an introduction This portfolio consists of some of many valued works within 7 years of pursuing architecture and practice beginning from the year 2009 to 2016. The selected works includes projects during undergrad, postgrad, competition and practice. I pursued studying abroad and graduated with Master of architecture in July, 2016 at Manchester Metropolitan University. Studying under the MSAp atelier led my research and attempts to connect architecture and the social in the most plausible way; by linking architecture and society. These projects I curated suggest the nature of architectural practice in the context of the ideology of sustainability and ‘the big society’ and the facts of increasingly urbanized and aged population; but also in terms of changes to the profession itself. Through a series of creative collaboration & social engagements, I personally have worked with people from different ages and background within the two major urban projects concerning the Manchester housing crisis and a response towards the refugee crisis. Whilst formerly attaining my Bachelor at UiTM in 2013; design projects were particularly different in each new semesters as it evolves progressively with different themes, scales, detail studies, designs and construction as shown in the portfolio. Endless process and progress are thought through the whole period of designing and critic sessions. It has been 7 great rewarding years of journey and preparation into the real world to become an Architect.

citizen expert. designer. storyteller “Architects design for various different reasons. Some want to make iconic buildings or statements expressing political stance, others experiment new technologies or complex structures; all those things are valid, however for me, architecture is fundamentally about people. I aspire to be an Architect of a citizen expert; to understand and identify people’s needs and the environment, a designer; to design opportunities and create impact and a storyteller; to share stories and to spread awareness through architecture”.

“escapism, solitude & temporality This introductory project addressed the oft-discussed relationship between film and architecture. As a design methodology, this study became particularly useful to the relationship between the two disciplines and arts can be expressed as one of space and of time. Based on the three films I selected (Her, Being John Malkovich and Where The Wild Things Are) directed by Jonze, he predominantly examines the idea of escapism. Escapism describes the state of having wandering and imaginative thoughts in order to escape from reality that enable one to avoid having to deal with reality as such in the state of solitude or temporality in phase.

Overall view of the environment

The design spaces are elevated above the ground in a looped circulation with primary(house) and a series of secondary(observatories) spaces. In a metaphoric circumstances within city blocks, the platform is designed as such to be in solitude while illustrating the idea of disconnecting with actual human interaction as this series of spaces exist in the real world but at the same time no instantaneous interaction setting the habitual boundary. The spaces created are transparent, blank and at a vista perpetually to escape into abyss of mind and soul.

Urban Asylum: housing for transdwellers

This project explores the idea and metaposition of transition which revolves in the context of post-capitalism whereby cities and dwellers are at constant change. The unprecedented migration crisis poses an interesting question to our cities. The New Urban Asylum project essentially explores the possibility of accommodating transdwellers(asylum seekers) in Manchester in developing a housing project. However, through this scenario, various consideration has to be taken in account. The main idea is to make possible the prossess of transition, reintegration and assimilation of transdwellers while acknowledging the available infrastructures to sustain their new life in a foreign place. In developing a holistic approach to this issue, the project cosiders four key aspect as such: 1) policy reintegration 2) transpersal 3) breaking the boundaries 4) economic interindependence

Using the same design methodology based from filmic architecture, one of the given tasked is to make a four interrelated short films with spatial and iconic content and expression. I turn into this to expressed the intention of the 6th year project into a hopeful interesting narrative of a journey depicting the issue, an awareness campaign, a trance story of a journey to a promising land and finally the “Transition” - setting out preliminary parameters, assumptions and questions of the project which I chose.

beyondborders project scenario Currently Europe is experiencing an unprecedented migrant crisis. However, it must be acknowledged that there have been a number of similar migration processes in the past century and that there probably will be new migration waves due to new conflicts, economic issues, climate change and the fact that global population is predicted to reach 11b by 2100. Considering the aforementioned factors, it can be suggested that in the near future migration will turn from a rather dirty word, a crisis condition to a standard form of operation. This poses very interesting questions to our cities and to us as architects. How do we manage that migration? Will cities be less and less static and architects will need to respond to the new transitory nature of cities. Can capitalism can be better than it is? Now, architects create spaces for economic actors like rich people and bankers. How can architecture be formed for different actors and the key thing in which we assume that they have a legitimate economy in which they exist.

theoretical framework

For over twenty-five years, Manchester has promoted and invested in equality through innovative work with minority communities. Manchester is also one of the most diverse cities in the country and have a national reputation for its equality and diversity of people from different background as this suggest a positive change and chance for Syrian/refugees becoming more socially inclusive and acceptable. As part of attempting to dissolve some of the boundaries between [TRANS]dwellers and the local community, this project explores an urban master plan retrofitting existing infrastructure through relocation of functions, development of new public spaces, new housing scheme and creating street connections producing an adaptive yet culturally specific new small district for a pre-mixed community within an existing community: a city within a city.

cheetham hill Cheetham Hill, Manchester, as a ward, has a population standing at 22,562 according to the 2011 census whereby it is one of the culturally diverse district in Manchester whereby nearly half, an incredible 48 per cent, of all residents in the district, which has historically been home to migrants across the globe. English was not their main language. Home to Polish delis, Irish pubs, Arab sweet shops, Pakistani markets, Jamaican hairdressers - and much more besides with the colourful shop fronts and aromas from the many cafes, restaurants and delis in the area, it’s a place where our senses can really come alive.

project aim

masterplanning Dissolving existing boundaries: The key masterplanning idea aims to break the boundary between the transdwellers and the local people to help assimilate transdwellers into the local community better. The masterplanning approach are taken in consideration based on existing site condition and previous site analysis while acknowledging the available infrastructure. Key masterplan interventions are: (a) relocation of function (b) new public connection/social space (c) continuous economic relationship (d) housing scheme Illustration from preliminary site study

ACADEMIC WORKS

masterplanning Through the change and relocation of function the continuous relationship between the sites can be achieved along with the open square in front of the mosque and rearrangement of retail shops at adjacent will create a more interesting pedestrian/human experience through space with a continuous human activity along the path. By disrupting the existing boundary allows the environment to breathe and becoming less rigid while creating an interlocking urban pattern through these spaces.

The illustration on the left describes the possibility in change of function and the refurbishment of Cheetham Hill Library. The idea is to regenerate the abandoned building fitting by relocation of function from site into the building while reactivating its original function as the library. The mixed use of function will allow it to be used back by the local community and the new transdwellers.

The images above are case studies developed in places or historical landmarks in relation with religious building. It can be seen at these significant infrastructures typically are connected to a square or a souk/bazaar/market; places of worship are easily connected whereby social and economic activity occurs. A similar approach is developed to create a similar environment that changes the rigid structure/ boundary along Cheetham Hill road. With the intention to break the existing boundary, helps to improve the physical environment which could create an open space for common use, social interaction, recreational space, improving pedestrian experience as well as new informal economic activity in Cheetham Hill. The drawings on the right also illustrates the possibilities of new economic activity that can be arranged and take place around the square by the locals or holding a larger events benefitting themselves and the transdwellers. The typologies are design in grids in multiple of 3000mm to have a controlled dimension of spaces to maximize the number of dwellings and to design units affordably to the number of residents per unit. Based on the condition and number of people per family member, the housing expansion typology is considered as family members may arrive at different times from Syria. The idea of expansion enables the family to add a new floor or extension when needed.

thermal control and comfort

Mineral wool insulation

Thermal control and comfort are achieved by ensuring insulated materials are placed in perimeter of building to ensure reduce heat flow out of the building. The insulation material is placed in perimeter of the building envelope and openings where typically heat loss occur. The design thermal comfort is also achieved through continuous ventilation and daylight/ double glazing materials at all windows. Air tightness is also controlled through vapour control layer membranes.

manchester housing crisis

Cover image of the booklet

https://issuu.com/stefanwhite/docs/manchester_compendium_of_spatial_da

The report’s objective is to attempt to expand the definition of the Housing Crisis, by quantifying the problem on a much smaller scale than it is normally characterized but with a wider scope of what is relevant to its study. Rather than taking a national scale perspective, our stance is to take Manchester as a case study, in order to do in-depth analysis on neighbourhoods, communities, streets. Critically, we hope that this level of detailed analysis will result in a recognition of the need to engage in specific responses to individual problems, rather than blanket solutions.

Glance of the report

We also looked at a number of texts that focus on a variety of issues and suggest different ideas and philosophical views. such as MSAP Discussion Paper Translation from Drawing to Building By Robin Evans, Creating Capabilities By Martha Nussbaum, Doing Disability Differently By Jos Boys and All This is Solid By Danny Dorling. We are producing this report to understand the issues working with partners in Manchester’s regeneration teams and housing providers such as City South Manchester Housing Trust, Southway Housing Trust, Northwards Housing and Manchester City Council.

Our presentation to the Manchester City Council and other Manchester’s Regeneration Team

housing rearrangement & reclaimation of public space In the current situation where there are issues such as shortage of housing, demolition of houses to built new ones and increase of new housing price, the project aims to re-use the existing stock to diversify and reorganize to create a longevity of the existing housing for now and future purposes. As previously described, the design strategy input undertakes to address an issue of a failure in a neighbourhood by making minimal changes and reorientate the existing housing layout and reclaiming a public green space for the benefit of the neighbourhood. With the new layout and public park, the design also aims to encourage people to take pride in their area, keeping areas nice, generate a sense of place and well presented as a way of preventing crime and preventing the area from being targeted. This will hopefully increase the social sustainability of the housing area with the new active housing layout arrangements. Initial illustration of the public park regenaration

Issue & Place

People

Addressing the failure of existing neighbourhood whereby the housing estate at Moston Vale, North Manchester is currently experiencing current issue of crime and anti-social behaviour. The project takes in consideration of improving the physical environment of the housing estate while discussing the issue of natural surveillance, permeability, legibility and zoning of the area.

Based on the detail study from studio 4.2, demographically, in majority people in living in Moston Vale are families with dependent children and people of age 65+. Evidently in the current situation in Moston Vale, in an area that population growth is increasing as there is high percentage of families with dependent children and dealing issue with crime and anti-social behaviour, rather than just economic investment, input in social investment into social housing and the social sustainability of the area could be done.

active fronts// private rears

The idea was to orientate the house with active ‘fronts’ to streets or main human activity and public spaces and inactive ‘backs’ to private the spaces. Thus activity will be more concentrated at fronts/streets and security is maintained at back spaces. Re-orientating the house would resulted in changes to internal layout. The strategy considers a minimal change to the internal layout while also necessary changes to the front facade of the house.

What makes a housing sustainable ? Moston, North Manchester

Lewis(2005) discusses that sustainability is more than houses with solar panels on the roof and maybe wind turbine in a garden. She describes that it is more about combining the poetic and material, the qualitative and the quantitative, the imaginative and the functional to create a quality environment for us now and the future and perhaps strands from four major elements such as design(aesthetics, architecture, a sense of place), environmental concerns, economic and consideration for the individual and society.

Site location in Moston

By identifying the hierarchy of activity and reorientating the active fronts of the house this would create a better surveillance and movement of people. This would make a clear delineation of zones of public , semi private and private zones.

ipoh convention centre

A task was given to design a convention centre. The project duration requires almost 3 months of designing. The project compromises of precedent case studies, long span structure study, site analysis, model making, schematic services, a design report and a final presentation board of the design. The site chosen was at Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin shah in Ipoh, Perak. amazingly the site is backdrop with a beautiful scenery of lushes green of mountain range. A design was to be proposed based on the client chosen and directly or indirectly portray their identity and portraying Ipoh itself. A detail study was done based on the site analysis and case studies to come out with a design. A timeless design approach was eventually produced based on the idea of translating humble, reflections of nature and the element of verticality and horizontality of mountains. Many design process was taken in consideration and a final design was produced.

A modern town of many characteristics, Ipoh is also known for its rich history as a mining town. It is a fast developing city of high potential in economy. Beautiful backdrop of hilly tops, peaceful environment and panoramic views allows new exploration for a designer to design. In reflection towards Ipoh. A task is given to design a convention centre to fit locally and internationally. The convention centre is will complete with exhibition halls, auditorium, meeting rooms and cafeteria. The design has to respond with the local and site context. The design must also represents its client.

design intention The main idea is to reflect the serenity of Ipoh, an iconic image of Ipoh whereby it is landscape with beautiful terrain and lakes from mining waste land. Imaging the atmosphere that is Ipoh is translated into the design by emphasizing the horizontality and verticality of terrain. Water element also plays an important role, it projects a reflection or humbleness which in away respecting the nature and surrounding while adding cooling effect to the building.

The continuous linkage is seen in the continued pathway of the building to the site boundary connecting to the existing pedestrian walkway. The design also incorporates a centralized community living whereby the facilities is concentrated in the middle as a transition space of interaction among the residents. Besides that, the building treatment is subtle and humble which respects and blends in with the surrounding to complement the concept design of linkativity of building and the environment.

design approach The site planning is divided clearly of zones. It is vertically raised in increasing hierarchy and a centralized green area with community facilities is created. Being able to view at central green brings up the sense of surveillance for the community and use as a transition space of communication. An axis line is created as a continuous linkage of building Towards the outside. Planning of the parking is located along the site and under the building on ground floor. Input on green passive design is clearly seen of stack effect which happens between the apartment blocks. Besides that, the building is orientated facing north-south to prevent from direct sun light. The site planning represents the horizontal and vertical linkage of the surrounding into the site.

ACADEMIC WORKS

First Floor and Typical Floor Plans

Blow up floor units

typologies & spatial functions The housing scheme is developed with 3 different typologies Type A being the intermediate units, Type B on corner lots, Type C with walk up units and accommodating units for the disabled residents on first floor level which are nearby to retail units. The typologies are typically house for 3-5 members of people. On the ground floor the housing scheme includes facilities such as musola, nursery for children, community hall, office from administration and green areas for multipurpose activities. construction and environmental strategies The building construction applies the industrialized building system (IBS) whereby it is a method of construction process utilizes techniques, products and components which involves prefabricated components or on-site installation. It includes the process which components of building are conceived, planning, fabricated, transported and erected on site. Whereas green strategies are focused mainly on passive designs such as orientation of building, sun shading louvers and raised courtyards creating stack effects for better building and unit ventilations.

ACADEMIC WORKS

06 “the symbiosis of man, religion and nature The design intention is to create the right environment tahfiz students in an urban context by creating a different kind of atmosphere. Basically the idea is to achieve seclusion having tranquility and living in serenity of belonging. The strategy is to break the boundaries between the inside-out by interplay of nature and landscape. Having a sense of discovery, boundaries of tahfiz and hafizah, linkages of courtyards, implementing technology and using bear materials completes the honesty and humble of design.

N Enlarged ground floor plan

The design thus brings awareness and educates the students and community on design and living in sustainability which then explain the concept which in cooperates three elements of man, al-quran and nature interrelating between the elements functioning as one.

Furniture display in campus

Multiple seating positions

furniture designs 07 furniture designs After working through our design and manufacturing process, we noticed parallels with the WikiHouse concept of open source design intended for global mass production. We created a set of drawings and kit of parts in the style of a WikiHouse project in the hopes that our design could potentially exist within their catalogue.

Components of the furniture

We then focused on creating a multi-functional unit and started experimenting with different shapes. The most efficient way of rotating the movable unit around a central pivot is by using a semi circle shaped disk. It can be adjusted to a number of different angles for a back seat or a table as chosen by the user.

Section and elevation drawings

For the prototype we decided to try a number of different materials such as plywood and perspex. For the Final product we used plywood as it can placed for both outdoor and indoor uses when treated. The design however can be manufactured using other materials as well depending on the location. Our final design managed to meet the criteria we set ourselves in initial design discussions in terms of function whilst also developing aesthetically into a product we thought looked visually appealing in the environments we had considered. Located in the north of Kuala Lumpur City Centre bounded by Jalan Raja MudaMusa in the North East, Jalan Hassan Salleh in the South West. A town is a dissipative system that needs to exchange with the outside natural world to get a level of dynamic balance. To become self sufficient entity, where there is waste is absorbed and the energy and materials are constantly produced and renewed, a continuous exchange with the system of nature must be included in the planning. Thus the idea of Breathing Green which is a symbiosis of building design and the surrounding is introduced.
