Public Asked To Report Dog bite cases The general public has been asked to report the cases of animal bite, especially dog bites, to the Ghana Veterinary Services (GVS) to avoid the risk of constricting rabies infection. Dr Kwadwo Obeng-Wiredu, the GVS Deputy Director for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly, gave the instructions and informed the public to late diagnosis of rabies infection most often leads to death of person. He stated that it is essential to report straight away to GVS the instant you are bitten by animal or dog. He instructed that do not wait till the signs of the disease begin to show. Dr Obeng-Wiredu, who is also in charge of the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly, further said that the instant a person got bitten, the wound should immediately be washed off with a antiseptic medicine and a report made to the vet office.
According to him, in order to examine the animal for presence of rabies, the dog or animal that bit the person don’t need to be killed, but rather be sent to the veterinary. He said that if you bring the animal this would give to benefit because when we examined and find out that it does not have rabies, that would save you the problem of going through anti-rabies treatment. Dr Obeng-Wiredu said in some cases where the dog or animal is killed, but on the other hand the bite victim is treated for rabies, because it was assumed the animal may have had rabies, that would also create problem. He advised people who deal with animals that could bite, especially dogs, in that cases veterinarians and dog trainers need to be careful as they expose themselves to dogs. http://www.ghanalive.tv/2018/07/27/public-asked-report-dogbite-cases/
