12 ANNUAL TH

AACEM/AAAEM RETREAT — Palm Desert, California — March 15 - 18, 2020

WiFi Information – Username: AACEM*AAAEM Password: 20Retreat

Welcome to Palm Desert!! Welcome to the 12th Annual AACEM/AAAEM Joint Retreat! We call this event a “retreat” for a reason. It’s a time to pull back, get inspired, find your people, and revitalize. Although our agenda includes a strong list of speakers and educational sessions, one of the main objectives of this retreat is to network with colleagues and share successes and challenges, so please take the opportunity while you are here to engage, ask questions, and connect. “Thank you” to our planning committee and staff for putting together another outstanding program. We will kick off our event by hearing from two former emergency medicine chairs (now deans). This will be followed by two sessions: one that addresses disparities in compensation and a second with tips on how to help the aging physician ride off into the sunset. Also on day one: be sure to take advantage of the one-on-one coaching available from the Roundtable Analytics team. During the morning of day two, we will break into three tracks to allow for more intimate discussions; this will be followed by a lunch session where we will have the opportunity to learn important lessons from the first-hand accounts of those directly involved in the closure of Hahnemann University Hospital. Day three will open with our annual presentation of the Benchmark Survey highlights which will be followed by early emergency medicine leaders sharing helpful tips and takeaways. The day will conclude with an interactive “open mic” style discussions of hot topics. Please note that AACEM and AAAEM are presently working on updating strategic plans that will set the trajectory for both organizations over the next 4–5 years so if you have ideas you would like to share, please find an Executive Committee member and feel free to speak your mind. We’re glad you could join us for the 12th Annual AACEM/AAAEM Joint Retreat. Enjoy the desert sunshine!

Welcome to Palm Desert!! Welcome to Palm Desert, California for our 12th Annual AACEM/ AAAEM Retreat! There are many things to see and do during your time in Palm Desert: Experience the Living Desert, play a round of golf, tour the historic Sunnylands estate and grounds, explore the rich Mexican heritage of the Coachella Valley, or cool off at Whitewater Preserve. Please be sure you take some time to relax and have some fun while you’re in this beautiful area! Last year AAAEM celebrated its 10th anniversary as an SAEM academy. Many of those original thought leaders are here among us this week. To them, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and say, “thank you” for recognizing the need to establish an academic academy for administrators and doing the heavy lifting early on to make it happen. Thanks also to the AACEM/AAAEM retreat planning committee and nominating committee who, with the help of SAEM staff, have made this retreat one of the best professional experiences of the year. They’ve jointly planned this year’s event around our specialty’s hottest, most relevant topics, and taken what was good from before and made it even better! Based on evaluations from previous retreats, you can look forward this year to panel presentations, shorter sessions, and more time for discussion and feedback — because we recognize the best learning comes from each other’s experiences. And because wellness is always on everyone’s mind, both personally and professionally, we’re happy to tell that the Wellness Committee has arranged for several wellness-focused retreat activities. In addition, we are proud to bring you our first-ever AAAEM keynote speaker: Mike Granovsky, MD, president of Logix Health, a national ED coding and billing company and one of the few practicing MDs in the country who is also a certified coder. Dr. Granovsky is the founder of Greater Washington Emergency Physicians where he is currently the chief financial officer as well as a practicing clinician. We would be remiss if we did not express our appreciation to all our committee chairs and committee members who have volunteered their time to improve our organization and move AAAEM along an upward trajectory. Not only have our new membership categories helped increase our membership numbers, but our communication and response time has been vastly improved. What’s more, our member education opportunities, which include webinars and the CAEMA program, continue to impress. And finally, we are proud to report that we are fiscally responsible to the point of being able to carry over some reserves for future AAAEM initiatives. Thanks to the hard work of many people, we are in a good place and looking at a bright future. 12th Annual AACEM/AAAEM Retreat is a time for networking and career development, a chance to forge new relationships and reconnect with old friends, and an opportunity to stay informed with the current and future landscape of emergency medicine. We hope you’ll spend some time engaging with your fellow administrators, welcoming our new members, and enjoy your time away from the office. Please let AAAEM or SAEM staff know if you need anything. Have fun in California!
