It’s that time of year again, the Saddleback Dealer Show is only a month away! Every year at Saddleback we take three days out in September to introduce the exciting new product range for the upcoming year. All of our brands will be on display for you to salivate over. Seminars and product support from visiting brand members, means that you’d be crazy to miss a fun and informative show with all of us here at Saddleback. NICK COX

OFFICE IN NUMBERS This month we take a look at the 2014 Tour De France.

110

While 2013 marks the 100th running of the Tour, the race is actually 110 years old. The race wasn’t run during the two World Wars.

41.5

The 2005 Tour had the fastest average speed at 41.5 km per hour, which is nearly double the slowest year, which was 1919 at 24.1 km per hour.

3

Typically, the Tour is made up of 21 stages. Only three riders – Eddy Merckx, Charles Pélissier, and Freddy Maertens have won eight stages during a single Tour.

34

Eddy Merckx of Belgium has won the most Tour stages at 34.

With the Saddleback Dealer Show back again, make sure you come along and try out the new 2015 Felt bike range. One of the favourite parts of our Dealer Show is the demo rides. Every year we take out a group of dealers to experience the new range of Felt bicycles. We firmly believe that just looking at new products isn’t enough, we want them to be ridden and to listen to any feedback. The Demo Ride is the perfect way for this to happen. This year due to the location of the Show you will be treated to the beautifully scenic roads of the Cotswolds. Be sure to sign up for a Demo Ride when registering your attendance to the Dealer House Show. Let’s face it any excuse to get out and ride is a winner! NICK COX

During the early years of the Tour de France, gearing systems were banned. Cyclist would grind up steep hills on a single speed .

Santa Cruz Syndicate’s Josh Bryceland is crowned the 2014 UK National Downhill Champion rolling on Enve’s.

STAGESRICHIERUDEANDMORE We bumped into Richie Rude at Fort William, nice guy. Many may balk at junior downhill world champ, Richie Rude’s decision to race on the EWS circuit rather than World Cup DH for 2014, but the folks over at Stages Cycling fully support him.

Innerleithen played host to this years UK National Downhill Championships, which saw Josh Bryceland put 3.5 seconds in his closest contender to take the win. After Bryceland’s success at Leogang, the most recent round of the World Cup, it was no surprise to see him challenging and winning against a star studded pack of the best UK racers. Riding, what has been the talk of the internet, his prototype 650B Santa Cruz V-10 rolling on the Enve 90/10 650B wheelset, no one even got close to him on race day. We’re expecting more great things from Josh with the next round of the World Cup at Mont Sainte Anne, Canada - 3rd - 4th August. NICK COX

“He’s striking while the iron is hot, and we can’t blame him for that,” said Matt Pacocha, Stages marketing manager. “Plus, the consensus is that enduro is basically world cup downhill on little bikes with a bit more pedaling mixed in, so we imagine that Richie is honing skills that are valuable on any course that points down.” Besides Rude’s EWS endeavours, Stages Cycling are enjoying amazing success on the EWS circuit this year. The whole of the Trek World Racing enduro squad is on the meters, including, among others, Anne Caroline Chausson, and of course Rude’s Yeti Factory teammate, Jared Graves is in the hunt for the 2014 title. For those refusing to jump on the enduro bandwagon, keep in mind reigning downhill world champ Greg Minnaar is riding Stages too. Stages Power meter is really for every rider. MATT PACOCHA

As the next generation of cyclists demand more of everything, Smith is excited to introduce the most comprehensive road helmet on the market: the Overtake. Ultra-lightweight at 250g, the Overtake offers best-inclass protection and maximum ventilation through its AEROCORE™ construction featuring Koroyd®. Unlike traditional helmet designs, the use of Koroyd provides a significantly increased venting surface for better managed, highly focused airflow. Its use also helps reduce the profile of the helmet, providing unique aerodynamic benefits. Additional features include 21 optimized vents for balanced aerodynamic performance without compromising ventilation, Smith’s VaporFit™ dialoperated 360 adjustable fit system, and ultimate sunglass integration. Select colourways of the Overtake also feature (MIPS®) multi-directional impact protection system liners to reduce the rotational forces to the brain during impacts. Available from Autumn. TOP FIVE

CHARLES COLEMAN SHARES WITH US THE TOP FIVE BIKES HE’S OWNED. 1. CANNONDALE CAAD10 Superlight aluminium bike, best handling descender where you can almost make the tyres squeal in the corners.

Not many bike manufacturers are able to offer Shimano 11 speed 105 groupsets on 2015 bikes - Felt can.

2. SANTA CRUZ BLUR XC Really enjoyed zipping through singletrack trails around Bristol on this.

With Shimano introducing the new 11spd Shimano 105 groupset, bikes equipped with it are fast becoming the hot bike to have. Unfortunately, Shimano has been overwhelmed with orders and is facing some delays. The industry is currently travelling to Japan, begging for orders to be confirmed and shipped. The FELT FED group placed a very very early order for this new groupset, and we are pleased to confirm that Felt 2015 bicycles have the new groupset and are on their way to Europe. It appears that Felt have become one of the few early manufacturers to offer 11 speed 105 to the UK market. This means the following bikes are going to hot property: AR5, F5, F75, Z5, Z75, F5X, F65X. NICK COX

3. FELT F1 Really stiff and light. Fond memories of powering it up ‘The Stang’ to claim a National Hill Climb Champs top 10 finish.

Z75

4. COVE HANDJOB My first ‘proper’ mountain bike. Nice short geometry, really zippy through the woods.

AR5

5. YETI ASR5 My favourite mountain bike. XC speed, AM performance. Point it at a rock garden and it’ll just fly through the middle!

ENVE DH BARS The Enve DH bars are the first carbon bars I’ve trusted on my DH bike after using alloy ones for so long. They come stock at 800mm but as I’m only 5’3” I cut them down to 760. When I first fitted them, instantly the front end felt stiffer. This allowed me to feel what the bike is doing a lot better over rough terrain, yet the carbon dampens some of the stutter-bumps, helping to reduce fatigue and arm pump. They are also the lightest bars I’ve used on a DH bike, making the front end of the bike feel a bit more agile. The finish is holding up well, they’ve taken a lot of crashes and uplifts and still look classy!

OFFICE QUOTE OF THE MONTH

MEET THE SADDLEBACK TEAM

“The grading system of 1 to 4 that refers to the difficulty of the climbs in the Tour De France relates to the gear needed to travel up them in a Citreon car, fact.”

With the Tour De France in town, what better opportunity to treat some of our dealers than with courtside seats. To celebrate ten years of Saddleback and that the Tour was starting in the UK, we managed to secure some of the best seats in the house. Situated on the Mall in London next to the finish line a few of us were treated to a catered room with a balcony view of the race. With the drinks flowing and everyone well fed the tour entered London and we were there to see it go by and finish. What better way to spend a Monday than watching the Tour, not on a TV but in real life! NICK COX

ENVE DH WHEELSET

ENVE AEROBAR Fast just got faster courtesy of Enve Developed in the wind tunnel and optimized for the road, the Smart ENVE System Aero Road Bar is built to deliver industry leading drag reduction, comfort, and handling precision. The SES Aero Road Bar’s minimal frontal area and multiple hand positions are perfect for the rider looking to optimize their aero efficiency and position on the bike. Ride feel and handling are tuned to meet the high performance demands of road and ITU triathlon racing.

For the last few months I have been running the Enve DH rims built onto Chris King hubs on my DH bike. Having ridden a few different combinations of aluminium rims and hubs before, I was blown away by how stiff the Enve rims are. The stiff carbon rims dig into soft off camber tracks and give you more grip and control, yet on hardpack fast tracks like Fort William they are not too harsh. They have stood up to the abuse I’ve thrown at them on the national DH tracks yet the rims are still lighter than those on my hardtail! I’m really impressed by the quality of the Chris king hubs, I’ve not had to touch them other than tightening the bearing preload after they bedded in. The engagement is really positive which makes a difference when putting half-cranks in down tight DH tracks!
