GOLD AND GLITTER The importance of warm metals seen in previous seasons continues with the colour palette shifting towards the yellow of gold and brass. Golden accessories celebrate restrained glamour that lasts well beyond the holidays. At Bloomingville the ‘Pernille’ pendant lamp in plated metal adds sparkle on its own or in a cluster. Bitten London’s ‘Pineapple Gold Rush’ cushion in thick sparkle woven velvet reveals the trend’s fun side. Don’t miss the ‘Ndefu Ya Shaba’ hand-blown cocktail glasses with removable hammered brass cuffs created by artisans in Kenya and designer Gary Birk’s ‘Key Handle Mug’ decorated in Stoke on Trent with real Gold. LAYERED Sheepskins and chunky woollen knits invite you to create a snuggle-worthy home. But the well-layered interior does not stop there – a fresh take on pattern encourages laid back mixing of colours, textures and materials that add sumptuous depth to a decorative scheme. Look out for Bronte’s lambswool ‘Geometric’ throw by Abraham Moon & Sons in Aqua or Clover and Paulette Rollo’s basket weave throw in Indigo. For an of the moment touch don’t miss Bloomingville’s lambskin in wine. Other must-have accessories include Margo Selby’s patterned ‘Bindi’ cotton blend rectangular cushion and Otago Designs ‘Kikapu’ platters in indigo and dusty pink woven from sustainably harvested Lutindzi grass and reeds.

MODERN CRAFT The emergence of beautiful objects which mix technology and a refined point of view with an element of the handmade or natural materials underscores the importance of craftsmanship in the digital age. Authentic’s ‘Handle’ pendant lamp by Northumbria University graduate Josie Morris combines anodised aluminium with the warmth of wood. Ray Poulston’s ‘Marseille’ walnut veneer with painted hardwood console table designed for Pavillon Rattan is drawn and made by hand while speaking the language of 20th century design. At young brand Makers & Merchants the new hand crafted terracotta ‘Bates Tall Jug’ with a dipped white glaze and the ‘Nuno Tapas Plates’ hand painted serve-ware are inspired by

Materials like concrete, unfinished wood, steel, iron and glass are strong this season. A selection of Paulowina wood stools and bowls paired with black, warm rose and brass iron boxes creates a dramatic effect at A.U. Maison. Whitbread Wilkinson’s rustic wine glasses are handmade, each featuring unique variations and available in 18 colours including our favourites ‘cobalt’ and ‘frost’. Louisa Wattman’s soft concrete, badger hair and maple wood Shaving cup and brush for Iris Hantvert and Global’s razor sharp ‘G-76 Hachoir’ (mincing knife) in stainless steel combine the trends’ practical and stylish sides. WHIMSY Across the international design shows brands are embracing a liberating sense of fantasy. Echoing fashion there are references to fables, fairy tales and whimsical touches. In the spirit of fun don’t miss We Love Cushions’ digitally printed ‘Fido Barko’. At Alessi the iconic ‘Anna G’ resin and chrome-plated corkscrew by Alessandro Mendini feels very right now in light blue. Louise Rushford’s new ‘Sweetie Pie’ Silk Crepe Satin features vertical candy coloured florals interspersed with the designer’s magical take on jet black birds. RETRO Retro is back flavoured by strong influences from the 60’s without forgetting elements from other favourite decades of the recent past. Think bold colours and punchy patterns that are best paired with a hint of wood to keep things refined. At Ella Doran the East Londonbased designer’s digitally printed ‘Sevens’ wallpaper gives a vintage record motif an on-trend spin. The ‘Atomic Soda’ fine bone china collection by Mr and Mrs Clynk is brought to life through playful pattern. Hard to miss, is Commichef’s cast aluminium round mini cocotte in orange, a colour that also emboldens interiors from kitchens to home offices, as spotted at Block with their useful perforated fibreboard pegboard. Designer Marie Jangneus-Davis serves up graphic style with her ‘Spots’ birch wood tray sourced from sustainable

GARDEN CENTRES DIVERSIFY BY KATE WATSON-SMYTH INTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANT

1

The 21st century garden centre is so much more than a place to buy a couple of plants and a bag of compost. While some have built cafes and gift shops on their premises, the really modern ones have turned themselves into lifestyle stores stocking high-end furniture and homewares and ensuring their food is of restaurant quality. Home Autumn is the perfect venue to find products that will stand out from the run of the mill gifts and garden ornaments and bring those increasingly discerning customers through the doors. This is the first time the show has run in September which means you can buy products from exhibitors including Garden Trading, Terrace & Garden, Moores Home & Garden and Pimlico, and have them in store for the Spring. As the long winter nights draw to a close and thoughts turn once again to the garden, this is the perfect time to introduce new stock. Matthew Appleby, of Horticulture Week, says garden centres have faced stiff competition from DIY stores and supermarkets and have had to “weatherproof their sales”. “Plant sales are very seasonal and

10

HOME OLYMPIA LONDON

used to be dead in winter which is why some garden centres started opening Christmas shops which then branched out into gifts. “Some of them now run concessions for clothing and homewares which helps to keep the business running all year round.” Sales figures from June 2014 revealed that sales of gifts were up six per cent year on year and a further six per cent in June alone, he adds, while plant sales now account for less than a quarter of all sales. “Furniture and barbecue sales are also up by a third so far this year.” So it makes sense to diversify and find homewares, kitchen accessories and other products that will bring in punters all year round. There are two outstanding examples of garden centres which have done this, both of which are described by Appleby as “the poshest garden centres in the country”.

Petersham Nurseries first hired Skye Gyngell, a Michelin-starred chef for its kitchen and now sells antiques, Astier linen and other homewares “as seen in Vogue”. Burford, whose staff say the centre is “like a department store”, has also diversified to great success selling everything from sofas and indoor furniture to tableware and rugs. It has around a million visitors a year, from the local allotment owner to the current Prime Minster whose constituency home is nearby. Michelle Follet Holt, the marketing manager of Burford, describes it as a lifestyle store rather than a garden centre as they offer “everything for stylish Cotswold living. “We treat inside and outside with equal care and focus so plants and garden-related products are about 50 per cent of the total now. “Nigel Johnson, who runs Burford with his wife, Louise, have really grown the business by listening to their customers and responding to their needs and wants. With creative backgrounds, they also both understood that style and

quality would make their business stand out from the crowd and they stick with this.” And it’s not just in the South either. Bents, in Glazebury, Cheshire, calls itself a Garden & Home store and is also clearly aiming for the John Lewis clientele. Stock includes furniture, cushions and candles and clothing brands such as Joules for the yummy mummy set. Garden Trading has been supplying both garden and homeware accessories to such establishments for years. Jon Holloway, the company’s founder, said all garden centres had had to react to the changing way people shop. “Garden centres have had to become more of a destination,” he said. “We work closely with them to find the right products for their customers. One area where we are seeing particular growth is lighting. Our St Ives range of galvanised lighting is extremely popular. “As garden centres diversify, the range of Garden Trading products they buy broadens, suggesting that they are reacting to customer demand for stylish products for both indoors and outdoors.”
