It’s Not Easy Being Green
Vivian Timian, General Manager lthough it seems as though new projects move slowly in SaddleBrooke, the Community has made significant strides over the past seven years to improve efficiencies and save on water, utilities, grass & fertilizer. Looking back on the different initiatives:
A
Golf Course: 1) Upgrades to the pumping stations in 2011 and 2012 to reduce electrical and water consumption. 2) Discontinue over-seeding the greens (2011) on all 27 holes, this has lowered seed, water and fertilizer costs. 3) Upgrades to the irrigation system in 2015 and 2017. Significantly lowering the water and electrical usage. Common Landscape Areas: 1) Removal of grass areas around the Clubhouse, Fitness and Tennis Centers in 2010. Lower maintenance and water costs. 2) Upgrades to the irrigation system in 2012 provided lower electrical and water costs. Common Area Buildings: 1) Upgrade lighting (2010) in the Clubhouse to LED, higher efficiency equals lower electrical costs. 2) Upgrade to energy efficient windows and HVAC units (2010) in the Fitness and Activity Centers. 3) Upgrade lighting (2011) in Activity Center, reducing electrical costs. 4) Changes to the pool heating system—additives to keep temperature stable during the cold winter months (2012), reducing natural gas costs. 5) Installed LED lighting (2013) in the Clubhouse parking areas to reduce electrical costs. 6) Upgrade to a new chiller (2014), and VFD installed on cooling tower (2015), both having significant impact to lower electrical consumption.
Food and Beverage: 1) A new initiative (2017) to remove the standard styrofoam to-go cups with a biodegradable foam cup. So what has been the total impact over the past years—we are just over $50,000 in savings over the seven year period. Most of these projects were completed with funding from the Replacement Reserve Budget. New electrical components have a higher energy efficiency, which reduces the carbon footprint. The projects mentioned above have come at a cost to the Community--it’s not easy being green, but for the future it is desirable.

HOMEOWNERS' ASSOCIATION 64500 E. SaddleBrooke Blvd
Daily Notes It's a beautiful day in SaddleBrooke! This month, I only have one note to share unlike my previous information updates. Our friend, my friend, colleague and Vice President of HOA1; Richard (Dick) Barr passed away May 27th from complications due to surgery. This was totally unexpected, as it was a surgery most people would consider serious but routine. He developed a blood clot and died without leaving the hospital. Dick and Linda became full time residents in 2009. He had been an active member of the Community Church at SaddleBrooke, serving on its board for three years. After moving to SaddleBrooke, he became active in committees and was most recently elected to the Board of Directors for a three year term. He will be greatly missed by the Board and the hundreds of people who went to his memorial service. The Association has in its Bylaws (Article 3), rules relating to the appointment of a Board member when there is a vacancy. The Board has met and appointed Paul Fuchs to serve until December 31, 2017. He will also assume Dick's responsibilities as Association V.P. and Liaison to the Properties and Roads Committee. Paul most recently was President of the HOA and acting General Manager for a short period of time. Until next month . . . . Jim (President Board of Directors)

SaddleBrooke One Monsoon Time in SaddleBrooke Ron Tuxbury, Patrol Manager
W
e look forward to the Monsoons every year because they bring much needed rain and reduce our high summer temperatures. The downside of the Monsoons is that they also bring lightning strikes and rain in so much volume that it overwhelms our drainage systems. Remember, lightning strikes can cause power surges and power outages so be sure that all of your electronic equipment is protected with surge protectors or battery backup units.
T
his is an excellent time to remind motorists of a few monsoon driving safety tips: • Give yourselves greater braking distances between vehicles during the rain. • Prior to the start of the Monsoon season, be sure that your windshield wipers are in good condition. • Never attempt to cross flooded roadways. • Always turn on your headlights when it rains.
O
ur roads are dry most of the year and most become coated with substances that when mixed with water, cause the roads to be very slick and increase the possibility that your vehicle will aquaplane when you try to brake. Because of our many sunny days and high temperatures, our windshield wipers should be changed annually. "Do not enter when flooded" means what it says. Many of our roads cross washes that flood during the rainy season. Every year drivers are stranded, and in some cases their cars are washed away when they attempt to cross flooded roads.
Safety Tip The weeks just prior to the start of the Monsoon season are usually the time of our highest forest fire danger. Please be very careful with any open flames and never leave a fire or barbeque unsupervised. For those of you who are smokers, please be sure all cigarette butts are completely out before you dispose of them. Never throw a lighted cigarette or cigar out of a vehicle or into the grass or rough on the golf course.

Mailbox Project Vivian Timian, General Manager
The ALC took on a mailbox refurbishment project in November of 2017, urging residents to paint their mailboxes to help the Community look its best. The results were that more than 90% of the residents completed this task, however, we still have 189 boxes that need to be brought into compliance. The Board of Directors will be voting on a contract with a local paint vendor to complete this job. The Association will charge back the residents a $25.00 fee to cover the costs of painting. Management will present this proposal at the July 27th Board of Directors meeting. If this is approved, letters to the homeowners will be sent on July 28th, identifying that their mailboxes need to be painted in ‘order to promote uniformity and harmony of appearance’, as well as the $25.00 maintenance charge. Please note that this process is supported through the CC&R’s (Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions) for the Community. For those residents that have been maintaining their mailboxes, we thank you for your cooperation.

A very popular author has published a new book. It is titled Camino Island. He often writes about lawyers, as he was once one himself. Do you know who this author is? John Grisham is his name; and this story is about old books and the black market of same. Stone Barrington is back in a new Stuart Woods mystery. Indecent Exposure is the title and Stone is suddenly thrust into the limelight. It must be hard to be rich and mighty. Lisa Wingate has written a novel that is based on a true happening that took place in Memphis, TN in the 1930s. In this story (Before We Were Yours), the father has to leave his children alone while he rushes his wife to the hospital. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss is in charge of her four younger siblings. However, strangers arrive and take the children from their shanty boat to an orphanage. Rill will have to fight to keep the children together. Flash forward to the present – a successful federal prosecutor returns home to help her father when a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions about her family. Might there be some connection between then and now? Janet Evanovich is back with another of her crazy mysteries. This one is Dangerous Minds and the main characters are Emerson Knight, Riley Moon and Emerson’s cousin, Vernon. You’ll have fun with this one. Is anyone ready for international intrigue with the CIA? Try Brad Thor’s Use of Force. A body washes ashore after a storm in the Mediterranean; and it is that of a high value terrorism suspect who just happened to disappear three years before. Sound interesting? There is a new author for Tom Clancy books. This one is Mike Maden and the book is Point of Contact. This is a Jack Ryan, Jr. novel and if you have been following this series you will want to pick this one up. The Bill O’Reilly series Legends and Lies continues with The Civil War. It is written by David Fisher and should be as popular as all the others. Look in the nonfiction section of our 7-Day cabinet. We enjoy all of you who visit our library. There are volunteers to help you from 9-4 Monday thru Friday and 9-12 on Saturdays. If you are new to SaddleBrooke and have not checked out a book or audio-book at either SaddleBrooke or DesertView library please come in and one of us will get you set up in our computer system. It only takes a couple of minutes. We look forward to seeing you if you are new or a frequent patron.
