COREBIKE SHOW 2013 Highlights of our second year at the UK’s biggest cycle industry show With our second successful CoreBike behind us, we’d like to say how great it was to catch up with everyone that visited Whittlebury Hall this year. Saddleback’s additional floor space for 2013 allowed the presentation of many more brands over 2012, including newcomers Lazer helmets, Sportique and Raceware. Twelve of our suppliers in total attended,
providing in-depth technical knowledge across all brands. We were very pleased to secure the loan of Steve Peats ENVE equipped World Cup bike for display and the man himself on Tuesday… Thanks Steve! Also on show was Felt athlete John Degenkolb’s five times stage winning Vuelta bike. Save the date for Saddleback’s House Show: September 10/11/12th 2013.

LAZER HAS ARRIVED Over 90 years of pioneering helmet technology is here
Lazer, the world’s oldest operating helmet company, is built on over 90 years of pioneering helmet design and technology. Lazer has teamed up with some of the greatest champions from Axel Merckx, Virenque, Martinez to Boonen. Continuing today with LottoBelisol, Brian Lopes, Farnesse Vini and Pete Jacobs, who are important product testers. As the helmet category in the UK has historically been dominated by three US brands it was vitally important Saddleback partnered with a brand that had the technology, vision and World Tour association to break this stranglehold. With Lazer’s already established dominance in other English speaking markets, and Saddleback’s proven sales and marketing approach to brand building, we are confident Lazer will soon make up a good share of performance helmets sold in the UK.
World Champion rolling Enve Last year one of the longest serving downhill racers won the World Champs, his name? Greg Minnarr. As a member of the Santa Cruz Syndicate he was running Enve wheels, bars and seat post as all members of the Syndicate do. Peaty and Bryceland are the other members running Enve, with Peaty boasting that the same pair of race wheels were used for the whole season! As downhill racers the Syndicate are constantly pushing the boundaries of speed and durability, which has led them to use Enve products for many seasons and for many to come.
DEALER DEMO EXPERIENCE Recognising the importance of staff product training and experience, Saddleback are pleased to announce the launch of our dealer demo program. A dedicated Felt demo fleet is ready to roll, all packaged in to a custom trailer.

he OriginAl Z-series carbon frame set the standard for Felt’s distance bike range as it combined endurance-focused geometry and decent components at competitive prices. More recently though the frame was starting to show its age, lacking provision for electronic drivetrains and in need of losing a few grams to keep up with the advancing competition.

all new, all carbon forks with a steerer that tapers from 1.25inches to 1.5inches. The fork design features a ridged central spine on the legs that is continued into the oversized head tube. These ridges change the profile of the head tube into a more ovalised shape, which Felt claim bolsters the front-end stiffness. This leads into a squared profile, oversized down tube flowing into a huge BB30 compatible bottom bracket. Oversized chainstays with full carbon dropouts curve upwards in their final few inches flowing in one continuous piece into slender seatstays. While the bottom half of the frame is all about the business of stiffness and power transfer, the top sections are designed to offer comfort. The top tube starts

These Diluvios have a taller 16cm height than the original design for increased coverage, and a full-length reflective waterproof zip at the rear with a strengthened heel. The soft 3mm neoprene is stretchy and easy to put on, giving a very close fit, especially around the calf. Being neoprene they aren’t waterproof, but insulate very well, even on cold, wet days. The cleat and heel openings are reinforced to survive heavy use, and they are one of the best fitting overshoes on test.
Despite their low bulk, Santini’s Krios overshoes are made from very strong and flexible Plastotex fabric, conforming perfectly to shoes and allowing excellent ankle articulation. They are also wind and waterproof, with a snug fit at the calf, which kept the majority of water out, even when submerged on a flooded road. The zip is offset to the inside of the ankle for comfort, and although it doesn’t lock in place, the pull didn’t loosen. Reinforced toe and heel panels shrug off daily wear, and reflective flatlock seams give good visibility.

The Deluge overshoes are unusual in having no form of zip or Velcro fastening, just very supple and stretchy neoprene, but even using the pull tab we still needed a great deal of dexterity and patience to put them on. That said, with a different shoe and cleat combination it was a faster process. The neoprene isn’t waterproof, but the cosy fit and fabric thickness mean they insulate very well, even in freezing fog. Reinforced heel and cleat openings proved very durable, and there are reflective logos on the heel and toe.

wide and broad but quickly tapers down to a very slender joint with the equally slender seat tube. Unlike the previous generation Z-Series carbon frames, the new chassis features full internal cable routing. That keeps cables out of the elements and away from grime meaning it’ll keep running smoother for longer. It also adds compatibility to the latest electronic drivetrains, as where the cables enter and exit the frame, it’s a dual fit design to take either wider (mechanical) or narrower (electronic wiring) cables.
Shimano’s 105 takes care of the gearing and transmission with smooth and consistent results
The kiT
The 105 gearing works smoothly and efficiently. Felt have used an FSA Gossamer chainset in place of the expected 105 unit. That’s due to compatibility with the BB30 standard bottom bracket shell and Shimano’s reluctance to produce their chainsets in this ever more popular standard. Felt have taken a considered approach to gearing, specifying a 50/34 compact combined with a wide-ranged 11/32 cassette. That gives a decent gear for speed and a 34/32 bail-out gear that’ll get you up and over the most extreme climbs. Mavic provide their complete wheel system. It combines the great value Aksium wheelset with matching Aksion tyres. These may be marketed as a budget package but the French manufacturer’s quality is still present and they’ve been hassle free and smooth rolling, throughout the test. Stopping duties are handled by Shimano’s 105 brakeset. Quite often this is a place where manufacturers will try to save some cash but Felt’s choice of speccing great quality brakes (and importantly quality cartridge pads) means the Z5’s braking prowess is absolutely spot-on, consistent in feel and power whatever the weather
The Z5’s head tube now features a 1.125-inch to 1.5-inch tapered design adding stiffness up front
Wide range 11-32 cassette gives you a range of gears to conquer the very steepest climbs
conditions may throw at you. The frame’s smoothness is further enhanced by the quality 27.2cm diameter Felt UHC carbon seatpost. This is topped with a Pro Logo Kappa saddle. We got on really well with it, despite it being firm and narrow. The shallow and short Felt drop bars are very easy to live with and the compact dimensions make switching between hand holds quick and fuss free. The shorter reach makes for a relaxed on-the-
“The Z5 still has impressive handling traits, the front end reacts quickly and the beefed up head tube never exerts any drama” hoods-position that we were more than happy to spend hour after hour in.
The ride
The ride is absolutely defined by a beautiful smoothness, that’s impressive seeing as they haven’t resorted to fitting a 25c tyre, relying on Mavic’s standard 23c Aksion’s which come as part of the Aksium wheelset package. We’d love to try the Z5 with a bigger volume tyre as we’d expect it to become a cobble-busting
blaster perfect for the classics. The ride position is quite upright and, though the geometry of 72.5° head angle and 72.5° seat angle combined with a 200mm head tube and 575mm effective top tube length isn’t particularly relaxed, we quickly dropped the stem down as it comes with over an inch of spacers below. We’d still like to drop it further but a cone-shaped headset bearing top limits slamming it down any further. We recommend changing this
cone spacer as soon as you can, especially if you’d like to use the Z5 for racing duties as well. Despite the slightly elevated position, the Z5 still has impressive handling traits. The front end reacts quickly without getting nervy and the head tube never exerts any drama. The long 102.5cm wheelbase adds to the stability but it does dull the edges a little when you’re snapping through a pack or railing through a section of S-bends.
