Commitment
to Healing
“M
aybe tomorrow.” “I don’t have time.” “I promise I’ll start next week.” When faced with the choice—and task—of being healthy and stress-free, many of us prefer the quick fix, or the status quo: our “exciting”, fast-paced lives; our triedand-tested routine of getting up in the morning, jumpstarting our bodies with coffee, easing our stress with cigarettes and alcohol, and easing our bodily aches with aspirin. Here’s the truth: those quick fixes don’t work. While they temporary alleviate discomfort, the reality is that our bodies are slowly breaking down. Little by little, our organs are failing us. Toxins are accumulating in our systems, causing illness and disease. Our immunity is taking a beating, because of both physical abuse and mental/emotional stress. Our cells are aging faster than we expect. It’s not a pretty picture. This is what Sacred Eden is here for: we’d like you, dear reader, to consider that a lifetime of health and healing can be yours. All it takes is commitment. It’s never too late to reclaim your health and live the way you are supposed to be living. That is, having your mind, body, and soul fully present and functioning in harmony. Every cell in tune with one another, your systems working without a glitch, and your body nourished inside and out by food, thoughts, emotions, and relationships that are good for you. When we commit to this vision and promise, great health is ours. You can enjoy life—and easily add more years to this life! We at Sacred Eden are here to help you make this commitment. As a support to our website, this monthly magazine can serve as a guide for you to begin your path to healing—and sticking to it. We’ll have varied topics for each issue, and I’m sure each article will resonate with each one of you.
We also explain what happens if we let a simple yeast infection develop into a full-blown fungal infection, as in the case of Candida (page 13). Not to be ignored, this condition can hit our immune systems and leave us debilitated if left unchecked. Readers interested about remaining youthful can turn to page 7 for energy-boosting exercises and to page 8 for a listing of six super agedefying foods; while those interested in losing weight can turn to pages 5 and 10, respectively, to know how to speed up their metabolism and whip up great-tasting but low-fat meals using a crockpot. We do hope you enjoy reading this issue of Sacred Eden as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. Be well.
In this issue, however, things lean toward the subject of detoxification. A widely-discussed subject in health and wellness circles, detox is where it starts: what you put in your body has an immediate effect on it. It can be as (relatively) harmless like mild skin disorders, or extremely health-compromising, such as colon cancer (page 10). We give you three easy steps to get started (page 3), and recipes for juice fasts (page 19) to help cleanse your systems. Benjamin Ravaru Editor

HealthySolutions Hangover Helpers: Surviving the Morning After
I
t's the morning after, and if that glass on your nightstand is half empty, you may be even worse off than you thought.
While there are enough hangover remedies to make your head spin, most only address a small portion of the problem: dehydration. Hangovers are actually caused by a complex chain of chemical reactions that occur in the body after drinking alcohol, which results in not only the loss of fluids but also sodium and potassium. The effects of a hangover include nausea, weakness, dizziness and sleeplessness.
Stop Migraine With Detoxification, Now!
M
igraines are a common type of headache. They most commonly occur in women and usually begin between the ages of 10 and 46. In some cases, they appear genetic. Migraine comprises 20 per cent of all headaches. This type of headache occurs when blood vessels of the head and neck constrict, resulting in a decrease in blood flow. Migraine is usually experienced as a throbbing pain on one side of the head, with an associated feeling of sickness and sensitivity to light and sound. Below are some of the factors that have been identified with migraines. Throbbing, pulsating feeling usually worse on one side of the head. Pain may be dull or severe and often begins in the morning, gradually worsening in an hour or so. Pain may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, vertigo-like feeling and visual disturbances. Sensitivity to loud noises and light. Commonly lasts from a few hours to one or two days in some cases. You may have observed that in the last several years, your regular medication’s dose has been increasing. The essence of the problem is not just controlling, but correction of this deep-seated condition. One way to get the body back in balance is through detoxification.
Cleansing the Body: 3 Detoxification Steps The First Step: Preparation Consider: no one would usually skydive or bungee jump without mentally and/or physically preparing for it. Yoga and meditation several days before your detoxification program will help you carry out your detox easier. The Second Step: Detoxification This second step is the actual process of detoxification and cleansing your body. Many detox diets use oils like flax seed, olive oil, and primrose, as well as raw soups and fresh greens that are also juiced and pureed. Some of the suggested meals that one is able to eat during this time include: blended and juiced vegetables (celery, cucumbers, kale, parsley, wheat grass, barley, and spinach). These are all ingredients that one should be digesting during the body detox and consumed for a period of at least 24 hours. The Third Step: Finishing Up Many people call the third step the "exit" of the detoxification cleanses, when the person eases himself away from the raw and pureed juices, soups, and essential oils. This step is supposed to be completed in a series of ideally three days in order to be the most beneficial to the cleanse. (Detox diet recipes is found on page 17 of this magazine)

If you have had one too many, here are a few of the most popular hangover remedies and how they can help: * Water: It's the first step toward combating dehydration. * Coffee: Coffee won't sober you up, but the caffeine will wake you up and help that headache. But it can also increase dehydration and make your stomach feel worse, so if you choose coffee as your cure, drink plenty of water. * Eggs: The protein in eggs helps provide energy. They also contain cysteine, a nutrient that is thought to help rid the body of toxins. * Energy drinks: Energy drinks can replenish lost nutrients and rehydrate your body. But one product, Hair of the Dog, goes beyond the typical energy drink because it also contains detoxifiers that target the liver. Hair of the Dog contains natural stimulants to get your metabolism going, 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, as well as B vitamins. * Gingerroot: Gingerroot tea can settle your upset stomach. * Hot soup: Soup soothes the stomach and helps with rehydration. * Bananas: Bananas are rich in magnesium and potassium, which are depleted during heavy drinking. * Honey: Honey will increase your blood sugar levels. * Tomato juice: Since tomato juice contains salt, it helps the body retain fluids. In fact, any fruit or vegetable juice will rehydrate your body and replenish it with vitamins and other nutrients.
HealthySolutions 8 Ways to Boost Your Energy 1) Stay on a regular sleep schedule. You can’t stay up late during the week-end and suddenly, on Monday morning, wake up refreshed. If you do enjoy later nights on Friday and Saturday, get to bed early on Sunday to wake up rested. 2) Avoid the sugar and caffeine roller coaster. Eat some protein and foods with a bit of fat in the morning. The brain needs protein and the body does not store it. You don’t have to eat very much-a glass of low fat milk, a piece of cheese, or a handful of nuts will get you going instead of pure carbohydrates like a plain bagel. 3) Take a five to 10 minute power nap around lunch. Even if you just close your eyes and let your mind drift, you will be refreshed for the afternoon. This is also effective anytime you feel yourself not concentrating, reading the same material over and over. Give into the urge and completely relax for a few moments. 4) Drink more water and liquids. Most Americans are in a constant state of dehydration from filling up on coffee, tea, and sodas with caffeine. This is very stressful to the kidneys and can cause irritation to the bladder. Keep a sports bottle filled with plain, or your favorite flavored, water and keep it with you at all times. Set a goal: empty it by lunch, refill, empty again by the time work is over. Carry plenty of water in the car too for you and your family. 5) Exercise regularly. This is easier said than done with a busy schedule. A poor conditioning level causes you to be short-of-breath and your heart to race when just doing simple things like climbing a flight of steps or doing household chores. Park farther away when shopping and walk. Dust off that exercise machine or get an exercise tape to play when weather is bad. Set an example for the rest of your family and maybe they will join in too! 6) A joke a day keeps the doctor away. Seriously, laughter has many beneficial effects on the body. The brain chemicals for experiencing pleasure, happiness, and peace increase with good, hearty laughs. Live alone? Get a funny movie or watch a light-hearted comedy on TV. 7) Avoid confrontations and situations with negative people. You know who they are. They are not going to change but they will bring you and your mood down. The complainers, gossipers, and generally unhappy souls we all have to deal with on a day-to-day basis drain our energy if we allow them. Be polite but avoid arguing or getting hooked into listening to their constant problems. 8) Take regular, daily supplements of the highest quality. Our food and diets simply do not meet the amounts needed for maximum health. There is a difference between avoiding nutritional deficiencies and optimum performance.
Dehydration: A Common Problem Dehydration is more common than you may think. It occurs when the body loses too much fluid without having it replenished, like after a night of drinking, or when you exercise lose too much fluid through perspiration. Often, dehydration happens gradually, and you’ll hardly notice it until you feel extremely thirsty. Dehydration often leaves people feeling tired, lethargic, sickly, or even faint. Caffeinated beverages or drinks with high sugar content aren’t very good at hydrating you, and diuretics like coffee can even leave you more dehydrated. Dehydration is also a big issue if your body is losing a lot of unabsorbed water through diarrhea or vomiting—the proverbial case of “can’t hold anything down.” In most cases this can be remedied by pushing fluids through an IV, and electrolyte mixtures often speed the process of recovery. Keeping dehydration at bay is as simple as drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Carry around a water bottle or keep a glass of water filled on your counter or desk at home and in the office. If you see it, you’re more likely to drink it!

Diet smartly
What do people mean when they say ‘Fasting Health’? It’s knowing what foods are right for you. It’s about being healthy, not just looking good
T
here’s no such thing as a quick fix when talking about losing health. When you see those ads on TV that tout “Fasting Miracles,” what they’re usually talking about is called Detox Fasting. In this case you do not actually lose weight, but your body eliminates all the elements that are not useful and act as a slow and effective poison. You will have to drink a lot of liquids and stop eating some of the things you are used to. You will also have to do your own discerning research and ask questions to know Fasting Health. Fasting Health means not trying to lose too much weight overnight. Fasting Health means that you will take good care of your nutrition and understand very well why you are eating certain food. A doctor will tell you that Fasting Health means keeping the proper hours of the meal, eating well, but eating right. It is important to eat well in the morning and lunch to be able to have a light dinner, instead of starving the entire day and ending up eating more than necessary at night. The busy life of the 21st century can really make you forget how things should really be. You will also be told that Fasting Health means complementing the lack of certain food with vitamins to keep a balanced diet even if you eliminate certain foods from your diet. Fasting Health means that you get rid of what is bad, not of everything or the foods that are absolutely necessary for you. Fasting Health means also not relying only on nutrition in order to lose weight. It’s all about regaining the natural program of life that busy people forget about. Fasting Health involves a good physical exercise and healthy diet. It is after all, everyone’s wish to lose weight and look good at the same time. Respecting only the diet, your muscles will look just as poorly as they did before and your skin doesn’t recover either. Because the body is in such a close relation with the mind, Fasting Health also means trying to sleep well and being less stressed as possible. Fasting Health is a complex notion that involves some effort and understanding on your behalf as well. Dieting is a lot about the brain, perhaps more about it than the body. So it should start with a positive attitude and with determination. Fasting Health can be attained by a patient person who is ready to lose weight and grow healthy slowly, but intelligently. The priority is to stay healthy, and then look good.

10 Steps on Improving Your Metabolism By Karen Sessions Are you sluggish and low on energy? Do you feel like you work and work toward your weight loss goal and never seem to make any dramatic improvement? You could be suffering from a slow metabolism. Even though you may have a slow metabolism, it does not have to destroy your weight loss efforts. You can dramatically improve your metabolism, and boost your energy levels without taking supplements. Your metabolism simply refers to the conversion of food to usable energy by the body. It is the biological process, by which energy is extracted from food, and the net result is how fast or slowly the body burns those calories. A few steps you can take to improve your metabolism naturally are: 1. Drink Water. Water is great to drink and you should be drinking a minimum of 8 to 10, glasses daily, of course, more is better. It will help increase your metabolism and flush out sodium, toxins, and fat. Drinking water before meals will fill your stomach so you feel full and prevent overeating. Avoid excess colas, coffee, teas, and sugary juices. Caffeine will dehydrate you, and the sugar will do more damage than good in the long-run. 2. Eat Every Three Hours. Eat a small balanced meal every three hours, including snacks. Meals and snacks should be balanced, meaning they should contain a complete protein, carbohydrates, as well as natural fat. Failure to eat consistently can lead to a slower metabolism and fat storage. Also, skipping meals slows down your metabolism. To ignite fat loss, you need to be consuming the right foods in a balanced manner throughout the day. 3. Don't Skip Breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets your metabolism running in high gear. You wouldn't drive your car to work on an empty tank, and you shouldn't start your day without adequate nourishment. Your first meal sets your metabolism for the day and keeps it going, as long as you eat every three hours. If you get up early and eat a late breakfast, you miss out on several hours of burning calories.
Body 4. Don't Fear Fat. Fat has developed a bad reputation. Many people think fat makes you fat. This is false. The type of fat and how much fat you eat impacts your body fat composition. Fat is needed by the body. Those who follow a very low-fat diet have a harder time ridding their body of fat. Choose natural healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, various nuts, flax, and natural peanut butter to receive your necessary fats. 5. Omit Trans Fat. Trans fat is the bad fat, the cause of weight gain, low energy, depression, cancer, and heart disease. You will never get the body you desire by eating "healthy" fast food, frozen dinners, and other processed choices. If it's man-made, it's not the best choice, and will halt fat loss endeavors. Eat the foods Mother Nature has provided to meet your fat loss goals. 6. Be Active Daily. Stay active at least six days a week. Take the stairs when possible or park further out to get that little bit of extra movement to keep the heart and lungs working optimally. The more movement you get daily, the better you will feel overall. 7. Do Cardiovascular Exercise. Cardio exercise is necessary for heart and lung health. It also burns calories. Doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can tap into fat stores, and keep your body burning calories at a high rate for about an hour after cardio is finished. If you fail to eat adequately daily, first morning cardio on an empty stomach can work against you. Doing morning cardio on very low calorie diet can burn muscle. Another good time to incorporate cardio is in the evening after your last meal. This allows you to burn calories so you are not sleeping on them. You do not have to implement a morning and evening session, choose one or the other or cycle between the two to prevent staleness and boredom. 8.HIIT It. Blend some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) into your cardiovascular program from time to time to give your body and metabolism a good shock. The body is programmed for adaptation. Therefore, doing the same cardio format day in and day out can become stale really fast. Take one or two days a week and implement some HIIT to give the body an added shock. HIIT is basically alternating low intensity and moderate to high intensity cardio training. For example, a 20 minute HIIT session would look similar to this: Minute 1 and 2. Low Intensity (Walking) Minute 3 and 4 ñ High Intensity (Light jogging or running) Minute 5 and 6 ñ Low Intensity Minute 7 and 8 ñ High Intensity and so onÖ 9. Weight Train. Resistance training builds muscle, which is metabolically active tissue. The more muscle you acquire, the faster your metabolism will be. Adding more lean muscle tissue to your body will put curves in the right places and allow you to eat more calories a day. 10. Listen to Your Body. Killing yourself with workouts is just as dangerous as not working out at all. Listen to your body and get proper rest. Don't train if you are ill, still sore from the previous workout, or just simply too tired. Training in such a state can cause more problems than it solves. If any of the above fails to prove results in 4 to 6 weeks, there could be an underlying problem, such as a food allergy, sluggish thyroid, hormonal imbalance, toxins, parasites, etc.
Cure your Baldness and Alopecia the Natural Way
A
recent media broadcast on UK televison as part of an experiment to cure alopecia and treat thinning hair and baldness uncovered the beneficial factors of using Chinese herbs. There are a number of Chinese herbs that can be beneficial for this condition. Chinese medicine treats the root imbalances in the body that result in alopecia. When the body is brought into balance, symptoms resolve themselves and slowly disappear. The first is a pattern of Liver and Kidney Deficiency. This means that the energy of the body that normally nourishes the hair follicles is deficient. When herbs are used to nourish the Liver and Kidney, hair can start to grow back. The second pattern is toxic heat in the body. This means that there is an inflammatory condition in the body that is a result of excess acidity from a poor diet, exposure to pollution or other toxins, or an infection. In most people with alopecia areata, these two conditions exist in combination with each other. It is necessary to reduce inflammation and acidity in the body while nourishing the cooling yin energy of the body that nourishes hair growth. He Shou Wu, or polygonum, more popularly known Fo-ti, is one herb that can be beneficial for people with alopecia areata. This herb has been used traditionally in China for graying hair and premature hair loss. It is a general tonic for the brain and the body, and can improve the quality of hair growth on the head. It can take three to six months of use to see the full benefits of Fo-ti. The Chinese have also traditionally used this herb as a longevity tonic. Ligustrum and eclipta are also two Chinese herbs used to nourish hair growth by strengthening the Liver and Kidney Yin energy of the body. Research done in China has shown that these herbs can promote hair growth in people with alopecia areata. Chinese wolfberries are also a general body tonic that improves blood circulation to hair follicles of the head. This herb can work well in combination with the herbs listed above. In order to clear the inflammation and acidity that can trigger alopecia, mint, dandelion, and honeysuckle herbs can be used in combination. Some supplements that may be of benefit in combination with Chinese herbs include vitamin C, flaxseed oil, and nettle tea. All of these are anti-inflammatory and detoxifying to the body. Eating black beans and black sesame seeds can also be helpful when taken alongside Chinese herbs.

Body Want more energy and power?
Exercise!
The more you exercise, the more energy you give your body
T
hese days, making it to the gym is near impossible. Life is very busy which creates a serious challenge for being consistent with exercise each week. However, exercise is exactly what we need in order to reduce stress, increase longevity, and give the body extra energy for daily living. The best results are achieved using refined techniques, functional exercises, cardio, proper nutrition, awareness, variety, consistency, supplementation and motivation over time! Refined technique means correct form to isolate muscles or “target areas of the body.” Efficiency is the priority to ensure maximal muscle stimulation. With resistance training, also known as weight lifting, it is important to eliminate momentum. It is also necessary to move the weight through a full range of motion. This will cause muscle contraction for the correct amount of time and ensure appropriate length of the tendons. The goal is to strengthen the joints of the body by stimulating the muscles around it. For example, the lower back is an extremely important part of the body. Many people have trouble with this area, especially if their occupation puts a strain on it. So, it is a good idea to strengthen the muscles of the lower back like the erector spinae by performing three to four sets of back extensions on the floor superman position or face down on the exercise ball for 8 to 12 reps. As the muscles around the spine get stronger, the spine is held in place better, which reduces the changes of lower back problems. It is also important to keep the joint partially bent at the end of the rep, so that constant pressure remains on the muscles and no added pressure is applied to the joint from locking it out. Cadence is a term that refers to the rate at which the resistance or weight moves. The best results are achieved by a slow cadence that causes the muscle to contract longer. On occasion, a mixture of fast and slow cadence may be used, especially with sports-specific training. Lastly, using correct angles achieve muscle isolation in target areas and decrease the chance for injuries, especially with heavier weights. So, how many sets and reps should be completed? Four sets
7 sacrededen
of 8 to12 reps using a weight that is difficult but manageable. Allow 24 hours to recover with his approach. Six sets of 4 reps is more advanced, calculated at 60 to 80 percent of the one rep max. Allow 48 hours to recover when using this approach. Functional exercise is a new popular technique that stimulates the core or torso of the body while working another muscle group at the same time. For example, performing a dumbbell press while lying on an exercise ball. The abs and the core muscles contract to hold the body into position, while the chest and tricep muscle push the dumbbells up. This type of challenge causes maximal stimulation to the body and keeps the workout interesting. Cardio is great for the heart and lungs. The number of calories burned is important as well as maintaining the correct heart rate. The heart rate formula is 220 minus age times point 60 for the lower margin and 220 minus age times point 80 for the upper margin. This is also known as the fat burning zone. Cardio also detoxifies the body and strengthens the immune system among many other health benefits. Muscles contract and move lymph along, which allows the immune system to clear dead cells and bring in new ones. Warm up is important for preparing the body for the more demanding portion of the cardio workout. Allow 15 to 30 minutes prior to weight lifting and 10 to 15 minutes prior to cardio activities like jogging, swimming, aerobics or walking. In addition, a good stretch routine before warm up is highly recommended. The preferred schedule for the weekly workout is warm up followed by cardio, then weight lifting on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with cardio only on Tuesday and Thursday. While you may feel your schedule is too busy to maintain a scheduled workout routine, you will find that by adding exercise to your life you will actually add time, as you will have more energy and become more efficient in your day to day activities. Think of exercise as the battery that gives your life power.
There’s hope to eliminating cellulite! The term cellulite originated in European spas and salons and they explain it as deposits of tiny fat globules on the buttocks and thighs. Cellulite is the result of a buildup of common fatty tissue. The skin is connected by strands of fibrous tissues to deeper tissue layers, which separates the fat cell compartments. The increase in the size of fat cells is accompanied by a waffled appearance of the skin that results in the bulging of the fat cell compartments, or “orange peel” appearance. The most common areas are around the buttocks, hips, and thighs. Genetics and hormones may also play a factor in developing cellulite. Cellulite is not necessarily a factor of body weight. You do not have to be heavy to have cellulite. Nevertheless, it is possible to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Speedy metabolism and detoxification in the body help in gradual elimination of cellulite. A healthy metabolism is capable of eradicating cellulite forever. The proper functioning of the liver is also necessary for detoxification. Bio-ceramic additive reflects your body's own infrared rays, which help to break down cellulite cells and revitalize tissue. Increased heat and molecular stimulation enhances the effectiveness of exercise, increases blood flow, and accelerates metabolism to burn more calories. Women who are concerned about cellulite can take certain steps to reduce the appearance or eliminate it altogether. Eating a well balanced diet that is low in fat will help to reduce and eliminate further progression. Exercise is also an important factor; if the body is toned, it results in good circulation, thus another step in reducing cellulite. In addition, drinking plenty of water has many health benefits and will aid in fighting cellulite.
Food and Nourishment Beauty
3) Avocados Avocados smooth and soften the skin and its oil is easily absorbed; compared with almond, corn, olive, and soybean oils, avocado oil has the highest skin penetration rate.
Superfoods For Age-Defying Beauty! Aloe vera and coconut oil are among the top six nutrient-rich foods best for skin By Sylvia Riley
Avocado also contains vitamin E (excellent for the skin), antioxidant carotenoids and the master antioxidant, glutathione, that is exceptionally powerful and has anti-carcinogenic potential. High levels of glutathione are found in the liver where the elimination of toxic materials takes place. Glutathione is effective against pollutants such as cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes as well as ultra-violet radiation. Research is currently exploring the potential benefits of glutathione for numerous conditions including cancer, heart disease, memory loss, arthritis, Parkinson's disease, eczema, liver disorders, heavy metal poisoning and AIDS.
4) Chlorella 1) Goji Berries Goji berries are one of the most nutritionally dense foods on earth and house a staggering concentration of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytochemicals and essential fatty acids. With such an awesome constitution, it is not surprising they are reputed anti-aging marvels. Originating in Tibet and greatly favored in traditional medicine, these dried berries have many noted health benefits including boosting immunity, lowering cholesterol, enhancing vision, fighting cancer cells, relieving depression and aiding weight loss. Goji berries contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges by weight and more beta-carotene than carrots, making them a superb source of vitamin A. Together with vitamin E and essential fatty acids, these berries are ideal for any anti-aging and beauty regime. They also contain polysaccharides, one of which has been found to stimulate the secretion of the rejuvenating human growth hormone by the pituitary gland, as well as B vitamins, 21 minerals and 18 amino acids. A study cited in Dr. Mindell’s book Goji: The Himalayan Health Secret, observed that 67 per cent of elderly people that were given a daily dose of the berries for three weeks experienced dramatic immune system enhancement and a significant improvement in spirit and optimism.
2) Aloe Vera Foget botox--Aloe Vera increases collagen production 100 percent naturally for a youthful, wrinkle-free complexion and plump, beautiful skin. The ultimate botox alternative! The inner gel of the aloe vera leaf contains around 200 active compounds with over 75 nutrients. These include 20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins (even vitamin B12-one of the very few plant sources of this vitamin). Aloe vera also has anti-microbial properties that fight fungi and bacteria, and houses anti-inflammatory plant steroids and enzymes. Aloe vera is known to aid digestion and elimination, boost the immune system, and be highly effective at healing, moisturizing and rejuvianting the skin, naturally stimulating the production of collagen. Aloe vera is best eaten fresh when possible (large aloe vera leaves last a few weeks when refrigerated). Scrape out the inside gel, avoiding the outside of the leaf, which is a strong laxative, and blend with fruit for the ultimate beautifying smoothie. Aloe vera has a mild flavor though a slight bitter edge, hence is best combined with fruit.
The nucleic acids RNA and DNA in Chlorella (one of the highest known sources of such) direct cellular growth and repair and enable our bodies to utilize nutrients more effectively, eliminate toxins and avoid disease. The production of nucleic acids in the body declines progressively as we age, which is why their intake is recommended by Dr. Benjamin Frank in The No-Aging Diet. Paul Pitchford in Healing With Whole Foods writes that “insufficient nucleic acid causes premature aging as well as weakened immunity.” Research at the Medical College of Kanazawa in Japan found that mice that were fed chlorella had a 30 per cent increase in life span. Replenishing RNA and DNA can be key to overall health, immunity and longevity. In addition to nucleic acids, chlorella is jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and amino acids, making it an incredibly rejuvinating and health-promoting superfood. Spirulina is a virtuous equivalent.
5) Bee pollen When it comes to young and beautiful skin, bee pollen has outstanding gifts. Swedish dermatologist Dr. Lars-Erik Essen uses bee pollen to successfully treat acne and other skin conditions and observes it’s beautifying and anti-aging effects. He reports that bee pollen “seems to prevent premature aging of the cells and stimulates growth of new skin tissue. It offers effective protection against dehydration and injects new life into dry cells. It smoothes away wrinkles and stimulates a life-giving blood supply to all skin cells.” He believes it’s skin rejuvenation properties are due to its high concentration of nucleic acids RNA and DNA, as well as its natural antibiotic action. Bee pollen has a host of other health-promoting benefits that include fighting infections, lowering cholesterol, strengthening the blood, Boosting the immune system, increasing physical strength and stamina, aiding longevity and enhancing libido! It has been called a “prefect food” because it is so nutritionally complete.
6) Coconut oil Coconut oil speeds up your metabolism and can actually help you loose weight. It is also incredibly beautifying and moisturizing for the skin and has antioxidant properties which protect against free-radical damage, keeping the skin youthful and healthy. Taken internally or externally coconut oil is a great ally for any beauty skin care regime. It also contains lauric acid, an antimicrobial fatty acid that kills bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Food and Nourishment Healthy Cooking
P
eople used to question the nutritional effects of barbecuing because they were concerned about the fat content of traditional barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers. That concern is valid, but it's easily avoided by substituting skinless chicken and fish. Unfortunately, researchers say there is still another concern about the health impact of barbecuing any animal meats: when they are cooked in the intense heat of the barbecue, substances are formed that have been clearly shown to be carcinogens (substances that can start the development of cancer). And these substances develop regardless of whether low-fat or high-fat, red meat or white meat is on the grill. In a landmark report on diet and cancer risk, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) notes that as meat - red or white - is cooked, natural substances that it contains react under intense heat to form compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that have been linked with increased cancer risk in some animal studies. The longer the cooking time and higher the temperature, the more these carcinogenic substances formed. Studies in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute have shown that people who frequently eat heavily browned or very well done meat are three to five times more likely to develop breast, colon and stomach cancer than those who eat it less often. Studies of rodents demonstrated that these HCAs are distributed to mammary (breast) tissue and cause changes in a cell's genetic material. However, we don't have proof that this process occurs in people.
any meal, animal protein like meat, poultry and seafood should occupy no more than a third of your plate. And that's especially true when it's grilled. Does this mean that if you care about your health you must banish the grill? Not necessarily. Researchers note that how people barbecue affects the risks. For example, marinating meat or poultry even briefly before cooking reduces the amount of HCAs formed by about 96 percent. Partially pre-cooking meat for two minutes in the microwave just before grilling prevents 90 percent of the HCAs normally formed. Avoid the black char that often forms during grilling, since it is particularly concentrated in cancer-causing substances. Other carcinogens of concern come from the smoke. You can limit the meat's contact with smoke and decrease this risk if you raise the grill a little higher from the heat and choose leaner meats and trim all visible fat so it can't drip and cause smoking. Placing food in a foil packet also prevents smoking.
Barbecuing— Boon or Bust? Is cooking out on the grill really healthier, or are there hidden health risks?

The rest of your meal can reduce the risks of grilling as well. Antioxidant vitamins and phytochemicals in fruits, vegetables and soy foods seem to block some of the damage HCAs do to cells. Studies from Oregon State University demonstrate that substances in tea increase the body's ability to detoxify and excrete HCA before they do their damage. Look at the overall balance of your meal. AICR recommends that at any meal, animal protein like meat, poultry and seafood should occupy no more than a third of your plate. And that's especially true when it's grilled. By limiting your meat portion, you limit your exposure to HCAs and other carcinogens. And by enjoying a healthy portion of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you get loads of cancer-fighting, health-promoting nutrients and phytochemicals. If you want to grill some of these veggies, that's no problem, since the HCA reaction occurs only in foods with animal protein.

Colon
Cleansing:
A Way to More Energy and Vitality
A healthy colon keeps valuable nutrients in the body, while flushing out waste. Keep it in tip top shape
I
n its perfect state, a colon effectively eliminates wastes from our system and conserves water in the body. The colon is a long tube in your body that helps with the end of the digestive process and eliminates the residue of digestion from the intestinal tract. It’s a home to helpful bacteria that absorbs valuable nutrients into the body, making sure each cell, gland, and organ are properly nourished. Obviously, the way we live today makes it almost impossible to have fully healthy colons. If the colon is not working properly, toxic waste and matter builds up in the body, causing fatigue and illness. Other symptoms of a clogged colon can include sluggishness and constipation, as the inner diameter of the colon becomes constricted with built-up waste. Skin irritation, moodiness, gas and diarrhea can also be symptoms of a clogged colon. Unhealthy diets, stress, and other factors lead to the accumulation of toxic elements in the colon that are gradually transported to other parts of the body—the nervous system, heart, and glands. This inability to eliminate toxins clogged in our bodies and having them spread throughout our whole bodily systems leads to auto-intoxication or self-poisoning. These eventually trigger a variety of symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, low energy and vitality, skin problems, foul body odor, halitosis or bad breath, and colds that can lead to more serious diseases--polyps, cancer, Crohn’s disease, and ulcers, to name a few.
Colon hydrotherapy What to do then? Get to the root of the problem: cleansing your colon and shifting your body’s elimination process back into the right place. The major colon cleansing and detoxification methods include Colon Hydrotherapy, Enemas, Herbal supplements, Laxatives and Oxygen-based Cleansers. Colon hydrotherapy cleanses the entire length of the colon by flushing the organ with filtered water. A sterile tube is inserted into the rectum and filtered water is used to irrigate the colon. As the water is cleaning the colon, an evacuation tube carries the waste away.

Years of debris, toxic matter and mucus can be removed quickly and without lingering side effects. This treatment is far more effective than an enema because it cleans the entire colon. Enemas clear the bottom half of the colon but don’t reach the uppermost portion effectively. In order to achieve maximum benefit of a clean colon, the entire organ must be flushed. Herbal supplements are often used in colon cleansing as well. A plant product called psyllium is most usually the base of these treatments. The psyllium’s fiber expands when it comes in contact with water, and the bulky material causes the bowel to contract and expel waste. There are also oxygen-based cleaners that turn the waste into liquid or gas and help it to be expelled. Another way is to do juice fasting. Juice fasting gives the entire digestive system a much needed rest and for optimal functioning to take place once again after the break.
Colon-Cleansing Diets Eating the right food can help in removing your colon of debris. A plant-based diet not only has several advantages for the colon, it’s the best bet for minimizing the risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Fiber-rich foods Most everyday diets are low in fiber and digestive enzymes—two things essential in keeping our colons clean and absorbing nutrients. This causes the body to produce digestive enzymes at the expense of immune system enzymes. Colon cleansing helps the body rid itself of toxic matter. This in turn allows the colon to aid in the digestive process and allows the production of immune system enzymes to return to normal. Vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds, nuts and whole grains are very high in fiber content. A high-fiber diet gives you a much-needed cushion
in softening the stool as well as decreasing bowel transit time. Fiber is of two types: soluble and insoluble. Both are different in nature but both are necessary. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and increases beneficial bacteria, while insoluble fiber is especially beneficial for elimination and prevention of constipation.
Green foods Green foods, which contain high chlorophyll content, makes them perfect for colon cleansing. Aside from cleansing, chlorophyll soothes and heals damaged tissue in the digestive tract. It plays a pivotal part in preparing your body to generate more oxygen. It also draws out toxins. Because of this, chlorophyll is often been termed as “the internal deodorant.”
Water Water is a medicine for all diseases. water is the universal solvent, and lack of water can lead to constipation and toxicity in the bowel and kidneys.

M
ost cases of colon cancer begin as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. Cancerous tumors found in the colon or rectum also may spread to other parts of the body. Cancer of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer) is a malignant tumor arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. If signs and symptoms of colon cancer do appear, they may include changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, persistent cramping, gas or abdominal pain. Since colon cancer can grow for years without causing any symptoms, it's best to get regular colon cancer screenings. Almost all men and women age 50 and older should have a colon cancer screening. Screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. For normal risk individuals, screening tests begin at age 50 and the preferred approach is a screening colonoscopy every 10 years; an alternate strategy consists of annual stool test for blood and a flexible sigmoidoscopic exam every three to five years. Special screening programs are used for those with a family history of colorectal cancer. Colonoscopic surveillance (also called screening colonoscopy) needs to be available at more frequent intervals for individuals at high risk for colon cancer (for instance, those with a personal history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps; family history of colorectal cancer; non-hereditary polyposis; colorectal cancer; or a pre-disposing condition such as inflammatory bowel disease. Since your genes cannot be changed, if there is a family history of colon polyps or cancer, a colonoscopy should be performed to remove the polyps before they become malignant.
This dreaded disease spares no one! Get screened early and follow these tips for prevention
Possible prevention Food sources In the area of prevention, researchers are looking at the effects of curcumin (found in curry), resveratrol (found in red wine), ginger and the Mediterranean diet on the growth and development of colon cancer. Recent research suggests that a high fiber, low-fat diet plays a role in prevention; how great a role it plays is unclear. Although the exact cause of colorectal cancer is not known, it is possible to prevent many colon cancers through: diet and exercise. It is important to manage the risk factors you can control, such as diet and exercise.
Shift in diet A detox program, in most cases shall include a mental shift in attitude towards diet, improving nutrition, removing toxins, returning the desired flora in your internal system, maintaining a balanced pH level in the body and improving the overall mind and body relationship. Diet plays an important role in preventing the development of colon cancer. Diets high in fat and low in fruits and vegetables, such as those that include red meat, fried foods and high-fat dairy products, may increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
Lemon cleanse A body cleanse diet, is a diet that aims to clean and remove harmful toxins from your body. A well known detox diet for your body is the increasingly popular lemon detox diet, which incorporates a number of ingredients and requires you to consume a drink of these ingredients once every morning, then drinking water with a hint of lemon juice throughout the day. Generally, a healthy and safe detox diet will not require you to starve yourself, and it contains highly nutritious food that can help to boost your metabolism.
Detoxification is an efficient process of removing toxins from the body. The bodies natural detoxification system had simply not evolved to deal with the future man made pollutants that were to come. With the increase of toxins within the environment and foods we eat, it is not surprising that the majority of people are at a level of toxicity that is past the point that the bodies own natural detoxification system can cope with. Regular detoxification will help avoid serious problems and keep you feeling better, both mentally and physically. Detoxification kits may be bought from health food stores, or a qualified practitioner or natural physician can recommend detox products.
Exercise While you are doing your colon cleanse, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep and exercise. Exercise is believed to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Light exercise is also a good way of getting the blood circulating in your body. Gentle, no-impact exercise safe and beneficial for people of all ages. There are tons of exercise programs and plans out there, or just walking for at least 12 to 15 minutes a day is beneficial to the colon function.

Candida
101
Normally an inoffensive yeast organism that can be found inside our bodies, Candida can turn severely problematic if it multiplies and causes infection
T
he scientific term for yeast infection is Candidiasis. This was derived from the yeast or fungus-like organism called Candida Albicans that causes this condition. Fungus thrives in dark and moist areas such as the vaginal area. Certain conditions such as pregnancy and diabetes make women more prone to acquiring this infection. Pregnancy causes a change in the metabolic balance and vaginal acidity of women, and fungus is also known to thrive among individuals with high sugar levels or those with defects in sugar metabolism. The top three signs of yeast infection are itching, burning and pain, and discharge. The infection can cause intense itching, followed by rashes or redness due to scratching. Another indication is a burning or painful sensation in the vaginal area, especially when urinating. Some women also report of vaginal discharge that is usually described as odorless, white, and cheeselike. Some report a starch-like odor.
When Candidiasis causes more harm Sometimes, however, under certain conditions, Candidiasis can mutate into a fungal infection. The aggressive fungal form invades the body’s systems and causes a great deal of damage. This happens when there are imbalances in the body, such as changes in blood sugar levels because of diabetes, changes in hormone levels as a result of pregnancy, puberty, menopause and menstruation, changes in normal gut flora due to intestinal infections or the intake of antibiotics, or a compromised immune system, such as AIDS. The fungal form of Candida is a far worse than the simple yeast infection. The fungal-form of Candida develops aggressive roots that penetrate the intestinal walls, and create the opportunity for partially digested food particles to penetrate the blood stream and cause food sensitivities. The fungus also ferments the sugars in the colon, causing gas, excessive bloating of the stomach, and extreme discomfort. The fungal form of Candida also attacks the nervous system. Sufferers of fungal Candida experience mood swings, depression, fogginess of the brain, and poor concentration. There are
Some foods actually make Candida worse! Although a yeast infection itself is not considered dangerous, it can be very bothersome and uncomfortable. It is also highly contagious if the infected individual has unprotected sex with another. Other health problems usually associated with Candidiasis include urinary tract infections and possible complications during pregnancy. Under the supervision of a doctor, sufferers of Candidiasis may be prescribed various oral medications such as Diflucan or Fluconazole, as well as topical treatments. Home remedies include both digesting and topically applying yogurt and garlic. Drinking cranberry juice is also said to work. As in any medical case, however, always consult a doctor before trying any of these.

several theories as to why this occurs. One such theory holds that when the fungus pierces the wall of the intestine and allows the partially digested food to pass into the bloodstream, exorphins are released. They can affect the neurological reactions by switching them on and off. Thus creating the depression and mood swings. There are hormonal changes associated with fungal Candida that aren’t too pretty either. Severe menstrual pain, thyroid conditions, and auto-immune deficiencies are known to be a result of fungal Candida. Other symptoms that are hormone related and indicate a Candida overgrowth are pain in the muscles and joints, sugar cravings, athlete’s foot, thrush of the mouth, sinusitis, poor concentration, and intolerance of perfume. The problems don’t end when you start treatment. A leaky gut and a general detox is sometimes in order, since Candida can produce up to 100 different toxins.
The connection between Candida and cancer There is a connection between candida and cancer, asserts Doug Kaufmann, author and nutrition expert who has studied yeast infections and candida for over 30 years. Kaufman’s studies demonstrate that fungi in foods, as well as the overuse of antibiotics, lead to intestinal overgrowth that can compromise our health in many ways, including causing cancer. As proof of his research, Doug Kaufmann devised a diet based on the widely examined problem of mycotoxin contamination of the grains we eat. Children with documented cases of leukemia saw the disease vanish after some simple changes in their diet. After a cycle of antibiotics use, Doug Kaufmann also says, the candida/ yeast/fungus overgrowth that comes in its wake can be lethal. And this drug-induced imbalance in the intestinal flora is a reality, to different degrees, in 90% of the American population. Since cancer and yeast infection have been linked, any effort you make to reduce your yeast overgrowth will not only improve your general health. It will also diminish the real, albeit worstcase cancer threat that this condition represents. In this area there are specialists who can guide you, as well as simple and effective self-tests and selftreatments. First thing’s first: be sure to avoid the foods that actually nourish candida/ yeast infection. The biggest villains are sugar and white flour products, refined foods, and commercially processed meats, which are full of hormones. Eat as much non-processed food as possible, with lots of vegetables. Read up on the blood type diet, or any other natural foods diet that attracts you. Be sure to use Oil of Oregano for six weeks in combination with the diet. Oil of Oregano will be able to diminish or disappear your candida/ yeast infection. Natural hormone creams such as Prosperine can be helpful too.
Candida Home Remedies: Simple Yet Effective Tea tree oil mouthwash For oral thush: Mix a few drops of tea tree oil (approximately five to eight drops) in a glass of either warm or cold water. Gargle the mixture for about a minute. Let the solution touch all the parts of the mouth (throat, palate, cheek lining). Be careful not to swallow the solution. Gargle two times a day (preferably one in the morning and one before sleeping).
How to avoid yeast infection 1. Don't douche or clean inside the vagina. Do not use vaginal deodorants or perfumed soaps when washing the external area. You can strip the body of the natural elements that keep the fungus in check. At best, use plain water or a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. 2. Avoid tight clothes (including underwear), especially ones made of nylon. These prevent proper aeration (breathing) of the skin. It encourages moisture to form in the body, which is prime breeding ground for fungi. 3. Drink plenty of water to keep the body cool and to flush out toxins (including those produced by the candida fungus) out of your body. 4. Have a good number of servings of bananas, yogurt, and garlic. These foods have been found to have lots of anti-fungal properties and if part of your regular diet, the chances of avoiding candidiasis are great. 5. Do not skip meals and avoid keeping your stomach empty for long periods of time. A body functions best when working on routine time. Having irregular eating habits have been observed to increase the chances of candida overgrowth.
For vaginal yeast infection: Add a few drops of tea tree oil onto a tampon or sterile gauze and apply on to the affected area. Replace every four to six hours.
Plain yogurt Make sure it has absolutely no sugar and other ingredients added to it. The yogurt should contain live lactobacillus acidophilus, which are good bacteria that keep candida albicans in check. For vaginal yeast infection: Dip tampon in the yogurt and insert into the vagina. Use twice a day until the symptoms clear up and repeat one more day, just to be sure.
Change your diet! A Simple Home Test to Check if You Have a Yeast Infection First thing in the morning, before you put anything in your mouth, get a clear glass of water. Better still, leave it by your bed the night before. Work up a bit of saliva, and then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a candida yeast infection, you will see strings (like legs) traveling down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, or “cloudy” saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If nothing develops in 30 minutes, you’re probably Candida/ yeast free.
Candida seems to thrive on highsugar diets. So in order to “starve” the fungi, go on a low-to-no sugar diet, using sugar alternatives at best. Continue with this diet for as long as symptoms persist. In addition to the altered diet, make sure you receive sufficient doses of vitamins (A, B-complex, C) as well as minerals (iron and zinc). This solution works best when the symptoms are becoming systemic, meaning that different parts of the body are affected all at the same time. (For example, in addition to vaginal yeast infection, you have also contracted skin and stomach problems as well.) Diabetics, however, need to consult with a medical professional before undergoing this measure.
For skin problems (cutaneous candidiasis) Apply yogurt directly on the affected area. Not only will the yogurt address the fungal infection, but it will lend a soothing effect and relieve severe itching and weeping. Let yogurt stand for an hour or so and wash off well. Keep affected area dry. Apply two to three times a day.
Apple cider vinegar For oral thrush: Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to one cup cool water. Gargle with solution. Do not swallow. After gargling, dip a cotton swab in undiluted apple cider vinegar and apply directly on to the oral sores. Do not rinse. Allow to stand overnight. For vaginal yeast infection: Create a douching solution of one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and two cups of water. Add one garlic clove and allow the solution to stand for two hours before using for douching.

The argument in legalizing Magic Mushrooms
The mighty mushroom
Considered a delicacy in various cultures, this food—neither a vegetable or an herb, but a fungus—contains many health benefits
Selective legal enforcement about magic mushrooms or “shrooms” (also called psilocybin mushrooms, that contain the medicinal compounds psilocybin and psilocin)—whether in the dry or fresh form, or the cultivation of it—still continues to be an issue around the world. For believers in this mushroom, the legal status of its use is a bafflement: although many experts affirm that the effects experienced from psilocybin are caused by a poisonous nature of the compound, the National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health (a branch of the Center For Disease Control) rated the psilocybin in a mushroom less toxic in comparison with regular aspirin. On the contrary, their positive effects—celebrated as sacred experiences to various cultures from all over the world--are truly remarkable. Among these positive effects are: Possible interruption of cluster sequences in those suffering from cluster headaches; Life changing spiritual experience; An increase in a more interesting or amusing experience while doing repetitive or routinary tasks A more creative, philosophical or deepthinking experience: ideas flow more easily; Mood lifts, euphoria; Giggling, laughter, giddiness; Intense feelings of wonder;
M
ushrooms are actually fungi. Of the 14,000 species known, only about 3,000 are edible. According to nutritionist Winston Craig, “about 700 have known medicinal properties, and fewer than one percent are recognized as poisonous.” Many people use them in dishes, as they impart a more intense flavor, and lately, in the US, mushroom extracts are increasingly being used in nutraceutical products and sports drinks. Mushrooms contain about 80 to 90 percent water, and are very low in calories (only 100 calories per ounce). They have very little sodium and fat, and eight to 10 percent of the dry weight is fiber. Hence, they are an ideal food for persons following a weight management program or a diet for hypertensives. They’re a fabulous source for the following: Potassium, a mineral that helps lower elevated blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke. One medium portabella mushroom has even more potassium than a banana or a glass of orange juice. One serving of mushrooms also provides about 20 to 40 percent of the daily value of copper, a mineral that has cardioprotective properties. Riboflavin, niacin, and selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant that works with vitamin E to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Male health professionals who consumed twice the recommended daily intake of selenium cut their risk of prostate cancer by 65 percent. In the Baltimore study on Aging, men with the lowest blood selenium levels were four to five times more likely to have prostate cancer compared to those with the highest selenium levels.

Paradoxical feeling of a normalcy and deep alteration of psyche; Sensation of insight. We also see that many scientists are investigating a hallucinogenic chemical present in magic mushrooms, which could be a possible new treatment for not only depression and anxiety but also for drug dependence. This move is the follow-up of a study concluding that the psilocybin can bring long lasting positive changes in behavior and mood.
Mushrooms to reduce the risk of cancer The most commonly consumed mushroom in the United States is Agaricus bisporus or the white button mushroom. A. bisporus has two other forms - Crimini or brown mushrooms with a more earthy flavor and firmer texture, and Portabella mushrooms with a large umbrellashaped cap and meaty flavor. All three mushrooms, but especially the fresh button mushrooms, possess substances that inhibit the activity of aromatase (an enzyme involved in estrogen production), and 5-alpha-reductase (an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT). The latest findings show that white button mushrooms can reduce the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer. An extract of white button mushrooms decreased cell proliferation and decreased tumor size in a dose-dependent manner. The chemoprotective effect can be seen with an intake of about 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of mushrooms per day. Shiitake mushrooms have been used for centuries by the Chinese and Japanese to treat colds and flu. Lentinan, a beta-glucan isolated from the fruiting body of shiitake mushrooms, appears to stimulate the immune system, help fight infection, and demonstrates anti-tumor activity.
TRIVIA! Glow in the dark mushrooms With the arrival of Japan’s rainy season, a mysterious type of green, glow-in-the-dark mushroom begins to sprout in Wakayama prefecture. The Mycena lux-coeli mushrooms, known locally as shii no tomobishi-dake (literally, “chinquapin glow mushrooms”), sprout from fallen chinquapin trees. As they grow, a chemical reaction involving luciferin (a light-emitting pigment contained within the mushrooms) occurs, causing them to glow a ghostly green.
Restoring your balance with
mushrooms
Their legendary effects on health prove that they help build the body’s resistance to disease and a host of other health troubles
M
ushrooms are valuable health food--low in calories, high in vegetable proteins, chitin, iron, zinc, fiber, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Mushrooms also have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Their legendary effects in promoting good health and vitality and increasing your body's adaptive abilities have been supported by recent studies. These studies suggest that mushrooms are probiotic: they help our body strengthen itself and fight off illness by maintaining physiological homeostasis—that is, restoring our bodies’ balance and natural resistance to disease. Here are the mushrooms world’s frontrunners in the field of health:
Agaricus Mushroom Agaricus is the most widely consumed mushroom in many countries, where it is regarded as a health food, due to its medicinal properties. Agaricus is traditionally known as "God’s Mushroom" because of its near miraculous curative benefits to a wide range of disorders. People have used it to overcome numerous diseases and disorders relating to the immune system, cardiovascular system, digestion, and for weight management, diabetes, chronic and acute allergies, cataracts, hearing difficulties, stress syndrome, chronic fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, and disorders of the liver.
Cordyceps Mushroom Cordyceps can be a powerful stimulant for macrophage activity, strengthening your immune system’s ability to fight against bacterial and viral infection. Human clinical studies indicate that Cordyceps can be effective for treatment of high cholesterol, poor libido/impotence, arrhythmia, lung cancer, and chronic kidney failure. It is also reported that Cordyceps causes smooth muscle relaxation. This can make it especially helpful for treating chronic coughs, asthma, and other bronchial conditions.
Maitake Mushroom Maitake is also known by the name Dancing Mushroom, famous for its taste and health benefits. In Japan, Maitake Mushroom is called "King of Mushrooms". The fruiting body and the mycelium of Maitake are used medicinally. In China and Japan, Maitake Mushrooms have been consumed for 3000
years. Years ago in Japan, the Maitake had monetary value and was worth its weight in silver. Historically, Maitake has been used as a tonic and adaptogen. It was used as a food to help promote wellness and vitality. Traditionally, consumption of the mushroom was thought to prevent high blood pressure and cancer--two applications that have been the focal point of modern research. Clinical research with Maitake Mushroom has increased dramatically in the past several years. Laboratory studies have shown that Maitake Mushroom extract can inhibit the growth of tumors and stimulate the immune system of cancerous mice.
Reishi Mushroom Reishi has been called an “immune potentiator.” Recent studies have indicated that Reishi carries a number of other benefits: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and antiviral through inducing interferon production (including increasing antiHIV activity). It can also lower blood pressure, offers cardiotonic action through lowering serum cholesterol, and is an expectorant and antitussive. It also protectst the liver, preventing hepatitis, and is a good detox agent. It also protects against ionizing radiation. Reishi contains calcium, iron and phosphorus as well as vitamins C, D, and B--including pantothenic acid, which is essential to nerve function and the adrenal glands.
All about Reishi Reishi mushroom is also known as Ganoderma Lucidum, one of the older herbal mushrooms used today. Used for centuries in China, the mushroom was considered rare and treatments were reserved for royalty. Technological advancements in the cultivation of Reishi, however, has made the benefits of this mushroom available to almost everyone. The Reishi mushroom is thought to improve the body's immune system and aid in rehabilitating the immune system. Unlike some drugs developed in Western medicine, which the body builds up immunity to after a period of time, Reishi has the ability to constantly keep the body guessing, thus promoting a stronger immune system. Among those who can benefit most from Reishi are those who suffer from simple mental problems such as stress, concentration problems, fatigue, and sleep deprivation. Reishi Mushroom has also been known to prevent health problems that may lead to heart conditions. It is claimed that it can also help people with liver disorders, problematic blood circulation, lung disorders and even help alleviate symptoms of HIV. The Reishi Mushroom is also known to increase the delivery of nutrients to the skin. It may also help control acne, minimize fine lines and age spots—all which can only make you look younger! As with all types of treatments, however, one should always consult with a medical practitioner before starting any type of therapy or alternative remedies.
Shiitake Mushroom Shiitake (for centuries called "Elixir of Life" ) has been licensed as an anti-cancer drug by the Japanese FDA. Lentinan has shown some effect on bowel cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer. Lentinan stimulates the production of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells and can potentiate the effect of AZT in the anti-viral treatment of AIDS. Shiitake is rich in several anti-oxidants (selenium, uric acid and vitamins A, E, and C) as well as Vitamin D. Shiitake mushrooms may also lower blood pressure in those with hypertension, lower serum cholesterol levels, increase libido, and like Reishi, stimulate the production of interferon which has antiviral effects. Shiitake has also proven effective against hepatitis in some cases.
Yun Zhi Mushroom Yun Zhi, or the Cloud Mushroom, has been used to dispel dampness, reduce phlegm, treat pulmonary infections, to strengthen the tendons and bones, for vital energy, and to support liver health.
TRIVIA! Mushrooms in food The Pharaohs prized mushrooms as a delicacy, and the Greeks believed that mushrooms provided strength for warriors in battle. The Romans regarded mushrooms as a gift from God and served them only on festive occasions, while the Chinese treasured them as a health food.

Silver Gets Big
Though it’s had its detractors over the years, the use of silver gets vindicated by big business
S
ports socks, washing machines, food containers, soap and band-aids : What do these items have in common? Colloidal Silver, nano-sized silver particles that have been used to manufacture everyday products by industrial giants
to kill germs. The “powers” of colloidal silver have been lauded for years, only to be shuttered away in the shadows by penicillin and other bacteria killers conjured up in the pharmaceutical labs.
The results of shunning this natural “nano-sized” (nano = one billionth of a meter) antibiotic has been that diseases have evolved to build up a resistance to man-made antibiotics, and now scientists are scrambling to find “better” replacements for the antibiotics that have survived less than 100 years. There are critics that hypothesize that the large pharmaceutical companies are pressuring the regulatory agencies to prevent nano-sized silver products from being sold directly to the public without the industry giants taking their cut. Websites have sold silver nanoparticles in solution known as colloidal silver without the ability to mention what the product can cure.
‘War Against Germs Has Silver Lining’ Curad USA, makers of hospital bandages lined with nano-silver particles now has released Curad Silver Bandages for the home use instead of a Band-aid. Curad claims “that silver reduced bacterial growth like Staph. aureaus, E. coli, E. hirae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.” Samsung Electronics has introduced a refrigerator and new laundry washing machine that uses silver ions to sanitize the laundry and eliminate 99 percent of odor causing bacteria (sold at Lowe’s and Best Buy). Plank, a Boston company, has launched a new soap for Yoga users that lists silver as the main active ingredient. The company has a toothpaste and shampoo in R&D that is imbued with silver. Asia has become the largest consumer of products that uses the nanosilver as a antimicrobial ingredient. Colloidal silver is known to kill virus, is it possible they are guarding against bird flu? While some agencies strive to prevent you from buying colloidal silver online, the EPA is clear that we NOW have silver in our drinking supply and has, for health purposes established a daily reference dose for silver in drinking water at 350 micrograms (u.g) and a critical dose at 1400 u.g. In contrast, international health bodies, such as the World Health Organization, have not established such standards for silver since its toxicity is very low. Silver “becomes more active against microbes when it’s made into small particles because they can cover more surface area when they come

into direct contact with bacteria,” according to Andrew Maynard, physicist and chief scientific adviser for studies on Emerging Nanotechnologies underway at Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. Adidas, and Polartec have licensed silver coated nylon fabric known as X-Static (Noble Biomaterials Inc.) to incorporate antimicrobial silver in athletic and outdoor clothing for their ability to kill odors and promote thermal properties. Brooks Sports sells a line (HVAC) of socks, caps and shirts that use silver to differentiate them from all others. ARC Outdoors uses silver infused fabric from NanHorizon Inc. to produce antimicrobial socks for the U.S. military. SmartSilver is brand of odor-eliminating underwear, stocking caps and gloves that kills bacteria on contact using nano-silver. ARC sells to Wal-Mart, Bass ProShops, Cabelaís and wants to expand to hospital products such as sheets and surgical scrubs. Sharper Image has introduced a plastic food storage container that is infused with nano-silver particles that they claim will keep food fresher, longer. So what diseases will colloidal silver display benefits for? Bacteria and virus are known to be killed by silver suspended in a liquid of nanoparticle size called colloidal silver. In addition to the bacterial growths like Staph. aureaus, E. coli, E. hirae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa mentioned by Curad and Maynard, yeast, fungus and virus have all died in tests using colloidal silver. So is yeast infection a yeast? Yes. Is ringworm a fungus? Yes. Is acne caused by bacteria? Yes. Is sinusitis caused by a bacteria infection? Yes. Is silver used in infants eyes? Yes. Is silver used for burn victims? Yes. Is colloidal silver an immune system support? Yes. Will colloidal silver be the answer for bird flu? Is bird flu a virus? Long live colloidal silver!
Feature Avoiding Colds and Flu Naturally—Silver-use Included! This year it is of utmost importance that we pay attention to strengthening our immune systems naturally. Using certain herbs, foods, supplements and homeopathic remedies can help you avoid catching a cold or flu and build your immune system. If you do catch a virus, they can help relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration and severity of the illness. What most people don’t realize is how much your daily diet has an impact on the strength of your immune system. If you or your child are eating sweets daily, processed foods, junk food, drinking soda or other sweetened beverages regularly, you are weakening your immunity and will be more likely to catch viruses. One teaspoon of sugar (soda has about 9 to 11 tablespoons) can weaken your immune system for 4 hours. This is why so many people are now having an extreme difficulty fighting illnesses, besides repeated antibiotic use. Try eating more vegetables, at least 4-5 servings a day. Along with eggs for breakfast, have a few pieces of steamed asparagus, some spinach, squash or a few tomato slices. Have a salad with lunch, and at least two vegetables with dinner. Fresh fruit can also bolster vitamin C and help build resistance. Eat berries daily. Especially frozen to freezing berries, that break the cell wall and releases more color pigments containing the beneficial bioflavanoids. Avoid all white flour (eat only whole grains), baked goods, sugary cereals, cookies, cakes, candy, and sweets. You’ll feel so much stronger than you realize! Colloidal Silver Also consider using Colloidal Silver for excellent anti-viral protection! It works great to help avoid or reduce symptoms of colds and flu. The body has an innate ability to rejuvenate and restore itself to optimum health. When taken daily, Colloidal Silver acts as an optimal immune system supporter by helping the body fight invaders. Medical tests indicate no known adverse effects from the use of properly prepared Colloidal Silver, and there has never been a recorded case of drug interaction with any other medication. The body does not develop a tolerance to Colloidal Silver and no allergic reaction has ever been recorded. How Colloidal Silver Works The presence of Colloidal Silver near an invader disables its oxygen-metabolism enzyme, its chemical lung, so to say. Within a few minutes, the invader suffocates and dies, and is cleared out of our bodies by the immune, lymphatic and elimination systems. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, Colloidal Silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different than those enzymes of primitive single-celled life. Thus, Colloidal Silver is absolutely safe for humans, reptiles, plants and all multi-celled living matter. Good Natural Vitamins a MUST It is very important to take a good quality, plant-based not synthetic, multi-
vitamin/ mineral supplement daily which supplies you with vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, proanthocyanadines, bioflavanoids, green foods, enzymes and more. Taking 2000-4000 mg. of Vitamin C every day will help you fight infections. Eating garlic regularly or taking odorless garlic capsules helps fight viral, bacterial, and yeast infections. Bee propolis is known as Russian penicillin and is often found in natural vitamin supplements. It is collected by bees to protect the hives from infection. Super Antioxidants These help reduce the signs of aging, along with aches and pains, but they can greatly increase your immune system, being 20 - 50 times more potent than Vitamin C and E. Using Echinacea (purple coneflower) herbal extract regularly can help you avoid or reduce the severity and duration of viral illnesses. 40 drops for an adult taken 4-6 times a day at the first sign of a cold can help you avoid it completely. Olive Leaf extract is proven more powerful than penicillin in fighting upper respiratory infections, sinus, strep and throat infections! Those with autoimmune diseases should consider using Astragalus instead of Echinacea to strengthen the spleen and immune system. It is a safe, long term immune system tonic. Oil of Oregano High-quality, full-strength Oil of Oregano is a very powerful agent against bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections. It is an excellent general tonic and immune stimulant. You can take one or two capsules a day, or place one or two drops of the oil under the tongue to go immediately into the blood and lymph system. Four to five drops can also be placed in juice and taken several times a day. This can be your best defense against the flu. Not to be underestimated is the value of maintaining good colon health. The Chinese have long equated respiratory problems with poor bowel function. If waste product is not being removed in a timely fashion then toxins build up in the body, and particularly the respiratory system. Be sure to take herbs which perform a good bowel detox, as well as keep the intestines in fighting shape with friendly bacteria, such as acidophilus or bifidophilus. Enzymes are a must. Take a broad spectrum enzyme combination, both with meals and between meals. Regular daily exercise and fresh air will also keep your lymph moving and your immune system strong. Try rebounding (jumping on a mini-trampoline) everyday, even if it's just 2-5 minutes, several times a day. Be sure to wear a hat when out in the cold. Getting plenty of sleep and daily relaxation to reduce stress will also help. Keeping your self strong and healthy not only protects you from the flu, but many other ills as well.
Silver’s
bad
rap What’s the fuss about colloidal silver immune support supplements?
P
atented in the early 20th century, colloidal silver is now an over the counter supplement, easily available on the Web as well, heralded as a cure-all by some and declared a placebo by others. Prior to the discovery of penicillin, colloidal silver was used as a natural antibiotic. The new antibacterial agent was the drug of favor worldwide. But it was shoved to the backburners of medical consciousness and found little use after 1929. Silver in different forms, however, continued to be used in the world’s burn centers (silver sulfadiazine) and millions of babies have had a silver concentrate flushed into their eyes immediately after birth. So if this natural antibiotic was once used so widely, why did the physicians stop using it? Did bacteria develop a resistance to colloidal silver? Did it stop working? Not at all. The doubt cast on its usage started when irresponsible manufacturers produced a solution of silver chloride. This is not desirable as it will cause the silver to accumulate under the skin, giving a light blue hue to the skin. There are no known side effects in taking colloidal silver that is properly made and consumed. There are no recorded deaths from taking this immunity-boosting supplement, but cases as aforementioned made the production and sale of colloidal silver controversial. Colloidal silver, when ingested in the amounts recommended as a supplement, has clinically shown to guard against viral infections and bacterial infections. Unsolicited testimonials in hundreds of web pages also mention its antibacterial benefits. The concentration of 1100 ppm used to be the “standard” available in 4-oz. bottles. It can be made up to 5 ppm in the home with a 9-volt battery, two silver leads in a glass of distilled water.

Detox Diet: Juice Fasting Recipes
J
uice fasting is gaining popularity as a great way to detoxify. When toxins accumulate in the body, they feel sluggish and have a poor immune system. Juice fasting is easy, as fruits are readily obtainable and all that is required additionally is a juicer.
Beginners should start out slow and try it out for one day. By juice fasting, you are limiting your intake to juices only. Fruit juice is high in sugar, so if you are a diabetic or otherwise in need of monitoring your sugar intake, take precaution. Consult with your doctor before you commence any fast or diet. Also, do not juice fast for prolonged periods, like more than 3 days--not unless your doctor agrees that it is safe for you to do so. The following are sample recipes that can help give you an idea of combinations of fruits and vegetables to use together:
Recipe 1: Vegetable Juice Combo 2 Swiss chard leaves 1/2 beetroot 2 or 3 sprigs of watercress 3 carrots 1 celery stalk Wash with filtered or distilled water, cut and put in juicer.
