PRE-PRIMARY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER DATE: 16 November 2016

Dear Pre-Primary and Primary School Parents

GENERAL: FOR ALL PARENTS Important Information Re Orientation &Registration 2017: Saturday 3 December 2016 The whole purpose of this event, held annually on the last Saturday before the school year ends, is to ensure that parents are informed about what is happening at the school from a governance, curriculum and parental engagement perspective. It is also the only opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher and the specialist teachers before the New Year begins. Most importantly, the class teachers for 2017 will hand out a pack containing the administration forms to be completed on the day, as well as other vital information for parents about getting ready for 2017, so that we start the academic year off immediately on the 11th January. Registration: The most important administrative process for the morning is the checking, completion and signing of three forms: Re-Registration (white), Indemnity/Health (pink) and Account Payment Details (blue). The first two forms need to be completed by a guardian; however, the Account Payment Details form must be completed by the person who is responsible for the school fees. If, for some reason the person responsible for the fees cannot attend, the Re-Registration pack may be taken home for signing and returned on Monday 5 December 2016. Your support in this regard would be most appreciated. Three2Six Packing The next packing of foodstuffs will take place on Thursday 24 November at 12:00. There is also a Collect-a-Can drive for the month of November and we are requesting that parents only send tins of pilchards and baked beans. Anyone able to assist with packing food for the project is asked to contact Shereen on 082 498 9862 and Vandana on 083 761 2296. Telephones Please be aware that our telephone number is out of order so kindly email the section secretaries with any queries you may have. 1

HEALTH AND SAFETY UV Radiation The earth’s atmosphere blocks most of the suns UV radiation from penetrating the atmosphere. The small amount that gets through has both positive and serious negative effects. Positive:  UV light is absorbed by the body to produce vitamin D which is needed for the absorption of calcium to make strong bones, however, only 5 - 15 minutes of casual exposure to hands, face and arms, twice per week is needed.  Improves mood  It can be used for the treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo, but under the supervision of a doctor. 3

Negative: The negative effects accumulate over a lifetime and far outweigh the positive effects.  Sunburn - red painful burn to the skin that may cause blistering  Skin cancer - up to 90 percent of skin cancers are caused by UV radiation.  Immune system can be suppressed by over-exposure to UV light, decreasing the defense system against bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins.  Eye conditions- the eye is protected by eyebrows, eye lashes and the brow bone but strong ground reflection from water, sand and snow bounces the light into the eye.  Cancer of the eye  Cataracts - the lens is damaged and becomes cloudy leading to blindness.  Pterygiums - a common growth on the surface of the eye that is usually harmless unless it grows over the pupil. It can become inflamed and painful. Treatment:  Sunblock everyday and reapplied after swimming  Hats  Polarised sunglasses  Limited exposure to strong midday sun  Be aware that UV radiation is still strong on overcast days
