01SURAT UPCYCLING MARKET

Upcycling market as part of a masterplan

01 SURAT UPCYCLING MARKET Location: Chowk, Surat, Gujarat Gross building floor area: 3500m2

This thesis focused on environmental and social design culminating into an initial research-driven masterplan along the Tapi river consisting of landscaping elements, educational and recreational areas, and also artificially created paddy fields. The masterplan was developed as a prototype for a riverside urban regeneration programme to combat issues like waste and flooding.

The masterplan also includes a low-tech open building for upcycling where the waste is crafted and converted into something else and resold at the existing flea market. This social enterprise type of system being economically viable can put other environmental issues under control including trash, sewer, and pollution. The concept retains cultural life and spirit of the Surti workers by becoming a publicly visible activity which adds to the dynamism Surat’s activities.

M

ASTERPLANNING

This design incorporates a number of recreational and leisure activities. The integration of these activities allows different functions to work side by side. The majority are proposed to be outdoor for better exposure to the environment when experiencing the leisurely strolls or the short breaks between jogs. As Walt Whitman said:

“Now I see the secret of making the best person: it is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth, Nature and the environment has many health benefits and exposure can also help improve mental well-being. An increased number of activities will also mean more maintenance and through this, the scheme can bring people to site by providing work, a healthy environment and waterfront view.

Pollution chimney - that help to ventilate the polluted air as well as collect rainwater

Local wildlife feature - recreational activities and otter habitats Man-made paddy fields on raised topography - absorb water as a resilience strategy to help dissipate potential floods Place for festivities with access to the river - access point for the immersion of Lord Ganesh, or for spiritual bathers Line of trees - resilience strategy and separation of spaces Water market - amphibious landscape (LTL) - floating markets using empty plastic bottles as floats Earth mounds - resilience strategy and flood water dissipation. Can be constructed using rubble and waste material Garden - spaces plotted throughout length of masterplan as retreat spaces along the riverside walk. Also consist of protected flora under PTFE roof for display. Further include: Persian gardens, brooks, fountains, flowerbeds, ponds, pools and pavilions Net to trap plastic from river - attached to floating markets for river clean up Bubbles to separate plastic from river - Dutch innovation that can make plastic collection more convenient, attached under the nets Reedbeds - foliage and flora along the banks of the river to further provide resilience Shops and provisions - local trade and businesses Upcycling - centre providing crafts and upcycling space which feeds in to the market School - educational facility that promotes health + well-being and care for the environment Market - main weekly flea market

Trash trade-in - collection to waste gathered from around the city Recreational activities: - U-turn initiative -Maze -Cafe -Fishing -Gatherings
