Introducing
Every element of the Stickley Park Slope bedroom is a testament to the quality of American craftsmanship. Alongside the meticulously constructed bed, the collection’s case pieces are every bit as sculptural, though in a quieter way; on these uninterrupted surfaces, the wood’s stunning grain becomes the focus. Park Slope is available in black cherry and quartersawn white oak, each creating a distinctive and desirable look beneath one of Stickley’s unique hand-rubbed finishes.

EDITOR’S NOTE WE PARENTS OFTEN USE CHILDREN AS AN EXCUSE for why we can’t have nice things. But as I spoke with designers and homeowners for this issue of Sacramento Home, whose theme is family living, one idea kept resurfacing: Kids or no kids, anybody can have a beautiful home. Take, for instance, Michael and Michelle Casagrande, who have two active boys and two dogs. As you’ll see in the story about them starting on page 40, they didn’t sacrifice anything in the way of style when creating a home for their family. Michelle recalls meeting a chic Frenchwoman who told her: “If you teach your kids to respect your home, they’ll grow up that way.” Interior designer Katrina Stumbos shares that philosophy. She teaches her own two children that “everything has a place.” And she thinks kids deserve to grow up surrounded by beauty. “There’s a lot of chaos in the world,” says Stumbos, who shares her daughter Gisele’s stunning pink-and-gold nursery with us in this issue. “Home should be a sanctuary for them—a place that’s not chaotic, with lots of soft textures so they feel comfortable. I don’t think it’s enough to just give your child a bed.” I hope this issue inspires and delights you.

I had so many choices for a realtor to list my home. I interviewed several and listened to their ideas about pricing, staging, repairs and the like. A trusted colleague recommended Carrie. There was something about her integrity, her ease and her careful listening that rang true to me. What I didn’t know was exactly how hard she would work and how instinctive she was about what needed to be done to make my house show its best. She didn’t rush to market. Instead, she took her time getting everything just right. She staged it beautifully, recommended little fixes, and got things done. And the finishing touch? She brought over beautiful Koi for my fish pond which had been empty for years. In the end we had 7 offers over full price and the house sold in 48 hours. Who do you want on your team? —Linda T.

BITTE, A German word that means “please” and “you’re welcome,” is also the name of a local retailer of children’s goods founded by mother-daughter duo Sara McDonald and Maia McDonald Smith. “I thought it was a nice meaning to attach to what is often being given as a gift for a child,” says Maia, who studied German as a child. A graphic designer by training, Maia had long dreamed of opening a business with her mother, who cut her retailer teeth years ago as the founder of the successful toy company Magic Cabin. “I wanted to do something similar to the business she had started, selling things made with natural materials that were sustainable and beautifully
designed,” says Maia. “When I went to look for these items as a new mom, I found it was hard to find them all in one place.” Bitte, which has an established online presence and will soon open a brick-and-mortar shop in Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhood, sells everything from organic cotton baby swaddles and onesies to handmade cloth dolls and sturdy wooden toys. “Our products have a modern look but also a classic bent,” says Maia, “because they’re made out of what toys used to be made out of. We’re trying to curate items that have modern shapes and a contemporary color palette. I am definitely inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese design. But overall, our focus is on quality items that you would want to pass down someday.” BITTESHOP.COM —catherine warmerdam

FLOWERS FARM TABLE
FROM
TO
LOCALLY SOURCED food has traditionally been the main focus at Sacramento’s annual farm-to-fork dinner on Tower Bridge. But now, locally grown flowers are getting in on the act. Organizers of the 2019 dinner asked Loomis flower farmer Lisa Thibodeau of Happy Road Farm to supply the florals for the event. In the past, local flowers have gotten short shrift at the dinner, which features local produce, meats, fish, wine and other products. For the long dining tables on the bridge, Thibodeau supplied olive tree branches cut from two felled olive trees at Twin Peak Orchards in Newcastle. Using flowers from her farm and other local flower farms, she designed arrangements for the entry tables, dessert tables and bars. Volunteers from Sacramento Valley Flower Collective, a group of farmers and florists that promotes local flowers, helped assemble the arrangements. For the two entry tables (one on either end of the bridge), Thibodeau cut an old fruit crate in half to make two boxes, which she filled with lush roses, dahlias and other florals. At the base of each crate, she placed tiny apples, persimmons and quince for a look of verdant abundance. For some of the smaller arrangements, Thibodeau used an unlikely floral: sheaves of rice harvested by Rue & Forsman, an Olivehurst rice producer. “Rice is a grain, so it’s hardy, and it dries nicely. It’s great to use in arrangements,” she says. Her goal in participating in the bridge dinner was simple, she says: to get diners to “think about your flowers the way you think about your food.”

“We sourced all the flowers locally, mostly from my farm, the rest from friends in the Sacramento Valley Flower Collective.” Lisa Thibodeau

a hotel home
that’s just like
WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER Karla Avila was tapped to design the lobby and guest rooms for Hotel Winters, the first boutique hotel to open in the quaint town of Winters, the owners had one request: Make it homey. “They wanted it to fit with the town: comfortable, cozy and inviting,” says Avila, who owns Avila Winters Design & Co. in downtown Woodland. “They wanted it to feel like guests were walking into a home, not necessarily a hotel.” To achieve that welcoming ambience, Avila utilized oversized wooden desks and tufted wingback chairs for the reception area instead of the typical standing-height countertops found in most hotels. “It’s the first touchpoint for the hotel, and we wanted to make sure that moment felt really inviting,” she explains. “I like the fact that it doesn’t feel corporate at all. It’s the kind of desk you’d see in a really nice home office.” The rest of the lobby is broken up into distinct seating areas where guests can
linger as though relaxing in the chic living room of a friend. The ample space is pulled together by a large fireplace, stylishly curated bookcases, statement light fixtures and loads of local art, including a stunning series of oil landscapes by Davis-based painter Anne Lincoln. “The art was important because we wanted to make sure it didn’t feel like a generic space,” says Avila. “Our idea was to give local artists a place to showcase their amazing work.” As for the 78 guest rooms, each one is a little different. “They are very large rooms, so we needed to make them feel warm and inviting,” says Avila, who outfitted them with lounge chairs and stylish throw pillows. “You still feel as though you are in a home in the guest rooms.” Guests who want to bring the Hotel Winters look home with them are in luck. Avila, who is opening a second design shop adjacent to the hotel, says that every piece of furniture and décor in the hotel is available for purchase through her firm. —catherine warmerdam

BRICKED OUT “I love the idea of doing something fun but functional,” says David Tracy, the creative mind behind KitCo, a line of build-your-own tabletop lamps made from LEGO-compatible plastic bricks. But these whimsical lamps aren’t exactly child’s play. At 10½ inches tall, each lamp is made with more than 2,200 bricks and takes several hours to assemble, even for experienced builders. “I think they’re a great gift for kids, but I really designed them with adults in mind,” says Tracy. “They “Not everyone has the are great for people who like board games, puzzles, budget or space in their Sodoku and, of course, people who grew up with or home for a sculpture, still enjoy LEGOs. The kits are designed to be as much fun to build as they are to display and show off.” but everyone has Tracy, a Sacramento native who is about to graduspace for a lamp.” ate from business school at the University of ChicaDavid Tracy go, has been experimenting with the bricks as an art form for years. His work has been exhibited at LEGO’s factory in Hungary and at Google SF. Why a lamp? “Not everyone has the budget or space in their home for a sculpture, but everyone has space for a lamp,” he explains. Plus, building with bricks is just plain fun. “They are bright and colorful and loaded with nostalgia.” The KitCo lamps are sold online at kitcosets.com and locally at the Crocker Art Museum gift shop and Archival Gallery (3223 Folsom Blvd.) —catherine warmerdam

lejandra and Luis Magaña had no intention of founding a ceramics studio together. In fact, Alejandra confesses she had little affinity for working with clay as an art student in college. “I just wasn’t very good at it,” she says. But when she landed a job as a high school art teacher in 2015, she was forced to bone up on her wheel-throwing skills. So the couple, both of whom studied art at Sacramento State, bought a potter’s wheel and starting practicing together. Using their tax return money to purchase a kiln, they eventually fired more pots than they could reasonably store in their newlywed apartment. Why not try to sell them and make a little side money, just for fun? When customers at an art fair in Elk Grove responded enthusiastically to their work, the idea for a business was born.

Today, Echeri Ceramics occupies a light-filled production studio in a warehouse complex off of Florin Perkins Road. Luis handles all of the throwing production, spending many hours a week hunched over a potter’s wheel shaping soft clay into mugs, bowls and vases. Alejandra, meanwhile, manages the glazing side of things. She’s also responsible for meticulously hand-painting the studio’s signature pieces, which are embellished with lines, faces and botanical shapes. Echeri’s designs and colorways are influenced largely by memories of Mexico (Luis was born in a rural area in the state of Michoacan; Alejandra, a first-generation American, visited Mexico with her parents to learn about her heritage) and the distinctive patterns of the country’s textile artists. As Luis explains, “The patterns in Mexican textiles communicate where the makers are from. Every town has a certain kind of pattern. We wanted to figure out how to translate those designs into our ceramics, but in a more abstract way.” Like the artisans who serve as their inspiration, the couple takes pride in showing off how the human hand is evident in all of their work. “I may produce 1,000 cups within a certain structure, but the work is all very personal, and each piece is unique,” says Luis. But that doesn’t mean Echeri’s utilitarian objects are too precious for everyday use. “We don’t want our stuff to be in a china cabinet where it only comes out on special occasions,” says Alejandra. “We want our pottery to see the good, the bad and the ugly of your daily routine, like when you’re eating pasta over the sink.”

ho says a family home can’t be elegant? Even though they have two active young boys, Michelle and Michael Casagrande didn’t want to settle when remodeling their East Sacramento home. That’s where designer Curtis Popp came in. Known for injecting his clients’ houses with his trademark “minimal traditionalism,” Popp teamed up with the Casagrandes to create a home with oodles of style. The two-year project included the addition of a den on the ground floor and a master bedroom suite upstairs. In the process, every surface of the original 1929 house was touched. One of the best decisions the couple made was to add wainscoting throughout the house to create a bit of architectural interest. “The house didn’t have a lot of detail,” explains Michelle. The wainscoting, painted the same shade of white as the walls, creates a serene, neutral canvas for the couple’s art and furnishings. For the living room, Michelle’s instructions to Popp were clear: “I wanted it to look like a modern French apartment,” she recalls. While the Casagrandes have a distinct monochromatic style, Popp persuaded them to go with a color palette of subtle pinks, blues, yellows and grays, with pops of black from an oversized modern light fixture and accessories. In the kitchen, a large island serves as a gathering spot for friends and family. There, Michelle can prepare dinner while the kids do homework or guests keep her company. “It’s a great spot to hang out, talk and have drinks,” says Mike. The family eats dinner every night at a large round table nearby. “This is a pretty kid-friendly house,” says Michelle. Honed Carrera marble counters and backsplashes are easy to clean. The fridge, pantry and microwave are stashed behind cabinet doors for a design that’s easy on the eyes. To keep the look as minimal as possible, the couple even swapped out the signature red knobs on the Wolf range for silver ones. Popp designed a sleek butler’s pantry as a transitional space between the kitchen and the new den. It’s one of his favorite design tricks, using a small space to break up two larger ones. In the den, the boys can watch sports on TV while their parents entertain in the living room. A diminutive “Mad Men”style bar is tucked into a corner, with drinks for both adults and the kids. Upstairs, Popp reconfigured the floor plan to create a new bedroom suite for the couple, located down a short hallway from the boys’ bedrooms. “It’s been the biggest change for our lives to have a little breathing room from the kids,” Michelle says. Marble slab walls in the shower and marble herringbone tile on the floor give the room a luxurious vibe. Because space in the bathroom was at a premium, Popp put the vanity in the bedroom. “It’s superfunctional,” says Michelle. “And it reminds me of my grandma, who had a little dresser in the bedroom where she put on her makeup.” The remodeled house serves everyone well: kids and adults, friends and extended family. “Everyone likes to come here,” says Mike.

A white dresser, glider and rug are quiet counterpoints to the oversized pink floral wallpaper.
As every mother knows, flexibility is key to successful parenting. It’s also key to creating a chic bedroom that can adapt as baby grows up. Just ask interior designer Katrina Stumbos, who kept flexibility top of mind when she designed a stunning pinkand-gold nursery for her daughter, Gisele, born in November 2018. “Children’s needs and styles change much more rapidly than
48
adults’ do,” she explains. “So I made all my choices as adjustable as possible.” Stumbos started with peeland-stick, removable wallpaper in an eye-catching pattern of large pink and white peonies. “It’s a loud print,” she admits. “While I love it, Gisele may end up hating it, so it can be changed easily.” To furnish the space, she selected versatile pieces, like an uphol-
stered glider chair and ottoman in soft white velvet and a dresser that does double duty as a changing table. To up the glam factor, Stumbos replaced the bureau’s hardware with unique pink-geode knobs from Anthropologie. “They weren’t cheap, but they really upgraded the piece,” she says. Custom draperies in soft pink linen can be used in the future in another room if necessary, and a

big mirrored cabinet that now provides storage for books and diapers will work well into Gisele’s teens. A soft shag rug provides a cozy spot for Gisele to play with her older brother, Santana. The room’s pièce de résistance: a gold crib that Stumbos searched high and low to source. “I was obsessed with having a gold crib,” she says. As for Gisele? “She loves her room,” her mom says. “It’s so sweet.”

fter spending all day in the kitchen, a professional chef could be forgiven for not wanting to cook when he or she gets home. But Michael Fagnoni and Molly Hawks don’t have that luxury: In addition to owning two acclaimed restaurants (Hawks in Granite Bay and Hawks Public House), they have three young children. And that means three hungry mouths to feed, day in and day out, 365 days a year. So when they built a new custom home in Granite Bay two years ago, Mike and Molly insisted on a large, well-thought-out kitchen that would make cooking family meals a breeze. Working with interior designer Aimee Griffin, they ended up with a workhorse of a space, with plenty of room for everyone and distinct zones for cooking, baking, cleanup and more. Taking center stage is a massive island topped with honed Carrara marble. Here, Mike preps for dinner, often with help from younger daughter Lauren. “She loves food,” says Mike. “She’s the cook in the family.” Molly, meanwhile, is the family pastry chef, using the marble island top to roll out all kinds of dough. She doesn’t mind if the surface takes a beating from use. “It adds character,” she says.

To accommodate two chefs, the kitchen has multiple redundancies: two sinks (one for prep, the other for cleaning up), two dishwashers and an eight-burner range with two ovens. Two more ovens, plus an extra fridge, are stashed in the nearby mudroom. A coffee station with an espresso machine and a drip coffee maker enables Mike and Molly to grab cafe-quality coffee while getting the kids off to school in the morning. In the evening, Mike cooks dinner while Molly helps the kids with their homework. Dinner generally consists of a grilled or roasted protein—often steak or chicken—along with a big salad and sautéed vegetables. “We try to eat healthy,” says Mike. “But foremost, it has to be really tasty.” A vegetable garden in the backyard and an herb garden out front supply fresh produce—tomatoes, jalapeños, strawberries, basil, parsley and more—for family meals. “The kids loved picking the plants out at the nursery and getting them in the dirt,” Molly explains. “It’s great for them to experience things right off the vine.”

The kitchen provides ample space for entertaining—important because Molly has a large family, with six siblings who live nearby. “When we get together,” she notes, “it’s easily 20-plus people. We wanted to create a space where we could have everybody over.” In fact, building the house was a family affair: Molly’s dad, who owns a construction company, oversaw the project, and her brothers (also in the construction trades) built the cabinetry and box-beam ceilings and did the finish carpentry. Now, the family has plenty of room to gather for everyday meals and special occasions. “It’s nice to have all this space,” says Molly. “It keeps us all together.”
