THANK YOU FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS
Dear Sacred Heart Community,
With great pride and immense gratitude, I share with you the 2023-2024 Annual Report for Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton (SHS), which provides a brief overview of the school’s financial health, institutional fundraising, and volunteer activity across the last fiscal year.
Each year, this report tells an important story about the incredible generosity and personal commitment given to our school by this community. From the outstanding participation in our annual fund campaign and auction, to the growing strength of our endowment, to the successful completion of our most recent capital campaign - Educating for a Lifetime - the consistent loyalty and support shown for Sacred Heart remains extraordinary and humbling. Without question, it is the reason our school traversed its 125th anniversary milestone year stronger than ever—in the caliber of our students and educators, and the quality of our educational experience.
We know there will always be more work to do at SHS, more improvement to be made, more aspirations to fulfill in our ongoing commitment to provide the best possible education for each of our students—to ensure they are well-prepared for lives of meaning and purpose. This remains our sacred obligation to the Religious of the Sacred Heart, who have entrusted us to preserve and strengthen the legacy of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat for generations to come.
But as we consider the long road ahead into our next 125 years, we do so with great confidence and great optimism—immensely grateful and assured because we know we travel this road together with you, every step of the way.

ENDOWMENT FROM FY10 THROUGH FY24
Each year the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees carefully reviews the spending policy and recommends an annual spending rate that is appropriate to meet these needs. This spending rate is applied to all gifts where the donor has not otherwise made a specific spending request. The remaining unspent monies are reinvested for continued growth as a hedge against inflation. The spending rate for 2023-2024 was four and one-half percent, based on a 12-quarter trailing average of the endowment’s market value.

By providing support for current-year operating expenses, the Annual Fund enables the school to maintain its high standards of education, uphold its mission, and offer a transformative learning experience that lasts a lifetime.
Through the generous support of parents, alumni, and the broader community, the Annual Fund ensures that Sacred Heart remains a beacon of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and holistic development for generations to come.

EDUCATING FOR A LIFETIME CAMPAIGN
This fall, Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton concluded its Educating for a Lifetime capital campaign, honoring the 125th anniversary of our founding. Exceeding a $35M fundraising goal, the success of this campaign was made possible through the commitment of hundreds of donors, volunteers, and other supporters who not only ardently believe in the mission of Sacred Heart, but also aspire to make this excellent school even stronger by investing in its educators.
As a result, the funds raised now directly support current and future SHS faculty and staff by providing new resources for salaries and benefits, building professional growth programming, and growing the school’s endowment. In turn, such vital and timely enhancements are ensuring that Sacred Heart continues to competitively attract and retain the best faculty, staff, and students.
Over the following pages, we gratefully recognize our many dedicated volunteers and donors who supported our campaign priorities through gifts of time, energy, and personal resources. We especially acknowledge and thank Devon Briger for being an outstanding campaign chair and tireless leader in this effort; our Board of Trustees, who encouraged us to pursue these initiatives; and each member of our Development Committee, who gave countless hours, support, and goodwill throughout these past two years.
Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton has come a long way since we first opened the doors in 1898. We are extremely proud of where the school stands today, and where it is positioned to go in the years ahead. We are grateful to each and every family for being part of this extraordinary moment in our history, and for always helping us move forward—safeguarding our past, joining together in the present, and planning for the future.
*Amounts include gifts and new pledges during the course of the two-year campaign. They do not include payments on previously reported pledges. Report subject to audit. Figures do not reflect depreciation.
EDUCATING FOR A LIFETIME CAMPAIGN GOALS
• SECURE TOP-MARKET COMPETITIVE SALARIES: Provide benchmarked, highly competitive compensation, with appropriate pay scales and bonuses, that can adjust transparently, with shifts in the market and with professional investment/ growth/ advancement.
• ENSURE COMPELLING BENEFITS THAT SUPPORT EMPLOYEE WELLNESS: Implement a generous and flexible array of personal benefits that meet current and anticipate future needs, ensuring the institution values each employee with full support and care for their well-being and livelihood.
• ESTABLISH A TALENT PIPELINE AND SYSTEM OF DEVELOPMENT: Dedicate resources to proactively identify, recruit, onboard, and train promising talent with incentives to commit to the school, allowing us to build a solid corps and reserve of exceptional, skilled educators.
• DELIVER AND SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND AGENCY: Offer multiple channels for professional learning, development, and leadership across all aspects of educators’ professional preparedness—discipline/content, evolving instructional and curricular trends, full competencies in child development, mental health, and differentiated learner needs, etc., which, ultimately, fuels and enhances student and classroom experiences.
WHAT DOES “EDUCATING FOR A LIFETIME” MEAN TO YOU?
In November 2023, the public launch of our campaign took place with an event that featured a stunning visual gallery with large-scale, black and white portraits of a few Sacred Heart educators, and numerous quotes given to us from our faculty and staff across campus in response to the query “What does ‘Educating for a Lifetime’ mean to you?” The exhibit was followed by a presentation, introduced by Board of Trustees Chair Marnie Marcin and delivered by Dr. Diana Neebe, Sacred Heart Prep assistant principal for instruction and faculty development. Dr. Neebe’s remarks explored the evolving landscape of education since the school’s founding, in particular the extraordinary shifts—for example, in technology, differentiated student learning needs, and the surge in artificial intelligence—which have required significant industry changes in instructional methods, means, preparation, and training. At right, please see a few samples from our gallery.
Please enjoy Dr. Neebe’s full presentation by clicking here.
Aligned with RSCJ teachings and Montessori philosophy, it means that as educators, we are to form and set a solid foundation for our students, one that is open, available, compassionate, and kind. We get to be part of that “lifetime” journey for them, and it feels…hopeful, important, inspiring.
- ANNA (MOORMAN) REITMAN | SHP ’03
PRESCHOOL - GRADE 8 | MONTESSORI PROGRAM SPECIALIST
Our mission is a spiritual mission. These students will be stepping up as captains of industry, entrepreneurs, humanitarians…people who will make important decisions in the world. So, to Educate for a Lifetime means if we send them out with an amazing education but no sense of purpose, and of spiritual purpose, then we aren’t doing our jobs.
- RIAZ ABDULLA SACRED HEART PREP | SCIENCE FACULTY
It means giving students the opportunity to discover their own talents and gifts and to speak their minds…Teaching them how important it is to get along with people, to respect differences and to accept others for who they are… To find true happiness in giving of yourself, of helping and loving others.

GRANDPARENT GIVING
Grandparents play a profound role in the life of a child, helping to shape their future. The support and contributions of grandparents to their families and communities create a legacy that not only impacts immediate needs but also lays the foundation for a stronger and more meaningful life.
Through their giving, grandparents impart values of compassion, empathy, and the importance of giving back, setting an example that inspires both present and future family members.
As we express our gratitude for their invaluable contributions, we acknowledge the enduring importance of legacy – the indelible mark they leave on the world, reminding us to carry their spirit of generosity forward.
We look forward to seeing you for Grandparents and Special Person’s Day in January 2025!
