Drama Queens, Loners and Social Crusaders 15 types of commonly encountered college students Alex Deleon
1. The Kiss-Ass
Usually a freshman, this student tries to absorb everything the teacher says and immediately after class rushes to talk to the teacher for 15 extra minutes about what was just covered. Behaviors include: sporting the latest and greatest North Face backpack, functioning as a walking Office Depot and speedwalking to the next class (queue action music).
2. The Beer Bro
Beer Bro stays up all night drinking with his friends and suffers for it when he crawls into class. This person usually brags about how they got “SOOOO WASTED” last night. But come on, it really isn’t that cool, man. Traits include: droopy eyes, water bottle with Alka-Seltzer and sleeping through class.
3. The Buzzer
Everyone knows one and you might be one—don’t lie. You know, the one whose phone buzzes every two minutes, either with a text from the sweetheart or a Twitter mention. Behaviors include: looking down at their phone 75 percent of the time during class and smiling at, well, who knows what.
4. The Social Crusader
This character is involved in everything and tries to get you to join the club he’s trying to start up. He has good intentions (indulge him every now and again) but not everyone is cut out for everything. Traits include: confident, peppy and most likely wearing some club’s shirt.
5. The Typist
People don’t care if you bring your laptop to class for notes, but come on: Is it really necessary to slam down on the keyboard trying to type every word that comes out of the professor’s mouth? Behaviors include: eyes glued to the laptop screen, cracking fingers due to nonstop typing and taking that quick glance-awayfrom-the-screen-and-widen-the-eyes break.
6. The Genuinely Nice Guy
Not to sound harsh, but this person is a dying breed. Nowadays, almost every guy makes fun of something or someone. They don’t start conversations or help out. You’ll know when you meet this guy, there’s a big difference between a nice guy and total d-bag. Behaviors include: flashing a bright smile to nearly every lifeform in the classroom while disregarding cliques.
7. The Stoner
Need I say more? You can look at this person’s Twitter or Instagram and immediately conclude, “Yup, this person is high.” When they stumble into class you’ll think, “How are they even passing?” 12
College Issue 2014 /// sacurrent.com
Traits include: bloodshot eyes, inappropriate giggling and delayed reactions.
8. The Brooding Loner
Let’s imagine that Christian Slater’s character from the 1988 film Heathers [spoiler alert] survived that bomb blast and actually went to college. That’s the brooding loner. At first, you think he’s totally nice and he’ll offer you that I’d-like-to-get-know-you cigarette. But once he’s got your attention, he’s generally bad news. Just don’t get ahead of yourself, he’s not going to pull out a gun on the jocks or poison your best friend, hopefully. Behaviors include: distancing himself from the crowd and staring off into space, probably plotting how to sabotage his next victim.
9. The Sorority Sister
OK, next movie recap. What comes to mind when you think of Mean Girls in college? Sororities. Whether it’s when they disbanded and became nice girls or as if Cady never helped the band of Plastics see the error of their ways. It’s either/or, but you’ll be able to tell. Traits include: confidence and an un-daunting stride across the quad that screams “Sorority Greek.”
Dmitri Jackson
10. The Fraternity Bro
Ever heard of “brostep?” It’s basically dubstep times 10: ten times louder and 10 times more obnoxious. A typical “frat bro” likes to drink and break stuff while partying. Traits include: snapback, backwards cap, letterman jacket and khaki shorts.
11. The Sexually Curious
College means trying new things, including sexual experimentation. Finding out who you are and what you like is important, so it makes sense that many people are bi-curious or bisexual. The ultimate conclusion of sexuality usually comes after graduation. Behaviors include: doing the quick up-and-down of nearly every person (male or female) that passes by and having that locked-down stare at the hottie across the room.
12. TOA (The Over-Abbreviator)
It’s 2014, we’re fully aware of abbreviations in our digital social lives, but what is it when you incorporate abbreviations into actual speech? It’s weird. GDI SMH. Behaviors include: phone in hand at all times, sitting with the biggest group in class and being loud.
13. The Club Crawler
We have our 21-and-up crowd in college, and that might be a bit of a problem. First off, you can legally drink now, so that’s a downer on your grades. Also, you can get into clubs AND drink. It’s a mix for disaster if you’re going out every night. Every once in a while is OK, but you don’t want to OD on the club life. Behaviors include: walking into class with shades on, sporting a last-minute outfit and messy hair that recalls the previous night.
14. The Drama Queen
This may be distinctive to an art major or theater buff: you like show tunes. We get it. But you don’t have to sing Wicked lyrics from the top of your lungs. Traits include: Broadway-themed T-shirts and vocal cord warm-ups.
15. The Politician
It’s college and students more or less grasp the idea of politics and how it affects them. But this person is a know-it-all, which includes “knowing” how the rest of us are complete idiots who just “don’t get it.” Traits include: signature crisp, white button-down (tie optional) and Twitter updates about the latest news. sacurrent.com /// College Issue 2014

London Is so Last Season Take a walk on the wild side with a semester abroad in one of these amazing cities BRIANA DENHAM
After deciding to study abroad, choosing a destination is the biggest obstacle for college students. While London, Barcelona and Sydney are some of the most popular destinations, there are dozens of other cities that lend themselves to an enlightening summer, semester or year in a foreign land.
Madrid The capital of Spain, Madrid is the perfect combination of metropolitan lifestyle and Spanish tradition. Home to the royal family, the famous Prado and Museo Reina Sofía, the city isn’t lacking in artistic or historical merit and has something for everyone. Programs to consider: University of Texas–Austin (spring and fall); Southern Methodist University (summer); Baylor University (spring and fall); University of the Incarnate Word (spring and fall).
Prague Capital of the Czech Republic, the Old World city of Prague is known for its cobblestone streets and fairy-tale castles but it also boasts an intriguing nightlife scene and some of the finest brews in the world—need we say more? Programs to consider: University of Texas–Austin (Maymester, spring and fall); Texas State University (summer); Texas A&M University (summer); Texas Christian University (summer); Southern Methodist University (summer).
Florence An academic hot spot seemingly suspended in the Italian Renaissance, Florence delivers an intimate experience enhanced with endless nooks and crannies to explore. Students are bound to see spectacular landmarks (Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo’s David, the Ponte Vecchio, the list goes on) and will undoubtedly indulge in heavenly gelato. Programs to consider: Texas State University (summer); Texas A&M University (spring); Texas Christian University (fall, spring, summer); University of Texas–Austin (spring and fall).
Cape Town The adventure seeker will never be bored in South Africa’s second most populous city, with the outdoorsy draw of surfing, mountain biking, paragliding and more. Just be cautious in the water, South Africa’s coastline sees its fair share of Great White Sharks. Programs to consider: Texas A&M University (summer); University of Virginia (summer).
Buenos Aires This city in Argentina is called the “Paris of Latin America” for a reason. Beyond its café culture, open-air markets and picturesque gardens, the charming birthplace of the tango is home to a thriving fashion scene and world-class museums. Programs to consider: Texas State University (spring and fall); Texas A&M University (summer); Texas Christian University (summer); Southwestern University (fall, spring and summer); University of the Incarnate Word (spring and fall).
Hong Kong Foodies of the world will be hard pressed not to enjoy Hong Kong, with its cheap market food and adventurous selections ranging from jellyfish to brisket soup. Hong Kong is also a major business hub making it the perfect mix of the Eastern and Western worlds. Programs to consider: Texas A&M University (spring, fall and summer); University of Texas–Austin (spring, fall and summer); University of Texas–San Antonio (summer); Baylor University (spring and fall); University of the Incarnate Word (spring and fall).
Edinburgh There’s a magic to Edinburgh that sets it apart from many of Europe’s most visited cities. Although popular with fans of the Harry Potter series and its creator J.K. Rowling, who penned her first novel at a local café that overlooks majestic Edinburgh Castle, “Auld Reekie” (as it’s affectionately known) also served as the gritty inspiration for Irvine Welsh’s punk novel Trainspotting. Plus, it’s only a short drive to Glasgow, the Highlands and Loch Ness. Programs to consider: Texas State University (summer); Texas A&M University (summer); University of North Texas (summer); Southern Methodist University (summer); University of Texas–Austin (spring and fall).
Amman Students intent on learning Arabic should consider the capital of Jordan. Amman offers visitors trendy neighborhood districts, cafes and art galleries, while also giving American students a chance to learn about Middle Eastern and Islamic cultures. Programs to consider: University of North Texas (summer); Rice University (summer).
Berlin Germany’s capital has been described as a “modern city rebuilt on a tumultuous past” and some consider it the most exciting destination in all of Europe. Packed with attractions, museums and landmarks, Berlin offers unusual contrasts with its mix of green spaces, beer gardens, nightclubs and contemporary art galleries. Programs to consider: Texas A&M University (spring and summer); University of North Texas (summer); University of Texas–Austin (spring and fall); University of Texas–San Antonio (spring).
Toulouse This metropolis in Southern France may be a great fit for science and engineering majors as Toulouse’s aerospace industry and dedication to green energy are sure to provide real-time experience. Close to the Pyrenees mountains, and not far from the Mediterranean Sea, Toulouse offers an epic study abroad experience. Programs to consider: Texas A&M University (summer); University of Texas–Austin (spring, summer and fall).

Hangover Essentials
CONNOR CAVANAUGH
5 ways to prevent a hangover, 5 ways to zap one Preventing A hangover

Stick to lighter drinks. Darker beverages like red wine, rum or whiskey contain congeners, which are toxins formed during the fermentation and distilling of the alcohol.
Take vitamins (B vitamins are best). Your body uses up lots of vitamins while processing alcohol, and alcohol depletes B vitamins. Take a few B supplements before drinking to ease the strain on your body.
5
Eat breakfast: eggs, toast and banana. Eggs contain protein and B vitamins, toast can soak up any remaining alcohol in the stomach and bananas are rich in potassium. All of these will replenish what was lost during a rough night and help you feel better.
Drink water! Alcohol dehydrates and drinking water helps offset the effect.
Eat before drinking. When drinking on an empty stomach, your body will absorb alcohol faster, quickly intoxicating and dehydrating you.
3
Hangover Cures
Know your limits. The easiest way to avoid a hangover is to regulate your drinking and know when you’ve had enough.
College Issue 2014 /// sacurrent.com
Get fresh air. Oxygen increases the rate at which alcohol toxins are broken down in the body.
Have a glass of juice. After working hard to process the alcohol, your body will be low on blood sugar. Pick it back up with a glass or two of fruit juice.
4 4
1
3
Light exercise. Exercising boosts metabolism rates and helps bring more oxygen into cells, both of which speed up your body’s detox.
More water! Rehydrating your body is essential; drink water at every opportunity before, during and after a night of drinking.

10 Months of 240 Square Feet Maximize your cramped dorm room with these simple tips Before moving into your own apartment, most colleges make you live on campus, like canned sardines. Yes, we’re talking about the dreaded college dormitory. Living in a dorm may seem like a yearlong sentence in a box-like cell, but if you follow a few tips and use every millimeter of space, your experience shouldn’t be a living hell. The typical college dorm is about 12 feet by 20 feet—not quite the space we are all used to. And depending on your dorm-room assignments, you might be sharing this room with a complete stranger, which leads me to my first tip:
Plan ahead It is crucial that you try to find out who your roommate will be so you can plan on what to bring. I’m not necessarily saying track down your roommate by traveling to another city, but rather locate them on social media. Once you have made contact with your roommate, decide what bulky items each of you should bring— items could include a mini fridge, television, microwave and gaming consoles. Most colleges have layouts and dimensions of their dorms available online. Use them to plan for your dorm. “Definitely plan, at the very least, two months ahead of time for moving in because if you wait until the last minute, something 20

ANTHONY ESTOLANO
that is meant to be exciting can become stressful and frustrating,” Celeste Brown, a communications major at the University of Texas–San Antonio, said. Your space-saving options will be limited depending on your dorm. Essentially, you will either have a room with movable furniture or non-movable furniture. Plan as much as you can with your roommate before devoting a year to this cubic space. Remember, this place will serve as your bedroom, study and workspace, entertainment and recreation area, living room and, in some cases, a dining room. Consider using Pinterest to look for ideas when planning for your dorm.
Stash it, hide it After figuring out living-space basics, it is time to shop until you drop. Let’s face it, your parents don’t really want to spend any more money on you for college, given the fact that your tuition costs an arm and a leg. But don’t stress, there are many low-priced options when it comes to saving space and cash. Places like Walmart, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond are all great options when looking for space-savers. For students who have movable furniture, make good use of under-the-bed storage. Dorms with movable furniture usually also have adjustable beds. Plastic storage boxes are the

best bet for under-the-bed storage. Prices range from $30 to $40. You can also buy collapsible storage boxes for less than $8 each. “Utilize storage containers,” Brown said. “Target has some awesome ones that are thin and long, so they slide right under your bed. Also shoe racks that hang from your door are super beneficial.” Brown also mentioned three must-have items, which include a desk organizer, storage bins and furniture that can double as a storage unit. “You could use the desk organizer to hold everything from pens, to journals and sticky notes,” Brown said. “They also prevent clutter. The storage bins are great for everything from toiletries to clothes and books. Most can be hidden, but there are some that are decorative and meant to enhance the appearance of your room. Ottomans are a great example of furniture that doubles as a storage unit.” All dorms are usually equipped with dressers. Make use of these, but think twice about stuffing your clothes in every drawer. A great space-saving tip would be to separate a few drawers to stash dry food, school supplies and miscellaneous items. When storing clothing, try rolling it instead of folding and stacking to save space. According to rentaldecorating.com, loft beds are great spaceutilization tools that take advantage of vertical-room space that otherwise might be overlooked and underutilized.
The closet For the most part, people can live without a huge closet. But the thought of a small closet would kill some people. While
HANGING SHOE RACK
women may have more clothing than the average guy, they are smarter when it comes to saving space. According to Erica Edwards, an interior design major at Texas Tech University, a shoe rack is vital. “The closet is definitely the biggest problem for girls,” Edwards said. “You hear it all the time. But you don’t know until you get there that you should just take your spring clothes in the spring and switch out according to season. If you cannot do that, then you can vacuum seal with a Ziploc seal bag to save space.” Edwards said organization is the key to efficient storage and decor. “I did not have movable furniture so I had a lot of small containers that held a lot of things,” Edwards said. “The more you can fit in a small space, the better.” Edwards also mentioned driving around the city on bulk trash pick-up days to find furniture that can be restored with polish and paint. After all, you are on a college-student budget.
Leave it If it’s useless, don’t take it. The most cost-effective way to save space is to leave stuff at home. Yes, you need clothes, but don’t take your entire wardrobe, because in college you will find yourself wearing casual clothing, possibly emblazoned with your college logo or Greek letters. Or as Edwards mentioned earlier, consider taking seasonal items. Remember that using every inch of space appropriately should be a priority when living in a dorm. No throwing clothes and books on the most convenient surface, including the floor. Also, you will probably only be living there for one school year (10 months). sacurrent.com /// College Issue 2014

In April, President Barack Obama enlisted the help of famous men to help fight sexual assault against women. Steve Carell, Daniel Craig and Benicio Del Toro, to name a few, joined Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in an advertisement as part of the “1 is 2 Many” campaign. The men in the ads direct their words to other men and state, “If she doesn’t consent, or if she can’t consent, it’s rape. It’s assault. It’s a crime.” The campaign comes at a time when 37.4 percent of female rape victims were first raped between the ages of 18 and 24, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control. College campuses continue to be in the crosshairs for fighting assault as one in five women are sexually assaulted during college, the White House reports. Obama’s campaign, which encourages men to be part of the solution, is in tandem with the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault. The task force stated in April that “campus sexual assault is chronically underreported.” To combat this, the task force is providing schools with toolkits to survey the prevalence of sexual assault on campus. The task force is also considering legislation to mandate that schools utilize these toolkits. Schools are also part of reducing sexual assault and are required to meet specific requirements under Title IX. Under the law, schools must do the following: be proactive in ensuring that campuses are free of sexual discrimination, have established procedures for examining sexual assault complaints and taking action to help students who have been assaulted continue their education. Also under the law, schools cannot retaliate against assaulted students or discourage them from continuing their education. For more information on your Title IX rights, check out the Know Your IX organization at knowyourix.org. The final players in preventing sexual assault are students. The White House task force stresses the importance of bystander intervention. If you see something happening, intervene.

If you are carless in college, you’re probably spending a lot of time walking around in the hot sun, hustling to get to class on time and arriving uncomfortably hot and sweaty. Getting a bike would make travel faster, but bikes are expensive and a nuisance to lock up and leave outside. An easier and more affordable way to get to class quickly is to grab a longboard and roll to class, early and dry. Riding a longboard is a quick, easy way to swiftly cross campus. With a longboard, there is no need to lock it or leave it outside. Your board can be carried anywhere. Compared to bicycles, a quality longboard is relatively cheap, and maintenance costs vary between low and non-existent. An affordable, sturdy board that will last years can run you anywhere from $75 to $150, depending on brand, style and quality (you can easily spend more than $200 on top-of-the-line boards). Brands like Atom and Sector 9 sell boards for less than $100 that will give you years of quality riding. If your objective is getting to class on time rather than achieving top speed down a road, almost any reasonably priced board will do the job well. If you are after more of a thrill, there is a community of skaters in San Antonio ready to show you the best hills and routes to achieve top speed. San Antonio Longboarders (SLAB) is a group of more than 500 riders who arrange skate sessions almost daily on SLAB’s Facebook page. Words of advice to those who are new to skateboarding: practice in an empty parking lot before braving the sidewalks and roads full of students and traffic. Get the hang of making quick turns, keeping your balance and most importantly, braking and stopping. Soon you will be weaving through those poor, perspiring pedestrians, who will arrive to class much later and sweatier than you.

10 quick ways to make money in college Sell clothes Plato’s Closet is a great place to take your gently worn apparel in exchange for cold, hard cash. They accept clothes, shoes and purses, as long as they are without stains, rips or odors. The pay is determined by style, age and current inventory. Visit platoscloset. com or visit one of their four San Antonio area locations for more information; no appointment necessary.
Cash in coins Why not make some quick money by turning money that you already have into cash? Coinstar machines take pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that you drop in and exchange for bills. There’s a 10.9 percent service fee that is deducted from your total, but it’s a small price to pay once your funds are added up. Bring your coins to one of the 10 local Coinstar kiosks located inside H-E-B grocery stores.
Offer your hair and makeup services to your peers Throughout my college years, I’ve known plenty of people who made money by doing their friends’ and acquaintances’ hair and makeup. You wouldn’t be able to charge salon or boutique prices, and you may have to start off with people who know you and your skills pretty well, but once you begin charging and accepting donations, the money adds up.
Craigslist flyers jobs These are jobs where an employer is looking to hire someone to pass out flyers for them or their business. Handing out flyers is a good job for students because it can be done between classes, during down time or even in class if the professor allows it. An example of one of these listings reads, “Pass Out Flyers in Neighborhoods.” Further information will be given when you click on the listing.
Sell items A pawnshop is one of the quickest ways to sell your unused items of significant value because you simply walk in, present your item to sell or pawn and get cash if it’s accepted. Craigslist is also a quick way because your items are listed for locals to see, and if someone in your area wants to purchase it you meet up with them at a safe (and public) location and make the sale for cash.

Sell aluminum cans There are 10 recycling service locations in San Antonio where you can sell aluminum cans for cash. These places accept aluminum, copper, stainless steel, brass, lead and zinc in exchange for money. The current value of these metals will determine how much bounty each pays out.
Create a product to sell on Etsy Selling on Etsy.com could become a great investment if your product becomes a popular item. Etsy primarily sells handmade, creative and unique items so that customers receive a one-of-akind product. If you have a passion for crafting, create an Etsy shop and start selling.
Donate plasma Donors can be paid up to $60 per donation and can donate two times a week. Eligible candidates are 18 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good general health. In order to donate, you must present a document with your social security number on it and provide a valid ID (driver’s license, student or military) at one of San Antonio’s 12 donation locations.
Donate sperm Donors must be between the ages of 18 and 34, be at least 5 feet, 11 inches tall and maintain a healthy weight. Medical history will be screened and donors will be tested for various infectious diseases. The pay will depend on the donor and the facility; most pay around $50 per sample. Eligible donors may also have the option of a long-term contract that can pay up to a few hundred dollars a week for six months of weekly donations. Go to fertilityexpert.org to find local sperm banks.
Medical or behavioral research studies Research studies are conducted at University of Texas–San Antonio, University of Texas Health Science Center and other San Antonio institutions on topics ranging from social drinking to depression. Students can volunteer to participate in the studies they are eligible for by contacting the research facility, learning about the potential risks and side effects, and signing up. sacurrent.com /// College Issue 2014

Are We in This Together? The collegiate conundrum of relationship status Alex Deleon
A looming question hanging over your head when you start college is whether to stay with your high-school boyfriend or girlfriend or call it quits. Everyone’s situation is different: either you’re moving away, growing apart or trying to make the relationship work. Whatever the situation, it’s never easy. So here are some tips to consider when making that tough decision:
Think it out Before you do anything, take a moment to sit down and delve into the inner depths of YOU. You’re starting a new chapter in your life, which can be emotional. Whether you’re leaving or you don’t have time for anyone, it’s tempting to be nice and make someone feel better without prioritizing yourself. You need to ask yourself if you’re going to be OK with a monogamous relationship with someone you rarely see.

Orientation Visit your college without your significant other. This way, you’ll get a feel for what it’s like on a day-to-day basis. Plus, you’ll meet a few people, which is a great way to discover the types of students that you’ll be spending your first year with. When you go to orientation, it’s much easier to imagine college life instead of wondering about it from home. This will help you picture how (or if) you’re going to keep in touch with your sweetheart.
Don’t be a two-timer Now you’ve got your groove. Maybe you’re even crushing on the guy who works behind the coffee counter or the girl in your comp class. Be cautious. If you start developing crushes while you’re still with your BF/GF, that’s going to tempt you and you’ll be a jerk if you leave them in the dark. If you want to be with someone else, be honest and break up. No one likes a cheater.
Face-to-face The conversation is hard, but it must happen (and NOT via text message!). Talking with your sweetheart about staying together or breaking up when you plan for college isn’t easy. But tell the truth and don’t hide your feelings. And if you’re on the other side of that talk, be open-minded. Starting college is a big change and can be hard, so being upfront with your honey is important.

Play Hard, Study Harder How to succeed in the classroom and on the field SARAH PALLER
Student-athlete: There is a reason why student appears first. Being a student comes first, but college is also the time to discover your hobbies, passions and future career. This past year I was a first-year student at Trinity University where I also was a first-year softball player. The immense workload that I carried throughout the year was shocking, to say the least. While in season, a student-athlete’s schedule consists of practices six days a week, morning and evening workouts, film sessions and conditioning, as well as other challenges every first-year student encounters (social adjustment, career exploration, school work, etc.). Here are some helpful tips to the “fresh meat” about to be thrown into the college sports melting pot: 1. Learn how to say no A student-athlete’s schedule demands being a full-time student and a full-time athlete. Friends will beg you to spend time with them. Saying no allows you to get ahead versus stressing over your procrastination during a big game. This means that some Fridays and Saturdays have to be dedicated to studies and work instead of the stereotypical toga party. 2. Organization and time management These are good skills to have as a student, but as a studentathlete they must be your best qualities. You will have workouts, class, practices and games, not to mention missed tests and lectures due to away games. Buy a calendar and place it somewhere that it will be seen every day. College athletes have to be on top of their game on the field and in the classroom.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY ON HUMAN METABOLISM TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER
IF YOU ARE:
s "ETWEEN AND YEARS OLD s 7ITH OR 7ITHOUT $IABETES
9OU MAY QUALIFY FOR THIS STUDY THAT WILL EVALUATE HOW A PROBIOTIC A TYPE OF GOOD BACTERIA AFFECTS METABOLISM
IF YOU PARTICIPATE, 9/5 7),, 2%#%)6% your mind to know when to focus on school and when to focus on athletics. Use this time to break from the chaos of homework and enjoy the sport. Live and thrive in the moment where all worries disappear. 4. Break out of your comfort zone College will hold some of your wildest and funniest memories. Don’t make these years all about academics and athletics. Join a club and meet new people from different backgrounds and cultures. Living in the confines of school and sports can make someone go crazy, so live a little. Make some time for stress relief and be spontaneous. 5. Bond with your teammates Remember that the team is in it together. You can always turn to the other athletes for advice on the better teachers and which classes to take for a desired major (sometimes they can be more helpful than advisors). Take classes with your teammates. This will not only help you bond with them, but will also create an automatic study group. On long road trips, they can help you study for a major test or tackle difficult homework. Plus, you’ll have someone to sit with in class instead of awkwardly sitting by a stranger. 6. Cultivate good relationships with professors You have no idea how crucial this is to all college students, especially athletes. Introduce yourself on the first day of class and let them know what sport you play. Immediately send them your season schedule so they will know what days you will be gone. Go to their office hours! I repeat: Go to their office hours! If you ask for help, they will give it to you. Professors love helping students who are eager to excel and learn, so never stop asking for help. A study done by the NCAA showed that only three percent of college athletes go on to play their sport professionally. The other 97 percent of college athletes’ futures rely not on their athletic performance but their academic performance. Most college athletes need to consider that their collegiate athletic experience is a tool to get a degree, instead of the main focal point of college. There are many benefits of being a successful student-athlete. It will show future employers that you have dedication and focus, a great work ethic and the ability to learn and to work well with others toward a common goal. What you do on the field and in the classroom will reflect your performance in your career. So play hard, but study harder.

Speak Up!
Reece Ristau
Find your voice through speech and debate teams or student government Using your voice as a college student is important. Campuses in the 1960s and ’70s morphed from quiet institutions of study to battlefields for counterculture protests. Fast-forward 50 years: The art of protest has changed. Students have ditched megaphones for smart phones, using social media to spread messages. College students have long been at the forefront of speaking up and out about social issues, and finding your voice on campus can seem challenging in a sea of students. However, multiple outlets exist for ensuring your voice is heard, IRL. Speech and debate teams are organizations dedicated to helping young people hone public speaking abilities while simultaneously exposing social injustices, shedding light on influential changes in society and lending a voice to the silenced. Speech is broken into three categories: public address speeches, where students recite persuasive or informative speeches about current topics; interpretation events, where students choose literature, drama or film to act out, like mini one- or two-person plays; and limited preparation events, where students analyze news, politics and quotations with offthe-cuff speeches. As for debate, typically one encompassing topic per school year is delegated (e.g. the cost of higher education) and students build cases to debate other teams. Schools across Texas (and the entire nation) have teams. If your college doesn’t have a team, there are many student-led programs as well. Student government is another way to make your voice heard. Senators representing different majors propose and vote on bills to improve the quality of campus life. Student governments are responsible for maintaining constitutions and codes of conduct. This is a way to be a leader on campus and make changes that affect the entire school. Finally, most colleges have student political groups for all parties imaginable. Students with similar beliefs gather to discuss the political landscape and host events to spread their ideas. There are many outlets to let your voice be heard. Speak up! sacurrent.com /// College Issue 2014

Mark’s Outing A sporty theme shines through on 13 different specialty burgers, but the indulgent fare is far from health food, unless you mitigate the caloric damage a bit with the veggie or turkey patty options. All burgers come cooked to order with soft, buttery buns toasted lightly enough to hold the burger. 1624 E Commerce, (210) 299-8110, marksouting.com. ▲ Sweet Yams The first restaurant to offer vegan options to the East Side— and oh how sweet it is. Chef Gus and sous chef Shane bring organic southern food and juices. The Lil’ Veggie Boy is a twist on the classic po’boy with marinated grilled veggies inside a gluten-free baguette. Take a cue from its name and try the mini sweet potato pie. 218 N Cherry, (210) 229-9267.

La Fiesta Patio Cafe Tex-Mex doesn’t always have to be greasy or bad for you. Check out the vegetarian options and the whole-wheat tortillas— substitute tofu for animal protein and you’re golden. 1421 Pat Booker, (210) 658-5110, fiestapatiocafe.com. ▲ Lion & Rose Catch club soccer games on any of the big screens or grab a bite to eat between classes. Each night features different specials such as Castle Saturdays and Texas Sundays. Multiple locations, 8211 Agora Pkwy, (210) 547-3000, thelionandrose.com.
Ollu Gallo Pizzeria I dare you to try the Diablo pizza offered here; not only is it topped with jalapeños and habanero peppers, but also the eye-watering, flaming hot ghost pepper. The amiable atmosphere makes for a great place to enjoy some music and good pizza with friends after a long day at class, and vegan and gluten-free pizza options are also available. 164 Castroville , (210) 264-0077, gallopizzeria.com. Ray’s Drive-Inn The self-proclaimed “home of the original puffy taco,” Ray’s has been a San Antonio landmark since 1956. So why not bite into one of their dirt-cheap puffy tacos (filled with beef, beans, carne guisada, chicken, avocado, fajitas or fish), grab a freshly squeezed lemonade and revel in some of San Antonio’s history? Don’t forget to bring cash—this drive-in doesn’t accept plastic. 822 SW 19th, (210) 432-7171, raysdriveinn.net.

▲ El Siete Mares Located right across from campus, this marisquería is the real deal if you’re up for solid seafood. Chow down on some nachos de camarón or aguachiles and wash it down with giant piña coladas and margaritas. 3831 W Commerce, (210) 436-6056, elsietemaressa.com.
texas a&m/palo Alto Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant You’ll find the usual Mexican fare, and this is the spot for breakfast tacos before class. Bonus: Drink specials under $4 will get you nice and toasted after class. 1526 SW Military, (210) 922-3511, donpedro.net. Taqueria Mexico TM has the look of a place that has morphed over time into a sprawling space adorned with atmospheric murals and presided over by an actual hostess. Uptown trappings don’t disguise what is basically a mom ‘n’ pop menu, though: Lunch specials still include a $6.99 puffy taco plate that can hold its own with any of the city’s best. To get more in tune with the tony surroundings, consider a piled-high carne al pastor plate ($9.99) served with “wild” nopalitos. 7167 Somerset, (210) 598-8706, taqueriamexicoinctx.com. sacurrent.com /// College Issue 2014
