This is a tale of rags to riches, of hard work and not a little luck, and the comforts that were enjoyed by the privileged few in the ramshackle colonial outpost of Johannesburg. Thomas Cullinan arrived in the City in 1887 a humble bricklayer, but by 1896 he was able to build The View, a fabulous statement of wealth on the Parktown ridge. The richness of detail and ornamentation quite takes the breath away, and the impact of the interiors is heightened by the regalia and history of the Transvaal Scottish, which is proudly on display. This spectacular mansion has been beautifully restored. We will explore the house and be enthralled by the story of the Cullinans and the history of the Transvaal Scottish, and we will also learn of domestic life in Victorian and Edwardian Johannesburg. But the highlight for many will be tea and scones served in grand surroundings! GUIDES : Dr Alexandra Parker and Monique Jefferson McDonald PARK : The View, 23 Ridge Road, Parktown TIME : 14h00 DURATION : 2 hours COST : R140.00 for members and R200.00 for non-members – which includes tea and scones. Grade 3 Science projects Our Grade 3's are all budding scientists! Well done to all on presenting fabulous projects on carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. Thank you for the hard work, time and effort put into the final presentation.

Grade 6 Sweet and Savoury: Friday Our Grade 6s will be selling yummy sweet and savoury treats at first break on Friday. Children should bring cash if they want to buy anything as they won’t be able to use their cards. Physio corner: benefits of stretching your hamstrings One of the first things we do when we wake up in the morning is to stretch out our muscles from their sleepy state. Stretching is an important activity that should be done daily to keep our muscles supple and strong. SHC Primary School News

One of the most important muscles that we usually forget to stretch is our Hamstring Muscle… the big muscle behind our leg that runs from our hips to our knees. The Hamstring muscle is made up of three muscles and plays an important role in walking, running and jumping. The hamstrings job is to bend your knees and to move your hips backwards to help you stand up straight. If our Hamstring muscle is tight we are unable to touch our toes. However, this could lead to further discomfort and postural imbalances. Tight and weak hamstrings lead to an unhealthy and unhappy body, especially at your lower back. Tight hamstrings can even affect your posture at the desk, or how your take part in activities on the floor or on the playground. So how can we stretch our Hamstring muscles? The easiest way is to sit on the floor with your legs in front of you with your knees flat on the floor and stretch towards your toes. You may feel a burning feeling at the back of your legs which means you are doing the stretch correctly. Try hold the position for 20-30 seconds to make sure the muscles got a good stretch. Sports Department news Inter-house Field Events: Please take note that the Inter-house Field Events have been moved to Wednesday 1 August during the Action Week. It is only for Grades 3 to 6, from 08:00 to 13:00 during the normal school day. There will be no co-curriculars for all Grades (Gr 1-6) on the day of the Inter-house field events. Children can be collected from school after field events at 13:00. Hockey Fixtures: The hockey fixture on Friday 27 July has been cancelled. Fun Sports Clinic: The Sports Department will be running a Sports Clinic in the August holidays, from Monday 13 to Friday 17 August, for Grades 00 to 6. Please see the attached flyer and return the reply slip to Mr van der Merwe if you are interested in sending your child/ren. We have a movie star in our midst! Vangile Zwakala (5L) is a lead actor in the movie Nsanguluko which will play on SABC 1 on Sunday 29 July at 8pm. She plays the part of Zinhle. In the fantasy drama, Vangile stars alongside esteemed, award-winning South African actors Mothusi Magano (Tsotsi, Of Good Report) and Tumie Ngumla (INumber Number, Rhythm City). The movie was shot in Johannesburg in November 2017. Nsanguluko is directed by Namibian director Perivi Katjavivi who also directed the supernatural film, The Unseen. Nsanguluko is part of a four-episode series of standalone films produced by Fireworx Media and Ngonyama Kapital. Foundation Phase reports The following is a guideline to help parents understand our grading system: 4 – I did more than was expected of me. (WOW!) 3 – I did what was expected of me. (Good job!) 2 – I did most of what was expected of me. (Great effort!) 1 – I didn’t do much of what was expected of me. (I will need more support to help me understand.) Parking safety Please do not park next to the orange cones or over the pedestrian crossings. The parking area becomes heavily congested and cars are unable to move freely. We also ask you not to travel at speed on the school property. Our children’s safety must be our first concern. Please be courteous and aware of pedestrians and other cars when you are dropping or fetching your child. Pre-Primary news Story Evening: Wrap up warmly, wear your pyjamas, bring your blanket, teddy bear and favourite book to our story evening on 26 July at 17:30. Looking forward to seeing you there! Parent Interviews: These will be held on 31 July and 1 August, between 13:30 and 16:30. Please note that these meetings are compulsory. It is imperative that we discuss your child’s progress with you. Research shows that the more parents are involved in their children’s schooling, the more the children succeed and enjoy their school day. Feedback regarding Mandela Day: • We had many valuable discussions with our classes about Mandela and his role in South Africa.

• We chopped vegetables and buttered bread to send to Meals on Wheels.

We donated sweets to initiatives in Eldorado Park and further afield, where 1500 party packs were made for the underprivileged.

Congratulations: We congratulate Tshimollo Mazibuko in Playgroup on the birth of her baby brother, Mazwi Lerumo. May God bless him life-long! Mandela Day A BIG THANK you to the Sacred Heart community for your generous support of toiletries and clothing for Mandela Day. Our goal is to pack 360 boxes. Each child at the orphanage will receive a box that contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, Vaseline, facecloth and a soft toy. We have completed 200 boxes. Next term, we will complete another 160 boxes. Stationery and textbook lists for 2019 Lists will be sent home in the first week of next term, to give parents time to source everything needed for next year.
