WISHING KING BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY THAI PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDING DENMARK, CELEBRATE THE 88TH BIRTHDAY OF THE FATHER OF THE NATION.

T

The Government of Thailand, and Thai people from all over the world will on December 5th join hands in celebration of the 88th birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX. Here in Denmark, led by the Thailand Embassy in Copenhagen, Thai expats living in Denmark will also commemorate this auspicious occasion. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also called Phumiphon Adunlayadet, or Rama IX was born in 1927 in the United States, and went on to become the ninth king of the Chakkri dynasty (1950 to present), which has ruled or reigned in Thailand from 1782, Thailand’s longest-serving monarch. Grandson to King Chulalongkorn, King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born while his father, Prince Mahidol of Songkhla, was studying at Harvard University. His older brother, Ananda Mahidol, became king in 1935, but on June 9, 1946, Ananda was found dead in his bed from a gunshot wound. Bhumibol immediately succeeded to the throne.

THE THAI MONARCHY The monarchy in Thailand is in many ways unique – not only does it have a history going back more than seven hundred years, but it has also managed to preserve its relevance in the today’s society. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy since the declaration of the Kingdom’s first constitution in 1932, the institution today continues to command deep, universal respect and serves as a guiding light and unifying force for the country, a focal point that brings together people from all backgrounds and shades of political thought, and gives them an intense awareness of being Thai. The Thai monarch reigns, but does not rule. He discharges his roles in accordance with the coun-

try’s constitution and remains above partisan politics, while continuing to contribute to the development and well-being of the Kingdom and its people. The love and reverence the Thai people have for their King stems in large part from the moral authority His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has earned during his reign, one that involves a remarkable degree of personal contact with the people.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS 88 is considered an especially auspicious number for the resemblance of number eight to the infinity symbol, thus, representing eternal gratitude that the Thai people, and people all over the world, have for His Majesty the King. Recognised as the “Father of the Thai Nation”, the King’s birthday is also observed as Thailand’s National Day and National Father’s Day. The country will mark this day with several celebrations, including a national “Bike for Dad” Event – a family cycle event celebrating the King as a symbol of unity and social harmony in Thailand. The close relationship between him and his subjects is seen as a reflection of the family tradition in Thai society.

Copenhagen celebrations Thailand invites Danish residents and their families to attend the candle-congratulatory on the occasion of the birthday anniversary of His Majesty’s 88th birthday. This family event, that will see both the people of Thailand and Danes light a candle for a victory, takes place on Saturday, 21 November, from

THAILAND SUPPLEMENT

THINK ASIA, INVEST THAILAND Thailand is a liberal market economy that welcomes and nurtures foreign business investment. Thailand’s ability to attract foreign investment has been a key driver of its economic success, contributing to the nation’s move from being an agrarianbased economy to one of the world’s 25 biggest economies, second in the ASEAN region. According to Economist 2015 Pocket World Figures, Thailand is the 33rd biggest economy, and 24th biggest by purchasing power. The figures also mark the country as being the 27th biggest exporter and 35th in terms of service output. Key industries contributing to the country’s high ranking are those of agriculture and manufacturing, which rank 12th and 16th respectively in terms of global output.

COMPETITIVE INVESTMENT ENVIRONMENT Foreign investments, especially those that contribute to the development of skills, technology and innovation, are actively promoted by the government. Thailand is consistently ranked among the most attractive investment lo-

cations in international surveys, and the World Bank’s 2014 Ease of Doing Business report places Thailand as the 18th easiest country in the world (and sixth in Asia) in which to do business. In terms of competitiveness, Thailand is ranked 31st among 144 economies by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the 2014-2015 edition of its Global Competitiveness Report. Thailand’s strength lies in its macroeconomic environment, with considerable improvement in many areas, for example, health and primary education and technological readiness. Thailand competes for investment by offering attractive tax and non-tax incentives, and by providing legal frameworks that facilitate investment and afford high levels of protection for investors. To strengthen the incentive programme, Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) also provides maximum incentives to priority activities that are considered important for the country’s development.

DANISH INVESTMENT IN THAILAND According to the BOI, Danish investment in Thailand by sector during the period 2010-2014, was DKK 7074.50 million. The following sectors rank highly in terms of Danish investment: ✓ Agricultural products/ food ✓ Minerals and ceramics ✓ Light industries/ textiles ✓ Metal products and machinery/ auto ✓ Electric and electronic products ✓ Services ✓ Chemicals and paper

One company who has seen over 30 years of success in Thailand is ISS. This Danish company established itself in Thailand in 1985, and currently has around 32 000 employees and an annual revenue of around 6.9 billion Baht. With hopes of becoming the world’s greatest service organisation, ISS has identified success in Thailand as being key to this.

ISS attributes the strong and vibrant organisational culture, a resilient Thai economy, well developed cities and infrastructure, the ability for companies to foster employee engagement through open communication, and the many possibilities for doing more business in the region as positive investment indicators.

ONE STOP CENTRE To cut red tape and facilitate businesses, the BOI established the One Stop Centre for Visas and Work Permits so that those documents can be issued quickly within three hours or less. In 2009, staff from several different agencies were put under one roof of the One Start One Stop (OSOS) investment centre to assist investors on an appointment basis with a wide range of issues including applications for corporate name registration, corporate tax ID numbers, VAT registration, foreign business licenses and investment promotion incentives, among others.

MOVING TOWARDS A STRONGER AND EFFECTIVE DEMOCRACY The current government, which came into office on 30 August 2014 is now focused on fulfilling the democratic aspirations of the people by promoting reconciliation and expediting reforms whilst ensuring broad based public participation. Reforms will be focused on establishing a fair election system, putting in place efficient mechanisms for prevention and suppression of corruption, eliminating economic and social inequality, improving the provision of public services and strengthening law enforcement. During this transitory period, a 250-member National Reform Council, comprising of a representative from each of Thailand’s 77 provinces as nominated by provincial selection committees, has been formed to work on reforms in the area of politics, national administration, laws and the justice system, local administration, ed-

ucation, the economy, energy, public health and the environment, mass media and social affairs, among others. To ensure that the voice of the people are heard, public forums will be held in various provinces to gather the people’s views on reform, and agencies have been asked to improve the mechanism by which the people can propose legislation through the Committee on Legal Reform. Internationally, the return of political stability in Thailand has been welcomed by the global community. Several countries have also expressed support and encouragement for the government’s measures for reform. During this important transition towards a stronger and effective democracy, Thailand hopes to continue to reach out, and pursue active and cordial relationships in all dimensions with the global community. DANISH TOURIST’S DELIGHT In January of this year, the company Jysk Travel Agency, which is the largest travel agency in Denmark, inquired about customer behaviour in the country. It revealed that the tourism and travel trends in 2015 placed Thailand as the destination of choice when it comes to the Danish traveller, followed by the United States, Australia and New Zealand, Peru, Indonesia, Canada, Argentina, Tanzania and South Africa respectively. Lars Møller Christensen, manager of Jysk Travel Agency, said that Thailand is appealing to the Danish market because of the reasonable costs of travel and the many beautiful destinations the country has to offer.

DISCOVER EVERY PART OF THAILAND Historical landmarks, lush rainforests or secluded beaches, whether you want to join a group or explore the country on your own, Thailand offers a great variety of attractions to choose between. Mountainous North With its majestic scenery, shifting landscape and high hills, the northern part of Thailand is a mecca for the adventurous. Local tribes in northern Thailand with their own culture, music, food and clothes are definitely worth a visit. Due to their sometimes remote location, bikes are a good way to go there. Many villages offer homestays for those who want to fall asleep to the sound of the jungle – a perfect way to get a unique insight to a completely different world. Central plains The central plains are the cultural heart of the country. Kanchanaburi with its famous River Kwai and historical monuments are one of the region’s must-sees. Southern islands Southern Thailand is probably best known for

its beautiful islands. Besides enjoying lazy days by the beach, these islands are ideal to explore on your own. Bicycle rentals are available across the region and there are many experienced tour operators if you prefer joining a group. Just a short boat ride from Phuket you will find Koh Yao Noi – a hidden pearl where it feels like time has stood still. The best way to explore this authentic island is taking it slowly on the bike – just like the locals do.
