Pope Francis Visits the United States

His Holiness attends the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia BY GIOVANNA GATTO

Parading around in his Jeep Wrangler “popemobile,” His Holiness Pope Francis took America by storm this past week. His United States visit began in Washington D.C., where he appropriately celebrated mass at The Catholic University of America. Pope Francis’ second stop was New York City. While in New York, he visited the United Nations General-Assembly and Central Park. At Madison Square Garden, he again took part in a celebration of the Eucharist. Wrapping up his trip, he spent the weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. for the World Meeting of Families. This function takes place every three years in a different location around the world. The World Meeting of Families’ mission is to bring cultures together to share in faith. Pilgrims from around the world gathered to participate in this historic event. Mary Christine Taylor, a sister of Saint Joseph’s Church from Mohawk, N.Y., said, “Although I am 84 years old this is one of the most joyous occasions of my life. To be at the World Meeting of Families with Pope

Francis, and not only the Pope, but all of the participants, was a real inspiration.” Over one million people attended this gathering, and among them was Sacred Heart University alumna Na Thi Nguyen, a sister of Lovers of the Holy Cross in Bridgeport, Conn. “I am not here to show my faith, but I am here to experience the faith of others. This is an experience I will take forth for the rest of my life,” Nguyen said. The faith-filled atmosphere inspired some in the crowd, like Doreen Firestone from Long Island, N.Y., to follow the example of Catholic teachings. “A middle-aged man from Mexico City asked us how much we paid for our tickets. We had an extra ticket and lanyard so we handed it to him,” Firestone said. “The husband gave it to his wife, [and] we then noticed they had five children. I told him you are my brother. Then searching for more tickets, we opened our bags and we had seven more. It was like loaves and the fishes with the tickets,” she said, referring to a popular parable in the gospel. The World Meeting of Families aims to spark a compassion for mankind that brings hope for a peaceful world. Joanie Katignani, from Joelton, Tenn. was sandwiched among the masses. Katignani,

reflecting on the crowds, said, “It was overwhelming in a good way.” Like many others, Katignani was left viewing the events of the weekend on one of 40 jumbo screens televising broadcasted coverage. Even though everyone did not have the ability to physically see the Pope, some people found value in just attending the gathering. “It was very emotional to see all the different cultures come together, [and] especially when we said the Our Father, seeing everyone holding hands,” said Katignani. During Pope Francis’ time in Philadelphia, he traveled to many places including Independence Hall and the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. Throughout these events he spoke regarding many topics, always returning to a main theme of the value of family. “Family is like a factory of hope. Families have difficulties. In families we quarrel. Sometimes, plates fly. Children cause headaches. I won’t speak of mother-in-laws,” Pope Francis said. “But in families there is always light. Never let the day end without making peace.”
