and Graham MacTavish, could improve upon the previous season’s feasts. But improve they did – the range, quality and taste just gets better and better. On behalf of all our members, I extend my sincere thanks to them both for their constant support of the very important catering aspect of the meetings. The success of this change of venue is evident in the improved attendances from previous years. Another major impact on higher numbers of meeting participants was the popularity of the raffles run each month. These were largely made possible by Caron Donisthorpe, who created innovative and beautiful goodie baskets and bags as prizes. Many thanks to Caron for donating the time and effort to ensure the fundraising raffles are such a success. It was also very gratifying to witness the attendance of many umpires’ partners at our Christmas meeting in December. The shared catering – where everyone brought a plate to share – worked extremely well, and it was clear that ‘our better halves’ were happy to be included in celebrations. After all, they certainly make a commitment to cricket umpiring each year, in supporting the long hours of weekend absences by us, and they deserve inclusion in one of the ‘perks’. February saw the organisation of the annual Family Fun Day at Semaphore Waterslide Complex. Considering it was booked for summer, the weather was actually very mild. This, however, didn’t affect numbers wanting to utilise the waterslide, with many visitors of all ages ‘taking the plunge.’ For those not keen to slide, mini golf proved a fun alternative. Many thanks go to Ted Branson for organising the delicious lunch of salads and barbequed chickens on the day. Our ‘prize expert,’ Caron Donisthorpe, is again to be thanked for organising this fun aspect
Page 14
of a very popular day by ensuring that mini-golf superstars went home with suitable awards for their efforts. One social event that was not required during last’s years busy calendar was the Crockett Shield cricket training. However, this season it was imperative. Friday nights during daylight saving seemed to be the most suitable for everyone and University Oval was made available to us for most practices, thanks to Phil Penn. Securing a team to play against for extra training was a challenging task, but eventually a young team was put together by my son, Beau, and we made a night of it at the Ironbank Recreation Ground. Unfortunately, youth proved too strong for us on this occasion. Kristen Thomas supplied salads and cooked a barbeque for everyone’s dinner, and the evening was enjoyed by both SACUSA prospective players and Ironbank Cricket Club stalwarts. Many thanks must be extended to both Brenton Schnell and Graham Slater for their unstinting support of all training sessions, between them taking on the responsibilities of scoring, training manager, water boy and selectors. A Sunday trial match against a team organised by Deepak Chetry held at University on a very hot day was well attended by players and helped along by Tony Trist and son, Adam, as much needed substitute players. The irrepressible Jeff King agreed to administer umpire duties after initially turning up as a spectator. A luncheon of Subway platters kept body and soul together for everyone involved. One of the highlights of SACUSA’s social calendar each year is our Presentation Dinner, held for the last few seasons at the West Lakes Golf Club. We were inundated with support for this function from both members who are often supportive and members who were interested in becoming involved. In 2013 the members of this sub-committee were Tony and Elizabeth Trist, Ted Branson, Brenton Schnell, Lynton Donisthorpe, Paul Welbourn, Kristen Thomas and myself. All deserve thanks and appreciation. We decided to alter the menu from last year in order to vary the choice for members, and promoted a theme of Crockett Shield history on the night. Kristen prepared unique name plates for each guest for the evening as well as a short PowerPoint presentation outlining the Crockett Shield story. A new MC, Fox Sports journalist, Tom Wilson, was engaged for the evening and captured the spirit of our umpiring ways fairly quickly. David and Judy Little, Martin and Ros Bradshaw, SACA, Stirling Hotel, Meridien Hotel and Apartments, JB Hi-Fi, Café Uno and Un Caffe are all extended our genuine thanks for so generously donating prizes for our silent auctions and raffle. To the ten brave souls who braved the cold in June to travel to Mt Lofty for a round of golf I congratulate and thank you. Many thanks, too, to David and Judy Little for once again hosting the delicious lunch at their Stirling abode (and offering Judy’s delicious home-made soup into the bargain). Much gratitude should be extended to Graham Slater for coordinating this event and the accompanying prizes for participants. I can only recommend this annual event to any members pondering the offer as it is a fun off-season activity for members and partners. I would like to thank all members for their support of the social activities during my first year as convenor. I have big shoes to fill and I appreciate any help that is forthcoming. Here’s hoping the 2013/14 season is a social success.

SA UMPIRING MANAGER (Neil Poulton)
Umpiring in South Australia has changed a great deal over the past few years. Numbers of accredited umpires in South Australia has increased over 1000% since 2008. To put this in perspective in 2008 there were around 100 accredited umpires in South Australia. Our numbers now top 1200. Grade Cricket this year had 130 active umpires (a record number), Adelaide Turf had around 70, Para Districts had 15 and even Adelaide & Suburban, although less formal had 50 umpires with around another 60 accredited through the great work done by Bob Harris and Bob Fradd in making use of their presenter accreditations and presenting their own courses. Community Club Cricket has also had its share with around 600 club coaches and volunteers obtaining their Level 1 umpire accreditation. Country cricket have not been slow either with nearly 200 umpires across the length and breadth of the state. (Many with their Level 2) Umpires this year have worked hard. Not only providing great coverage to their respective associations but also undertaking the massive task of supplying umpires to 15 carnivals last season. It is well recognised by the cricket community the service umpires provide to these carnivals and the extent to which they make the carnivals a success. Last season for Grade Cricket, SACA introduced a new Development Squad aimed at Talent Identifying potential umpires for higher grades in the future and providing them with additional training and feedback. Thanks goes to Kim Perrin for all his great work in taking what was a group of relatively inexperienced umpires and moulding them into a very strong team of umpires. The Development Squad will continue in the coming season with about 50% new members who replace those who have worked their way up. This past season the SACA umpiring department was joined by Cheryl Barnett who as Umpire Administration Officer kept us all organised (especially me!). On behalf of all umpires I offer my sincere thanks to Cheryl who unfortunately has moved on to, incredibly, Basketball (where I came from). Our loss is their gain. At an elite level, Steve Davis continues in his unstoppable way on the ICC Elite Panel, Simon Fry continues to advance in the eyes of the ICC not only umpiring on field in last season’s international series but recently travelling to Canada and India further increasing his profile. Paul Wilson continues to move up the ranks of Cricket Australia’s National Umpire Panel and I would expect to see him follow Simon towards ICC rankings in the future. Our State Panel in Lynton Donisthorpe, Craig Thomas, Luke Uthenwoldt, John Biddiss and Kumar Chandrakumar continued to perform well umpiring the WNCL and Futures League competitions with Cain Kemp and David Duffy representing South Australia at the Under 17 and Imparja Cup national championships respectively. In Grade Cricket, Bruce Stribley had the honour of being named in the All Star Team and capped it off with the SACUSA “A Grade” Umpire award. For Adelaide Turf, Graham Wood was awarded best 1st year umpire, Darren Bullimore the most improved and Steve Sykes and Richard Hood took out the honours of being named as the standing umpires for Turf’s A1 Grand Final.
Page 16
Para Districts also recognised their umpires with Les Harrison receiving the Bullen Medal, Frank Brown as the most improved umpire and Bradley Ryall recognised in the Level 2-3 award. Well done to all award winners. Also congratulations and thanks to all umpires I worked with over the season for their dedication. A special thanks to SACUSA and the Executive Committee this year led by Ted Branson. Taking over from Lynton Donisthorpe was always going to be a big job and Ted and the rest of the committee should be proud of how seamless the transition was. 2013-14 season will continue to grow and improve on all of our various programs and initiatives. I remain enthusiastic and committed to umpiring throughout South Australia and thank everyone for the great support I continually receive.

EASTER REPORT (Craig Thomas) Mr President and Members of SACUSA, The Easter of 2013 once again heralded the turn of South Australia to host the Crockett Memorial Shield cricket match against our Victorian colleagues. An Easter sub-committee was formed, comprising Lynton Donisthorpe, Ted Branson, Brenton Schnell, Max Bartlett, Chris Hollard, Pat Watson, Jill Weeks and myself. To all of the members of this sub-committee I would like to offer my most appreciative thanks for all the work you contributed toward such a magnificent tradition. It was decided to host our visitors in the heart of North Adelaide at the Meridien Hotel and Apartments, a venue belonging to one of SACUSA’s generous sponsors, Country Club Hotels and Resorts. Hot on the tail of our historic centennial year, we approached the long weekend activities with the intention of seeing what we could discover about the beginnings of this longstanding interstate game. It was decided to approach Kristen Thomas – who discovered last season’s centenary - to act as guest speaker at our Friday night Welcome Dinner in the hope that she would be able to uncover a few dusty facts about how the contest began. She succeeded in her research and published a small brochure to give to all Easter participants to help enlighten them about where this tradition came from. A copy of the brochure can be accessed via the SACUSA website. Our very own Daryl Harper, kindly agreed to MC our official functions over the weekend, and he managed to keep everyone highly entertained. There was a real sense of unity between the two associations throughout the evening, and the decision to seat all the tables as composite guests from both states served to make sure that new friendships were made and rivalries remained fun. Kristen had prepared personalised name plates for all guests detailing life overviews of participants from the very early games. The feedback received from our Victorian colleagues was that this simple gesture had made them feel expected and welcome. The tone for the rest of the weekend was set. The picturesque venue of Scotch College was once again hired for the business end of proceedings – the match – but this year we were able to secure their premier oval, the one surrounded by the traditional white picket fence. Clubhouse facilities had been improved since our last visit in 2009, and everything worked perfectly during our stupendous day. A new decked area overlooking the match served the spectators well, and inside the rooms a scrumptious lunch of super fresh sandwiches and rolls was served by caterers kindly booked by Pat Watson. Dessert was included and, all in all, both sides enjoyed the hospitality. Neil Poulton very generously spent the afternoon exercising his multimedia talents by putting together a magnificent video of the game and Tony Trist kept everyone informed of game status by volunteering to man the scoreboard. Both gentlemen deserve sincere thanks for their time. But, by far, the best part of the day was the result – a 53 run win by SACUSA. Our unbeatable team comprised Neal Cotgrove, Michael Davis, Adrian Drosd, Jimmy Edwards, Josh Harmer, Cain Kemp (Vice-captain), David Little, Vivek Mohan, Matt Schulz, Klarke Trezise, Paul Welbourn, John Williams, Michael Williamson and myself. The social, but focused, training sessions that led up to this moment proved to have been a very worthwhile exercise.
Page 18
It was a quick run back to North Adelaide after the game as the Presentation Dinner was looming and the match had finished later than hoped. Daryl again donned his MC hat and kept proceedings ticking along at a relaxed pace. He graciously mentioned our 53 run winning margin as often as he could during the night, which was appreciated by at least half of the audience. Dining and dancing kept the mood light, and medal presentations were made to our scorers, Trevor Finlayson, and South Australian scorer, Neil Ricketts, as well as umpires, Victorian, John Collins and South Australian, Andy Collins. I proudly took possession of the Crockett Shield, after its absence from SA for the last two years and the obligatory celebratory team photo was taken by many who were there. A copy can be seen on our Facebook page. Easter Sunday revealed the ‘secret’ chosen activity for the KC Butler Trophy contest. Another interstate clash, it sees all guests – not just cricket umpires – compete for glory. As time moves on both Associations are finding the choice of a new activity challenging, and this year was no exception. Only a short time out from the deadline, our trusty President, Ted Branson, wisely consulted Graham Slater for some direction and he took on the project with gusto. His teaching qualifications served him well to design a Family Fun Day, run along the lines of a traditional school sports day. Initially, Mother Nature proved difficult to get along with, sending down at least three torrential bouts of rain at the wonderful Bulkana Oval, which managed to ensure at least three false starts. But cricket umpires possess nothing if not patience, and they outwaited the weather to hang on for a fantastic day. Participants ranged in age from one year old to probably those in their seventies, and the execution of relay tasks was hilarious. Graham is to be heartily thanked for designing such a successful competition under severe time constraints. The afternoon included a hearty winter’s lunch where everyone relaxed and there was much discussion of collaborating on some Crockett Shield history research together. Additionally it included the revelation that SA had also won the K C Butler Trophy. Current interstate friendships were continued and new ones begun. The aim of the weekend was cemented. Monday came around all too quickly and the Farewell Breakfast beckoned. Both those who stayed as guests at the Meridien and those who stayed in their own Adelaide homes attended a function which summarised a weekend which was nothing short of excellent. Gerry Schembri and Lynton Donisthorpe spoke about what they viewed as a fantastic tradition between the two Associations and about the goodwill which it engendered. Both gentlemen deserve a huge amount of thanks for the months of focussed attention that they dedicated to organising the event. The Farewell Breakfast was followed by a short, but concise, inter-association meeting before guests left for their return home. Very little criticism of the weekend’s activities was evident, with the overwhelming opinion to be that the relationship between the two bodies was stronger than ever. It was indicated that VCAUSA would begin organisation of the next contest as soon as possible, while the feeling from the weekend was at an all-time high. An inter-association meeting in Penola, planned for 2014, will continue discussions regarding the next Crockett Shield, and it is anticipated that this relationship will keep growing beyond the 82 years that it has already experienced. It is only nine more matches until we can celebrate the centenary of the Easter Crockett Shield competition. The current statistics rest at Victoria, 19 wins to South Australia, 18 wins. I appeal to all members to become involved in this excellent goodwill tradition between two complimentary organisations. It brings a new meaning to Easter celebrations and is an opportunity to make new friends. My sincere best wishes go to the incumbent Easter team and supporters of 2015. Craig Thomas 2013 SACUSA Crockett Shield Captain

THE BRADMAN MEDAL During season 1957/58 three SACUA Umpires, John McMenamin, Jack Kierse and Gordon Seymour were enjoying a quiet drink after a SACUA meeting at the Hotel Adelaide in Pirie Street, when the ‘idea’ of an award for the best A Grade District Cricketer was proposed. The original award, first made at the conclusion of season 1958/59, was based on one vote per game for the best player during an ‘A’ Grade match. The first presentation dinner was held at the Seven Stars Hotel in Angas Street Adelaide and was attended by approximately 30 umpires. Votes were counted during the dinner and, at the conclusion of the count, joint winners Ian McLachlan and Brian Quigley were announced. Neither of the winners were in attendance and taxis were sent to their homes to bring them to the dinner to receive their award. During season 1976/77 it was decided that the District Cricketer Award should be renamed as the Bradman Medal and Sir Donald Bradman was approached for his approval. “The Don” agreed and said that he would be honoured to have the award named after him. The presentation of this prestigious award has continued and the Bradman Medal presentation dinner is now recognised as the pinnacle of any cricket season in South Australia. Season 2007/08 celebrated 50 years since the inception of the District Cricketer Award/Bradman Medal. To celebrate this occasion winners (or family members) of the District Cricketer Award from 1956/57 to 1975/76 were presented with a Bradman Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner on 19th March 2008. Also on the night three players who lost on a count-back were awarded Bradman Medals.
