Food Drive Food insecurity is a growing issue in Seattle and the University community. According to Northwest Harvest, 1 in 6 people in Washington State rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is threatened by budget cuts. To help alleviate the stresses of food insecurity, the HNI team is conducting a food drive in the north of 45th community this month. All food collected will be donated to the University District Food Bank (UDFB), located on the corner of NE 50th St and 15th Ave NE. The UDFB distributes food based
on daily nutritional requirements through a unique setup similar to a grocery store, providing a respectful environment for the families it serves. In 2013 the UDFB distributed approximately 2.2 million pounds of food. Please help the UDFB continue its outstanding service by donating canned and dried goods, as well as toiletries. Common food items needed include canned fruit & vegetables, soup, pasta, rice, cereal, and soy & rice milk. Donations of other
items such as bar soap, toothpaste, diapers, and baby food are greatly appreciated. The HNI team will do all the heavy lifting, and even provide you with a bag to place your items in! Simply place your donations in the paper bag distributed along with this newsletter, and set the bag out on your porch by 10 am on Sunday, November 16th. We will collect the bags and deliver them to the food bank. Let’s do our best to support our local community services this season!
Seattle’s New Rental Registration and Inspection November 11th is Veterans Day Thank you to all who have served in our Armed Forces
In late 2012 the Seattle City Council passed the Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) to help ensure that all rental housing is safe and meets basic maintenance standards. Under
RRIO, all rental properties must register with the city and pass a periodic inspection; properties must meet a checklist of housing standards in order to continue the
renting process. Owners of 1 to 4 unit rental properties in the 98105 zip code must register by the June 30, 2015 deadline, and inspections will begin in 2015. Properties are

Rental Registration & Inspection Ordinance Cont. selected in random order for inspection at least once every 10 years. What does this mean for student renters in the north of 45th community? Property owners and renters will work together to maintain their property, meaning tenants can request a unit be inspected if they are concerned it doesn’t meet standard requirements. The
RRIO checklist outlines key safety items required by all rental housing, including emergency escape windows and doors, electrical standards, and plumbing standards. The full checklist can be found at www.seattle.gov/RRIO, along with detailed info on the registration process.
need to be aware of their rights as tenants to live in safe and well-maintained properties. RRIO will be a key resource for students as they navigate through the renting process; they will be able to check if a property meets standard and make well-informed housing decisions.

Night Walk—December 2nd Be Safe this Thanksgiving and Secure Your Property!
The Night Walk is an event structured towards improving the neighborhood’s infrastructural problems. We will be beginning at around 5pm, and covering 16th-22nd Ave from NE 45th Street— Ravenna Boulevard.
Things we will be looking at are: Damaged Sidewalks Broken Street Lights Overgrowth Safety Issues Overall Infrastructure Improvement Ideas
If you would like to help address these problems, and move towards fixing deeper infrastructure structural problems, please come out. I (Chris) will be working to try and alleviate issues in the infrastructure that I believe are contributing to increased crime rate.
Thanksgiving Safety Tips Soon, Thanksgiving will be upon us, and that means many of you may be going out of town on vacation. If this is the case, please be sure to double check that all of your windows and doors are securely locked

and you notify a neighbor that you will be out of town. Also make sure that your windows’ blinds are shut, so that nobody can see inside your residence. Possibly consider leaving on a small, low wattage light
near a window to create the illusion of someone being present at your residence. With that being said, have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
