Welcome back Welcome back to the final term of the year. We hope that everyone is well rested after a long break away from school. This is a busy term with lots of activities including sports days, theatre trips, camp outs, and school camps. We look forward to exciting times! We encourage parents and guardians to continue to support your children and to be involved in their lives. These times can pass so quickly and the journey can easily be missed. We welcome Ms Colleen Kelly back to the school. She will be taking Ms Kither’s classes while she is on long leave. We also welcome Mrs Gill Workman, who is joining us this term as a part-time remedial teacher. We are grateful for her expertise in this area. Early retirement: Ms Kathy Dickson has indicated that she will take early retirement at the end of the year. We are grateful for the valuable contribution she has made to the College over the past eleven years. Through her efforts the Preschool was improved and set on the path to success. Kathy has made many friends at the College over the years and has always engaged with compassion and concern. We thank her for her wonderful work and wish her well in the next stage of her journey. Holiday activities We enjoyed two hikes in the holidays, to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Suikerbosrand. The trip to the Magaliesberg canopy tour was a real highlight. We encourage more parents to join their children in some of these activities in the future. Focus solutions for your child at home A number of parents complain that their children find it hard to focus at school and at home. Here are some suggestions: • Establish a daily homework routine. Children need to take a break between school and homework or may need frequent breaks between assignments. Figure out what works best for your child in order to help her avoid distractions and procrastination. • Help your child ‘set up’ in a distraction-free environment. Sometimes the best learning environment can actually be the kitchen table with music playing in the background. Experiment until you find the ideal learning spot. • Get him or her started. Sit down with your child and make sure s/he understands what is required for each assignment. • Supervise as needed. Children who find it difficult to focus may need significant adult supervision to keep on task. As your child gets older and matures, you can move away from constant supervision to frequent check-ins to make sure your child is on task. • Allow short breaks between assignments. Encourage your child to stretch or have a break between tasks. This can help make his workload seem more manageable. • Help break down large assignments. Divide big assignments into ‘bites’, each one with a clear goal. If your child feels like a task is manageable, she’ll be less likely to become distracted. https://www.additudemag.com/end-distractibility-improving-adhd-focus-at-home-and-school/ Sacred Heart’s Got Talent Our Talent Show takes place next Tuesday, 11 September, at 18:00 in the Hall. Foundation Phase news A warm welcome to the FP children. We wish them a happy 3rd term. • • •
Parent Evening Thursday 13 September: Kindly make an appointment to see the teacher. The schedule and times will be available at your child’s classroom. Learner Stationery: Please ensure that your child has all the stationery required to do the work in class. Responsibility and Independence: We would like to remind parents to allow their children to pack and carry their own school bags. o Trying to encourage more independence in children simply by helping them a little less teaches children to do more on their own. o Although it is often faster and easier to do certain things for your children, you may in fact, be doing them a disservice. If you do too much for your child and make everything “easy” for them, you may be creating a more dependent child. o When children can think and problem solve, it helps them to be more confident and independent.
