WELCOME TO VINTERJAZZ 2016

WITH MORE THAN 600 CONCERTS TO CHOOSE FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND A FESTIVAL EXTENDING FROM 5-28 FEBRUARY, THERE IS PLENTY TO ENJOY AT VINTERJAZZ 2016. Vinterjazz is a nationwide musical festival taking place in February, with the purpose to kickstart the jazz season for venues, jazz clubs, unions, audiences and of course the musicians, who benefit from the period’s increased activity by getting the chance to take up tours. 2015 was a record-breaking year for Vinterjazz, encompassing 100 venues and approximately 500 concerts all over Denmark. This year marks the 16th edition of Vinterjazz with over 600 concerts curated by Copenhagen Jazz Festival, along with 22 independent organisers. Compared to last year’s festival, Vinterjazz 2016 has added a week to its already sizable range of exciting concerts and events.

FROM LOCAL TO INTERNATIONAL As is usual for Vinterjazz, a selection of the festival’s headliners can be experienced at multiple venues. The nationwide musical festival hosts acts such as organ-icon Dr. Lonnie Smith, progressive Brazilian afrobeat from Bixiga 70, American instrumental jazz-rock in the shape of Tortoise

and the famous Polish trumpet legend Tomasz Stanko. As well as presenting international stars, Vinterjazz is also an important showcase for home-grown talent. Virtuoso harmonica and keyboard player, Mathias Heise, recently picked as “Jazz Star of the Year” by the Danish songwriters, composers and lyricists association, and Kathrine Windfeld, a talented pianist and composer, and her a 15-piece orchestra comprised of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian musicians, are just two of the many Danish acts on offer at this year’s festival.

PLAN YOUR FESTIVAL VIEWING ONLINE Plan your festival on My Jazz.dk or app Live Jazz Denmark, which can be downloaded free for iOS and Android. You are able to view programmes and purchase tickets to various concerns and events. For more information on the festival, and to download the full programme of events, visit www.jazz.dk.

What makes Vinterjazz such a special music event, is that it is a nationwide potluck between venues and organisers, musicians and audience, large and small cities - a national initiative created locally. Unlike its sister Festival the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Vinterjazz is primarily a club festival, to kick-start the season for the many jazz venues and organisers, all of which create an environment where jazz can develop and live all year round.

INTERNATIONAL ACTS TO WATCH WE PROFILE SOME OF THE BEST INTERNATIONAL JAZZ ACTS ON OFFER AT VINTERJAZZ 2016. BY STEPHEN GADD

Press photo: Bro Morgan Baron

Jazz, these days, has become such an elastic term, covering everything from Trad through BeBop to HipHop/TripHop-inspired electronica and world music influences. So it’s expected that at this year’s Vinterjazz Festival, there is something for everyone.

guitarist Jakob Bro is appearing with a sterling US rhythm section comprising Thomas Morgan (bass) and Joey Baron (drums). The latter is one of the most versatile drummers in the world, having worked with artists as diverse as Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, Steve Kuhn, Enrico Pieranunzi and John Zorn. (Tickets: DKK 140).

Huset presents Polish pianist Artur Tuznik and fellow-countryman Maciej Obara on alto sax, here joining forces with Anders Christensen (bass) and Jakob Højer (drums). The band’s music is pitched between conventional and free jazz and incorporates elements of Scandinavian and Polish folk-music. (Tickets: DKK 112).

POLAND IN SCANDINAVIA

Another collaboration between Poland and Scandinavia can be heard in JazzHouse on 17 February. Poland’s “grand old man” of the trum-

gave the band its name. Many of the most illustrious names in European jazz have passed through the ranks over the years, as well as Americans such as Anthony Braxton and Steve Lacy. Fifty years down the line, the music is as uncompromising and surprising as ever. Globe Unity Orchestra will be appearing in JazzHouse on 25 February. (Tickets: DKK 160). For these, and a host of other international and local acts check out the online programme. Django Reinhardt

pet, Tomasz Stanko, will feature a new group of young musicians from Poland, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Stanko is regarded as one of the foremost trumpet players in Europe. Initially coming to prominence in the Krzysztof Komeda Quintet and having worked in various styles of jazz, and with classical composers such as Penderecki. (Tickets: DKK 160).

DRUMMER-LED QUARTET One of the new generation of American drummers is Rodney Green. Green has an impeccable pedigree, having played with people as diverse as Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock. He is appearing over three days at the hallowed Jazzhus Montmartre from 18-20 February. His band consists of vibraphone virtuoso Warren Wolf plus Victor Gould (piano) and David Wong (bass). (Tickets: DKK 325).

BRAZILIAN FIREWORKS

Falling firmly under the heading of world music meets jazz, the 10man strong orchestra Bixiga 70 from SĂŁo Paulo promises a colourful hard-swinging fusion of African and Latin American styles. Initially inspired by the music of Fela Kuti, the band incorporates elements of Brazilian folk music with MalinkĂŠ rhythms from Guinea as well as the groove from American Blaxploitation films of the 70s. The band can be heard at Global on 19 February. Get out your dancing shoes! (Tickets: DKK 120).

MEMORIES OF DJANGO Continuing on a world music theme, fans of Django Reinhardt and the gypsy jazz tradition pioneered by the Hot Club of France would do well to check out the Dorado & Amati Schmitt Quintet. As well as being a fine guitarist and engaging raconteur, Dorado also plays violin. However, his son Amati almost outdoes his father as a virtuoso guitarist. The group is appearing in Jazzcup on 19 February and at the larger Bartof Station venue on 20 February. They are very popular, so get there early! (Tickets: JazzCup, DKK 120/ Bartof Station, DKK 150).

CLASSIC HAMMOND JAZZ The organ trio (Hammond B3, guitar, drums) has been a staple of jazz since the 1950s. One of the greatest Hammond exponents, Dr. Lonnie Smith, will be in residence at the Jazzhus Montmartre from 25-27 February. Smith has worked extensively with George Benson but here appears with Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar and Johnathan Blake (drums). Swinging funk-jazz at its best. (Tickets: DKK 350).

FREE JAZZ VETERANS For those with large ears and an adventurous nature, the international free jazz group, Globe Unity Orchestra, is a must-see. It all started in 1966, when pianist and leader Alexander von Schlippenbach was commissioned to write a piece for the Berliner Jazztage. That piece, entitled Globe Unity, 5

ON THE HOME FRONT... AS WELL AS PRESENTING INTERNATIONAL STARS, VINTERJAZZ IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT SHOWCASE FOR HOME-GROWN TALENT. BY STEPHEN GADD Kresten Osgood

Over the years, Denmark has produced a fair number of world-class musicians. There is something very satisfying in being “in at the start” when a new talent emerges, so here are a few suggestions for up-and-coming local musicians.

FOLKLORE AND HEATHEN RULES On the first day of the festival at JazzHouse, Danish-based Estonian saxophonist and composer, Maria Faust, will be presenting her Danish Music Award-winning project Sacrum Facere, a musical cycle inspired by Estonian folklore and heathen rituals arranged for an octet, mixing elements of improvisation and classical composition (Tickets: DKK 160). As part of the “Wild at Heart” programme, Maria 6

Faust can also be heard in Shitney, a trio formed to explore new and uncompromising music, mixing acoustic and electronic sounds - live at JazzHouse on 16 February. Beats, sampling and black and white visuals are all part of the mix. Shitney shares the bill with Eget Værelse, an all-female musicians collective. Their music is a synthesis of free jazz, noise rock, avant-garde, ethnic music forms and more, and the meditative/repetitive quality found in minimalist classical music (Tickets: DKK 60).

ruary. The music is a funky jazz fusion of harmonica, electric piano, guitar, bass and drums. (Tickets: DKK 185).

BIG BAND HEAVEN There’s almost nothing to beat the sound of a jazz big band in full cry. Anyone with a weakness for modern big band music should check out the Kathrine Windfeld Big Band (Taastrup Kulturcenter, 6 February). A talented pianist 15-piece orchestra comprised of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian musicians. The music is tuneful, swinging and firmly in the jazz tradition. (Tickets: DKK 90).

DENMARK GOES MAD FOR JAZZ IN FEBRUARY VINTERJAZZ 2016 IS NOT ONLY CONFINED TO COPENHAGEN AND ITS ENVIRONS. CONCERTS ARE TAKING PLACE AT VENUES ALL OVER DENMARK. BY STEPHEN GADD Kurt Rosenwinkel

Ibrahim Electric

Because the festival lasts for more than three weeks, several of the international big-name acts are on tour, for example the Jakob Bro trio, Tomasz Stanko Experience, Bixiga 70, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Fire!, Dorado and Amati Schmitt and gospel singer Lillian Boutté. Of the Danish acts touring, Ibrahim Electric, Sinne Eeg, Carsten Dahl, Søren Kjærgaard and the DR Big Band should be mentioned.

ODENSE Ibrahim Electric (5 February) Lillian Boutté (11 February), The Tomasz Stanko Experience (18 February) and Eliel Lazo & the Cuban Funk Machine (20 February) can all be caught at Dexter in Odense. (Tickets: DKK 140 for Ibrahim Electric/ 200 Boutté and Stanko/ 180 for Lazo). Moving on, the Studenterhus in Odense also has a fairly full programme, including the Kathrine Windfeld Big Band (5 February; tickets DKK 70) and Terkel Nørgaard Quartet (19 February; free admission).

FROM ESBJERG TO AARHUS Huset in Esbjerg is playing host to the Jakob Bro/Thomas Morgan/Joey Baron trio (6 February, tickets DKK 100) who then go on to play at Atlas in Aarhus (8 February; tickets DKK 150). 8

Ibrahim Electric also play Huset on (11 February; tickets DKK 100). Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, featuring the excellent American guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and the Norwegian big band conductor Geir Lysne, are playing three concerts during the festival. They are appearing at Atlas in Aarhus (9 February; tickets DKK 150), Slagelse Musikhus (10 February; tickets DKK 150), as well as Copenhagen JazzHouse (11 February; tickets DKK 160). For those interested in finding out what’s bubbling under on the Aarhus jazz scene, Atlas is hosting a “mini-festival” under the heading “The Golden Years of Aarhus” (5-6 February; tickets DKK 50). Also at Atlas, the hard-swinging, funky Brazilian big band Bixiga 70 will make you want to dance (18 February; tickets DKK 180). On 20 February, Swedish free jazz trio Fire! will blow you away with their fresh approach to jazz and electronics (Tickets: DKK 150). Fans of vocal jazz will not want to miss Danish singer Sinne Eeg. She has won many plaudits both in Denmark and abroad, including the French jazz critics’ prize for best international

vocal album in 2014. Her style is firmly rooted in the Nordic tradition, but also refers back to the great jazz singers of the past. (Atlas, 15 February; tickets DKK 220). Innovative Ukrainian minimalist pianist Lubomyr Melnyk is making his only Danish appearance at Radar in Aarhus (25 February; tickets DKK 120). While perhaps not strictly jazz, Melnyk is a very interesting piano stylist and innovator and should appeal to fans of e.g. Keith Jarrett or Carsten Dahl’s solo work. There is also a chance to hear the Carsten Dahl trio with Lennart Ginman (bass) and Frands Rifbjerg (drums). They will be playing the Aarhus Kunsthal (Tickets DKK 120).

FREDERICIA Det Bruunske Pakhus/Fredericia Jazzclub features Lillian Boutté and Burich-l’Etienne New Orleans Ensemble (10 February; tickets DKK 175). On 17 February, the Dorado and Amati Schmitt Quintet will take the stage (Tickets: DKK 125). Other concerts are also planned for the festival, so check out their programme.

DR Big Band

DR BIG BAND ON TOUR One of the most renowned jazz big bands in the world, the DR Big Band, is touring round Jutland playing highlights from their back catalogue but with a special focus on the music Ray Pitts arranged and composed when he was with the band. SPECIAL EVENTS AT VINTERJAZZ 2016 THIS YEAR’S PROGRAMME ALSO INCLUDES A RANGE OF ONE-OFFS AND SPECIAL EVENTS.

Vinterjazz 2016 is very much a national festival, with special concerts taking place right around Denmark.

SILVERWARE SØLVTØJET is one of Vinterjazz’s most ambitious projects this year. Led by drummer, composer and master improviser Kresten Osgood, SØLVTØJET and its motley crew of eight musicians and poets embark on a countrywide tour during Vinterjazz. Members include such luminaries as Lotte Anker, Jesper Thilo and Lars Skinnebach. There will be a total of five concerts throughout the country.

Date: Friday, 05/02 Time: 21:00 Venue: Jazzhouse, København K Tickets: DKK 160

SVEND ASMUSSEN TRIBUTE At The Royal Library and at Telefonfabrikken in Gladsaxe, Danish drummer Mads Tolling and his quartet celebrate jazz violinist par excellence, Svend Asmussen, whose 100th birthday coincides with the last day of Vinterjazz 2016, February 28th. Date: Sunday, 28/02 Time: 13:30 Venue: Telefonfabrikken - Gladsaxe Kulturhus, Gladsaxe Jazzklub, Søborg Tickets: DKK 80 / DKK 50 Press photo: Shitney by Peter Gannushkin

During the festival, Osgood will squeez seven creative friends into a minibus that during the five days will make the trip from Aarhus to Alberton – in the name of SILVER CLOTHES. The ensemble’s musical playroom is populated by some of the country’s most prominent figures both inside and outside the jazz industry. In addition to Kresten Osgood himself behind the drums, you will find familiar faces, including; pianist Jeppe Zeeberg, genre cruiser Jonas Struck on guitar and Nicolai Munch-Hansen on bass. The group also consists of saxophonist heavyweights Jesper Thilo and Lotte Anker, who together have a man-age experience in the respective swing and experimental jazz genres. SØLVTØJET will not be just pure music. Two poet’s border-degrading lyrics are a natural part of the ensamble. This is not unusual for Skinnebach, who previously has performed with, among others, the eccentric sage Goodiepal and saxophonist with avant-guitarist Jorgen Teller. The actual meeting between tradition and experiment, mainstream and playpen, and musicians from several branches and generations of the gaudy jazz is one of the key characteristics behind the partnership. The meeting hopes to reach a common denominator through the music that cuts across the many more or less artificial boundaries. The tour, during Vinterjazz 2016, has been developed in collaboration with Copenhagen Jazz Festival and a number of organisers and venues. The ensemble will be visiting the following venues during their journey across Denmark: Date: 17/02 Venue: Atlas; Aarhus Organizer: Sun Ship Date: 18/02 Venue: Pitstop; Kolding Organizer: Jazz6000 Date: 19/02 Venue: Stars; Taiping Organizer: Stars Date: 20/02 Venue: Jazz House; Copenhagen Organizer: Copenhagen Jazz Festival Date: 21/02 Venue: The combustion; Alberton Organizer: Combustion Costs: Members - DKK 80; Students – DKK 40; General - DKK 120

SAX – WILD AT HEART Internationally acclaimed composer and saxophonist Maria Faust is another touring force at Vinterjazz 2016. Under the banner Wild at Heart, her trio Shitney is joined by the hard-hitting experimentalists in Eget Værelse for a series of concerts all over the country. FEATURED ARTIST: DR LONNIE SMITH DR LONNIE SMITH IS UNDISPUTEDLY ONE OF THE TOP HAMMOND B3 MASTERS IN THE WORLD, AND THIS YEAR GRACES THE VINTERJAZZ STAGE.

12

- Dr Lonnie Smith -

BORN INTO MUSIC Born in Buffalo, New York, Lonnie was blessed with the gift of music. Through his mother, he was immersed in gospel, blues and jazz at an early age. In his teens, he sang in several vocal groups including his own–the Supremes–formed long before Motown’s eventual iconic act of the same name. Lonnie also played trumpet and

other instruments at school and was a featured soloist. In the 50s Lonnie was given the opportunity to learn how to play a Hammond organ. The Doctor’s first gigs were at Buffalo’s hottest jazz club, the Pine Grill, where he rapidly garnered the attention of folks like Jack McDuff, Lou Donaldson and George Benson. After appearing on several Benson albums, Lonnie went on to make his first recording as a leader - Finger Lickin’ Good - for Columbia Records in 1966. Dr. Smith has been amused to find himself sampled in rap, dance and house grooves while being credited as a forefather of acid jazz. When questioned about his consistent interest in music some consider outside the jazz “mainstream,” Lonnie shrugs. “Jazz is American Classical,” he proclaims.

Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, he has been featured on over seventy albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry, including the great George Benson. This unparalleled creative jazz organist and his superb trio, Jonathan Kreisberg (guitar), Johnathan Blake (drums) will undoubtedly blow minds when they visit Copenhagen for the first time.

I learned how to work the stops and that was it. It’s a passion for me, so everything else came naturally.

Eeg shows she’s steeped in tradition but pushing it in her own direction… with technique and sensitivity aplenty. - Fred Bouchard, Downbeat -

Sinne Eeg is a Danish jazz vocalist and composer. She was admitted at the Academy of Music in Esbjerg in 1997, from where she graduated in 2003. She is also the winner of “Jazz Vocal Album of the Year” in France. She is revered in the hottest parts of the world’s jazz scenes as a master of all the facets of vocal jazz. No matter what, she always manages to spellbind her audience with fascinating interpretations and self-written compositions. Lean back with a glass of red wine and enjoy some of today’s finest Danish jazz with Eeg at Vinterjazz 2016.

LEADING EUROPEAN JAZZ VOICE Eeg has established herself as one of the leading jazz singers in Europe, and has recently received the prestigious jazz prize Palmares from the French jazz critics for best international vocal album. She broke into the European Jazz scene in

Denmark in 2007 with the CD Waiting For Dawn for which she received a Danish Music Award (DMA) for Best Jazz Vocal Album, 2007. Since then she has received the DR P2 Jazz Prize in 2009 and another DMA in 2010 for the album Do not Be So Blue. In 2014 she received in Denmark Ben Webster Prize and later a Danish Music Award for the album Face the Music (Stunt, April 2014). Her style is modern and Scandinavian in tone, but with clear references to the “large” jazz singers in jazz and swing tradition. Eeg has just released the duo album Eeg / Fonnesbæk with bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk. Politiken’s Boris Rabinowitch gave her a rare six out of six of hearts in his review of the CD.

A Yamaha TransAcoustic piano is a regular acoustic piano with strings that have a few additional features beyond the ordinary. The instrument has the Yamaha Silent function that makes it possible to practise while wearing headphones so that the piano cannot be heard by others in the room. TransAcoustic technology allows the soundboard to act as a loudspeaker for all sound, both acoustic and digital. You can play using one of the digital instrument sounds and use the soundboard as a speaker, and you can also control the volume. You can also combine the acoustic piano sound with the sound of a digital instrument and create unique soundscapes, all rendered by a vibrating soundboard. You have to hear it to believe it.
