Blues In The Schools—by Liz Walker Art Museum for a field trip presentation for around 300 students. Lew Fratis, Kyle Rowland, Ruby

BITS was honored and enthusiastic to be invited by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission to participate in their inaugural Art Jam held Oct 3rd. The attending movers and shakers of the area had an opportunity to try their hand at various inter-active art experiences, such as mask making, throw a pot on a pottery wheel, draw a live model figure, donut art, and also to join in with some of BITS’ favorite Crea ve masks musicians at “Billy’s Juke Joint” for a jam. An empty warehouse was transformed into a very cool industrial chic space for a great night full of music, art, food and

Vincent Pantages is a member of the youth band that will be traveling to Memphis at the end of January to participate in the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase. He was very excited to meet Mary Carrera of Carrera Productions, the

2015 has been a good year for the Blues –Cari Chenkin As I sit down to write my final column as 2015 President, I find it hard to believe that the year’s almost over, but it’s really true! It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to have served as your 2015 President, and I want to thank all of you SBS members for electing me to the Board of Directors, and thanks (I think!) to the Board members for electing me President.

 

Speaking of the Board, I want to offer kudos to all our Board members for their hard work and participation. We’ve had a great group of individuals who’ve worked well together to run the Sacramento Blues Society this year. I also want to thank all our Committee members and volunteers who also have shared in the process.

 

Here is a list of some of the highlights, projects and accomplishments of 2015:  We upgraded and improved our website, adding more features, including a new SBS “merchandise” page;  We took our Blue Notes newsletter electronic;  We had our biggest and best Blues in the Schools Program and Showcase yet;  We put on two well-attended and fun “extra” events – in February, Arbess Williams in celebration of Black History Month, and in June, Chris Duarte Band;  We brought back our IBC Competition and are sending a band to represent us in Memphis;  For the first time ever, we are also sending a Youth Band to the IBC Youth Showcase in Memphis;  We successfully partnered with several communi-

ty groups (SMAC, the Crocker Museum & more) to enlarge the arts “footprint” of our area and get out the word about the SBS; We intensified our Social Media presence with a new, upgraded official Facebook page; We inducted five more people into the SBS Blues Hall of Fame, with a wonderful ceremony and after-party; We’re in the process of upgrading our financial software and practices for greater efficiency, communication and economy; We’re working on revamping and strengthening our sponsor and membership programs to offer added value for members and sponsors.

There’s no doubt the 2015 Board had, and continues to have, ambitions that will help to keep our Society vital and growing. I want to encourage all members to consider volunteering for either a Board of Directors or a Committee position, to assist in this effort. We need YOU, in order to be the best we can be! All you have to do is contact our Secretary, Janna Welk, with a short blurb about why you want to be on the Board and what you’d offer. But act quickly, nominations close November 14th. Meanwhile, I hope to see ALL of you at our upcoming Annual Membership Meeting and Party on December 5 – it’s going to be a great occasion! With gratitude, Cari

MUSIC EDUCATOR’S CORNER—By Ruby Gypsy and Scott Willson, Inducted into the SBS Hall of Fame in 2014 bassist Joe Lev is our featured music educator (and our cover subject). Joe teaches private lessons in bass guitar at Guitar Workshop 3248 J Street, Sacramento 95816.

(major, minor, diminished, and augmented). As a student progresses we explore the special relationship of the circle of 5th/circle of 4th, ultimately in all 12 key signatures as well as modes. I like to emphasize the importance of developing reading and writing skills, especially working from lead sheets or chord charts. In my band Johnny Favorite Presents we cover over 450 songs, which I would never be able to perform without the use of lead sheets and chords charts.

What is your approach to teaching private music lessons? I like to offer what I refer to as Bass Boot Camp; which is an up front and intensive look at the special skills and strengths needed to succeed as a bass player with a band.

Dynamics is an area of special consideration, because without dynamics what are we actually doing? I like to ask students, “How quiet is quiet”?

First, we take a look at the student’s instrument and identify any needed repairs or upgrades. Typically a new set of strings and basic overhaul can be a great start. Next, we identify a one-octave major scale, first on the piano, then on a single string, then on 3 strings on the bass. Once a student begins to get the feel and flow of working in a major key we begin to take a look at chord construction and function, and the 4 triads

Favorite sayings? “Being in-tune and in time is a good place to start, but the first 1,000 tunes are the hardest.”

3

Final thoughts for students? Being great on your instrument is the first 5 percent, but being a great person and great at the music business is the rest.

2015 Hall of Fame Inductees Honored—by Sally Katen; photos by BG Phillips September 27th, 2015 at Harlow’s Restaurant, 2:00 pm and the doors open for the 7th Annual Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame Awards. What a day we had, honoring new inductees Bruce Pressley, Donna Proctor Smith, Liz Peel VanHouten, Michael Andrews and Robert Sidwell. All our new inductees were presented by Hall of Fame members. As usual, the honorees had the beautifully arranged upper seating level at Harlow's for them and their families and friends.

shown on a screen. A big Thank You goes out to Bob Cosman for all the hard work he has done on this project for the last couple of years!! To keep the show rolling, the Ray “Catfish” Copeland Band played a set with band-mates Steve Randall, Jeff Minnieweather, RW Grigsby and Marilyn Woods. This is a group of very talented and long-time musicians who had some of the crowd up dancing. They were joined on stage by Charlie Baty in the latter part of the set, then the first half of the raffle prizes were announced. There were some very nice raffle prizes this year.

Once the doors opened the place filled up fast! Kyle Rowland and Andrew Little opened the show with an acoustic set which everyone seemed to enjoy. Then our current SBS President Cari Chenkin gave a great speech about our Sacramento Blues Society and the Blues in the School updates! Great speech Cari!

The induction ceremony began with the lovely Lena Mosley introducing new Inductee Bruce Pressley. She did an awesome job, as always! Thank you Lena and congratulations Bruce!

Then it was my time to explain how the Hall of Fame Committee determines the inductees each year. The main thing is to have submittals of names who you think are deserving. Do not assume that we have that certain person’s name! It is so easy; just go to sacblues.com, click on Hall of Fame, send the form and I got it! Once we have collected names, we include previous folks who were nominated, have several meetings discussing the who, the what, and most important, the why this person should be one of Sacramento's Hall of Fame Members, vote, and finally reach a decision. It is a very thorough process.

The very talented Donna Proctor Smith was next, inducted by Sacramento’s own Mick Martin. Wow, Donna your history is amazing!! Thank you Mick and congratulations Donna! Next up and continuing on, Charlie Baty inducted one of the founding members of

Little Charlie and the Night Cats, Liz Peel

VanHouten. This is another lady with a lot of great history and both women are bass players! Congratulations Liz and thank you Charlie!

Next up, one of our very special segments, the Gone But Not Forgotten. Kyle Rowland played background music while a video of the blues musicians, promoters and supporters that we have lost was

Mick Martin again bestowed the honors, this time for Inductee Michael Andrews. We learned that many Sacramento original blues musicians would not be here if it was not for Michael, as he was one of the blues forefathers in Sacramento. Con nued next page 4

Blues Lyrics: A Look Inside - By Dana Moret I picked this song as my first subject because it has remained relevant to me, from 19 years old, when I thought that I was invincible in the world and was quickly finding out how hard it could be to make it in the world on your own. As a result, it was a song that for at least a year or two was always bouncing around my head and the first song I sang to a live audience. Here’s what I was hearing: My Interpretation: Some people are rich; some people are lucky (get over it). Society makes you think that you really can’t do anything without money. This has been said for eons, but people still act surprised. Mom and Dad did their best, but accepted that myth nonetheless. But YOU have a chance to make it for yourself.

GOD BLESS THE CHILD

Billie Holiday & Arthur Herzog Jr. (c. 1939) Them that's got shall have, Them that's not shall lose. So the Bible said and it still is news. Mama may have, Papa may have, But God bless the child that's got his own. That's got his own. Yes, the strong gets more, while the weak ones fade. Empty pockets don't ever make the grade. Mama may have, Papa may have, but God bless the child that's got his own. That's got his own. Money, you've got lots of friends, Crowding round the door, When you're gone, spending ends, They don't come no more, Rich relations give, crust of bread and such. You can help yourself, but don’t take too much. Mama may have, Papa may have, But God bless the child that's got his own. That's got his own. er I hear it.

Poor people just can’t seem to get a break, because nobody respects the poor.

but don’t get used to charity. A more conformed generation may have succumbed to that mindset, but more power to the ones who make their own path, because you’ll get further ahead in life with ambition. You hold your destiny in your own hands. It seems to me like the lyrics speak for themselves, but in the end, the words to any song (story) are a personal interpretation. That’s the magic of music lyrics. Maybe that’s why certain songs speak a little truer to one than another. So in conclusion, this song speaks to me as a song of inspiration, not self-pity. That could be why I smile a little, inside and out, whenev-

It is my plan to interpret well known blues songs, as well as songs written by my fellow Sacramento Blues Society songwriters. If you have a song that you think would be cool for me to break down, feel free to send me your lyrics and an mp3 and I’ll share how it speaks to me.

Everyone wants to be friends with the rich. Always coming to their parties, eating their food, drinking their wine, but when they run out of money, and all the beer’s gone, no one wants to help you clean up after the party.

Live, Love, Music.

Relatives with money may throw you a bone every once and a while, sending you a gift here or there, or picking up the check. It’s Ok to take them up on it,

Upcoming Elections for the 2016 Board of Directors We are still taking nominations for the 2016 SBS Board of Directors. Board members must be current SBS members wishing to help with our mission to preserve and promote American Blues Music. We do this through an assortment of ways: the Gene Chambers Musicians Crisis Fund which assists member musicians in emergencies, the Hall Of Fame which recognizes individuals that strengthened our blues community, the annual contest to send a representative to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Competition, a Blues In The Schools program that presents programs in schools and after-school programs, and by co-sponsoring and supporting various shows and venues in the community. The Board of Directors works together to manage these activities and is responsible for the growth and protection of funding sources and assuring SBS is in compliance with rules and regulations of operating a legal 501(c) (3) non-profit entity in the state of California.

Board are up for election. This system assures that at least one-half of the Board members have experience and can assist new Board members in fulfilling their corporate duties. Are you interested in keeping the blues alive in the Sacramento area? Or do you know someone that would be interested in assisting with this mission? If you are interested in serving, or if you know someone who would be an asset to SBS, please send a brief candidate statement no later than November 14, 2015 to Janna Welk at coolriver916@att.net. Ballots will be prepared and mailed to SBS members on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, and must be received by SBS on or before Saturday, December 5, 2015. Ballots can be returned by either US mail or hand delivered at the annual SBS Membership Party on that date. Ballots will be counted and the 2016 Board of Directors will be announced at the end of the Membership Party.

There are six Board positions to be filled, five of those will be 2-year terms, and the other will be a one year term. Each year, one-half of the members of the 9
