Celebrate Labor Day The Illinois Labor History Society is hosting two special events this Labor Day weekend. Tour Forest Home Cemetery, Saturday, Sept. 5 The ILHS, in partnership with the Forest Park Historical Society, will host its first-ever monthly tour of Forest Home Cemetery at 863 S. Des Plaines Ave., Forest Park. Visit the memorial to the Haymarket martyrs, the resting place of Emma Goldman, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and more. 11 a.m. - Tour Forest Home Cemetery Tour led by Mark Rogovin, author of The Day Will Come, the comprehensive tour book for the cemetery. A map of the cemetery and directions are available online. Suggested donations $10, senior citizens, $5. Labor Day at Pullman National Monument, Monday, Sept. 7 The Illinois Labor History Society is hosting a Labor Day Celebration at Pullman National Monument at the North Factory building, 11057 South Cottage Grove Ave. 12:30 p.m. - Tour of Pullman National Monument Ride a trolley car and learn about the workers of Pullman and the history of the town, including the factory, the Florence Hotel, the company housing and the National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum. See the new, striking life-sized mural of A. Philip Randolph flanked by Pullman porters and firemen. Space on the trolley is limited, and first-come, first-served. 1:30 p.m. - Music and Program Historic figures from labor history will come to life in a short skit about the new Pullman National Park, with music and greetings from the ILHS, the Chicago Federation of Labor and more. New Member Orientation, Monday, Sept. 21, 5:30 p.m. New members represent the future for SAG-AFTRA. The more knowledgeable they are, the stronger our union and all members are. The goal of the New Members Subcommittee of SAG-AFTRA Chicago's Community Outreach, Community Organizing committee is to educate, engage and empower professional actors from the moment they become union members. The new member orientation event is only one part of that process. Topics covered include every step involved in the union experience, from initiation fees and the dues structure to the correct way to execute member reports and contracts. Other areas include agents and commissions, casting directors, resolving claims, health coverage, set demeanor, committees, staff and a variety of member benefits. New member orientations are not just for new members. Whether you joined yesterday or 20 years ago, all members in good standing are welcome. Plan now to attend the next new membership orientation and stay informed. SAG-AFTRA Conservatory Presents Budgets and Financial Planning When was the last time you reviewed your budget? Do you even have a budget? Who's going to manage your savings and retirement accounts? Do you even have any savings or retirement accounts? How far out does your financial plan reach? Do you even have a financial plan? Sandra Karas, a SAG-AFTRA New York Board member, secretary-treasurer of AEA and director of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will present a primer for those in the performing arts industry. Come to a free seminar and take the fear out of money matters. Learn how to become the master of your own financial destiny and take control of your fiscal life. You'll learn how managing your money can free your creative nature and enable greater success in your artistic career. KMRC Offers Audio and Video Equipment Training Every Wednesday 5 - 9 p.m. You've probably heard that the KMRC has some great audio and video equipment. Do you want to learn to use it? Audio and video equipment training is offered at no charge every Wednesday evening, 5 - 9 p.m. You can learn the basics of using Audacity, Sound Forge and basic recording techniques. Or, if video is your thing, you can learn how to record and audition, and email it out. Training is offered every Wednesday. Performer Tidbit Moving? Log on it SAGAFTRA.org, click on Membership then Membership Services. Using the forms available in the Document Library, you can update your Membership Records with your new, correct address. You must be logged in as a member to access this page so click on User Login, located on the upper right hand corner of the home page. While you're there, double check the other information: phone, email, etc. If your membership records are not up to date, delivery of all checks and notifications mailed from SAG-AFTRA can be delayed. Holiday Schedule for Office and KMRC SAG-AFTRA Chicago Local and KMRC will close at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, and be closed all day Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.
