11 ANNUAL TH
AACEM/AAAEM RETREAT — San Juan, Puerto Rico — March 10 - 13, 2019
WiFi Information – Username: AACEM*AAAEM Password: 19Retreat
Welcome to San Juan!! Welcome to Puerto Rico! For the first time ever, AACEM and AAAEM have ventured off the continental 48 states to try something new. Our hosts have endured one of the most devastating natural catastrophes in American history, and yet they have persevered and rebuilt. In many ways, this reflects our own need for resiliency in the field of Emergency Medicine. This retreat is a chance for all of us to rejuvenate and rebuild our individual reserves of wellness in hopes of persevering in our professional lives. With the assistance and direction of SAEM staff, our retreat planning committee has planned an outstanding program, incorporating many of the thoughtful suggestions and ideas brought forward by those attending our conference last spring in San Diego. We hope you find the topics and discussions engaging while finding the time to relax and recuperate. As we begin the second decade of the AACEM/AAAEM Annual Retreat, the future continues to be bright for both of our organizations. Through the work of many individuals over the years, our annual meeting has evolved in ways that few imagined when we began. It is now the premiere conference for Emergency Medicine Chairs, and I anticipate that it will only grow and get better. Thank you for your attendance and your contributions to this year’s retreat. Enjoy all that Puerto Rico has to offer. We are excited to bring our group to this location and aid the local community’s effort to rebuild their tourism industry. At the same time, we hope your retreat is informative, useful and most of all, just plain fun! Enjoy the Retreat!

Welcome to San Juan! Dear Colleagues, It is hard to believe that it has been one year since we met in San Diego. Each year the site of the retreat seems to be even more beautiful than the previous year. This is the case again this year as we find ourselves at this stunning location in the beautiful commonwealth of Puerto Rico. At last year’s retreat, we celebrated the 10year anniversary of the joint retreat. At this year’s retreat, we are celebrating another 10-year anniversary, of AAAEM becoming an academy of SAEM. Special thanks go out to the pioneers of our academy who had the vision to recognize the need for this professional organization and the benefits the academy could provide to its members, AACEM, and academic emergency medicine. This year’s program was developed based upon feedback provided by the attendees at the San Diego retreat and topics suggested by the membership of AACEM and AAAEM. I think you will find the content of the retreat interesting and thought provoking. One change to this year’s programming is an emphasis on data analytics. The presentation of the benchmark survey data has been one of the highlights of past retreats. As a result, at least one data analytics topic is scheduled for each day and Roundtable Analytics will have Drop-in Office Hours. We hope to move this to the next level by highlighting potential opportunities for improvement through data analytics. Thanks to the AACEM/AAAEM Joint Retreat Planning Committee and SAEM for all of their hard work over the past year putting this retreat together. I hope that you will have time to relax and enjoy this beautiful venue, spend time with your friends, engage in intellectually stimulating discussions, and leave feeling energized.
