ANNUAL

AACEM/AAAEM RETREAT — Miami, FL — March 19-22, 2017

Welcome to Miami! Dear Chairs, Administrators and EM Leaders, The theme for this year’s retreat is “Innovation in Healthcare”. Innovation is the ability to continually see things through fresh eyes — however familiar they become. It is the ability to apply a different perspective to something you have done a hundred times. It is the ability to challenge your hard-won assumptions and to believe you may be wrong, however right you feel. Innovation will help all of us to prepare for a revolution in health care and education using technology. We, as emergency medicine leaders, are in a unique position to innovate the way in which we deliver care, including access, patient experience, quality, and efficiency. We work in highly accessible, realtime learning environments; we perform cutting edge research; we are able to facilitate rapid adoption of incremental and disruptive solutions; and we can produce novel therapies, devices, diagnostics, analytics, and IT solutions in our clinical and academic settings. One way to achieve success is to partner with industry to develop novel solutions to challenges that are important to our core missions. These partnerships will help to increase the pace of innovation by working collaboratively to create meaningful solutions to improve patient care through digital health. We seek to support a generation of entrepreneurs and health practitioners who will seek out industry partnerships to address specific needs. We are not alone in our mission: “The NIH looks forward to working with our partners in industry and academia to tackle an urgent need that is beyond the scope of any one organization or sector.” The annual retreat is an opportunity to share ideas, experiences, and to help each other challenge the way we think and act. We will be hearing from our colleagues about innovation in research and scholarship, education, entrepreneurship, clinical care, and finance. A tremendous gratitude to the retreat committee for their hard work in making this year’s retreat a success. Welcome to Miami!

Welcome to Miami! Dear Chairs, Administrators and EM Leaders; Welcome to Miami! The name “Miami” means “Big Water” in the language of the Calusa Indians. As president of AAAEM, I would like to welcome you to the 9th Annual AACEM/ AAAEM Retreat. As administrators we are constantly challenged by change; it is for this reason that we chose “Innovation” as our theme. We’ve lined up external and internal speakers who are very well versed on the subject and who will share with us their innovative topics. The two plus days are organized on four general topics: • Innovation in Clinical Care and Finance • Innovation in Education • Innovation in Research and Scholarship • Innovation and Entrepreneurship Historically, our annual retreat is a wonderful opportunity to network with colleagues and hear great presentations. This is our time! At no other event do we assemble the collective minds of academic chairs and administrators in one place. At our individual jobs, chairs and administrators are — or should — be joined at the hip. This year has been unprecedented in that not only have chairs been, as always, instrumental in planning this retreat, they’ve also joined our Benchmarking Committee. Also this year, in recognition of our maturation as an academy, we formulated our AAAEM Strategic Plan to ensure our continued march to success and lay the foundation for our academy’s growth. You’ve all worked hard in your various committees for the unselfish reasons of helping this organization grow professionally and assisting colleague administrators, whether experienced or new to the profession. Thank you. Thanks also to the AACEM/AAAEM Retreat Planning Committee for organizing such a great event. I was privileged to be part of such a spectacular group. Miami is a wonderful city! It is not all work. In emergency medicine we work in high stress environments, so for these few days while we’re here, take some time to sit back, relax, and share information and stories with your colleagues. Many of you have also brought your families—get out there and have some fun with them! I look forward to seeing all of you.

AAAEM Awards SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO AAAEM CATHI A. HARBERTSON Cathi A. Harbertson is a business services Analyst with the Johns Hopkins Department of Emergency Medicine. Ms. Harbertson began her work in the department immediately after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in 2008. She worked briefly as the assistant to the chair and quickly advanced to become a project analyst for the information systems and technology administrator. She has spent the past four years as business/data analyst and has been an integral part of developing a robust data and reporting structure for the Emergency Departments of Johns Hopkins Medicine. She is responsible for creating operational, research, regulatory, and financial reports that have been extremely useful for both administrative and clinical staff and leadership at Hopkins. Aside from the significant time devoted to the AAAEM surveys each year, her current work focuses on helping operationalize ED clinical decision-making pathways to improve a variety of challenges in the health system’s emergency departments. Cathi received her Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University. She is pursuing an MBA through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She has three small children ages 8, 5, and 2. When time permits, she enjoys cooking, exercising, traveling with her husband and volunteering with her church and community. She also likes to read and play piano. Cathi, who became an official member of AAAEM in 2016, has been an integral part of the ED benchmarking and salary surveys since 2011. She, alongside the AAAEM Benchmarking Committee, creates, troubleshoots, corrects, amasses, and analyzes the results each year. She constantly strives to make the survey easier to complete, the summaries more meaningful, and looks forward to contributing to significant improvements in future years.

AAAEM Awards LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD LINDA DAVIS MOON Linda Davis-Moon, MSN, CRNP, APRNBC, ALC, is the executive director for strategic initiatives in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. Linda has been a strong advocate for AAAEM, leading the way in the development of our academy; she has served in numerous roles, including president. Her leadership in organizing the Santa Fe meeting (our third retreat and the first to host significant content specific to AAAEM) was significant to the development of the retreat as a “real meeting. Linda has, for many years, led the way in managing the Department of Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. Her role balanced department management with the practice of medicine as an active NP who continued to see patients. This experience gave her a unique perspective as administrator and clinician. Linda is driven to excellence and leads the way with her development of Authentic Leadership and Strategic vision. Linda exhibits the professionalism and inclusiveness of a mature leader who thinks carefully before speaking, weighs all perspectives that are brought to the table, and makes sure to listen and understand all viewpoints as she weighs her decisions. Linda received a Master of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing. Her interests include: authentic leadership, injury prevention, innovation, and design in health care. Linda is the chair of the AAAEM Strategic Planning Committee; she served as president of AAAEM in 2014-15. Her passions are music, reading, and travel, having visited over 24 countries to date!

AACEM Awards DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD The AACEM Distinguished Service Award is reserved for an individual who has brought honor and distinction to AACEM by demonstrating outstanding leadership in, and making significant contributions to, the advancement of academic emergency medicine through leadership, education, research, clinical care, administration, public and professional service, and/or civic duties. This year’s honored individual certainly meets all of these qualities. We are excited to announce the 2017 AACEM Distinguished Service Award winner at this year’s Awards Reception.
