Genesis

Original Title: Bereshit (Hebrew), “in the beginning,” which corresponds to the first two words of the original text and keeps on the ancient tradition of naming a literary work after its first words.

Current Title: Genesis comes from the Greek Septuagint translation of the Bible and it means “beginning.” Author and Date: Written by Moses sometime in the fifteenth century B.C. (around 14451405). Language: Written in Hebrew. Outline: 1. The history of the origins (1:1-11:32) 2. The history of the patriarchs (12:1-50:26) a. Abraham (12:1-25:34) b. Isaac (26:1-35) c. Jacob (27:1-36:43) d. Joseph (37:1-50:26)

CONTENT The theme of the book is creation, sin, and re-creation. It features the Creation report, the story of the Fall, and many other important events, such as the Flood, the Tower of Babel, and the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. There is a recurrent pattern along the narrative: God creates, but then satanic influences or erroneous human decisions destroy a divine plan or a life project; finally, the Lord restores the situation, giving new opportunities and hopes. The book of Genesis has special doctrinal importance. It explains the entrance of sin into this world and the principles of God’s plan of Redemption. Since the beginning, righteousness by faith is the only way to be saved. How God Is Portrayed and Jesus Is Typified in the Book of Genesis God (1:1-31; 2:1-3; 3:3, 5; 48:15); Lord God (2:4-22; 3:1, 8, 9, 13, 14, 22, 23); I am your shield (15:1); I am the Lord (15:7; 28:13); the God Who Sees (16:13); I am Almighty God (17:1); the Judge of all the earth (18:25); the Everlasting God (21:33); Here I Am (22:11); the God of heaven and the God of the earth (24:3); I Am/God Almighty (35:11; 48:3); I am God, the God of your father (46:3; 49:25; 50:17). Jesus is portrayed as the seed of the woman (3:15; see Gal. 3:16; 4:4); the Messiah who would be a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (12:3, 17:19; 22:18; 28:13-15; see Matt. 1; Luke 3:23-34); the Angel of the Lord/of God (16:7, 9-11; 21:17; 22:11, 15; 31:11; see Jude 9; 1 Thess. 4:16; John 1:18; 1 Tim. 6:16); shepherd (49:24; see John 10:11, 14, 16; 1 Pet. 2:25; 5:4); king in the line of Judah (49:10; see Luke 3:33; John 1:49); and as Shiloh (Peacemaker) (49:10; see John 14:27; Heb. 7:12); also typified in the firstborn (of the flock) (4:4; see Rom. 8:29; Col. 1:15-21); in the person of Melchizedek (14:18; see Heb. 5: 5, 6; 7:1); in the life of Isaac—the sacrificed son (22; see Eph. 5:2; Heb. 10:12); in the Lamb for the sacrifice (22:8; see John 1:29, 36; Rev. 5:6, 9; 13:8); and in the life of Joseph—the rejected brother (37; see John 7:3-5; Mark 6:4).

CONTENT The Gospel of Matthew is the story of Jesus of Nazareth, documented by the apostle Matthew as an undeniable eyewitness that Jesus is the predicted Messiah, who brought the kingdom of God to this world for both Jews and Gentiles. For that reason, the author is particularly interested in demonstrating Jesus’ messianic identity, His inheritance of the Davidic kingdom, and the way He is the accomplishment of the promise made to Abraham.
