We drive along a rugged track to the roots of Mt. Hvannfell. After 30 minutes walk across a lava field, we reach the Lofthellir lava cave. At least one hour is spent inside the cave, observing this unbelievable natural phenomenon.

In all our Lake M it the notorious advent we take our time to vis Yule Lads in Dimmuborgir The Yule Lads are the 13 sons of Grýla and Leppalúði, vicious trolls that live near Lake Mývatn. As the Lads grew up they wanted a place of their own and Dimmuborgir was the perfect place for the brothers to settle down. An old tradition in Iceland is that 13 days prior to Christmas the Yule Lads start coming down from the mountains, one on each night. Children in Iceland place their best shoe on their windowsill before going to bed. Each night a little gift is left in the shoe from the Yule Lad that came down from the mountain that night. If the child has been misbehaving, there might be a raw potato left instead.

December 12th The first one is Stekkjastaur/Sheep-Cote Clod, a very stiff fellow who tries to suck the milk from the farmers ewes. December 13th The second is Giljagaur/Gully Gawk, he sneaks into the cowshed and waits for the opportunity to steal milk. December 14th Third is Stúfur/Stubby, who as his name implies is on the small side. December 15th Fourth is Þvörusleikir/Spoon Licker, who loves to steal the wooden stirring spoon from kitchen. December 16th Fifth is Pottaskefill/Pot Scraper, he tries to snatch pots that haven’t been washed and loves to lick the scraps from them. December 17th Sixth is Askasleikir/Bowl Licker, hiding under beds and if someone leaves his wooden food-bowl he grabs it and licks it clean. December 18th Seventh is Hurðaskellir/Door Slammer, an awfully noisy fellow slamming doors and keeping people awake. December 19th Eighth is Skyrgámur/Skyr Gobbler, his favourite food is Skyr (milk curd) so he sneaks into the pantry and gobbles up all the Skyr. December 20th Ninth is Bjúgnakrækir / Sausage Swiper, he loves sausages of all kinds and steals them whenever he can. December 21st Tenth is Gluggagægir/Window Peeper. Not as greedy as his brothers, but very curious and therefore peeping through windows. December 22nd Eleventh is Gáttaþefur/Door Sniffer, with a big nose. He loves the smell of cakes and often snatches a cake or two. December 23rd On St. Þorlák´s day the twelfth Ketkrókur/Meet Hook arrives. He adores lamb meat and as it is a tradition to cook smoked lamb on this day he might try to steal a leg. December 24th The thirteenth is Kertasníkir/Candle Beggar. He loves candles of all colours and might grab one from you.
