We want opera lovers to indulge. We want to rouse the curiosity of the opera sceptics. We nourish diversity because we want opera to bloom and root anew. Welcome to more than 20 different performances, concerts and events in the beautiful Copenhagen Summer. – Festivaldirektør Michael Bojesen We’ve established a Festival centre in the heart of Copenhagen. Swing by the outdoor stage, which is located next to Torvehallerne, to enjoy the festive atmosphere as we present free performances and events each and every day of the Festival week. For instance, Malmö Opera presents a seductive Puccini performance; Skånske Operan gives us a taste of Rossini with The Barber of Seville; The Danish DJ Katrine Ring presents a very liberal interpretation of The Magic Flute on Friday night. The list goes on. You can listen to all of it for free, or you can buy yourself a seat. If you’re interested in getting to know an old Danish tradition, still going strong, you are most welcome to join us at our morning singing sessions - lead by Festival Director Michael Bojesen - from 1-4 August at 10:00am. There are also plenty of indoor performances and concerts. Just a stone’s throw away you’ll find the charming hall of The Worker’s Museum, where we are looking forward to the performance by The Royal Opera, and to a hilarious and wonderful evening of Opera Bingo. An exciting range of other venues in the inner city of Copenhagen host performances and concerts. Dig into the programme - there should be something for everyone. The Copenhagen Opera Festival 2013 invites you to feel the city burst with captivating drama and enchanting song. The Danes have a pronounced taste for singing. The seeds of this inclination were sown in the late 1700 when the German composer J.A.P. Schultz revivified Danish music life with his catchy and emotional melodies whilst living in Copenhagen. Peter’s Wedding deals with a rather heavy subject – the abolition of slavery – but the lightness of the opera seduced the Danish people and made it an immense succes. Charming and comic radio-opera from the 1930s. The Royal Opera has created the performance especially for The Copenhagen Opera Festival and The Workers’ Museum. The four soloist’s are some of Denmark’s leading singers. Enjoy this fable about unflagging moral concepts and malicious female intrigue. Staged in a world of Harlequin romance novels and ’Desperate Housewives’.

Enjoy this spectacular melange of beautiful opera arias and classic bingo. Winning gives you the privilege to choose a favorite aria, which is then immediately performed by Denmark’s leading tenor Peter Lodahl and Copenhagen Opera Festival’s Young Opera Talent 2013. The main prize is an ’aria to go’: Top off a wedding or a birthday etc. with a breathtaking performance.

The Danish composer Emil Reesen got a massive hit with this operetta about the brilliant Italian castrato Farinelli. We follow him around on an amazing journey from a nunnery over a pirate ship to a king’s castle. The story is told in a merry tone and through songs that have become great Danish classics. The operetta is presented in its entirety in Tivoli’s concert hall.

Tivoli’s music director Henrik Engelbrecht talks (in Danish) about tenors through the centuries. In between he will play sound and video clips with Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, Jussi Björling, Luciano Pavarotti and many others. From Caruso’s fusion of manly power and lyrical sweetnes, to Pavarotti’s brilliantly beautiful tone, these impressive voices sound again in Tivoli’s concert hall.

Welcome note from the Festival director Welcome to The Copenhagen Opera Festival 2013. It’s my first year as festival director, and I look forward to sharing this season with you, as I am glad to announce an ambitious and extensive programme. It demonstrates how opera is all about feelings; love, tears, shivers and joy. This years Festival will offer extraordinary opera experiences, as we want opera lovers to indulge and rouse the curiosity of the opera sceptics. We celebrate and nourish diversity because we want opera to bloom and root anew. Welcome to more than 20 different performances, concerts and events in the beautiful Copenhagen Summer. - Festival Director Michael Bojesen

Going from strength to strength The Copenhagen Opera Festival is a privately funded event, which in 2013 will take place from 28 July to 4 August, on a budget of five million DKK. Festival director Bojesen says that a lot of work has been put into raising this money, “We have been very privileged and have been met with great understanding from private donors. This year COF is in cooperation with Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci on the production of Peter’s Wedding, which has resulted in a lot of travelling between Denmark and Germany to organise the performance in Copenhagen. This requires much funding and several months of organisation”. He goes on to say that with over 40 concerts including international singers, the preparation and planning of the festival has been on-going for quite some time. The Festival is in its fifth year, and was started with a wish of bringing the opera out onto the streets and squares of Copenhagen. “The first year the festival had only three different performances, but it is now obvious that after just a few years, that Copenhagen has a need for a Festival like this. Last year there were tickets sold for almost 95% of all venues,” explains Bojesen. This year, for the first time, the Festival will have a big stage at Torvehallerne, which will see on offer eight different concerts for free. It is Bojesen’s hope that a lot of people will find their way to this stage and enjoy the magnificent music and the great artists. “The Festival has a goal of reaching out to the whole of Copenhagen - and it is my hope that a lot of people, whom have never thought that opera would appeal to them, will have some good experiences,” says Bojesen.

What to look forward to... The Festival centre that has been set up in the heart of Copenhagen, is equiped with an outdoor stage, located next to Torvehallerne. Patrons will be able to enjoy the festive atmosphere and watch free performances and events each and every day between 1st - 4th of August. For instance; Malmö Opera presents a seductive Puccini performance, Skånske Operan gives us a taste of Rossini with The Barber of Seville, The Danish DJ Katrine Ring presents a very liberal interpretation of The Magic Flute on Friday night. Singers’

Corner Festival director Michael Bojesen shares his passion for opera and explains why COF 2013 has some of the best singing talent that opera has to offer.

must-see performa nce Concerto Copenhagen

“Performed by the leading Scandinavian baroqueorchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, this is going to be a very special, high quality concert.” - Aci, Galeta and Polifemo

ne of the main commitments of COF 2013 is to present to the city of Copenhagen the best and most high quality of opera singers in Europe and Denmark. This year the Festival will present a special prize to ‘The young opera talent of the year’. “The singer will be afforded the opportunity to perform several times during the festival and awarded a prize of 50 000 DKK. This year the young soprano Frederikke Kampmann receives the prize,” explains Bojesen.

Soprano sensation The talented soprano Frederikke Kampmann (born 1985) has studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with teachers such as Margrethe Enevold, Ulrich Stærk, Friedrich Gürtler and Christen Stubbe-Teglbjærg. She begun her professional training as a singer in the Danish National Girls’ Choir, where she sung from 1998-2005. With the choir she performed all over the world - often as a soloist. Frederikke Kampmann had her debut in 2008 as Euridice in L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi. She currently studies with Sylvia Greenberg at the Conservatory in Vienna. During her studies in Vienna she has appeared as a soloist in productions such as Il Trittico and Cosi fan Tutte. In a Danish context, she has been heard as a soloist in Mozarts Requiem with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Carmina Burana in DR Koncerthuset (Danish National Radio Concert Hall). Bojesen says that he will definitely recommend her to all COF 2013 patrons.

Vocal veracity The human voice is the instrument that is closest to our souls, according to Bojesen who says that the combination of drama, emotions and singing really moves him when watching an operatic performance. “I think all people need to be moved this way, and I like the fact that the opera singers at COF 2013 are some of the most specialised in the industry – a speciality that requires so many years of training and hard work to reach levels that they are at. Amongst other noticeable singers is Peter Lodahl, a leading Danish tenor, and who can be heard at the Opera Bingo. “Henning von Schulmann is a young very talented baritone and can be heard in Dons and Divas in Pressen. The leading role in Puccinis Le Vili is sung by Sweden’s leading baritone, Karl-Magnus Frederiksson, and finally the cast of The old maid and the Thief which accounts for some of the leading Danish singers at the moment, amongst these Sine Bundgaard and Sofie Elkær Jensen,” says Bojesen.

Bojesen’s top picks Peter’s Wedding in Børssalen: “This opera was written in 1793 while the composer, J.A.P. Schults worked as Danish Court composer. The opera hasn’t been performed since then, and I am really looking forward to sharing this concert with the audience. There will be charming music sung in Danish by an international cast, accompanied by l’arte del Mondo, an outstanding leading German orchestra.” 6

Starlit revival of Danish music’s Grandfather

The Danes have a pronounced taste for singing. The seeds of this inclination were sown in the late 1700s when the German composer J.A.P. Schultz revivified Danish music life with his catchy and emotional melodies whilst living in Copenhagen. Peter’s Wedding deals with a rather heavy subject – the abolition of slavery – but the lightness of the opera seduced the Danish people and made it an immense succes.

The jewl of Danish opera 220 years after its first performance at Copenhagen’s Royal Theatre Peter’s Wedding returns to the city with an international cast of 16 singers and the German orchestra l’arte del mondo – a world class consort, under the direction of conductor Werner Ehrhardt. This ambitious project was enabled via collaboration with Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci and Bayer Kultur. The dialogue has been translated to Danish by Knud Romer, who will also narrate the performance. The opera is sung in Danish. Thanks to collaboration with The Danish Chamber of Commerce, Peter’s Wedding is performed in perfect settings in the beautiful hall of Copenhagen’s old Stock Exchange building. Peter’s Wedding is a sequel to the musical play, in one act, The Harvest Feast that J.A.P. Schulz composed the music to in 1790. This play expressed joy over the liberation of the peasants in 1989. The music was more akin to traditional folk music than to operatic arias, and many of the songs grew popular among the people. The Harvest Feast tells a love story about two young couples who wish to marry against the decision of their fathers. The young couple’s appeal to the sense of their parents and in the end they are allowed to marry the one they choose. One of the young men is called Peter and the play Peter’s Wedding tells the story of his wedding to Grethe.

Uniting Copenhagen with opera In the time when J.A.P. Schulz lived in Copenhagen, the hall of the Stock Exchange functioned as an equivalent of today’s shopping malls, where you could fill all your hearts’ desires with goods from overseas. Both ‘high’ and ‘low’ would move in the hall of the stock exchange to see and be seen. Just like the Stock Exchange used to mix people of every sort, Copenhagen Opera Festival wishes to unite people with the exquisit art of the opera. Peter’s Wedding is a piece of history that lives on and enriches the present.

Orchestra l’arte del mondo is from the season of 2010/11 the permanent main orchestra of the Bayer Culture.

Men behind the music The Cologne-born conductor (and artistic director) Werner Ehrhardt is a constant guest on international stages as a band-leader. Ehrhardt has led the world-renowned Chamber Orchestra Concerto Köln, with whom he developed a distinctive style of interpretation of historical performance practice and coined from 1985 to 2005. In 2004, he founded the ensemble l’arte del mondo, focusing on the more traditional orchestra. Since then he has performed with great success at numerous international opera, symphony and chamber orchestras, including; the Orchestra of the State Opera Stuttgart, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Berne Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève and Capriccio Basel. Daniel Engstfeld is the General Manager of the orchestra, he completed his artistic diploma at the Hochschule für Musik Köln, and has toured almost all of Europe, the United States and as well as the Middle East. He has been active in the field of artistic and cultural management for several years and worked for several artist agencies, as well as in the Orchestra Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Parallel to the outstanding artistic development of the Orchestra by Ehrhardt, the two men have seen l’arte del mondo become one of the top Orchestra’s in opera performance, and on the international music stage.

L’arte del mondo Orchestra l’arte del mondo, founded in 2004 by its artistic director Werner Ehrhardt, is one of the best orchestras in playing early music. The tradition within early music is often the starting point for the activities of the ensemble. The orchestra has participated in a number of wellknown festivals and has played a number of concerts, and has also in collaboration with the record company Capriccio, published a number of recordings of operas and oratorios.

Home invasion The Home Opera (HO) consort is visiting from Berlin, where they enjoy great success creating flamboyant opera events in private settings. The consort consists of young and ambitious singers from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Russia. Their engagement with Home Opera fulfills a vision, as they believe opera can be an intimate and intense experience, not tied to the concert halls. Hetna Regitze Bruun says that the concept of the Home Opera stems from the tuition programme in Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she studied as a singer.

Hetna Regitze Bruun

The opera of life Hetna is inspired by the feelings and emotions she gets with operatic performance. “It takes me on a journey of the feelings of life: Love, hate, anger, sorrows, loss and happiness, and off course all the great music,” she says. Hetna was fascinated with opera from a young age, a fascination that has grown into a career, “I have been interested in music, especially classical music and singing since I was a child, and took my first singing lesson in the first grade,” she explains. As for the Home Opera performances at the 2013 edition of COF, Hetna says that she sold both her concepts, Stand-up Opera (SUO) and Home Opera, to the Festival organisers. “After they heard Stand-up Opera live earlier this year in February, and received all the material about the Berlin based concept of Home Opera, they were keen to have us at COF 2013,” she says.

Dons and Divas The stand-up Opera is another highlight on the programme this year to wich Hetna says that she is most looking forward to performing. ”I look forward to both SUO and HO, and to be able to work and sing with my fantastically talented ensemble of singers and pianist who make great music together.”

SUO is based on opera classics served with a strong sense of humour by an ensemble cast. The ensemble know how to communicate the grand stories of dramatic music in a way that makes even the most persistent opera sceptic surrender. Be prepared for giggles in a hip and laid back comedy setting. The host of the evening is Danish writer and entertainer, Lotte Heise.

Baroque master Handel in sizzling Italian style

The happiness of a young courting couple is threatened by a jealous cyclop. Handel wrote this nerve-wrecking love drama during his stay in Italy. Performed by Concerto Copenhagen – also known as CoCo. The renowned and innovative baroque orchestra is conducted by Alfredo Bernardini, and the stage director of the performance is the highly acclaimed Deda Cristina Colonna. Cast: Hetna Regitze Bruun, Oleg Loza, Steffen Bruun and more.

Concerto Copenhagen Aka CoCo, is one of the world’s leading orchestras within their field: Early music played on historical instruments. CoCo plays at festivals and concerts all over the world and collaborates with international stars like Emma Kirkby, Anne Sofie von Otter and Andreas Scholl. Two of CoCo’s annual opera productions – Handel’s Julius Casar and Partenope – are out on DVD. CoCo’s recordings for Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, has received great attention and several prestigious, international awards. This has openened the doors to many of the leading concert halls in Europe, guest performances at internationally renowned festivals, and tours in Europe, USA, Japan and Australia. In Denmark the main collaborator is The Royal Theatre, where the ensemble takes part in one opera production per year. Since 1999, the world-renowned harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen is the leader of Concerto Copenhagen. The general manager of Concerto Copenhagen, Nikolaj de Fine Licht, who is administering this project, says that CoCo decided three years ago to start building up a tradition for baroque Summer opera in Copenhagen, in collaboration with Copenhagen Opera Festival. “We wanted to do opera by ourselves, governed by our own priorities. Most importantly not having too big a venue, thus allowing for more intimacy and preferably good acoustics – that’s one reason we are in Pakhus 11 this year,” he explains. Nikolaj says that CoCo enjoys challenging themselves with new genres, “Last year we did Dido and Aeneas with Andrew Lawrence-King leading in the Banqueting Hall of the Town Hall, that was beautiful and a huge success.” As part of their baroque Summer opera plans, in close cooperation with COF the production of Aci, Galatea e Polifemo is regarded by the Fesitval as one of the main events in their programme for 2013, that contributes financially and with the marketing. “We work closely together with COF organisers, illustrated by the fact that we share the same office facilities,” he says. CoCo has been doing opera for a long time with the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, but that’s an entirely different context where they are hired as an orchestra. Nikolaj says that other than the production of Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, he is most looking forward to Peter’s Wedding, but also to experience the way COF communicates in general, “I think the idea of bringing high quality classical art to the streets is brilliant!”

Italian drama and intrigue Aci, Galatea e Polifemo is actually named a Serenata in the score by Handel. He wrote this hour and a half ‘mini-opera’ in Naples in 1708 during his stay in Italy, a travel that lasted

about three years and inspired him deeply. The Italian sense of accompanied melody and the recitative, and sense of drama, combined with the ingenuity of the great Italian composers all marked him for the rest of his life. “The music is pure, vibrating Handel at his best. The story itself is very simple and is based on one of the metamorphosis of Ovid,” says Nikolaj The tradgedy is about Polifemo who loses all control because of jealousy. The lovely nymph Galatea sets the story off by telling the handsome young shepherd Aci, that she has received a sign telling that great misery awaits them. She tells him how the jealous cyclops has tried to win her heart, and that he doesn’t seem to shy away from anything in his pursuit. Aci worries, and Galatea hears Polifemo nearing. She suggests that Aci hides to avoid the anger of the giant. Polifemo arrives and threatens to take Galatea with him against her will. Aci calls on Polifemo to leave Galatea alone and instead take his anger out on him. Polifemo tries to take off with Galatea, but she suceeds in wrenching herself out of his grip, and escapes by jumping into the sea, where her father Nereo protects her. She hopes that sea monsters will kill her, but she survives and sings out her misery to Aci, who is left on the shore. The opera has a high profile crew for this production: Three international singer, including; ☛ Deborah York (soprano) for the part of Aci ☛ Sonia Prina (mezzosoprano) for the part of Galatea ☛ João Fernandes (bass/baryton) for the part of Polifemo The setting takes advantage of the raw industrial space of Pakhus 11 and will represent something which is close to a modern world and at the same time extreme and coloured as the Baroque. “The technical crew is of a very high standard, and among other members is made up of young Danish talents and two collaboration partners. The acoustics of the place are very good, giving the music the best support possible, contrary to traditional theatres that have a very dry acoustic,” says Nikolaj.

Deborah York as Aci Deborah York graduated from Manchester University and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Deborah is known as a specialist in baroque and classical music, and sings regularly with most of the distinguished ensembles and conductors in these fields worldwide. This season Deborah made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra and Claudio Abbado in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Berlin, and beside her big fame on the classical scene her extensive discography includes over 25 CDs and five DVD’s in concert and opera, live and in the studio.

Updating the opera Åsa Jensenhas, producer and manager of opera company Skånska Operan, that will play The Barber of Seville at the Festival, has been working with Skånska Operan for 16 years, “This was my first experience with opera, and it turned out to be love at first sight,” she explains. She goes on to say that her passion for opera is driven by making the genre more accessible and up-to-date for the modern audience. “I want to bring the opera arts into this century. I love the music and think that it is our job to make the plays work in the context that we live in today.” Most of the well-known operas performed at present were written and performed in another context and time, including that of The Barber of Seville. Through Skånske Operan, Åsa has seen this an an opertunity to re-invent the classics so to bring a new audience to operatic performances. It is this drive and passion for modernising the art, that has inspired Åsa to combine music with the theatrical aspect of opera to create a perfect match, and memorable performances.

Unique performance The performance of The Barber of Seville is unique, in that the Operan will be highlighting the comedic parts of the opera, to make it both entertaining and fun. “The settings to a theatre have much evolved since the 1940s, and I hope that because more can be done and experienced in the production, that the audience will laugh a lot,” says Åsa. In addition to her own production, she says that there are several productions the she is looking forward to on the programme, that look both fun and interesting. “I love when you do something different so I´m especially looking forward to Home Opera, Opera Bingo and Voices in the night,” she says.

Sofie Elkjær Jensen is a soprano, and had her debut in 2010 as Papagena in Mozart’s Magic Flute at the Royal Theatre, where she also sang Blanche in Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des Carmélites. Sofie Elkjær has distinguished herself with her flute and soprano duo InDuo – and not least at the Copenhagen Opera Festival In 2009, as Euridice in Monteverdi’s Orfeo in 2010 as Musetta in Puccini’s La Boheme, and in 2011 she was included in the Opera Concert on Vor Frue Plads, Stand-Up Opera and the Operetta Boat. In 2012 she was back aboard the Operetta Boat and also received the Sinning Scholarship. “I think I fell in love with opera, when I found out that you can combine singing and acting and making theatre in the same genre. When I was younger I wanted to be an actress, but I also loved to sing, so for me it was perfect to discover that you do both in opera. I have a tendency to love drama and in opera all the big emotions are involved,” explains Sofie.

The Old Maid and the thief.”

One-act opera In the end of the 1930s the Radioopera flourished with brilliant, short operas. Not least The The Old Maid and the thief which became very popular. The young Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menottis’ opera is a twisted fable about vague moral standards and mischievous feminine wiles. In this amusing opera the latent emotions of three women are stirred up when a wanderer with a hidden agenda passes by. The old maid Miss Todd lives in a small town with her housemaid Laetitia, who ends up a spinster. One day the wanderer Bob arrives, and the women, who are desperate for male

Her first real involvement with Opera came at the Opera Academy. “Being able to go to school where the soloist ensemble, choir, musicians, conductors, staff at the costume and make-up departments and so many other departments made me realise what a big and wonderful family opera is. I opened my eyes to see, that opera is so much more than ‘just singing’, and even though some productions can be very small, with few people taking care of many different tasks on the production side, I still get the same feeling as when singing. I’m very grateful and happy to have explored both sides to opera (production and performing),” she says. However it is on the stage that Sofie says she feel most happy, “I like the fact that opera tells a long story, and everyone involved in that story tells a part of it. It’s a feeling of not standing alone with something, even if you’re completely alone on stage, you’re not.” It is the versatility and adaptability that she enjoys about opera – that a performance can be presented within a context that suits that specific situation. In 2013 Sofie is performing at three COF operas’; signing the part of Preciosa in Reesen’s operetta Farinelli written by the wonderful Danish composer Emil Reesen, she is also singing an aria at La Grande Finale with colleagues and Malmø Philharmonics. Finally she is performing as Laetitia in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the thief, with the Royal Theatre at Arbejdermuseet. She says that The Old Maid and the thief is a wonderful and hilarious opera, and she strongly recommends everyone go and watch, and have a good laugh. Sofie describes the performance

company, invite him in and spoil him with attention. But Bob is not who he pretends to be and soon he is entangled in lies and dubious decisions involving the two women of the house and their neighbour Miss Pinkerton. The intrigues unfold during 14 scenes of this one-act opera. Aside from her own performances, Sofie says that she is also looking forward to the entire vibe of the Festival, “But it’s going to be absolutely amazing to perform Reesens music,” she admits. She says that she is going to have a blast on that evening, and show the audience what a pearl we have in the history of Danish operetta.

Venue fit for a banquet The opera will be performed in the banquet hall of the building that was used for gatherings in the Danish labour movement from 1879 onwards. In this atmosphere the workers were called to battle and to celebration. It is with great delight that Copenhagen Opera Festival takes over this beautiful place, that oozes from the belief, that only the best is good enough for the people. As The Old Maid and the thief was originally performed as a radio opera, it is seen as some what of an opera democratic revolution – opera for the people, and it suits the building completely. The labour movement was rapidly growing, people gained more rights – and cultural nourishment with works such as The Old Maid and the thief.

A colourful world of pranks and puppets Cast: Kaja Pihl and Niels Pihl

Youthful performances Kaja Pihl and Niels Pihl have been invited back to the Festival for the second time, after a previously popular performance. They both say that they are looking forward to performing again. The two professional performers specialise in small scale “closeup” opera for children (amongst other activities), and have done so for 36 years, in Denmark and internationally. “The Opera about Red Riding Hood is one of our most frequently performed productions - so if you want to introduce children (three to eight years) to opera as an art form, or if somebody would like to experience opera from a very different angle, this 40 minute performance provides a fun and entertaining introductory,” says Kaja. Educating and entertaining children in the art of operatic performance is what fuels the passion of Kaja and Niels, but they say that they like to see themselves as being professionals, and this translates to the work that they do and the performances they give. Constantly creating and producing new and exciting opera, Kaja says that she and Niels are always thinking of new ideas and performances to give. “At the time of the festival we are rather busy rehearsing a new production in our theatre,” she explains.

Kaja & Niels Pihl

The Pihl’s are not one for critiquing their own performances, and although they have received several stellar reviews in the Danish press, from performances at the Royal Opera, they play down their talent and impact of their opera. But they do suggest making your way with the entire family to the performance of The Opera about Red Riding Hood.

Darkchild Aside from the performance of The Opera about Red Riding Hood, another notable performance for the kids is the poetic thriller The Darkchild. The opera is about a family of two children; when the light child is tucked into her warm bed, the dark child has to stay outside in the cold. Her rage awakens the demons of the night; she wants to kill the light child. An actress, a singer, and a musician perform this stirring drama. A journey through both light and dark sides, for children as well as their parents.

The villies were dangerous spirits of nature, living in the woods and rivers. They were said to be dancing in the moonlight, and their overwhelming beauty could make men behave foolishly. Love and seduction Alike the beautiful young nymphs that lend this opera its title, Puccini masters the art of seduction; Le Villi captivated its audience from the first act. At the opening night in Milan in 1894, the finale was repeated several times before the crowds calmed. The material of the opera is quite enchanting; according to Slavic tradition, the villies were dangerous spirits of nature, living in the woods and rivers. They were said to be dancing in the moonlight, and their overwhelming beauty could make men behave foolishly. The opera is a guest performance by Malmø Opera from Sweden. In this rendition of Puccini’s Le Villi we encounter Anna and Roberto at their engagement celebration. Roberto leaves the feast for a short while, and is bewitched by another woman. He is seduced and forgets about Anna, who then dies of her heart ache. In such a situation, the villies’ task is to force the heartbreaker to dance till he dies.

Q&A’s with Henrik Marmén Malmö Opera is the providing orchestra and chorusto at the 2013 COF. In addition to directing in and producing the performance of Le Villi on the first of August, Henrik is also anticipating the final gala concert on fourth August which will feature the Malmö Opera Orchestra together with a number of great soloists.

Q

Tell me about your interest in opera, where does your passion in the culture of opera lie?

A: “For me, opera makes a special impact because it simultaneously uses music, drama and visual art to tell the story as expressively as possible and to really involve the audience. That’s why you can see a 200 year old opera without knowing much about the period in which it is set or written – the music tells you all you need to know!”

Q

How did you get involved in opera?

Orchestra director at the Malmö Opera, Henrik Marmén says that the performance of Le Villi is unique in that it is rarely performed on stage anymore. “Though it was his first opera, Puccini managed to put some incredibly fine music into it, which is why it was an immediate success at the premiere. It’s also perfect for a newcomer to opera, as it’s not too long (80 minutes) and there’s even a speaker narrating to the audience what happens onstage,” Henrik explains. The performance brings together three magnificent soloists – Maria Fontosh (soprano), Roy Cornelius Smith (tenor) and Karl-Magnus Fredriksson (baryton). Henrik says that the three will give a fantastic performance together with conductor Ralf Kircher and the
