PRE-PRIMARY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER DATE: 18 January 2017
Dear Pre-Primary and Primary School Parents
GENERAL: FOR ALL PARENTS Visiting During School Hours All visitors, including parents visiting the school during school hours, are to please report to the section office. This is for security reasons and no parents are permitted to go straight their child’s classroom. Please support us in this regard by ensuring that your au pair/driver is aware of this safety rule. Primary School Assembly Procedure s: 07:35 Our Primary School assembly procedure is the following: Monday: Whole-school assembly in the Intermediate Phase Quad Tuesday: Foundation Phase line up in quad and hymn practice in the Chapel Intermediate Phase assembly in the Intermediate Phase Quad Wednesday: Foundation Phase assembly in the Foundation Phase Quad Intermediate Phase assembly in the Intermediate Phase Quad Thursday: Intermediate Phase line up in quad and hymn practice in the Chapel Foundation Phase assembly in the Foundation Phase Quad Friday: Foundation Phase assembly in the Foundation Phase Quad Intermediate Phase assembly in the Intermediate Phase Quad Please make sure that your child is at school by 07:30 in time for the line-up at 07:35 as this is a vital part of our day. Vital information about the co-curricular activities is given at the end of the assembly input which is based on our monthly value. January’s theme is respect/new beginnings and we encourage parents to discuss how we show respect at home, within our family and our neighbourhood. There are many parents who like to share in the assemblies and join us in prayer, and this is something which is much appreciated. Those parents who join us are requested to stand to the side of the quad, and not to move into the quad or engage in conversations while assembly is being conducted, as this distracts the teacher giving the assembly and also affects the children’s ability to concentrate. 1
Grade R children start school at 08:00 and all other Pre-Primary School children need to be in class by 08:30. Late-coming and Absence from School Please remember that punctuality is important, both as a life skill, and in adherence to the school rules, so please support Mrs Marais in her duty which is to record the names of latecomers. It is a thankless task as parents sometimes vent their frustration at her, and she is really only fulfilling one of her duties. Persistent late-coming is dealt with by sending a SMS to parents, then a letter and finally a discussion on how to remedy the situation. If your child is late due to unforeseen circumstances, rest assured that these will be taken into consideration. We advise parents who encounter lots of traffic on their way to school, to leave fifteen minutes earlier in the mornings. Late-coming creates anxiety in children and is difficult for teachers to manage, especially if a lesson has already started. A letter is required for any absence from school during the school term. If a child is absent for three days or more, a doctor’s certificate must accompany the letter. All letters and certificates are kept on file in the section offices. Payment of your School Account Just a reminder to parents that if you pay your school account for 2017 in full by 31 January, you will be entitled to a 5% discount on the school fees amount. Aftercare The Primary School offers an Aftercare Programme, which operates daily from 13:00 – 17:30, catering for learners from Pre-Primary to Grade 6. Mr Zondo, the Aftercare Supervisor has asked that we highlight the following rules/processes pertaining to Aftercare: 1. Parents must advise the Aftercare Supervisor on 081 802 0412 or nathanielz@sacredheart.co.za if alternative arrangements have been made with regard to the collection of learners. Learners will not be allowed to leave the school unless these arrangements have been finalised with the Aftercare staff. 2. Under no circumstances may children in Aftercare be collected by their siblings from the High School. Only a responsible adult may collect a child. 3. All children not collected by 15:00 must attend Aftercare. Children are not allowed to wait for their parents/guardians or lift clubs in the quads, at the extra co-curricular venues, in the parking area or in the High School.
2
Aftercare is compulsory for all children who are on the premises, and who are not involved in an activity. Please do not instruct your child to disobey this rule, as it is there for your child’s safety and your convenience. If, for any reason, you arrive later than you had anticipated, you need only to proceed to Aftercare, and you should find your child playing safely and happily under supervision. Billing: Pre-Primary School from 14:00 - Monday to Friday Primary School from 15:00 - Monday to Thursday and from 14:00 on Fridays Parents are charged a late fee if they pick up their child after 17:30. Uber policy 1. If parents are using Uber to collect a Primary School child, the parent/guardian needs to send the request in writing by email to the section secretary before 15:00. 2. When the Uber is ordered, a picture of the driver, and details of the car including the registration number needs to be emailed to the section secretary before 15:00. 3. If a child is collected from Aftercare or Homework Class by an Uber driver, the parent/guardian must send a SMS including a picture of the driver, and details of the car including the registration number, to the Aftercare Supervisor on 081 802 0412. (This can be done by using a screen shot.) 4. Parents who use Uber and have children in both Primary and High School need to ensure that the Uber driver signs out the child at Aftercare. High School learners are not allowed to sign out Primary School learners from Aftercare. Safety Tips for using Uber 1. Verify the identity of the driver and their car before you get in. 2. Wait inside for your ride to come. 3. Keep in touch with friends or family. 4. Take note of the driver’s rating on the app.
