S H A D O W S & PAT T E R N S COLLECTION
Our first furniture collection is inspired by the beauty, elegance and timelessness of Islamic geometric patterns. What unites the pieces is the evolution of patterns and materials from select objects of the resplendent Islamic empires. For centuries these unique Islamic artifacts blended advanced geometry with artistic inspiration. The perfection of these shapes was thought to reflect the divine order of the cosmos, and so they had merit as auspicious objects in their own right.
We are also inspired by mashrabiyas, the intricately carved lattice screens that first appeared in 12th century Baghdad when it was the wonder of the ancient world. Their mesmerizing play of light and shadows at times surpass their practical purpose of screening and ventilation. ‘Shadows and Patterns’ is a 21st century representation of ancient Islamic art forms, combining traditional elements with modernday materials and aesthetics to create collectable masterpieces.

The coffee table is inspired by the tortoiseshell & mother of pearl inlaid calligrapher’s pen box from Ottoman Turkey, dating back to the 17th century. The internal compartments inspired the table’s tray concept and the bird-topped box. The table is made of walnut wood, antique brass and adorned with a mother of pearl inlayed box, topped with a playful brass parrot. This is a motif that was popular during 17th -18th century Moghul India.

This table and its intricate brass inlay and gold leaf interior is inspired by this brass candle holder dating to 11th century Iraq. The pattern on the candle holder is suggested by the stucco decorations from ancient Samarra, Iraq. The interior of this table also comes in a turquoise high gloss lacquer interior option, reminiscent of the lusterware of Persia.

These two lamps are inspired by a Mamluk mosque lamp and are made of antique brushed brass. The lower borders of the lamps acquire their transparency through a pierced geometric pattern. When lit, the light shining through the lamp projects beautiful patterns.
