AACEM/AAAEM RETREAT — San Diego, CA — March 11-14, 2018

Welcome to San Diego! Welcome to Coronado! Learn. Network. Rejuvenate! These are a few of the reasons we join each other in retreat. Through group discussions and plenary presentations, programmed networking opportunities, and time to relax or explore, any purpose for joining this year’s retreat can be fulfilled. This year represents a milestone: It is the 10th meeting for which we have partnered with our administrative colleagues. As chairs, we continue to recognize the synergy that occurs when our academic administrative partners gather with us to hear similar messages, learn as we learn, and grow alongside us. The planning committee thoughtfully considered feedback from prior retreats; as a result, several presentations will involve the collective while there will be other times that facilitate frank and open discussions among specific groups, such as chairs only. We are fortunate for other leaders who wish to be engaged with us, and we will tap into their expertise and perspectives. We will also hear from several of our own colleagues who similarly have valuable information to share. Among the most appealing characteristics of the AACEM is the manner in which it supports chairs by facilitating communication and knowledge exchange. At this retreat, some of these exchanges are formally organized while others were deliberately planned to ensure ample opportunities for less formal discussions and for rejuvenation. In my personal experience, the greatest value of these retreats often comes while taking a walk, seeing some sites, getting in some exercise, or enjoying a refreshment with a colleague. Coronado provides a beautiful and inspiring setting for all we came to do. On behalf of your AACEM, thank you for being here. It is your willingness to take time out of what is most certainly a hectic pace that makes this retreat possible. Thank you also to our thoughtful planning committee, to our speakers and discussion leaders, and to our wonderful staff who make sure it all comes together! I hope you enjoy the retreat. Learn. Network. Rejuvenate!

Welcome to San Diego! Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the 10th Annual AACEM/AAAEM joint retreat in beautiful San Diego! We have come a long way since our first retreat in Austin, Texas back in April of 2009. We weren’t even an academy back then! Since that time, much has been achieved in terms of the content and structure of our meetings, and the quality of our networking opportunities and social interactions. Over the years, many friendships have been formed and our community—both within our academy and with our chair partners—has become close knit. We have historically viewed this annual retreat not so much as a classic type of learning experience, but as an opportunity to network formally and informally with our colleagues. Indeed, the friendships we have forged these past 10 years are meaningful and extend beyond this meeting, but make no mistake: learning is a central and critical component of these retreats, and each of us is a more informed and effective administrator as a result. We are grateful for Dr. Brian Zink’s challenge, issued early in our formation, encouraging the chairs to come together in a more structured manner. Likewise, we appreciate the vision of Drs. Ken Marx, Jim Scheulen, Amal Khalil, Peter Forester, and many others, who recognized way back in 2007 in San Francisco, the potential level of peer networking and shared knowledge that these retreats today embody. In planning for this year’s retreat, we recognized the value of informal learning and organized the agenda accordingly. We also acknowledged that this meeting is called a “retreat,” and that we owe it to ourselves to take time to achieve a modicum of work-life balance while we’re here. Therefore, we hope you’ll take advantage of the many opportunities that our sojourn in the historic Del Coronado afford us for rest and relaxation. In fact, you will note that we have reshaped our format to allow for this extra time of respite. Thank you to all of the members of the AACEM-AAAEM Retreat Planning Committee and to the SAEM staff for helping this retreat come together so smoothly and successfully. A special word of recognition to Amy Jameson and her team for pulling together the historical perspective of our retreats… You’ll want to make sure to come to lunch on Monday to see it! Remember to wear your badges so that we can connect the names and faces of those with whom we interacted throughout the year. This year we are also recognizing with a special ribbon those individuals who have attended all 10 retreats, so if that is you, be sure to get your ribbon when you register! Finally, please let SAEM staff or any of the Executive Committee members know if we can help in any way. Enjoy your time in San Diego!
