When parents ask me what exercises their child should be doing… again I repeat… I say PLAY, PLAY, PLAY. Especially outside or in a park where there are jungle gyms. I love Jungle Gyms so much for the following reasons: 1. Studies have proven that the exercises that children usually perform while using a typical jungle gym can make them stronger as well as assist with the development of muscle tone and structural muscles that the body needs to maintain strength and posture. Hanging off monkey bars,or climbing up and down the ladders and ramps are good for the development of muscle tone, and because these movements are different to the movements that children use when playing on the ground, different sets of muscles get a chance to work out and to strengthen. It is especially good for kids with low muscle tone. 2. It has also been proven that regular exercise on a jungle gym can be used to improve hand- and eye-coordination. Moving from one position to another, climbing with hands and feet, and having to negotiate different heights and movements all help to improve this vital skill. 3. A child’s imagination is always very active and a jungle gym offers a whole world of wonders to a child. This helps to build their creativity which in turn improves their problem-solving skills. 4. Often, children who play on a jungle gym meet other children that they would not necessarily have had the opportunity to meet, and this develops social skills and communication skills.
With the warm weather and summer approaching, take your kids to the park and let them explore and have fun. But don’t forget the sunscreen! Childhood Trauma and Its Lifelong Health Effects More Prevalent Among Minorities The study finds three out of five adults across the U.S. had at least one adverse experience in their childhood, such as divorce, a parent's death, physical or emotional abuse, or a family member's incarceration or substance abuse problem. A quarter of adults have at least three such experiences in childhood, which – according to other research — increases their risk for most common chronic diseases, from heart disease and cancer to depression and substance abuse. "This is the first study of this kind that allows us to talk about adverse childhood experience as a public health problem in the same way we talk about obesity or hypertension or any other highly prevalent population risk factor," says Adam Schickedanz, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, who was not involved in the research. "Up until now, we haven't really had a study that takes a national look."
