GENERAL: FOR ALL PARENTS Helpful not Hurtful Behaviours:

On Friday 1 July, the Grade 6s will present their lessons on Helpful not Hurtful Behaviour. The objective of peer education is that peers have to internalize what they are to teach which leads to changed behaviour. Also, the younger learners are very open to the lessons that are given by the Grade 6s, because they do things differently to their teachers and are closer in age and are seen as ‘school siblings.’ The net effect should be an increase in caring or helpful behaviour and a reduction in hurtful behaviour. Please will all Pre-Primary and Primary School parents support our initiative to create a more caring school by thinking about, discussing and implementing the following:  The first thing we need to remember is that we are all human with the same needs. We all need to be clothed, fed, housed and loved. We all need to feel safe and secure at home and at school.  We all want our school to be a safe, friendly and caring place where everyone is accepted for who he or she is.  We are all unique with different reactions to different situations. Sometimes we get angry, frustrated and hurt and then we engage in hurtful behaviour towards our family, friends or those around us. This we call our ‘red’ behaviour. It is behaviour that is hurtful and can be dangerous.  Sometimes we show ‘yellow’ behaviour. This occurs when we stand around and watch someone being hurt but we do not do anything about it because it is not happening to us. We sit on the fence, not taking responsibility for what is happening. We think that yellow behaviour is fine because we are not really doing anything wrong. However, by doing nothing, we are doing wrong because the hurtful situation just continues and sometimes our very silent presence makes the situation worse.  At other times, we can be ‘green’ in our behaviour. When we are green in our behaviour, we say we are sorry to the person being hurt and try to help him/her up after he/she has been hurt; we try to be kind. 1

At Sacred Heart College, we strive for behaviour that is true ‘blue’ behaviour. This is when we reach into a situation and stop it. It is when we say, “Stop right there! We do not allow this kind of behaviour to happen in our school.” It is when we do something very courageous even if it means that we may be in danger of being hurt ourselves. Blue behaviour is all about the spirit of Ubuntu. It is all about the ‘golden thread’ that runs through all religious traditions. It is all about dignity and respect for all ethnic groups and cultures. It is about the Gospel values of justice, honesty, peace, joy and compassion. It is about the moral fabric that needs to underpin all our human interactions. It is the behaviour expected for good citizenship. It is the core value system that we would like all our children at the College to emulate.

Mid-Term: Monday 4 July – Friday 8 July inclusive The school will be closed during the mid-term break, we will close at the normal time on Friday 1 July. i.e. 13:30 for Foundation Phase and 14:00 for Intermediate Phase. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a restful break.

PRIMARY SCHOOL Save the Date - Foundation Phase Gr. 2 & 3 Productions: 26 July – 4 August The Grade 2 and 3 learners are working on the Foundation Phase Production. A letter will be sent to all Grade 2 and 3 parents with details regarding times, dates, and information about costume requirements. Please look out for this on Thursday. Anyone able to offer help with costumes, please contact Pam Paton-Mills via the Primary School Office or the class rep. Condolences We are saddened to hear of the death of Chidera Iheson’s grandmother, and would like to express our sincere condolences to the family. Uniform: There are a number of children wearing the incorrect takkies. Please note that children may wear white takkies or black school shoes only. We appeal to all parents to make sure that your child adheres to this rule. Conformity is about being part of the whole and helps a child to integrate with the school community. Please ensure that your child cleans his/her takkies during mid-term. Wearing the school uniform with pride instils a sense of belonging to an institution that has a particular culture and value system. Your support in this regard would be most appreciated.
