Warm and sunny with a vibe of great jazz: Copenhagen, already an eminently cool city, will soon be swinging and strutting more sumptuously for 10 days in July, during this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival. It’s only surprising that one doesn’t find a mention of it in the weather report: Warm and sunny with a vibe of great jazz showering everybody. By Johnny Niemann A city of sound Starting in 1979, this Jazz Festival has become one of the best in the world. The formula, to open the city entirely up to jazz, is not repeated at any other festival. Should a bar, a café, a city square, a bookstore (any venue whatsoever) desire to arrange a concert, they are welcome to, and will happily be added to the programme under the auspices of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. It’s egalitarian (over 1,000 concerts at over 100 venues), promoting a proliferation of jazz around the city, so much so that one can stumble along and suddenly hear echoes of concerts beaming against historic buildings. It is advised that you tread cautiously for fear of tripping over trumpets while strolling over the center’s cobblestone streets. Outdoor concerts, free concerts, concerts at prestigious concert halls, jazz in smoky old clubs, street parades, impromptu jam sessions, jazz for kids, jazz by the sea, jazz on boats, bebop, ragtime, modern jazz, free jazz, cool jazz, fusion, funk and blues – it’s all here, celebrated and situated at the center of the jazz universe here in Copenhagen from July 5th to 14th.

Big names and beginner acts The artistic director of the festival, Kenneth Hansen, spoke on what makes the festival, now in its 35th year, so special, “It’s the close interaction with the city, the many different kinds of venues, and the special spirit of the festival,” he says. “I think it’s because the festival has been going on for

so many years. It’s like an old tree of the city that grows new branches and leaves every year – but has strong roots that goes very deep into the ground – like a Joe Lovano solo!” The festival of course has its highlights and big names. Over the years many major names in jazz history have held sway in the city; from Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman to Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie. However, a noticeable shift has happened in recent years as the lions of this once mainstream music have reached an advanced age or passed on. The easiest thing to do to fill this gap would be to invite musicians outside of the genre, such as Kanye West or Sting as the Stockholm Jazz Festival has done in recent years. This cynical approach to festival-making ensures profits, but weakens the genre of jazz. Under Hansen’s musical-stewardship, the festival stays true to its roots and recognises that jazz is not just about big names and the bottom line, but about local musicians and building a community based on two important jazz tenets: Improvisation and collaboration. A jazz aficionado can still enjoy big names like Charles Lloyd at Statens Museum for Kunst – an evening venue for the first time (July 5th); Cassandra Wilson at Gamle Scene (July 6 ) or Joe Lovano at the Benny Nansen Theater (July 9th). But it’s not the big stars that make this festival special – it’s the constellations of artists and discoveries that await the curious listener. Jazzhus Montmarte, The Copenhagen

Egalitarian sounds Two great examples of the diverse programming, blending the traditional and the modern, take place at Pressen and Skuespilhuset. Pressen over the past few years has become a central location for spirited themes ranging from Latin Jazz to African Jazz. This year ‘The Spirit of New Orleans’ holds court. Jazz traditions began in New Orleans and names like Branford Marsalis, Terrance Blanchard and the Soul Rebels celebrate the city’s timeless contributions and influence. At the fresh and modern Skuespilhuset, sitting stylishly by the canal, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival presents an intriguing new theme: Jazz Against the Machine – where jazz music is mixed with electronic music. Though some traditionalists may fret over this new approach, jazz music as an art form has always been innovating and adapting, sometimes alienating the old guard, but often enough working together across generations. When these ten days are done, you will have an understanding of one important part of what makes Copenhagen so wonderful – the music echoes through the fall, the bitter Winter days, and gives promise of renewal and bright rays of jazz ahead.

Unlikely duo Normally the American actress and singer Macy Gray is not considered a jazz artist, however, thanks to saxophonist David Murray this conception will no doubt be changed during this year’s festival. The latter has invited the soulful women to join his band after a string of successful big band clashes with her over the past few years. Macy Gray experienced great success with her debut album On How Life Is (1999) that included the international hit single ‘I try’. This year will be her first at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, but for David Murray it will be a pleasant return after his show in 2008.

Murray’s unrefined beginnings Few musicians in jazz history have proven more vigorously productive and resourceful than David Murray. During the past 35 years, from the moment he first visited New York as a 20-year-old student, playing in a walkup loft, in 1975, David has careened forward in a cool, collected, rocket-fueled streak. He has released over 150 albums under his own name. Yet more impressive than the numbers is the constancy of two abiding achievements: As a tenor saxophonist, he has perfected an instantly recognisable approach to improvisation that even in its freest flights acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most; and he has altered the context for his improvisations as an infinite mosaic of musical challenges and explorations. Murray jumped the gun somewhat for a jazz musician. Born in Oakland, he grew up in Berkeley and studied with Catherine Murray (his mother, an organist), Bobby Bradford, Arthur Blythe, Stanley Crouch and many others until the 2nd March 1975 when he left Ponoma College in Los Angeles for New York, which he made his base. He did this during the city’s loft jazz era, a time when free jazz found a home in deserted industrial spaces and other undervalued bits of urban real estate below 14th Street. Murray and writer Stanley Crouch opened their own loft space, which they called Studio Infinity. Crouch occasionally played drums in Murray’s trio with bassist Mark Dresser. In a relatively short time, Murray acquired a reputation as a potential great. Murray’s early work was exceedingly raw, he made his first albums in 1976, Flowers for Albert (India Navigation) and Low Class Conspiracy (Adelphi), with a rhythm section of bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Phillip Wilson. Also in 1976, Murray became (with Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett) a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet. 4

In the 1980s, Murray performed with the WSQ, his octet, and various small bands, recording mostly for the Italian Black Saint label. His octet records of the time (though very roughly executed) showed him to be a talented (if unformed) composer. Murray’s recording activity reached nearly absurd levels in the 1980s and 1990s; probably no contemporary jazz musician has led more dates on more labels. It was in the 1980s that Murray began relying more on the standard jazz repertoire, especially in his small ensemble work. As he got older, the wilder elements of that style were toned down or refined. Murray incorporated free jazz gestures into a more fully rounded voice that also drew on the mainstream of the jazz improvising tradition.

Global maestro Now in his fifties, he has contributed diversely within the jazz industry globally, and still has a rosy future ahead of him, as well as a successful past behind him. Since a glimpse of this exceptional career with a very promising future was felt to be essential, several directors have brought his musical career to the screen, in Speaking in Tongues, a saga which follows him for ten years from 1978 to 1988 or in Jazzman, in 1997. In 2007, Arte produced Saxophone Man, in a reference to the title of the Stanley Croutch play written at the time of Pomona College: A year’s filming from New York to Pointe-à-Pitre, via Oakland and Paris, a year of images which reflect the David Murray of today, a global jazz maestro. He goes down as a worthy successor to some of the biggest names in jazz, and he is now contributing to the rise of young talents such as Lafayette Gilchrist, a young pianist who has already been widely acclaimed by the critics.

The soulful voice of Macy Gray This Grammy Award winning neo-soul/R&B singer, songwriter, record producer and actress has to date, released several albums. She has acted in a number of movies including Training Day, Idlewild, and Lackawanna Blues, however Gray is best known for her raspy singing voice. She started her music career as a songwriter. Her first album, in 1999, was actually a mistake; she was at the studio waiting for the person who was supposed to be singing her song, and the producer wanted to hear what one of the songs was supposed to sound like. Once she started singing, the producer liked the rough sound of her voice so much that he offered her a record deal.

Murray’s collaboration with Macy Gray, came about as a result of their work within the musical project Questlove AfroPicks (including the likes of Tony Allen, Questlove from The Roots and Amp Fiddler). Gray then asked Murray to rearrange a cover song (Love Lockdown, composed by Kanye West) for her album, Covered. Later, Murray invited Gray, the soul music star (with more than 14 million albums sold), to sing in his Big Band (David Murray Big Band Featuring Macy Gray). They are the perfect combination: A unique voice and sophisticated jazz composer. This makes this project one of the most exciting sounds of this year. Surprising and wonderful, the project has already conquered audiences from famous festival such as: Jazz A La Villette (Paris), London Jazz Festival (London), North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), and more.

Very few musicians can boast a more diverse and genre-crossing career than bassist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller, who will feature at this Summer’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival. The New York native has featured on more than 500 albums with musicians ranging from Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock and Mariah Carey to LL Cool J and Billy Idol. Arguably his most famous collaboration came in 1986 when he wrote and produced most of Miles Davies’ album Tutu, an alnn Du bum that can be said to define the w e r nd later years of Davies’ amazing career. Far :A Pic from being just a good session player, Miller has released eleven studio albums; the first being his 1983 funk album Suddenly and the latest his 2012 jazzy release Renaissance.

Born into the sound of jazz Miller was born in 1959, incidentally the same year Miles Davis released the widely influential Kind of Blue, it would seem as though he was destined for a career as a musician. His father was a church organist and choir director and his father’s cousin was renowned jazz pianist Wynton Kelly, who played the piano on Kind of Blue. Miller started his musical career early on, with the clarinet being his first serious instrument. He claims that the reason for switching from the clarinet was troubles getting into R&B bands while playing it. Through his search for a more R&B friendly instrument he found the instrument he seems to have been made for — the bass. “I picked up the bass one day when I was around 12 or 13 years old and just fell in love with it,” he told industry website forbassplayersonly.com. Already as an unhardened 15 year old he started making the rounds as a session player in New York. Not long after he received a phone call from Davis asking if he could play with him. Since then he has been awarded numerous Grammy’s and industry recognitions, including The Recording Academy’s Most Valuable Player Award. Miller is arguably one of the most technically apt bass players out there with his signature thumb slap usually bringing a welcoming funk element to his jazz. So both lovers of technical brilliance and of music should mark their calendars for July 9th as it is sure to be an evening to remember.

An evening with Miller Miller comes to Copenhagen fronting his very own sextet ensemble. The evening is set to include some the best the bass can produce as fellow bass virtuoso Richard Bona along with his band is the other act of the night. The Cameroon born Bona can boast of an impressive repertoire having released nine studio albums and collaborated with notable musicians such as George Benson and Chaka Kahn. The concert takes place in the charming setting of the Royal Theatre’s Old Scene, which is one of Copenhagen’s oldest concert halls. Although the venue takes upwards of 1 600 guests, the old décor creates an intimate atmosphere well suited for enjoying music. The last time Miller played in Copenhagen was the Jazz Festival back in 2010, a concert that received stellar reviews from critics. This year he performs with a slightly different line-up, but talented saxophone player Alex Han and trumpeter Sean Jones, who near stole the show last time are set to repeat the wonder.

Bill Frisell and The Big Sur Sextet (US) An international guitar hero strumming his stuff at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2013

Leading jazz guitarist Guitarist Bill Frisell is treasured by the Copenhagen jazz audience – he always presents new material and every time it is musically interesting. The band that Frisell performs with during this year’s jazz festival consists of two female violinists; Jenny Scheinman and Carrie Rodriguez, plus violist Eyvind Kang, cellist Hank Roberts and finally drummer Rudy Royston. The evening will be opened by the American singer Lizz Wright whose tasty mixture of jazz and gospel has given her the moniker “The Black Norah Jones”. William Richard “Bill” Frisell is one of the leading guitarists in jazz since the late 1980s. Frisell’s eclectic music touches on progressive folk, classical music, country music, noise and more. He is known for using an array of effects to create unique sounds from his instrument. Over the years, Frisell has contributed to the work of countless international artists, both within the jazz genre and from others. This work has established Frisell as one of the most soughtafter guitar voices in contemporary music. The breadth of such performing and recording situations is a testament not only to his singular guitar conception, but his musical versatility as well.

Strumming with jazz’s finest In the late 1970s, he traveled to Belgium, where he met Manfred Eicher, the founder of ECM Records. Beginning in the early 1980s, Frisell recorded prolifically for the label as leader and sideman, with such musicians as Paul Motian and Jan Garbarek. He continued with the label throughout the decade, earning a reputation as ECM’s “house guitarist.” Frisell became much acclaimed by critics for his sophisticated yet accessible work. He moved to New York in the 1980s where he worked with many of the most creative musicians active on the city’s “downtown” jazz scene. He continued to record and perform in the 1980s and 1990s, with a huge variety of artists, not all of them jazz musicians. Collaborators included rock and pop musicians (drummer Ginger Baker, singers Marianne Faithfull and Elvis Costello), experimental jazz musicians (saxophonist/composers John Zorn and Tim Berne), and at least one classical composer (Gavin Bryars). Frisell composed soundtracks for the silent films of Buster Keaton. 6

Frisell also became an annual winner of various magazine polls for his solo work and recordings. By the end of the 1990s, Frisell was one of the most well-known jazz musicians in the world, with an audience and an aesthetic that transcended the boundaries of any given style. It should be mentioned that, while he is best known for his somewhat “ambient” guitar technique, he is a swinging, harmonically fluent jazz player when the occasion warrants. Frisell moved to Seattle, Washington in 1989 and stayed active as the 21st century opened, releasing Ghost Town in 2000, followed by a set with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones in 2001. Blues Dream also appeared that same year, followed by The Willies in 2002. East/West and Richter 858 were both released in 2005, and a set with Ron Carter and Paul Motian in 2006. History, Mystery followed in 2008. Other notable projects that Frisell worked on post-2010 include his 2011 All We Are Saying..., where he delved into the music of John Lennon. A long-time fan of the Beatles’ singing and songwriting, he cut closely to Lennon’s original versions; Frisell found ways to explore the melody and emotional content of Lennon’s songs without having to overtly change the harmonic content of the material. He also re-established his connection with John Zorn’s music, appearing as part of the ensemble for the composer’s Gnostic Preludes with harpist Carol Emmanuel and Kenny Wollesen on vibraphone. The album was issued on Tzadik a week after Floratone II. He released another album for the label in early 2013, entitled Silent Comedy, which featured the guitarist in a solo setting. Frisell, the composer, returned in a big way in June of this year, employing his 858 quartet and drummer Rudy Royston. Together they recorded Big Sur, his debut for Sony’s relaunched Okeh imprint.

Still going strong He continues to play with Paul Motian’s Trio, with Joe Lovano, and has also performed with Jim Hall, Don Byron, Ginger Baker, Charlie Haden, David Sanborn, Marianne Faithful, Elvis Costello, Ron Carter, and the Hal Willner produced tribute to Harry Smith. He performed Steve Mackey’s composition “Deal at Carnegie Hall” with the American Composers Orchestra conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and in Los Angeles with members of the L.A. Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. As he is also becoming more active as a film composer, Bill’s music can be heard in Gary Larson’s Tales from the Farside, Gus van Sant’s Psycho and Finding Forrester, Rory Kennedy’s documentary for HBO, American Hollow. He has also written music for the Frankfurt Ballett and the ACT Theatre’s production of Temporary Help. In addition Frisell has featured on TV, including shows such as; Night Music, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Sessions at West 54th Street. When he’s home, he likes to play at clubs like The Tractor Tavern.

The original jazz venue: Montmartre Jazzhus Montmartre is a renowned jazz hotspot in the heart of Copenhagen, presenting world class live jazz at the original intimate venue where it all began in 1959. We sit down with Montmartre’s musical director, Christian Brorsen, and discover the history behind this fantastic club, as well as get his thoughts on the 2013 edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival (CJF).

The swing of jazz Christian has been the musical director at Jazzhus Montmartre since 2011. He says that jazz music makes him happy and gives him inspiration. “When jazz is played at the highest artistic level it gives me a feeling of being one with the music and being in the moment. Something the modern man almost never experiences being distracted by phones, TV and just living a stressful and busy life,” he explains. Jazz is a fast-growing genre globally, and is becoming more popular and accessible to the average person through events such as CJF. “There are clubs in almost every small town in Denmark, but most importantly Copenhagen is again the leading jazz city in Europe. The strange thing is that public TV and radio largely ignore jazz, but there has never been as many people listening and playing the music as right now,” he says.

“In 2010 the original room where Montmartre was situated came up for sale and a group of people decided to open Montmartre again – the name and place renound with so many musicians all over the world.” Today the club again attracts the finest musicians in jazz, now there are both American’s and European’s who visit and play, including Kenny Barron, Enrico Pieranunzi, Pat Martino, Steve Kuhn, Mulgrew Miller, to name a few.

The innovative sounds of Charles Lloyd Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd has been hailed as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Spiritual sounds On the opening night of The Copenhagen Jazz Festival, listeners can be treated to an exclusive trio with a very spiritual project “Sangam” (Hindi for confluence or union), which originally was born as a tribute to the late drummer Billy Higgins. Saxophonist Charles Lloyd was a virtual superstar at the end of the sixties. His album Forest Flower was bought by a wide audience even though it was a mix of avant-garde jazz and Eastern influences. He explored the combination of jazz and rock, until suddenly in the seventies he’d had enough and withdrew from the scene. Lloyd devoted his time to meditation. A decade later he was ready to once again seek musical innovations without losing sight of his audience.

Fine fusion and forward-thinking This forward-thinking musician’s musician whose supreme improvisational talents and interest in cross-pollinating jazz with rock as well as non-Western styles of music during the ‘60s and ‘70s established him as one of the key figures in the development of fusion and world music. Born in Memphis,

Given a saxophone at age nine, Lloyd eventually studied with Memphis legend and pianist Phineas Newborn as well as saxophonist Irvin Reason. By his teens, Lloyd was gigging locally with such artists as saxophonist George Coleman and future blues icons including Bobby “Blue” Bland, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, and others. In the late 1980s, following his return from his spiritual journey and sabbatical from the scene, Lloyd formed a quartet with Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson and released several albums on ECM. This association with ECM continued throughout the next decade, a time of renewed public interest in Lloyd, and he built a steady body of work for the label, including Voice in the Night (1999) with guitarist John Abercrombie, The Water is Wide (2000) with pianist Brad Mehldau, Hyperion with Higgins (2001), and Which Way is East (2004). His latest studio album is a duet offering with pianist Jason Moran entitled Hagar’s Song, which was issued in February of this year. Lloyd is coming to The National Gallery of Copenhagen with Zakir Hussain, a virtuoso on the tabla (classical Indian drums). Hussain has played with all the legends from his own country as well as with Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders and George Harrison. More percussion is supplied by the young Texan Eric Harland who has recorded with McCoy Tyner and Ravi Coltrane, among others.

The primary year-round jazz venue since 1991 In october 1991, Copenhagen Jazzhouse opened as a jazz club born against the backdrop of the jazz environment in the city; backed by musicians, politicians, state and municipality. Jazzhouse has since been a primary year-round scene for jazz in Denmark, with approximately 200 concerts held there annually.

Reﬂecting the contemporary and modern As such, Jazzhouse is Denmark’s only regional venue devoted solely to jazz. “We are a partly volunteer driven venue with close ties to independent organisers, so that the programme does not only reflect one man’s preferences but to some extent the preferences ‘out there’,” explains Bjarke Svendsen, daily manager and booker at Copenhagen Jazzhouse. The Jazzhouse reflects jazz history, contemporary movements and artists who don’t not have a specific jazz sound, but whose approach to music can be labelled as ‘jazzy’. “By keeping presentations open, we try to reflect on how different genres are not separated, but on the contrary, how they exceed, how they integrate in and how they feed on each other,” says Bjarke. He says that he personally enjoys Jazz because it is open, alive, happening and because of the ‘live’ element due to the improvisation that forms part of the genre. “It’s not a fixed format but a process of creating,” he explains.

Copenhagen’s lively scene Copenhagen has a very lively jazz scene at present, largely due to the strong culture born in the 1950s, but also as a result of a crop of talented new artists as Bjarke explains; “Both performing and presenting, the scene is partly defined by Copenhagen’s strong history as the jazz capital of Europe, so the good old days are still a reference point to some. On 12

the contrary a lot of newcomers are re-defining the scene too. Young musicians from the conservatory doing their own stuff, labels like Barefoot and Ilk and all the labels and people based at Mayhem.” He says that it is important that we as an industry know where we come from but also try to create something new, and find new territories. Bjarke is optimistic in that he says that jazz has a much larger potential than current popularity trend reflect, but would like the genre so dear to the soul of Denmark, to be more widely accessible. “Jazz music would benefit a lot from being included in the loop where ‘the other genres’ are being processed and communicated. Jazz is somewhat isolated and mainly gets exposure in devoted jazz magazines and on a small degree in more popular media,” he expresses.

Bjarke’s thoughts on CJF 2013 He says that there are once again tons of concerts he would like to attend, but when he thinks of the overall vibe, it is for this reason that he is most excited. “The city is buzzing with people and music and it’s a joy to be a part of this music community. So many different people take part in so many different concerts over the 10-day festival of jazz music.”

Successful saxophonist NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and Tony Award nominee Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. Leader of one of the finest jazz quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Marsalis and his Quartet of musical friends recently released Four MFs Playin’ Tunes. On this new album, the song takes centre stage, with the band members bringing their considerable musical expertise to bear, as they focus on each tune as an important musical entity unto itself and not merely a vehicle for showcasing individual talent.

Diverse career A brilliantly innovative saxophonist, Marsalis released his first album, Scenes in the City, in 1984. Having gained initial acclaim through his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his brother Wynton’s quintet in the early 1980s, Marsalis also began to perform and recorded with the who’s-who of jazz giants including; Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. He has also collaborated with a diverse array of artists including; Sting, the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby. His eclectic sound and collaboration is further reflected in his explorations in film, radio and television, including his role as the musical director of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for two years in the early 1990s.
